10 Alternatives To Mininova

Written by TorrentWatcher on November 26, 2009

After nearly five years of loyal service, Mininova disabled access to over a million torrent files when it partly shut down its website. Starting today, only approved publishers are able to upload files to the site, but luckily there are plenty of alternatives and potential replacements BitTorrent users can flock to.

With an impressive 175,820,430 visits and close to a billion page views in the last 30 days, Mininova set a record that they will be unable to break in the near future. Last August a Dutch court ruled that Mininova had to remove all links to ‘infringing’ torrent files, with disastrous consequences.

Since it is technically unfeasible to pre-approve or filter every potentially infringing torrent file, the Mininova team decided to throw in the towel and only allow torrents to be submitted by approved uploaders. This move resulted in the deletion of more than a million torrents, many of which were not infringing any copyrights at all.

Thankfully, there are still plenty of alternatives for those BitTorrent users who are looking for the latest Ubuntu, OpenSUSE or Fedora release.

Below we provide a random list of public torrent sites that are still open, but there are of course hundreds more sites we could have included. If your personal favorite is missing, feel free to post it in the comments below – preferably with your reasons why it should be included in any upcoming lists.

If you’re looking for high speed downloads, you might also want to check out Usenet.

1. Torrentzap

2. Vertor

3. ExtraTorrent

4. KickassTorrents

5. BTjunkie

5. Monova

7. isoHunt

8. yourBitTorrent

9. The Pirate Bay

Update: The owner of Monova, told TorrentFreak that he has reserved all Mininova usernames for people who want to make the switch to his site. The account names can be claimed here. Also, we replaced some sites in the original top 10 because they went down or started to serve trojans,or viruses.

Not as good for browsing aimlessly as other sites like TPB or Mininova though.

So…. Shall I start digging the grave? Maybe buy a graveyard.

Mininovas has died.

The Pirate Bay is not more than barely alive.

And so we’ll continue to keep torrenting, until the very end. But… I just wonder what would happen if every single person that has downlaoded/downloads stuff (per say, “pirated” or “pirates”), would stop using/buying crap from anyone (exept free, of course).

28 Nov 27, 2009 at 01:48 by Kapcha

@26
The Pirate Bay had not died!

29 Nov 27, 2009 at 01:51 by Ninja

TPB is not dead… Just downloaded a book I couldn’t find anywhere from TPB using the magnet link with openbt and publicbt. I’m beginning to believe they are some sort of ‘cursed’ black pearl crew that won’t die even if MAFIAA stabs them several times lmao. Long live TPB! [sarcasm] Don’t sue me for mentioning copyrighted material please T_T [/sarcasm]

Btw TF, an article about open trackers (with a listing like this one) would be awesome. I mean, publicbt is awesome and yet it has much less access than openbt, maybe due to low ‘publicity’ on specialized sites like TF.

30 Nov 27, 2009 at 02:00 by kickasstorrents

For the ones looking for the torrents deleted from mininova: we have almost all of them with torrent file cached at torrage and magnet links just in case :)

All the major upload accounts from mininova 1337x noir eztv fxg fxm etc. are also upload on monova.org. You can even list them by they username 1337x:

etc.

37 Nov 27, 2009 at 02:42 by Prax07

Mininova was really the only site I ever used, except for extv. Now Monova looks really promising.

Sad that mininova had to go, but like everyone is saying, there are loads of replacement sites out there, so it’s bad, but not catastrophic.

Ah well. Another site with no backbone bites the dust.

42 Nov 27, 2009 at 03:04 by Seshan

To every idiot that says TPB is dead, you are wrong, They are alive and well, yes they closed their tracker (big mistake for them to announce that, if they didn’t announce it most people would of never of known!) but they don’t need the tracker and neither do you.

43 Nov 27, 2009 at 03:14 by Borderliner

“Btw TF, an article about open trackers (with a listing like this one) would be awesome. I mean, publicbt is awesome and yet it has much less access than openbt, maybe due to low ‘publicity’ on specialized sites like TF.”

Not really. OpenBT was first, PublicBT came later (not much, but still later). Also all(?) TPB (and Mininova?) .torrents had OpenBT linked into them, while PublicBT still has to be included by hand.

Yes, as a member of immortalseed, I agree that it rocks.

It is NOT, however, “all you need.”

My experience with private trackers is that they are great for TV shows, and recent movie releases.

They fall flat on their face when trying to find older (even by just a few years) movies.

51 Nov 27, 2009 at 03:46 by p2pfreakkk

This is going to be pretty hard after all these years of getting used to a service so well done…

Where do I now go to check the uploader specific torrents which was one of the best and trusted feature in mininova ?

Just by bookmarking the uploaders ( secretmyth, saimey, jonny, eztv, fxg, xRG ) that I trust,I was able to keep myself updated on the latest releases WITHOUT ever wondering if they are genuine or not..NOW There is no other such alternatives other than TPB ( which might also get shutdown like this anytime )..

Most of the sites listed above in the article does not have a Uploader section and hence are full of FAKES !!!

No matter how much we will love or hate mininova..it will surely be missed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

52 Nov 27, 2009 at 03:47 by Sad

There is no alternative to what Mininova gave us but we gotta move on with what we have, think of the time took for Mininova partial shutdown in no time what would happen to other torrent site that are left ???

53 Nov 27, 2009 at 03:56 by Dissenter

Thanks to mininova and TPB troubles, I have since discovered private torrent sites, where I can download nearly twice as fast and my upload isn’t going to waste on leechers. As a matter of fact I’m seeding now more than ever before. Share the world, screw the industries!

54 Nov 27, 2009 at 03:59 by noobs

when will you children get with the program, a few private trackers are all you need.

@51 Not everyone likes private trackers.

Most of the private trackers I’ve been on don’t have the huge community to actually seed back enough to keep a good ratio, so now I never use them.

59 Nov 27, 2009 at 04:17 by p2pfreakkk

With regards to my comment @49 ,
I should have added h33t and 1337x too as the sites I would now ONLY visit other than TPB which is still the best and most trusted site in the entire internet !!!

RIP MiniNova…thanks for all you have done so far for the BTCommunity AND thanks for raising the bar for an ‘indexing’ site, which were all mostly full of shites before you came to the picture !!!

68 Nov 27, 2009 at 05:28 by Vertor? Be warned...

Vertor seems such a scam… I requires you to sign up to download and shows only fake torrents (atleast thats what I got when not signed up)

If you want real guarantee and speed, go either Torrentzilla or iLoveTorrents. They’re private and you don’t pay a dime.

69 Nov 27, 2009 at 05:46 by hmmm

“Thankfully, there are still plenty of alternatives for those BitTorrent users who are looking for the latest Ubuntu, OpenSUSE or Fedora release.”

right… because that’s what most people use bittorrent for…

70 Nov 27, 2009 at 05:48 by p2pfreakkk

@64 ..How come Vertor is a scam ?

If I use a site like torrentz.com to look for a torrent, it lists the sites (e.g monova, vertor, tpb etc) which has the torrent.

99% of the time I end up clicking Vertor ( if the site link is there ) because:

1] it is the only site which allows me to see the content of the torrent as a ’snapshot’ or ’screenshot’ ..e,g: a movie will have six screenhots randomly taken from the avi/mkv file.
If its fake the scrrens will show as corrupt. So i can easily skip !

2] if a music torrent is listed as say 320kbps, Vertor also includes:

a. a audio sample which user can preview before downloading

b. the bit rate of the file on the samples( so u can make out if its actually 320 kbps, vbr, cbr etc )

I am still not aware of any other sites which has these features… normally for other sites I have to rely on the comments from the downloaders.

Also u don’t need to sign-up to use Vertor.

So pls check ur facts before you make a stupid comment about a website !

Its time for an DHT based search engine!

Publish the keyword hash’s in the DHT associated with the magnet link.

This way you can find any file you want by filename.

Just like eMule can.

To get Reliable releases the Uploaders could sign the torrents with a PK schema so users can verify the got search results to be genuine from the wanted releasers.

I know that that’s not what all of the BT community wants, cause you could make great money out of link sides.

But its time to say goodby to link sides and do entirely decentralized.

BT needs to morph into a network of peers only without any central hubs like tracker ware and link sides still are.

Lets embrase the future
David X.

Well all though who moaned about private trackers and their ilk on Mininova are starting to see their benefit. I suggest you go to

http://www.invitescene.com

which tracks invites for private sites including some of the really good sites, as well as the good bread and butter private trackers like IPT.

Just be warned you had better learn to seed and share or you WILL be banned.

Maybe this will help the scene as leeching is out of control on TPB and Mininova: seeding is good manners people. Just leave your torrents on your list for 48 hours and let it upload. I truly agree with Steve (Comment 312) the major benefit for me is not TS, Cams, or DVDScrs, it is twofold; old films and rarities and independents, which are usually 10x better than studio shite, and for 1080 bluerays which take forever but look amazing even through a projector… use 1080 as your search term. Be waned if all your hard drives are FAT32 most will be too large. Download to your Computer HD and then swap out. Mac users, just check you have a drive that is Mac Extended (CMD i will tell you how the disk is formatted).

Finally, this is a social revolution – believe in freedom of speech and go the movies, buy a film you really like, and keep entertainment affordable by dowloading the fark out of the net.

Peace out…

why are these sites listed here ??

Some of the sites mentioned in the first 10-15 comments deserve to be included in there place

And yeah, kickasstorrents is the new mininova. :)

119 Nov 27, 2009 at 15:34 by bamkixass

guess I’ll have to burn my Mininova t-shirt

120 Nov 27, 2009 at 15:37 by h

I with you’d cut that list down to 3 or something. Public trackers gain strength through numbers or more specifically having community/ comments on torrents about whether they’re working or not, etc.

btjunkie gets my vote for where everybody should move

121 Nov 27, 2009 at 15:46 by mustangx

I don;t think we need a major new player to replace mininova. I know habits of most BT users and they do use and check multiple sites anyway. in my opinion Kickass , Ahashare and Extratorrent are worth mentioning . I LOVE 1337x.org and personally do check and trust h33t.com for softwares when needed. mininova was a great site but it was NOT one stop shopping ever and I don’t think there will ever be a site that offers one stop shopping.

i recommended;

If torrentreactor is on the list then this list is crap.
Torrentreactor is the biggest spamming torrent site on the interweb and NONE of the torrents are actually what they are supposed to be.

This site doesn’t use torrents, but lists rapidshare/netload/megashare/etc. links to uploaded content.

http://irfree.com

Warning: I would advise against using anything but Firefox or Google Chrome with AdBlock enabled to view their site. The unpaid version is loaded with ads.

ten behoeve van Mininova heb ik het gedicht in het engels vertaald:

Mount the Trojans, gather the worms
The battle is on for Web and Crown
en when we’ve all got weary
and no enemy has left
we will download the latest films
and we’ll drink Mead from the skull
of the defeated Brain*.

(* the Dutch organization which is harassing the Dutch downloader’s and download sites is called BREIN; which translated in English means BRAIN.)

Vertor is full of trojanz of viruses. Barely click on one link there and catch photo_id.exe trojan and some other got blocked.

I removed it but hell, who puts such site on no1 ?

Metapirate.com

The best movie torrent alternative out there. A bit choppy at times but when it’s up it’s pure awesome.

It’s funny because I see alot of torrent sites, some good some bad,but the real trick here are trackers.

Your torrent is only as good as the trackers you add into it!

I just tried to pull up the following sites: Vector, Torrentreactor, BTjunkie, Fulldls, and Monova but all showed McAfee SiteAdvisor and WOT “red” warnings. We should probably stay away from them.

For anime:

143 Nov 27, 2009 at 17:59 by Sasha

mononova.org is down at the moment

144 Nov 27, 2009 at 18:05 by nah in bmore

Anyway, on a sidenote what really made Mininova tempting was the clean layout of the site and frontpage….alot of these other GOOD sites have terrible layouts right now, yes they are still good…but the clutter on the frontpage is diorientating.

Also, these sites should create an algorithim like Mininova had that displays the most interesting torrents for more than just your standard movies, music, and games categories. Should be all, including Anime,Books,Music,Movies,Games,Other,Software,Comics, and so forth on a clean easily readable frontpage. IO particularly think this is why Mininova and Demonoid were successful. If you were aimlessly browsing like comment #10 said and you find something interesting easily you are more likely to come back to the site. The closest I’ve found to a setup like this is AliveTorrents.

Though my other picks in the meantime while Demonoid is still down would include AliveTorrents, Leakz.net, and Extratorrent.

152 Nov 27, 2009 at 19:24 by Stop big brother

BAND TOGETHER! I think all the large torrent site should make all their code open source so anyone can setup their own torrent search site in hours… Make it so there are so many that it is impossible for them to fight everyone. Also, since corporations are cheap to setup and domains are only $8 have a site like this that doesn’t have any torrents but instead tracks the torrent sites themselves… Therefore, by the time someone sued a site like minova or whatever, it would already be gone and not exist anymore.

153 Nov 27, 2009 at 19:44 by LHR

Oh, yes, plenty of sites, problem is, most are invites , and they are all closed

Most of the privates sites dont have enough members so seeding is usually a BIG proble,

@48:

“My experience with private trackers is that they are great for TV shows, and recent movie releases.

They fall flat on their face when trying to find older (even by just a few years) movies.”

You obviously have not found the private trackers you need then. I can think of 2 private movie trackers that pretty much have everything recent and old.

As for private trackers:
1 for scene with fast uploads after pre
1 for music
1 for obscure movies
1 for Holly wood releases.

Pretty much all you need.

Just came here from Lifehacker. Some nice sites in the comments too apart from the obvious ones like btjunkie and isohunt…

ahashare.com looks like a good community, 1337x.org has a great community too.

That http://leakz.net looks awesome. They show content info for movies, games etc. (how do they do it without a community ??) Quite similar to http://files24.com (but approach is different and files24 is even better when it comes to movies) These two sites are gonna rock my days henceforth :)

It’s a private tracker, but currently has open signups. It’s also a general tracker, so you can find what you’re looking for very easily (most of the members are willing to up anything you want) and has an awesome community. After looking around for some decent general private trackers, I’ve decided to stay at Race the Net. It’s the bomb!!

When’s the establishment going to get it and just change their business model. They are going to go broke trying to take one torrent site down while 10 more pop up.

None of those sites you mention offer real encoders or release groups. All of those sites just index torrents. Try this one:

http://extratorrent.com Home of ExtraScene Release Group. We offer ALL verified torrents, and TONS of great encoders and releasers put their work their, themselves, NOT via some indexed bot like the others you mentioned :-/ We have a dedicated HUGE community of peers, our own tracker (yes we accept ALL public trackers too) and we have great moderators and site admins who are online 24/7 making sure that the content on our site remains fresh and active.
great encoders all you do is retag everyons work fine your own cams ExtraScene

Show us one release that’s retagged? Douchebag. Every single encode by ES is done by them. Every one is a single cd, 700mb encode. Check the copyrights. IMAGiNE uses one click apps and its been proven, by the tags of Fairuse, DVDFab, and ALSO, TMPEEGENC on ALL their releases. Noobs dont even know how to encode :-/

There are a huge number of dumbasses in this thread who don’t understand the concept of the world “alternative” (meaning similar to).

- Private sites are NOT alternatives. (“private” is anyplace with restricted memebership and/or requires DHT/PEX turned off and/or a site-specific tracker URL.)

- Sites that don’t let you edit your upload descriptions are NOT alternatives. (That rules out any warehouse that tells you your “upload already exists” because the damn place spidered your upload on a different site faster than you could hit “Submit” in your other browser tab.)

- Sites without a “community” are NOT alternatives. (Nobody wants to post at a site where nobody says “Thanks!”.)

200 Nov 29, 2009 at 00:01 by Sceener

http://www.InviteScene.com is the best.

@196

None of those sites you mention offer real encoders or release groups. All of those sites just index torrents.

- Which is why people use them.

We have a dedicated HUGE community of peers

- No, no you don’t. ET is full of hit and runners… far more than any other. They also rate the quality of movies before watching them. If you have a 10th of what any other site out there has, I’d be shocked.

Show us one release that’s retagged?

- Every. Single. One. of your wrestling “DVDs”

Check the copyrights.

- WTF? You can’t “copyright” something that’s stolen, n00b. And most of your cams are ripped off from SecretMyth.

Once again listed! Thanks TorrentFreak!

203 Nov 29, 2009 at 00:55 by dP

Ok I have been testing out all these sites. Lets do a rundown.

Ahashare- It sucks. There is no variety of torrents and obviously the people on these comments have some affiliation with the site. It is horrible.

Torrentzap- Wonderful. Out of all these sites it is the most like Mininova. The way it returns results, and the variety of torrents that it has.

Mononova- Garbage. Nothing like mininova. When you do searches it gives you a bunch of fake sponsored links above the actual torrent results. Just someone trying to make some money off the mininova opportunity.

btJunkie- This site is decent… But it is ugly. They use too much BOLD fonts… Site needs a redesign… BUT. Has GREAT variety.

isoHunt- I like, but not enough content. A little old school on the design, kind of looks like old gaming forums.

BitSnoop- Almost there. They tried to set up their site to mimic Google. I love that. But there seems to be a lot of fake torrents. And while it has a system to fight that, it won’t work without a user base. The user base seems to be trash uploaders. The sites layout listings is a bit confusing and options are kind of lame. Good attempt, but needs work.
This would be the perfect site with users. If the makers of this site want some tips let me know in the comments with an email and I’ll let you know what you can do with the site ;)

I would recommend TorrentZap for all mininova users.

After kicking the tires of over three-dozen would-be-great torrent sites over the last couple days, I’ve narrowed on the best choice for us all to move over to: http://www.ahashare.com

It has/supports….

– DHT/PEX-enabled (“public”) torrents
– User page for uploaded torrents
– Users can edit their own torrents. (Yay!)
– Torrent description page supports graphics, reveals contained files, and has a comment section
– Site is free to join
– Site has a community forum.
– Site is reasonably fast.
– Site has good scrape-count seed/peer statistics
– Has a pretty good search-engine.

In short, it’s almost perfect. See you all there.

(Disclosure: I do NOT work for, own, moderate, or vend stuff there.)

——————

REPLY TO #203:
> Ahashare- It sucks. There is no variety of torrents…

– I gave it my “best replacement” rating due to its FEATURE SET. (What variety of torrents does Mininova have now? Zero. Demonoid? Zero.) Ahashare is just NEW — that’s why there aren’t a lot of torrents there. BUT IT HAS A GREAT TOOLSET. Torrent description pages have a kind of Demonoid feel to them, and display a lot of information with accurate seed/peer counts.

> Torrentzap- Wonderful. Out of all these sites it is the most like Mininova.

Does not support user editing of uploaded torrent descriptions — THAT’S A DEAL-KILLER. (I have requested this in forum comments.)

> Mononova- Garbage.
> btJunkie- This site is decent…

These are just spider-bot warehouses. Good if you’re looking for something really fast — but suck if you’re an uploader who wants a sense of style and control. No community forums.

> isoHunt- I like, but not enough content.

Too much work involved in uploading. No sense of community.

I liked how mininova could sort yesterday’s torrents by seeds so I could run down the list and download the stuff that I liked..

Torrentzap doesn’t do that, despite looking closest to mininova. If only they could add that feature on this page:

So, with that in mind.. I suppose the only choice I have is:

1. http://torrentz.com/
2. http://btjunkie.org/

I just use the Vuze search. I’m new to this and stupidly, didnt realise I had other options. Is there a search like Vuze that checks all available torrents and directs you to the best one. Cheers. G

http://www.plentyoftorrents.com has got to be the most popular for searches right now.

They also have a list of other torrent sites.

try using google to search for torrents. Works well. Just be careful w/ what you’re downloading.

Farewell Mininova :(
I’m sure some of the displaced members will find http://trackeraccess.org a nice alternative. Normaly closed Registration but they are currently open.

231 Nov 30, 2009 at 06:59 by corsutscorner

new private site looking for members and it doesn’t require an invite – horror/sci-fi/fantasy

http://www.corsutscorner.com

http://www.SPEED.CD is very good privat tracker.

all the newest sh”t…
just check out and be happy

233 Nov 30, 2009 at 08:49 by gjn

just tried monova but it requires you to login to download a torrent.

this means you can’t download via rss and the rss feed is broken too. no timestamp, no torrents.

not a good choice if you want rss based autodownloads.

234 Nov 30, 2009 at 08:56 by Me

Just went to http://www.trackeraccess.org
Its awsome.

235 Nov 30, 2009 at 10:07 by wonderwhy-er

Checked many and closest to mininova at least by front page seems to be http://www.torrentzap.com/
also “latest by category” that show pretty relevant today/yesterday torrents in same way mininova did. Other sites aether do not have that or show not really relevant stuff (probably cuz they are not as popular yet)

236 Nov 30, 2009 at 15:25 by Mininova

The best clone is one with nearly the exact same name, Mininova.biz! just add in a “biz” instead of an “org” and you get all the torrents you want.

where is btmon?

239 Nov 30, 2009 at 17:18 by R

I highly recommend http://www.torrentzap.com and http://extratorrent.com. Both are extremely similar to Mininova (especially TorrentZap – it’s so similar it’s nostalgic), with similar features and layout. http://www.kickasstorrents.com is also good.
The thing that made Mininova great was the fact that everyone posted comments there, so everyone needs to start posting on Mininova’s successor so that we can all get behind it!

Think this can help:

I think this is the best alternative to mininova

241 Nov 30, 2009 at 21:51 by Anonymous

Due to some recent site closures (good sites at that too) we have decided to open the doors to give those people a chance to join our site and community, if you know of anyone affected then let them know and post wherever possible saying we are open

If any of them want to be uploaders and can’t because they just joined the site they can send a message to the helpdesk and we’ll sort it for them

This will only be for a limited time however and the next time maybe 12 months before we open the doors to the general public again

RIP the sites that fall by choice or forced

Why bother with just one torrent site when you can have access to 16 from one location?

I’ve been using http://www.Entertane.com for awhile, its great. Or http://www.torrenttree.com is another alternative.

245 Dec 01, 2009 at 00:33 by vienna906

I used to visit Mininova daily, so it will be sorely missed by me. I then turned to The Pirate Bay and my computer got a virus, so needless to say, I won’t be going back there.

246 Dec 01, 2009 at 00:50 by Dave S

can any one tell me a site that gives comments like mininova i hate d/l fakes

247 Dec 01, 2009 at 02:34 by jim bob

IPTORRENTS is by far the best torrent site so if you can get an invite go for it

248 Dec 01, 2009 at 03:59 by ana

I agree with others that none of the above can really replace mininova because they don’t have the comments sections. up/down ratings aren’t enough, it’s always best to know if people are downvoting it because it’s poor quality or if it’s fake or what.

and this might be a bit shallow, but they’re all fuck ugly! you’d think there was a web developer somewhere in their community.

i guess i’m just sticking with isohunt and when that fails very carefully googling.

253 Dec 02, 2009 at 13:23 by A-Non-E-Mus

Other torrent sites just don’t measure up to Mininova. I can’t find the next episode to any of the TV shows I watch on any other site. Maybe there’s a reason for this, but it’s becoming annoying.

254 Dec 02, 2009 at 14:01 by Anonymous

Please someone just make a clone of what Mininova was, NO ONE WILL BLAME YOU OR HATE YOU.

I found a HOTTEST interracial club =MixedConnect *.* C0M=for black Women and white Men, or black Men and white Women, to interact with each other. Interracial is not a problem here, but a great merit to cherish!

The Pirate Bay is the best

263 Dec 05, 2009 at 00:38 by Merlinox

I use frequently Torrent Predator. Mininova was the best, but when it didn’t find something T.P. did dirty work.
