AllOfMP3 Shut Down by Russian Government

Written by Ernesto on July 02, 2007

AllOfMp3, the popular online music store, has been shut down by the Russian government. Pressure from the United States, and a refusal to enter the World Trade Organisation (WTO) convinced the Kremlin to take the website down for good.

allofmp3Before the shutdown AllOfMP3 had nearly 6 million users who were able to download songs and albums for a fraction of the price from authorized alternatives such as the iTunes Store. MP3s were sold for $0.20 per song, or less.

AllOfMP3 has been a thorn in the side of the RIAA and the US government for years. Last year, U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab said that if Russia wants to join the WTO, they should shut down the pirate music website [AllOfMP3] that is robbing U.S. recording companies of sales.

In an interview with P2Pnet, the owners of AllOffMP3 later said that Schwab completely and deliberately mischaracterized AllofMP3, “it is irresponsible to use AllofMP3.com as a negotiating instrument in an attempt to extract concessions from Russia”, thay added. But now it seems like president Putin has some good news to tell Bush today, a mere coincidence of course.

It is not clear how effective the shutdown of AllOfMP3 will be. Most users will probably move to MP3sparks, a similar service with a similar setup, launched by the same company. This site is not illegal under Russian law because they use a different licensing model.

Last December the Danish ISP “Perspectiv” decided to block access to AllOfMP3 for all their users. In a response, The Pirate Bay, working together with the pro-piracy lobby Piratbyrån, decided to block all Perspektiv’s customers from accessing its site. Not long after that “Perspectiv” reconsidered their position, and their customers were allowed to access the online music store again.

My gut feeling says that these “grey market” MP3 sites are just another Hydra.

If you don't like torrents try MP3 Fiesta. They hold nearly 67,000 albums from nearly 17,000 artists. Prices are around the $0.10 mark for single tracks with full albums coming in at roughly $1.00. Tracks are available from 192kbps and they take major credit cards and PayPal

“Perspectiv” is actually a Swedish ISP. In Denmark most ISP’s if not all is blocking access to the site.

If you get like 200$/month, you don’t acctually *buy* stuff, even from allofmp3 right, if so, I’d really be impressed of how you bring it all up…
Well best wishes, and hope AllofMP3 and consorts dont die.

What a load of crap, what’s next Best Buy Music?

Cmon, As much as I completely understand and agree with what you are saying… the US Government doesn’t care about the poor people. In a statement made by one of the head CEO’s from the Music Groups states this “If they can’t afford it right away, let them listen to it on the radio or on tv, saving up to LEGALLY buy the album from a licensed dealer.”
Now … yes this does show us all something that we already knew “US Government is just as greedy as the rumors say and that they will divert to any cheap, underminding, trick they can use just to get what they want, even if it does cost the lives of others in one way or another. Personally, I understand why the Russian President did what he did, I can honistly see that if he didn’t shut down the site. The next war would start over that. Not to mention trades would go down causing a major upset in US made goods being traded. … the Americans won’t be able to get their expensive shoes anymore! lol
But if I remember correctly the US is in dept as it is, so if this side of the world just said “Fuck you Pay me bitches and then we can talk about shutting down sites and trading again” I think it would give us a chance to come up with a way to keep the RIAA and MPAA along with all the anti-piracy groups away from us with our own laws.

But hey this is just me jabbering on about things I wouldn’t mind seeing or reading about……

How is MP3Sparks licensing any different than AllOfMP3? Same user ID same password, same account history, same library, same tools, same balance, same terms as AllOfMP3. Can someone comment how the MP3Sparks site is any different except in name? I’m not challenging - I’m seriously asking…

If you had an account with AllOfMp3.com, you have one with MP3Sparks.com. Same login works, and your balance is carried over.

15 Jul 03, 2007 at 01:58 by Rob

Except MP3Sparks.com isn’t able to accept any type of payment, so is completely useless - just like allofmp3.com in it’s dying days

16 Jul 03, 2007 at 04:17 by merkwurdigliebe

FWIW, the usual payment method just worked for me.

17 Jul 03, 2007 at 05:12 by Takumi

I can’t get into MP3Sparks.com. I even went forgot password, got sent my username and password, and they didn’t work
