ACTA Is DEAD After European Parliament Vote

Today at 12:56 CET, the European Parliament decided whether ACTA would be ultimately rejected or whether it would drag on into uncertainty. In a 478 to 39 vote, the Parliament decided to reject ACTA once and for all. This means that the deceptive treaty is now dead globally.

This is a day of celebration.

This is the day when citizens of Europe and the world won over unelected bureaucrats who were being wooed and lobbied by the richest corporations of the planet.

The battleground wasn’t some administrative office, but the representatives of the people – the European Parliament – which decided in the end to do its job beautifully, and represent the people against special interests.

The road to today’s victory was hard and by no means certain.

478 against, 39 in favor and 165 abstentions

What lead us here?

Six months ago, the situation looked very dark. It was all but certain that ACTA would pass unnoticed in silence. The forces fighting for citizens’ rights tried to have it referred to the European Court of Justice in order to test its legality and to buy some time. But then, something happened.

A monster by the name of SOPA appeared in the United States. Thousands of websites went dark on January 18 and millions of voices cried out, leaving Congress shell-shocked over the fact that citizens can get that level of pissed off at corporate special interests. SOPA was killed.

actaIn the wake of this, as citizens realized that they don’t need to take that kind of corporate abuse lying down and asking for more, the community floodlights centered on ACTA.

The activism carried over beautifully to defeat this monster. Early February, there were rallies all over Europe, leaving the European Parliament equally shell-shocked.

The party groups turned on a cent and declared their opposition to ACTA in solidarity with the citizen rallies all over the continent, after having realized what a piece of shameless mail-order legislation it really was, to the horrors of the corporate shills who thought this was a done deal. Those shills tried, tried hard, tried right up until today, to postpone the vote on ACTA past the attention of the public and the activists.

Alas, they don’t understand the net. And there’s one key thing right there: the net doesn’t forget.

Parliament members right after the vote

But the key takeaway here is that it was us, the activists, that made this happen. Everyone in the European Parliament are taking turns to praise all the activists across Europe and the world for drawing their attention to what utter garbage this really was, not some run-of-the-mill rubberstamp paper, but actually a really dangerous piece of proposed legislation. Everybody thanks the activists for that. Yes, that’s you. You should lean back, smile, and pat yourself on the back here. Each and every one of us has every reason to feel proud today.

What comes next?

In theory, ACTA could still come into force between the United States and a number of smaller states. Ten states have been negotiating it, and six of those need to ratify it to have it come into force. In theory, this could become a treaty between the United States, Morocco, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, and Switzerland. (But wait, the Mexican Senate has already rejected ACTA. As has Australia and Switzerland in practice. Oh well… a treaty between the United States and Morocco, then, in the unlikely event that the United States will actually and formally ratify it. You can see where this is going.)

As described before on TorrentFreak, without the support of the European Union, ACTA is dead. Doesn’t exist.

The European Commissioner responsible for the treaty, Karel de Gucht, has said that he will ignore any rejections and re-table it before the European Parliament until it passes. That’s not going to happen. Parliament takes its dignity very seriously and does not tolerate that kind of contempt, fortunately. This is something relatively new in the history of the European Union’s democracy – the first time I saw Parliament stand up for its dignity was during the Telecoms Package, where the Commission also tried to ram through three-strikes provisions. (Instead, Parliament made “three strikes” schemes illegal in the entire European Union.)

That said, many of the bad things in ACTA will return under other names. For the lobbyists, this is a nine-to-five job of jabbing against the legislation until it gives way. Just another day at work. We need to remain vigilant against special interests who will return again, again, and again, until we make sure that the legislative road for them is completely blocked. We must remain watchful.

But not today.

Today, we celebrate a job extraordinarily well done.

Today, on July 4, Europe celebrates a day of independence from American special interests.

Today, we stood up for our most basic rights against corporate giants, and won.

Congratulations to all of us, and thanks to all brothers and sisters on the barricades across the world who made this happen.

Who knew they’d actually listen? Then again when a large number of people stand up together they could hardly ignore that.

    One up for democracy!

      True!
But lets not forget the 39 scummies who voted yes, anyone have names on them?

      Congrats everyone!

         And the 169 Abstentions!

        • Corruption loses THIS TIME

AKA…the people who are afraid to be seen to vote against the corporate overlords of this world.
The default should be “the side of the people”, and seeing the 169 Abstentions are not on the side of the people (they did not stand up for the people), they are nearly as bad as the 39 votes for.

But those 39 voters have a LOT to answer for.

        • http://twitter.com/MAFIAAFire MAFIAAFire

Yes, the 169 abstentions are bad and cowards, but we need to make an example of the ones who are openly against the people: and thats exactly what we at MAFIAAFire are working on.

Just give us some time please, its been a rough few months.

      • Rob

The 168 abstentions were those who would have voted ‘Yes’ had they thought it would be passed

ACTA was not something you could sit on the fence about, unless you hoped to hide your true intentions or save your seat at the next elections

The 39 clearly show that they don’t represent the citizens who voted for them and should be shown the door

        • Nobody

Elections? This is europe. We don’t elect our european government. They choose themselves on their own, so they can keep it in the family.

Whatever the outcome would of been, I say we are getting royaly screwed. The installment of a modern, western sovjet uniun. the new third reich.

To quote George Carlin: “The table is tilted folks, the game is rigged. And nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care.”

          @Nobody
actually we DO elect our representatives in the European parliament. you’re probably thinking of the commission, which is useless unelected baggage that Europe can do without!

(Kind of double posting from above, but our reply is kind of the same so I hope you will forgive me)

        • http://profiles.google.com/zerianis10 Christopher Kidwell

MAFIAAFire, that might work in a perfect world where you can get ‘some else’ into politics. In the real world, it’s a bunch of people who are interrelated and who are basically (to an extent) carbon copies of each other.

I honestly think that we are going to have to have the second American/etc. revolution (violent) very soon in order to get these people out of power.

Perhaps forbidding anyone who is in one of those ‘political families’ from holding public office for a good 50 years.

        • Cornishtommy

When they are sitting on a fence, it makes it real easy to shot them, when they have their hands up voting, thats just hunting season.(I don’t advocate actually killing anyone..not a psyychopath, just vote them out of their office)

Most MAFIAA votes were from France and Italy.

        • Xar8645693

Actually, most MAFIAA votes were from France and *Germany*. But thanks for trying.

        • ndmushroom

And a very big Thank you to the Poles who effectively changed the game when no one really thought it could be changed. Just look at the stats for the (huge group of) Polish MEPs: 100% success, unmatched! Without the polish protests, I really don’t think ACTA would have failed.

        • zalbaag

France, germany and italy indeed, but there’s more. If you look up the groups they are related with, you’ll see that the majority is right-centred or eurosceptic (nationalists). For France, that means the UMP party is behind it. Always hated right-sided parties. Especially nationalists. This is a great victory!

      • Cmart

Applauding democracy while asking for the names of those who voted for? You sound like an old-school communist, not very domocratic and not a community I would like to join.

        • Lelle

Well if they are elected by the people then should we not be able to see how they vote? How else are we to know if they hold to their promises?

        • Cmart Doesnt Understand

Dumb comment. The best thing about democracy is the ability to vote in someone else if the current person is not acting in the way you want. If enough people agree with you then bye bye. What is wrong with finding out who not to vote for in the next European elections? Doesn’t sound like communism to me, and quite frankly I don’t think you fit in this community anyway :p

        • Guest

          @Cstupid

Don’t want politicians who ignored the will of the people to be voted out of office?  It sounds like you hate democracy and support fascism.

        • Cornishtommy

Cmart….Voting against the better interests of people you claim to represent is a misappropriation of the powers trusted to you by the people.
Being courted by big business is not democracy, thats capitalism, baby. in its sickest form. Religon and politics should not be mixed nor should greed and self interest be mixed with democracy in a vote.
If I find out a british vote was cast fore, I for one will be potioning for that persons instant removal from the european parliment.
And communisms a great idea on paper……but, human nature will never allow it to work. And I am proud of being signed up against ACTA! And to finish Liberalism is not Communism.. Go pick up a book on politics in the 20th century.

        • ndmushroom

Yeah, cause we all know Democracy and Accountability shouldn’t go together. No, wait…

        • Scary_Devil_Monastery

Of course we want their names. As elected representatives they are accountable to their bosses – Us.

And if they do a piss-poor job of carrying out the mandates they’ve been given and/or demonstrably treat their boss with contempt then their names SHOULD go on the big wall of shame.

And a few years down the road they will, instead of being re-elected, be shown the door, preferably with black marks in their CV.

THAT is how democracy works. An ordinary citizen has every call on anonymity visavi his peers. An elected representative has no such thing regarding the decisions s/he makes in OUR name.

Stick cameras in their faces 24/7 and upload the videos to YouTube under the title 39 TRAITORS.

        • Dfdw

If we make them understand that we won’t even let the 39 go away without any scratch they will most likely get their act together next time and ACTA 2.0 getting rejected as well when it comes our way.

These are the EU parliament seating plans, are the green dots in the screenshot above accurate? Do they indicate the position of the member who voted?

If so, all you need to do is look them up on the chart and pick the appropriate house (Brussels or Strasbourg)

It’s not over, they can just introduce it at the national level.

      • Akashka1995

No, they cant – Thats the point of the EU, any country in it may not pass laws that’ve previously been banned by the EU, so… No. Sure, America and their corrupt government can keep trying, but most of us europeans are safe.

        • kaas

I would like a source on that. First of all, EU hasn’t “banned” the law, it just didn’t pass in the parliament, second of all, specific countries still maintain sovereignity on a national, so they can basically pass whatever law they please.

        • luk

Yeah, we’re waiting for them to come with ACTA to us in Poland.
          We’ll “welcome” them warmly.

        • http://profiles.google.com/zerianis10 Christopher Kidwell

kaas, you apparently have missed that when the EU rejects a law, it basically means that the law in question was illegal and illegitimate and therefore, wouldn’t stand up if taken to the EU courts.

        • How Do I Shot?

        Between what…Marocko and the US?

No, ACTA can not be reintroduced until it reemerges under the guise of another multinational treaty – such as TPP for instance.

However, you are half right in this – since certain key clauses in ACTA may very well be hammered down on a national level. Which still cannot cause the harm a treaty with enforced international cooperation would.

And it’s a given that the “stakeholders” involved in drafting ACTA will salvage as much as they possibly can.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=551987400 Dae’Ros Dai’Meyez

so awhile ago i suggested to my friends if we could we should try to pit the special interest against each othere where we could and right now it’s looking like we would have some serious leverage trying to get ISPs to lobby against intellectual property, also web hosting companies, seedbox providers, etc. We could pit them against the content holders like the MPAA etc and have some counter lobbying going on for exactly the opposite interest: abolishing intellectual property. This will put poltiicans in a rock and a hard place and might actually get us some reform. This would force poltiicans to vote their conscience because either way they voted there would be an influx of dollars against them.
piracy has CREATED industries that would go away if it was ever seriously taken care of plus it will silence them, they won’t put forward any more bills like SOPA and ACTA anymore because they’ll be too terrified of how we’ll respond once they realize there is money to be made in abolishing all rights for content creators they’ll shit themselve and come to us to BEG  divide and conquer right? well that’s what i’d do. : pit the ISPs against the MPAA etc.
we finally have behemoths on our side, it’s time we use them.

      • Guest

Don’t get me wrong, I am glad ACTA failed and I think these bills/laws/etc. they’ve been trying to pass are an affront to free speech, but there is something you should know.

Remember the thing with MegaUpload? Turns out the guy was MAKING MONEY off it, millions of dollars from pop-up and banner ads. He was filling his own pockets. So don’t be so quick to think that the pirates are the good guys.

The real heroes/victims here are the Joe Average, who can’t pick up the latest pop hits because the UK is behind the US in release dates by a year for no good reason, or who can’t rent a movie after the local (obsolete) small town video store closed down because Canadian Netflix doesn’t have all the content the US one has and Hulu/etc. are unavailable in Canada. And that’s just the scratches, obviously.

The true reason the internet must remain a frontier is so that information is available to all and the internet doesn’t become a tool for Big Brother like oh-so-many cyberpunk novels and films. Piracy is just a side effect, and if you have any decency you will use it only when you have no other choice or you want to spite a corporation for putting DRM rootkits or mandatory can’t-play-the-media-at-all-without-it online validation checks in their music/movies/games… You get the picture.

Piracy is a privilege, not a right. If you can buy it without being treated like a criminal, don’t become one just to get it “free”. That’s what gave these greedy jerks this particular foothold in the first place, after all.

        • Scary_Devil_Monastery

“Remember the thing with MegaUpload? Turns out the guy was MAKING MONEY off it, millions of dollars from pop-up and banner ads. He was filling his own pockets.”

Megaupload was a cyberlocker. It allowed people to upload and download material other individuals had placed there. Nothing more. It also abided by draconian takedown laws to a T.

What you are in essence saying is that the owner of the local hardware store should be considered “bad” for putting up ads inside the store where he sells screwdrivers. I think you need to think your arguments over once again.

“Piracy” is driven by human nature as a whole. It’s the urge of someone saying “Neat. I need to show this to people”. It’s a survival trait literally bred into humans for the last few million years to share any information we consider “valuable” or “interesting”.

And you are also approaching that debate from the reverse. The “right” in question is COMMUNICATION. If you have the right to communicate, piracy inevitably follows. That will never change.

That said there’s quite a lot of evidence that “copyright” is not and never has been either essential nor needed for the ability of an artist/creator to live off their work. So even the commercial aspect is a non-issue. You are basically saying that people like Kim Dotcom are “bad” because they can make money hand over fist for providing a neutral service.

And then blame him with an argument which would make Ford bad guys for providing so many getaway cars.

    • Biroccio

One thing that I am proud of being Italian is that Europe actually listen and care about people, whereas USA is controlled by corporations. If ACTA gets enforced in USA, I will go back to Italy where I do not get spied and I still have my freedom of speech.

        • Mau5 tank

It’s funny he calls us stupid but doesn’t even have the decency to use proper grammar and spelling. Probably not a native English speaker, but still.

And his only argument on how we are stupid is that we are fat, stupid (restated many times with no reason behind it), and our cultures are retarded. I admit, pop culture is fucking stupid, but there are worse things out there to hate on.

      • Markallenp

Hate Much. You can’t  hold the USA,s Jock. You.ll come crying when Europe starts a WW3 and you’ll want Americans to die for your sorry European ASS.  There is a reason our founding fathers started this country, to get away from your backwards ass continent. Europe will never get along and Americans suffer because of it.
You can have our pansy ass liberals that think goverment should hold their hands
we’ll take your independent thinking freedom loving people. Oh yeah did you forget Slavery was started by europeans primarily the Dutch. Learn some history Dumb ass

        • Trolly Pole

Oh, if I were you, I would go back and learn American History. Especially the slavery part. Started long before Europe was a collection of nation states, and America was one of the last places to outlaw it.

Also your love of the word “ass” (which should be “arse” as you are referring to the region of the body and not halfbreed donkey) is quite unsavory. One should try to be more eloquent, and use proper grammar and punctuation when trying to put forth a decisive opinion in writing. People would tend to be more receptive of it, instead of writing you off as some sort of poorly educated yahoo.

But, none the less, thank you for your input.

        • Tallyortoby

WW3 will never start in Europe but ALWAYS from the US or Israel as it stands now.
Your founding fathers until the early 20th century weren’t sure to keep English as your national language and it was a German who made the balance tilt towards English, otherwise you might be talking German as that was the other choice.
As to Bram, at least he tries to speak another language which I’m sure you never tried even to do, so don’t bash if you can’t do nothing else but speak English, and even at that you seem to be bad seeing all the typos you make.
With regards to you taking anything from Europe, clean up your act: Sub-prime crisis is not something that WE did but YOU, we do NOT hold war criminals without a trial WE have the International Criminal Court which you don’t recognize  because your leaders know fair well they could be tried for a fake war in Iraq, WE do NOT want your Monsanto Genetically Modified crap food, WE prefer our own grown stuff.
Oh, almost forgot: with all the wars the US waged, with the exception of WW2, you didn’t bring democracy to a single country… funny fact but the truth!!!
Finally, I’m pretty sure any European on here knows more about your country, your history and your politics then you do about any single nation in Europe, not to mention the EU, so please… don’t be patronizing and stay were you at meant to stay: on your porch holding your gun and jerking off thinking you are the shit.

Get your facts in order, Slavery was even in the Roman Empire, perhaps as long as civilization

      • Dat N.O. Boy

I’m an American and I strongly oppose the consumerism attitude that has crept into the back of the minds of millions in this country. I hate most of the new music (rap as an example) coming out of American labels’ asses. I really hate Hollywood.

However, let’s not get it twisted, Bram. I love my country and what it stands for, and if you think an American is just gonna let you bash their home, which you obviously know ”everything’ about, then be prepared to kiss the barrel of a 12 Gauge Remington, Colt .45, or any assortment of weapons stowed away in the closet(or where available).

Fuck you. Many fled Europe and came to North America seeking refuge from the tyranny of the Crown or a chance they otherwise would not have in Europe.

I do, however, hate American pop culture as the next like-minded civie, but you probably think that there exists one big culture in a land full of immigrants that bring their own culture. You stupid, rotten bitch. You motherless whore. You idiot. You imbecile. You deepthroating, ball-juggling sack of shit.

I’m from New Orleans. The Big Easy. The City That Care Forgot. Naw’lins. I should know a thing or two about culture, and in New Orleans, people of all cultures, all ethnicities(for the most part) live (somewhat) in harmony. There isn’t much of this one huge “shit culture” or “junk food chemicals” you so haphazardly orchestrated into your post, so pardon me if I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.

I get why people bash America for giving other countries a good, hard, long fucking. I also see why people hate England for placing its huge, hairy nuts on the world.
I also see the jealousy a lot of people have for the lifestyles provided in America.

Had you described America as ‘the master of hypocricy” in the 60s or 50s or 1800s and 1700s when the “EUROPEAN IMMIGRANTS were giving Natives a hard fucking, I’d gladly agree with you. Times change though.

Never forget WW2. Yup. I went there. I know the Europeans were extremely weakened, Nazi Germany included. However, think about what would’ve happened without US intervening(see what I did there?)? Half the world would probably be speaking German right now. Not to diminish the other Allied powers’ roles in the fight vs. Germany. Besides, America had its own war to fight that only involved itself and another Pacific powerhouse in question. May God have mercy on those the Fat Man sat on and the Little Boy antagonized.

What the fuck do you know about values? If you were merely talking about the gov’t, I’d say “Go write tomes on how the US gov’t blows!” But you’re talking about the American people, who (for the most part) really hate their gov’t for the shit it’s putting us through and then some. I know some of the most virtuous and honest people in this armpit of a city (Laplace, a New Orleans suburb), and not only will they be quick to take a bullet for me and vice versa, but if they don’t like something I do, they’ll let me have it.

I’m a huge fan of manga/anime and really respect Japan. Hell, if they weren’t full to the brim of NOx and their language wasn’ t so damn hard to understand, I’d move there if I ever get well off. Look up the Rape of Nanking if you’re really into Japan. You’ll probably never look at Japan ever again. That’s irrelevent.

The point is don’t be so quick to judge the people of a nation that you know nothing about. Kill our gov’t. Wave your dick(no matter how diminutive) at the corporate giants and Wall Street. Learn some manners, bitch. Fuck yo’ pussy.

        • Tallyortoby

Your comment is the typical crap americans write when they have nothing to say.
Most of you don’t even know what the EU is, which countries form it and wouldn’t be able to find it on a map, for some they don’t even know where their State is on the US map. Most americans are just pathetic morrons living from paycheck to paycheck not knowing what’s going on in the world.
I know what I’m talking about as I studied in the US, Ohio to be exact.
So please, shove your gun up your mouth and blow yourself up cuz you are ridiculous.
Le jour ou tu apprendra a parler le français qui est la langue maternelle de la Louisiane tu pourras parler. Und weil viele Auswanderer Deutsche waren solltest Du vorsichtig sein was Du redest, weil es viel Schrott ist.
Oh crap, I speak your language and you didn’t understand a word I just said.
Before an american teaches a European anything about moral, history and democracy, clean out in front of your on porch before.

        • spag

Look Tallyortoby: Io, un Americano, parlo una lingua che tu probabilmente non capisci! Oh crap, WHAT DID I JUST SAY? Mon dieu, il parle français aussi! Espanol? No es possible! We all have bad stuff on our porch, and Europe is no exception by far. Before you act all high and mighty, consider what happened in Germany during WW2. Consider what happened to the Cossacks. Consider all the bitter civil wars, inquisitions, and so forth that happened on your own doorstep. Then realize that you’re a fool to attack Americans like that. N.O. boy may have been a bit brash, but he’s rightly proud of his homeland. Us Americans may be in a spot of trouble, but clearly we’re not happy about it and are trying to change. So’s Europe. So chill. Accept some constructive criticism and reply with some of your own, but personal attacks will only fuel more senseless hatred and contempt.

    • MBONED

Hi, yes its been a hard few months for me too, not only did *MBONED* break down all my mobile communications, but they constantly hacked me loosing my Job developing a new game & corrupting my systems. So I exposed MBONED (US GOV Organization) by phone to Avaaz (Political organization) (Avaaz.org), Avaaz was then almost immediately under a heavy hack attack for 44 hours non-stop after receiving my information. I also uploaded a demo hack attack to You-tube along with music from Gil scott Heron ‘The Revolution will not be televised’ (apparently someone told me this was on You-tube news headlines, but I never got round to seeing it) I Did my upmost to fight these Fuckers, & when seeing the news yesterday I fucking celebrated with some friends & got mashed up ;) Maybe I should re-upload the hack attack demo, with the Junior Byles – Fade Away as the music now ;) Great news, I’m so happy!

    V for Victory!!!
It’s more than rejection – it’s devastating demonstration of anti-lobby awareness from our elected representatives. It’s first time EP shows it is not an automatic voting machine, but democratic agenda of EUROPEAN PEOPLE!

Now one can see, what sentence “WE ARE LEGION” really means, congrats!!! :-)

    #ACTA  is dead!!
I simply cannot say that enough times :) It’s almost like a dream come true, and this is one of THE happiest days of my many decades on this puny Planet of ours.

This vote also means the European Union and our Parliament is indeed properly democratic as our elected politicians voted as their constituents wanted them to vote – rather than the 39 corrupt traitors who voted with the corrupt MAFIAA and drug cartels.

Furthermore, this vote sends an important message to those in the USA’s corruptocracy that we in Europe will NOT tolerate big business dictating policy to us.  That said, I’m confident Rick F. is 100% correct that these vultures will keep pecking away at us – even if it takes YEARS – as they’ll keep trying to reintroduce everything in ACTA via EU law but in a smaller, piecemeal manner.  And that’s why we MUST remain vigilant.

But today we party, and party hard.  We deserve it, so cheers comrades.

    • GreatNews

Remember some of those 39 voters could have been either stupid, naive or incompetent. Not everyone of them will be corrupt. :D

      Great News though.
      478 against, 39 in favor
      What a great result

I wonder how many of those 478 people use youtube or filelockers or p2p?

  • No1_2_u

This is three in a row that we’ve won now  (i.e. SOPA, PIPA, ACTA).

The only problem is, now that ACTA is dead, the MAFIAA & its lap dogs will try & bring it back in another form; or, try & ram some other laws down our throat just so they can get what they want.

“The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.” Thomas Jefferson

    • ndmushroom

What about CISPA? I’m afraid we lost that one…

      • No1_2_u

Unfortunetly we did; we can’t win them all, but 3 out of 4 is a 75% average.

Imagine how much time, money, & effort these assholes have to spent on all those Bills/Laws/Treaties; @ that rate of failure they will go bankrupt, especially if WE were to start “voting” w/ our money (i.e. boycotting the corporations who finance this crap).

        • Scary_Devil_Monastery

Although it’s true that 75% wins is a very good situation that’s still a bit like saying that dodging 3 out of 4 bullets is a win.

Which is why reactive naysaying isn’t enough. In order to survive what you need to deal with is the person firing the gun – because he won’t run out of bullets.

And that means ensuring the type of politician who pushes for bills like ACTA, SOPA and PIPA won’t have a job tomorrow. In most western countries that means overturning the applecart and toss out the incumbent “traditional” large parties on their ear, even if that means abandoning the way your father and grandfather voted.

          We aren’t there quite yet.

        • None

I can only disagree… 1 law the suppressed the internet passed, what laws that opened it up passed?… none springs to mind… I feel sorry for you amaricans, especialy because obama vetoed ACTA trough… and with election comming up you have the chice between corrupt ‘nice guy’ and a corrupt evil guy :)

        • Lisasolea

CISPA isn’t a done deal yet , it only passes the house so far, it still has to be reconciled with whatever the Senate comes up with.

You are right, the sun suddenly started shining, creating a beautiful rainbow in the reflection of my window which caused a white dove to smack into the glass.

I have been reading up and this 478 to 39 vote with 165 abstaining makes for the largest legislative defeat in European Parliament history. Also this is the first time they have taken up their rights under the Lisbon treaty to reject an international trade agreement.

      Real history in the making.

  • Elasbett3

Yeah would be useful to know the name of those 39 , in order to keep them from election next time

This is just another “heart and mind” ad from a europe on brink of collapse.

I´m afraid this victory will be start of a new debate – how can the laws be changed to adapt to the reincarnation of ACTA in 2014….

    • blah

We’ve won a major battle, but we haven’t won the war. The fight continues…

  • Violated0

    Woo Hoo ACTA is DEAD.

You can kiss my fucking ass Chris Dodd! Pants down, bent over, and your lips on my brown eyed hero! Or just resign your MPAA CEO job and go home and cry in your mommy’s arms!

Lets see the score: SOPA Dead, PIPA Dead, ACTA Dead. All of 2.5 million citizens killed ACTA today. Ready to surrender yet? How many hundreds of millions on lobbying funds did you spend again?

Yes I do now call on everyone to demand Chris Dodd to resign. He has failed to do his job in all regards and has only pissed off millions of citizens and hundreds of technology companies.

Well we still have work to do to clean up this ACTA garbage in places like Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and more. We will certainly win this one though so only a question of how many citizens want to stand up now and to be able to say “I was there when ACTA fell”

My final point has to be that we can undo the damage done to copyright laws over decades, to end the monopolies, and to reform copyright into an open market, free trade and sharing and to reconnect media creators to their audience. The Copyright Cartels should be scared… very scared.

  • ndmushroom

Another good one, Rick. Two points, though:
    a. It’s not just De Gucht. Sevcovic’ remarks after the vote were the same (the Commission will go on with the ECJ procedure and then serve us the amended, if necessary, ACTA on a microwave-heated plate.
    b. You mention that the EP has outlawed all “three-strikes” schemes across Europe.  This kind of schemes still persists, however. France, Ireland, the UK…

    • Jimbo

i made a similar point in a previous post. the trouble is, that despite what the EU decides, member states dont have to comply. ridiculous situation and to me rather pointless being in the EU if you follow your own rules. as for France, one of the election issues for Hollande was Hadopi. still no change. the UK have just instigated it and Ireland has re-introduced it. what an absolute joke!! all measures are to the benefit of a failing industry that refuses to adapt and to the detriment of the people because they have and continue to do so!!

    • Violated0

      a. ACTA is a fixed international trade agreement that has already been signed and it now cannot be modified. They would have to ditch ACTA and put desired ACTA provisions into TPP-A.

      b. While the EU did indeed outlaw the three-strike schemes they did add the exception that this would not apply to the countries that already had such a scheme planned namely France and the UK. Ireland is an unusual exception when this was a private agreement between them and Eircom.

    • Guest

If i as a British citizen get notified of the three strike law by post or email i just have to appeal to the EU and they will force my government to strike the law down. What a waste of money and effort.

      • ndmushroom

The law won’t be struck down, I’m afraid. It’s just that the UK government will have to pay a fine (which, judging from the special status you guys enjoy in all things EU, might be a purely symbolic sum)

        • Alio

The way European judicial system works, if a national law is in violation of a European law, ultimately the Court of justice of the EU will strike it down, but you have to go through all the appeal procedures in your country first.

Considering the U.S. was the main driving force for ACTA it could not have died on a better day this shows America thinking it is the only independent country and has the right to bully others around is not going to be stood for.
July 4th european independance day when we finally told America no to ACTA.

    • Thank you, EU!

We weren’t the driving force, our government was. Most of the American citizens that understood what was going on opposed ACTA.

The 99% opposed while the special interests 1% pushed it. This is a great day for not only Europe and the rest of the world, but for every citizen of the United States.

I, for one, am proud to be a citizen of the United States and damn honored to have fully opposed ACTA and support the EU in it’s decision to stop it.

I believe in a free world.

      • Philip O’Connell

I never said anything about Americans I was referring to America as the country which like in all other countries is represented by the government if I was referring to the american people I would have said americans and not referred to the overall country which the government makes the rules for in most cases

        • :/

I’m sorry, but I did NOT vote to elect these officials nor did I ever grant them my consent to represent me.

      • Timo

yep, same lame excuse from every US person:

Please, it’s not us, it’s our lovely government..

If that’s the case, please do not call yourself a democracy anymore.
        Hint: go with fascism.

        • http://www.facebook.com/richiermelendez Reacher Melendez

A country can be blamed for its elected officials but not its political system. Not to get preachy, but for DECADES we have helped europe far more than we hurt it, and almost always, the u.s. throwing support (i’m talking the people) towards one side or the other, worldwide mind you, that side usually wins. We are hated because we have the best and biggest of most things, but is that our fault? I can tell you that no one I know feels superior as an american to any other country, in fact the pride he was talking about isn’t there as it once was. but when you have 300 million people your politicians usually get there way, and our politicians are awful, we are run by lobbyists, and the system will change.
It really sucks for this american that we are viewed the way you view us, even when we are on your side, when for the most part all we have ever impacted ur countries’ is to trade with to boost economy, give aide when needed, and help out in times of war and destruction. I’m curious if any of you have actually met americans or talked to american tourists of your country even. i would bet for the most part if you had you would have a pleasant view of who and how we are.

        • Timo

@facebook-1244176461:disqus  Look, I grow up learning English from the TV, mostly cartoons, and I do like USA(as a country), but I was talking about how they do thinks behind your back and then when you know or find out about it do mostly nothing. One major event that happen was the Occupy protests and that’s it.

As a side note to your questions; Yes, I did talked to american tourists and I have been friend to some that did they’re studies here.

Anyway, today WE both won something much needed.. freedom  and, as a plus we find out who the rats are in the PE.

        • guest

Um, hello…. We have not and could not possibly call ourselves a Democracy because that would be factually incorrect.  We are and have been since day 1, a REPRESENTATIVE REPUBLIC, which is a huge difference.  Democracy has very little to do with what takes place in this country day in and day out.

        • Sial

          @facebook-1244176461:disqus
I’m French, and even though I haven’t met a lot of US citizens (so far, I can barely remember meeting a single one actually), I totally understand and approve of your comment (though the part claiming that you got “the best and biggest of most things” is probably excessive by a bit ;-p ).

There’s prejudicing idiots everywhere, just don’t mind them (well, actually, trying to educate them would be a more rewarding effort, but it’s a brave and epic task).

        • Timo

@588b9cf5efaaecb2642b04a56ca80d7f:disqus  Calling me an idiot won’t make you any smarter

“Calling me an idiot won’t make you any smarter”

Then next time, try not to write down such stupid stereotyped generalisations.
Because you can only be judged on what you’re saying, if you act and speak like an idiot, you’ll be viewed as an idiot.
Next time, just ban any “they” from your sentence describing a whole country, especially when it’s home to 300 million individual people. Because the same simplistic logic could be applied to your own country or continent, and I’m sure you wouldn’t be glad to see yourself reduced to a cliché.

          Regards.

      • Guest

Ignorance.  Kill people for a view or belief you (and I in this case) disagree with.  Here’s a thought… educate yourself fully about any subject you care so passionately enough about that you feel everyone who disagrees with you should be killed, then form an intellectually persuasive argument and engage people to change their minds and in turn speak out.  Wait, that would be too much effort right?  Easier to just kill them all…

Everyone has just such an issue they care so passionately about that others disagree with, and with your logic (or lack thereof), everybody would be dead, including you.  The net never ceases to amaze me.

        • tt

the only news that would be more welcome by me today would be that i had won the Lottery! my sincere thanks to all that voted against the ACTA acceptance!
as Rik says, we must remain vigilante though. i hope that anyone trying to bring similar legislation to the masses remembers this day, what led up to it and what the outcome will be in the future. it is about time that all laws or whatever you want to call them that involve reducing, let alone removing, citizens rights are killed before they start, especially if there is to be no openness and transparency during negotiations. as for those that tried by a lot of ‘foul means’ to get this crap into law and have still refused to back away (de Gucht, Marielle Gallo, Christofer Fjellner for example), they should be sacked! no one would deny that business is important but to take business side when you have been elected to represent the people, is disgraceful! i hope the same defeat happens when TPP comes to the table but in the meantime, i hope that those responsible (eg, Ron Kirk) for the terms within it, take note and realise that the people have the final say on what should be allowed to affect them and in what way. after SOPA/PIPA/ACTA defeats, it must be clear to politicians, governments and businesses surely, that this shit has to stop and stop now!!

    • blah

A full win for ACTA opponents. However, we must not rest on this victory as there are new threats to freedom already on the horizon. Hopefully, the next goal will be to stop Data Retention in the EU.

Initially, this directive was passed to retain the communication of the entire European population for months with the intention to pursue dangerous criminals and terrorists. However, the European Court of Justice has already asserted that these highly sensible information can be used to prosecute filesharers. Several countries have already adopted this directive into national law, with a few exceptions including, thankfully, Germany, who are now facing trials and possibly fines of several million euros because of their hesitation.

I hope that European people will stand up against this deep intrusion of their privacy and human rights as they did with ACTA. If not, I foresee that tens of millions of European citizens will possibly have to pay legal fees of around a thousand euros per case. This is absolutely not what Europe needs in the light of the recession.

As a citizen of the United States, I want to send my very warm welcomes and greetings to my friends in Europe for opposing ACTA.

You have made my Independence day that much better today. Today I will drink in your honor, my European friends!

Congratulations. Great way to start this 4th of July day! I hope this outcome has ruined Chriss Dodds 4th of July.

  • Ishigidydigidy

Not just a victory, this was a LANDSLIDE victory.  The war is likely not over, but we, as a whole, have won a MASSIVE victory.  Every single person that signed a petition, wrote a pissed off letter, wrote a pissed off email, shared a petition on facebook, or did even did something as simple as offhandedly mention it to a coworker, thank you.  Without the help of everyone this never would have happened!  FUCK YEAH!

EDIT: Just realized that this happened on the 4th in the States! Woo! GO AMUURKAH! WE KILLED ACTA ON THE SAME DAY WE KILLED THE BRITISH EMPIRE! WOOO! FIREWORKS AND ARTERY CLOGGING BURGERS FOR EVERYONE!

  • blah

This brings a tear to my eye. I’m so proud. This is why the UK should stay in the EU.

    • blah

How do we get de Gucht sacked? That should be our next objective. He’s clearly against democratic principles and doesn’t deserve his position.

  • Thank you, EU!

    SOPA = Dead
    PIPA = Dead
    ACTA = Dead

Best fucking hat trick in the history of mankind.

Well i’ll be damned, that’s good news.
Now, how about we celebrate with a good old fashioned lynching ?
Someone grab De Gucht, i’ll grab Gallo, my neighbor will grab Fjellner and then we just need someone that’ll snatch up Sefcovic…
The rest of ‘em will run and hide like the rats they are.
(don’t take me too seriously, actually lynching these people is just bs, but boy what i wouldn’t give for a few minutes alone with each of these scummy corporate puppets.

“C’mon” Word not found in Word Web Pro dictionary. Could you clarify please. Did you mean: “Come on”? or possibly Cum on” as in, The thick white fluid containing spermatozoa that is ejaculated by the male genital tract? Example: Andy was shocked to see that he had mistakenly posited cum (jism) on his keyboard again. Jism, usage (vulgar) noun.

But is not a definitive victory. Remember, De Gucht has a backdoor, the  EU-Colombia/Peru FTA, a lesser version of ACTA.

I revealed before about article 254 from that treaty, that forces the monitoring of all media for private interests, under the pretext of piracy.

Now, charge against this and other backdoors that are coming.

  • teenygozer

Not a word, not a single word about this on American television or in any of the newspapers.  Lots of fluff about the best way to cook a hot dog or how to protect your kids from fireworks, but nothing about this.  Why?  Because the Big Six corporations that own our communications are also Big Content.

But they don’t own the internet, so that’s where we have to read this stuff.  When the day dawns that Big Anything owns the internet, we’ll really be screwed.

    • Guest

They aren’t going to show themselves up for loosing with allowing the media to mention this on the tv or newspapers lol

    • Violated0

I checked CNN and Fox News and zero word seen on this EU ACTA rejections.

I am not sure though if that is because they are taking a day off due to this public holiday (like TechDirt) or if such a journalist would get their butt fired. As they have mentioned other recent news then I suspect the second option.

    • DocGerbil100

I think there’s probably a large amount of truth in that.  It was the same with SOPA, as discussed in this Techdirt article.

The article also has an interesting second analysis which suggests that the internet is, in a sense, “not real”, both to the people responsible for running mainstream news services and to a majority of the people who use them (most of whom presumably make only limited use of the internet) – I think there’s probably some truth in that as well.

This is a baby step towards starting to scratch the surface of the tip of the iceberg.

If we are to truely stand up for our freedom, the next step is to fire the assholes who voted in favour of ACTA, and send a very strong message to the cowards who didnt vote at all. These beurocrats and corrupted corporate prostitutes needs to learn not to fuck with the internet.

You are kidding yourself if you think “we have won” some major battle. This is not progress toward to more freedom, its just a pause in the regress of our rights, and a small pause in the corporate special interests march.

All that has been won is a battle, amongst many that have been fought, amid countless that will inevitably be. All falling under the wing of the war for the people’s truest form of freedom.

However, for every triumph, little in the eye of the enemy as it may be, its ephemeral glory need be lived to its last breath, for of extra breath we run out with ease, when our breath we hold for too long and our hope we cease.

    Congratulations my friends!

“Today, on July 4, Europe celebrates a day of independence from American special interests.”

Great article and i am happy ACTA is dead, but really? As you mentioned in the beginning if it wasn’t for the american ppl shooting down SOPA and PIPA in such a grand fashion this would have passed.

Please dont confuse America’s Interests with the interests of our Entertainment Industry. We as a country and a people showed that we respect the inovation of the free and open interent over special interests of the entertainment industry.

Hopefully the entertainment industries around the world will realize we will not censor ourselves to protect their profits and they will have to come up with a business model that is conducive in the 21st century.

As for our world Governments, they can no longer hide behind trade and copyright to try and censor us. If they want to do it, it will have to be head on. We have shown around the world that this is not gonna fly.

On this 4th of July a day infamous for the re-birth of democracy, it couldn’t be a better day to remind governments who they serve, and that their power is limited by us.

Happy Birthday America! and Congrats to Europe thank you for standing up.

    • MattEisen

I think Rick has a valid point, ACTA was created by the US gov’t, and forced on Europe. Our rejection of ACTA is a reaction against US special interest groups such as RIAA.

  • cato

As an american, I am amazed how on our supposed day of independence  Europe has done something truly Democratic and America FAILS yet again to live up to its own standards. HAPPY UNACTA DAY ! AND THANK YOU EUROPE!!!

You mean, from the USA? Because America is from Patagonia to Alaska.

      • Canadian, not American

The people of the USA aren’t the only ones who consider “America” to mean the USA. I’m from Canada and I can tell you that most Canadians will be strongly displeased at being called Americans.
Also, I don’t recall ever hearing the term “America” to refer to the entirety of North and South America; “the Americas” would be the term I would use for that.

Well lets keep in mind that the European Parliament is the democratic arm of the European Union unlike the unelected European Commission.

Then let us also remember that it was the European Commission which played a noticeable part in the creation of ACTA. The EC then sneaked ACTA into Europe disguised as a “fish” and it was the EC which hosted the signing by the member countries.

Since the EP have long been accused of only rubber stamping the demands of the EC then they are as happy as we are that ACTA is dead. As the EP has just sent a big “fuck you” to the EC along with pointing out that such secret negotiations are unacceptable to the EP who now demand their place in discussions to represent the public interest.

I can say that now the EP much wishes to engage with us protesters to ensure that our opinions are well represented. This is not only of great benefit to us but this also boosts the power of the EP. Never in their short history have they seen such heated and passionate public protesters.

Maybe then our desires can be rammed into some new laws. My point in all this is to pick your fights carefully when we have a War to win and not just a few battles. ACTA today was smashed to pieces to a very high degree.

Hate to burst everyone’s bubble but aren’t the EC just going to implement it anyway, ignoring the EU vote.

    • Luke

the EC cannot just force a legislation through especially if it has been rejected by the eu i personally believe that if he continues to try to force it through the eu will make it illegal full stop. that is my own personal oppinion on it just purely down to the response and overwhelming odds at which this was rejected.

    • Violated0

      Nope.

To pass into EU law ACTA needed to pass two steps. The first step is to ensure that it is lawful and the second step is to pass the European Parliament vote.

The supporters of ACTA wanted to pass this trade agreement to the European Court of Justice to validate the lawful aspect. The EP today rejected this step and moved to go to the full vote.

As you can see the EP has now massively rejected ACTA. This makes the ECJ step pointless when it would still need the EP vote to pass. There is also no way the EC can ever believe they can turn around a 12 to 1 majority.

So ACTA is totally dead within the EU when it is now unlawful for any member country to ratify ACTA. All the EC can really do now is to bring back key ACTA parts in later years under a different name and that means merger with TPP.

Not to forget we need to watch out for IPRED and CISPA who present their own problems.

So basically this is one of those cases where the majority of the people against it are not doing so out of some strong resolve for conviction..a conviction rooted in deep principle or belief that knowledge is power and should not be distributed like a cheap market commodity.

No, in reality this is another (and unfortunately serious) situation where a bunch of free loaders want free stuff and are annoyed that they potentially could have lost the ability to get free stuff without further penalties or the threat of serious reprimand.

In short, this only works (using music as an example) because the digital era makes live performances more of a lucrative revenue than record sales.

It has nothing to do with the power of the people or the right to information bla bla.
If not for the digital era this issue would be squashed or wouldn’t have risen(hence why it wasn’t prevalent in the 80s and 90s)

The only people that benefit from this are the free loaders and the bands/companies who want free advertising at the cost of the assumption that people will like what they’re offering.

In North America, things have value. Having lived in Europe for about a decade, it’s easy to see that many things don’t have value, and people’s property rights is one of them.

    • BlurrTheTechnicolor

      you have no clue tbh
especially the comparison between north america and europe and their values couldnt be any further from the truth

you ever considered europeans have a totally different system of values?

and you living in europe doesnt say anything about you knowing any values we have here

one thing is for sure without a doubt european values are different compared to other places around the world and thats in my book is a pretty good thing

How is that possible? Please explain how we can be free loaders and yet  spend more money on buying entertainment than any other demographic.  Could it be that we actually did stand against ACTA because we have a strong resolve for conviction, a conviction rooted in deep principle or belief that knowledge is power and should not be distributed like a cheap market commodity? Could it be that you’re full of shit and lying about us being unprincipled free loaders?

Yes it could be, and so it infact is.

    Here’s an interesting Fact:

Of the 39 Votes ‘FOR’ this legislation – ALL voted AGAINST the wishes of their own party and their own country.

Of the 469 Votes AGAINST this legislation – ONLY 4 voted AGAINST the wishes of their own country.

So realistically, if the politicians actually represented their people, the vote would have been closer to:

     504 Against vs 4 For

I didn’t look into the Abstentations because they’re a bit more of a mixed bag.

  • http://7-books.net/ SleepyJohn

I am a bit concerned at the numbers who want to metaphorically ‘hang’ those MEPs who voted for ACTA. Surely the purpose of democracy is to enable folk to vote how they want, without fear of intimidation. How would we feel if the votes percentage was the other way round and the corporations set out on a vendetta against all those who voted against? We must not let ourselves be dragged down to their level.

“we need to make an example of the ones who are openly against the people”. Please, please, NO! Some may have been sincere and some may have been bought, but we must allow the democratic process to weed them out. If the constituents do not want these MEPs they can remove them at the next election. “Making an example of them” is the MAFIAA’s way of beating opponents into submission; it has no place amongst civilised people. And bear in mind that many of the ‘people’ undoubtedly did support ACTA, so probably the proportions were a reasonable reflection of the people’s wishes, and therefore should be respected.

The unelected Commission, of course, is different. It has no democratic legitimacy, so is not entitled to democratic protection. You can hang those arrogant bastards wherever you like.

Yes. That is why I used the word ‘metaphorically’ in the first sentence.

        • Guest

Then what the hell is your problem?

As Lordfury007 pointed out above, all of the MEPS who voted for ACTA did so against the will of their own people.

Those MEPs should be made examples of.

As Thomas Jefferson said, When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.

So let them fear the people.

        • http://twitter.com/epijason Jason Faulkner

Then what was the point of all the sentences that came after?

        • http://7-books.net/ SleepyJohn

For some reason I have no buttons to reply to the replies so I shall do so here:

1 – I see nothing metaphorical about “we need to make an example of the ones who are openly against the people” or “Those MEPs should be made examples of”. This is just aping the MAFIAA thugs; see the dictionary for “make an example of”. 39 MEPs voted for something you disagree with; get over it. That is democracy. Be happy that 715 didn’t.

2 – “the MEPS who voted for ACTA did so against the will of their own people” — There is no evidence of this; they have been noted as rebelling against their party’s line and their government’s stance, neither of which is “the will of their own people”. If they did “vote against the will of their own people” the latter will doubtless have something to say about that at the next election. That is democracy.

3 – I am sure Thomas Jefferson intended governments to fear the ballot box, not the witch hunt. And I suspect that, if someone hadn’t beaten him to it, he might have also said: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”. That is democracy.

4 – The right to vote for ACTA is just as important as the right to vote against it. That is democracy. Screaming for vengeance against those who don’t vote as you want them to is not. That is the stance of those determined to destroy democracy, and it saddens me to see it here, today of all days when we should be celebrating a considerable success for democracy.

      • http://akemi-mokoto.me/ Akemi Mokoto

        ok, 2 things.
        1) If I cared if a stranger hated my opinions or didn’t care for them, I’d never say my opinions. Yet 6 years later I still do it. Why? I. Don’t. Care.
        2) Nice way to go WAY off topic. Irrelevant banter sure makes you look good(on 4chan).

Ad hominem: The poor mans reply. WAIT, then again, that always seems to be the best thing you idiots can actually come up with. My plan was perfect but there was one thing I overlooked, one factor I failed to calculate, he’s a dumbass…and there’s no accounting for a dumbass. Carry on.

Our Gov’ knows that if something like this were passed in the states, people would riot here like they did in Egypt.  I just wish we would stand up on more issues, this is our country.  Not theirs.  If 100,000 people stood outside the white house protesting an issue and stood there for potentially weeks, things would get changed to our liking.

    • Anyone

it passed in the states, Obama bypassed congress to do so
      no protesting whatsoever

of course, now that the largest economy has bowed out and the third largest was never in it, it is a moot point, still, ACTA passed in the US and noone cared

      • Violated0

Obama may have signed ACTA but this treaty has not yet been ratified.

They of course delay when it requires 6 countries to come into effect, the question of if ACTA should pass through Congress, the trouble in the EU and elsewhere, then the USA could still break out in anti-ACTA flames,

So it is a very volatile situation and the Administration is just happy to sit back and to do nothing waiting to see what happens on the national and international fronts.

We can most hope that Congress wakes up and they stop the President trying to slip new laws past them. It has already been proved that ACTA has caused procedural errors but these elected pussies are not calling for the President’s head or at least to table ACTA for the vote. It makes you wonder who’s interests they serve but then the US was the major push behind ACTA in the first place.

    one word:
    socialism

gets everybody to work ( no slackers and no give outs )

gets a limit on how rich you can become on others work

democracy is only good when people have the same level of education and take active interest in laws – which  luckly it happened in this case.

    Hoist the Colours High.

    ———————————-

    Yo, ho, haul together,

    hoist the Colors high.

    Heave ho,

    thieves and beggars,

    never shall we die.

    The king and his men

stole the queen from her bed

and bound her in her Bones.

    The seas be ours

    and by the powers

    where we will well roam.

    Yo, ho, haul together,

    hoist the Colors high.

    Heave ho, thieves and beggars,

    never say we die.

    Some men have died

    and some are alive

and others sail on the sea

    – with the keys to the cage…

    and the Devil to pay

    we lay to Fiddler’s Green!

    The bell has been raised

    from it’s watery grave…

Do you hear it’s sepulchral tone?

We are a call to all,

    pay head the squall

and turn your sail toward home!

    Yo, ho, haul together,

    hoist the Colors high…

    Heave ho, thieves and beggars,

    never say we die

and now de Gucht and co from the EU Commission are putting the bits they want from ACTA into IPRED! will these bastards never give up? what the hell is the point of keep fighting over the same thing? why doesn’t the EU Parliament ban the instigation of any laws etc that will damage personal privacy, personal freedom or any other human rights? what hope is there of the people keeping up the same pressure continuously, when there are ass holes being paid to supposedly look after EU citizens rights but are doing the exact opposite and trying to implement changes that are detrimental to the people but of benefit to a few very powerful businesses only? the people have other things to do, like trying to earn a living. the job of these fuckers is to just screw the public. we are on a loser, i am sorry to say. it is only a matter of time before we lose everything to industry and become nothing more than slaves. welcome to near 1984!!

Democracy is a terrible form of government. Just because Democracy “got it right” this time, doesn’t mean Democracy is good (a broken clock is right twice a day).

Democracy is a system that always destroys itself, especially when the people realize they can vote themselves free stuff.

Just because a tyranny is approved of by the majority doesn’t make it right.
