10 Most Pirated TV-Shows on BitTorrent

Written by Ernesto on September 17, 2008

TV shows are by far the most wanted files via BitTorrent, and according to some, it’s fast becoming the modern day TiVo. But what are all those people downloading?

prison breakLast week we’ve shown that most TV-series are downloaded by people from outside the US, 96% to be exact. Release delays are one of the major reasons why people use BitTorrent to download TV-shows.

Non-US fans of Prison Break and other TV-shows sometimes have to wait for weeks or even months before their favorite show airs on TV in their country. However, this is slowly changing. Earlier this week Fox announced that Jack Bauer’s “24″ will air simultaneously in the US and Germany. We expect that this example will be followed in other countries as well.

We’ll have to see whether this has an effect on our weekly download charts. The data presented here is collected by TorrentFreak from a representative sample of BitTorrent sites and is for informational and educational reference only.

At the end of the year we will publish a list of most downloaded TV-shows for the entire year, like we did last December.

Top Downloads September 7 - September 14

Ranking (last week) TV-show
1 (1) Prison Break
2 (new) Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

5 (2) Gossip Girl

7 (new) True Blood
8 (4) Stargate Atlantis
9 (6) One Tree Hill

Some countries are sometimes a year or more behind.

The wire finished months ago.

I don’t think that the start of a show in an other country is the problem - i think it’s the localization. Frankly said: It mostly sucks. It sucks hard. You can’t watch Futurama in german, because it’s just crap. Hell, I would pay for a channel, that airs the shows in original. But nooooo, we have to watch cheaply synchronized shows, with speakers who don’t get a single joke right.
As long as they sync TV-Shows I won’t watch them. At least not on TV.

@3: That’s right. For example in Germany:
Dexter hasn’t even reached the normal TV-Stations, neither has Prison Break Season 3. Californication is just about to start with Season 1.

@gabster

I feel for the Germans..there’s no way you guys should have to wait another second for the genius that is Dexter!

8 Sep 17, 2008 at 12:13 by ALIS

I totally agree with Gabster, for some reason i had a german satellite channel here(finland) few years back and the dubbing was awful. You cant dub a comedy series, it just isnt right, nearly all the jokes arent funny in other lanquages. Other series might be ok if done really well but thats not gonna happen.
And back to the point, good series allways come to finland a year or more late, i think stargate atlantis hasnt even started here, dexter second season started, prison break is atleast one season behind… They leave me no other choice than bittorrent.

“We’ll have to see whether this has an effect on our weekly download charts.”

probably - it’s competition for piracy. many people would rather just turn on a TV and have it come on. of course watching it without commercials and watching it when and where you want is nice too, as is with piracy :)

“Sons of Anarchy” is a great show. People should watch it. Its on FX.

11 Sep 17, 2008 at 12:42 by dirk

Yes the awfull german dubbing is another reason why you don’t want to watch them from local broadcasters.

12 Sep 17, 2008 at 14:15 by Gabster

@bud: I agree, Sons of Anarchy looks very promising. As does the strip, it may be a clone of criminal intent with a CSI:Miami-ish setting, but i like the sarcastic dialogs.
@7: Luckily I have some friends in the US, who recorded Dexter for me and sent me the episodes. And yes, no one should miss it.

13 Sep 17, 2008 at 14:18 by Gabster

@ALIS: Have you seen the German version of two and a half man? *shudders*. They even managed to make the title sound uninteresting. It’s called “Mein cooler Onkel Charly” which translates “my cool uncle charly”. Boooring

Soon House will be here too :)

15 Sep 17, 2008 at 16:52 by CMG

Yeeaah I’m glad to see Prison Break at number 1 again, the show truly deserves it. If I ever end up talking about it with friends I always say to the people who haven’t seen it to just give it a chance.

16 Sep 17, 2008 at 17:07 by bud

@Gabster: Dexter is awesome. Watched both seasons this summer and can’t wait for season 3.

17 Sep 17, 2008 at 17:28 by meh

I know these shows are probably good.. but I just cant stand all the drama jerking they do.. its like a constant yank on your emotions.. all the time.

They never give you answers, always making you want to tune in to the next episode.. I just cant stand that shit.. lol.

Thats why I like shows like

The Office
Family Guy
American Dad
Planet Earth

22 Sep 17, 2008 at 20:31 by col mcg

Sons of Anarchy is truly appalling.
Really really fucking kick the cat shit.At your own risk

23 Sep 17, 2008 at 20:39 by Scyther

pfff…only if months! E.g. in central-eastern Europe it is years to premiere a US show…House MD: 2 years! PB: 1 year! And as fan of Stargate Atlantis, which is not broadcasted, the only source is…mininova ;)

24 Sep 18, 2008 at 01:26 by zarathustra

Chalk up another vote for Colbert & The daily Show - & I’m not even Merkin!

Sons of Anarchy is great fun - I love anything by Ron Perlman. =]

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles & Dexter both rule, but 90210 & One Tree Hill? Are you fuckers serious?

I’ve stopped watching synchronized TV show when I found out about Bittorrent.

-Prisonbreak 1st season was great, the 3rd not so much…
-Dexter like it very much, if you don’t know it def. worth a try.
-The Wire to me is the best tv show every, but it differs from the usual scheme used in tv shows and might not work for the Pavlov’s dogs among us…
-House MD happy the new season started and happy to see more of Jennifer Morrison :)
-Battlestar Galactica
-The Daily Show - http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes (can be watched wordwide, one day after it aired)
If you start the show, than pause it and wait for it to buffer completely, you can switch FireFox to “Work Offline”. If you watch it now the three 30 sec. commercials will be skipped, making it ad-free :)
-The Colbert Report (see the url above)
-Weeds and Atlantis aren’t working for me anymore and I stopped watching them, tho the first seasons were fun…

There are good British shows as well. My favorites are “Wire in the blood” (9/10 stars from me), Hellskitchen, Masterchef and of course TopGear…

Links to new shows might be found here: http://www.lateshows.org/

40 Sep 27, 2008 at 06:11 by herbstwerk

i don’t care that much about the delay between us and germany/austria… just give me dual channel audio - can’t be that hard to realize with digital tv almost all over the place now. i can’t stand german localization and i didn’t learn english to view content in a different language than it’s produced.
