I dont know about you but I havent seen any “indie filmmaker” films listed on those trackers I frequent.

Most of the films I see there are the thrice-cursed work-for-hire c-movies. Meaning the actors, script writer and the lot is hired on a low hourly wage or stipend by a newly created subcompany of a big filmmaking company. (Some of the more famous talent get a bit more but not much). This talent produce a product (or known as “work” in the legalese-doublespeak of copyright lawyers) get paid and sent off. Then the product is marketed and hyped to death. Depending on how well that worked it is either a mediocre success or complete flop.

Yet, to this day, I can still walk in to any flea market in any large city and purchase the illegal TRUE pirated DVD’s they act like cause it’s on the internet that it’s new. and why are they going after people that make no money off of what they do when black market companies make millions actually stealing and distributing the stuff. I don’t get it at all

2 months of high speed internet, 12 two liter bottles of pop, 30 packs of microwave buttered popcorn

Abd then the Supreme Court here in Canada rules that personal use was “not” copyright infringement …

Proves that the authorities with the thinnest of evidence immediatelly raids any filesharer but when a real offence occurs like blackmail by organizations with money then there is a sudden lack of evidence.

As for FTP access, it doesn’t matter how they got access, they still didn’t have permission from the owner so it was illegal.

Let me get my head around this; most everyone on this forum believes that it’s okay to download someone else’s work, not pay for it, not give a crap and laugh about it. Interesting. The Anti Piracy groups the use illegal methods are cut from the same cloth as you lot. Yeah, I’m sure you think this is funny, but here’s the deal. A small, struggling Indie filmmaker manages to shoot a film, after years of raising money and gets a small theatrical/video deal. They’re just making enough money off of the deal to pay back the investors and perhaps, if they’re really lucky, pay their rent while they start the hustle all over again. Meanwhile, the film become popular on a P2P site and now instead of people buying the DVD, allowing the struggling filmmaker to perhaps, just perhaps, shoot another film, that possibility is now gone and he/she is back to square one. No investors get repaid. You have the movie for free. The filmmaker is completely screwed. How the hell is that okay? You can argue all want about ‘free internet,’ but the bottom line is that you want something for nothing. Yeah, it’s a changing world and at my age I’m considered a dinosaur by most standards, but whilst it may be cool for you to download something for free, the far reaching repercussions are that you’ve completely screwed the people that made the film that you want to watch. Get it? You do this enough and at some point it will unprofitable to make films. Then what’re you gonna do? Bleat and whine that no one is making any good movies or movies period? I know that this post will probably not make one iota of difference to you, but hopefully some of you will at least think about it.
