Simanavicius is just seeking for more free PR. Anybody can get Linkomanija's owners details from "donate" page in tracker. He phoned Linkomanija's owner few times, but he is not going to shut it down. So the only thing for Simanavicius left is to create an illusion he is working, make loud statements (for example, he is going to slap Linkomanija with 500000Lt fine (~150000€)). And yes, few years ago Simanavicius was working on the streets fighting real pirates which sold pirated CDs and had nothing to do with torrent community.

Speaking about piracy levels in Lithuania, almost everybody has some "pirated material" in their homes here, and everybody knows that you need to buy software only for use in companies (where computers can be checked anytime).

It's a made up story to turn people against p2p.

They do these things all the time.

And if you buy music CDs or movie DVDs you are financing this hate machine.

@94:
"if i invested my life saving in a bank i wouldn't want someone to be able to walk in and withdraw my savings."

If my money could be multiplied infinitely I wouldn't mind would you?

Even if someone got hold of my account but just copied the value available and leave it just as he found I wouldn't care at all.

Music in the digital age is in infinity supply it cost near nothing to duplicate it and so if market forces would apply it should cost pennies no?

Artists do get paid they have other products to sell like concert tickets, commercials, little toys, T-Shirts, public appearances that cost thousands or millions of dollars, bar gigs, party gigs and etc.

Just because you can't control the internet it doesn't mean that people are stealing, people are paying the promotion cost of the artist for free just like radio no? was this what you meant when you said "you already pay it's just it have no value"

The apparent free music it's not a loss if nothing it's a gain for the artist, the sharing it's the thing that opens up all other doors besides, what is the point in trying to sustain a model that is unfeasible and that cannot be sustained? people will stop using Tivo or recording songs from radios? Artists think that if they can't see it, it doesn't exist? people have to believe that artists are not getting paid when the record labels see some of the biggest profits of all times?

Sure if you say so then artists cannot get paid if people listen to music on the internet it's nothing like listening to radio and recording the songs on the MP3 directly from a radio LoL

Explain to me why I'm paying for them when I record a song from the radio that in the U.S. don't pay royalties and when I do the exact same thing on the internet I'm stealing?

Here in Lithuania a new CD by any famous US or otherwise act costs more than $20... we don't have best buy or other cheap record shops here, but we do have the weekend DVD/CD pirate markets.

And at $20 per CD, keep in mind that people here in Lithuania make significantly less than $1000 per month.

But the pirated discs here are actually great... no extra features, but we're getting movies right after they're screened for less than $10, and they're solid copies, not filmed in the theater. We get some releases before Wal Mart does, and much cheaper!

Maybe the guy should work for social justice or go give people who can afford the fines in other countries a hard time.

@89

Youre funny. Its called piracy for a reason, not because the people who do it wear eye patches, sport beards and hobble along with a peg leg. Filesharing copyrighted materials is illegal. As for copyright laws need to be changed, youre basically saying "i know im stealing and im having a hard time justifying it, if i pretend the law is unjust that will make my stealing ok". Protecting someones hard work and investment seems perfectly reasonable to me, if i invested my life saving in a bank i wouldnt want someone to be able to walk in and withdraw my savings.

Even as a pirate, I have to say I respect the guy. He isn't giving up, even though the odds are stacked against him big time. Trying to have him killed is way too extreme, though.

@75

Retard?

File sharing is not stealing...

Umm yeah you can just pick and choose what laws to break... I could go take a knife, and kill someone right now. I'm not going to, because its not right, at least that law is sensible. But notice, its not the law that would stop me...

Copyright laws, they seriously need a change. So these laws are definitely ones I shall be ignoring until something is done about them.

I would love to hear RIAA's view on Amazon's MP3 store. After all, MP3 files do not have copy-rigght protection and it is next impossible for RIAA to track, if you just get it from friends instead of downloading. (RIAA uses "borrowing from friends to make a copy" as an example in its argument against DVD backup software.).

Now, Amazon has an awesome MP3 store that is DRM-free with a large selection and often good prices. I am sure they have an agreement with the record lable companies, but it is a big contradictory in the logic comparing to what RIAA is saying about DVD backup software.

On a related note about Amazon, I recently came across, through PC World magazine, an interesting table that details the discounts on Amazon at
http://www.uberi.com

I imagine that's pretty useful for some people.

So all those people pirating by watching TV for freee and listening to radio are in fact thiefs right?

Why not put an system on all TVs and Radios that only let people see for what they pay?

It sounds reasonable?

"You complain that games, music and movies are too expensive. But if you couldnt afford a car you wouldnt steal it and pretend its ok.

And “i wouldnt have bought it anyway” doesnt really wash, I wouldnt but a pair of leather pants but i still wouldnt steal them.

Movies, games, music and programs are products, just because theyre not physical doesnt mean its ok to steal them."

You're an idiot. Or a troll. There is a HUGE difference between limited goods and unlimited goods. Comparing the 2 is for 5-year olds and industry lackeys.

a lot of you seem to miss the point, copyright theft is illegal, you cant just pick and choose the laws you break. How would you like it if someone walked into your house and just took your belongings?

72-->Going and killing the man will only land the entire torrent community in hot water and possibly have an influence on court rulings in regards to copyrigh infringement..

----------------

That a stupid statement... It's the same as saying that all the people who like football are murderers because at a given moment only one football lover killed to another person.

According to your stupid logic then all the football lovers are murderers for that.

Or it's the same as saying that all the homosexuals are murderers because only one disrupted gay killed to another person.

Your logic is AMAZING... STUPID!!!

Was it really necessary to use the word retarded? What's a retarded ass anyway? I'm giving you the
benefit of the doubt here but certainly you know that the word
retarded used as slang is extremely hurtful to people living with
special needs. Before I had a child with a disability, I pretty much was like you. I don't know if I used the word but I certainly didn't flinch when I heard it. What's the big deal, right? It is a huge deal to people who have cognitive challenges. They get what you are saying and they understand that you are mocking them, even if it's
unintentional.
Anyway, thank you for hearing me out.

Mercenaries make more money when there's a higher perceived danger. They also tend to work for the highest bidder who are not usually the nice guys.
There must be a lot of money in cracking down on children's choirs.

As some ppl already pointed out:
"Those ppl who are turning to violence for solutions are not acting behalf of the pirates, they are acting as individuals and pirates are no way supporting/wanting such actions"

I just hope that those ppl who are working for the mafia are smart enough to quit their jobs if things start to heat towards the violent level.

Well Lithuanias econemy has gone into reverse and accidently off a cliff in the last 18 months. Lets be honest, if they have a functioning internet+computer and money for the basic, why are they going to push for this?

At a time like this, the MPAA should look the other way as people _will_ remember that kind of thing when times are prosperous again...

Yea, some 16 year old sent the "threat", it doesn't really mean anything, though, as much as I like Linkomanija, I wouldn't kill people for it, nor would I pay somebody to do it.

As for paying for Windows... Well, I bought my laptop with Windows XP Home Edition, that same day I installed XP Pro, so yeah. Not to mention desktop computers that I have assembled myself for me and my friends. Usually only laptops come with Windows that you can't choose not to buy.

Also, the article mentioned BT, DC, but forgot FTP servers that are run by all of the big ISPs (and are usually available to the customers of that ISP).

I am against commercial pirates, though I used their services a lot some years ago when I didn't have a CDRW drive and then I rented the games from them when I bought the drive (4x4x24x, it was the best).

When I got a decent internet connection, I stopped renting from the pirates, since I could download whatever I wanted.

However, Linkomanija and torrent.lt are not commercial pirates. They are private trackers, that, like other trackers have rules that say "keep good ratio, donate or be banned". To register there you have to have an invitation from somebody who is a member already. Like I said - LM is like any other private tracker. What separates them from the other trackers is that usually those from Lithuania go there, and those who have fiber connections have 100mbps (up and down) to Lithuania, so you go to LM to downlaod something faster than you could if you used the services of ThePirateBay (I have aDSL 4mbps so I can saturate my connection even if downloading from abroad).

The point of p2p is to keep things *FREE*

May all the scum that earn money off pirating burn in hell forever. Amen ;-)
