I believe what put me off movie theaters was way back when I attended a showing of "Interview with a vampire".

In front of me, at the scene where Antonio Banderas character is drawing slow circles around Brad Pitt's and you honestly can't say whether Brad's character is about to get bitten, stabbed, or kissed, some fourteen year old girl two rows down starts hollering hysterically in shrill opposition to Banderas coming too close to her apparent on-screen crush.

What finally killed theaters for me? Fans unable to respect the fourth wall.

Anyone remember the bent Hadopi study that used carefully cherry-picked data to take the credit for music sales spikes caused by iPhone launches? Study-authors and corporate shills Adrian Adermon and Che-Yuan Liang do, because here they've released a new study that appears to do the same thing.

They even devote a paragraph to discussing the Hadopi study, in entirely uncritical and positive terms, with no apparent awareness that it's generally dismissed by any sane and unbiased person as a shameful-yet-shameless academic fraud, paid for by an industry desparate to con politicians into believing their snake-oil solutions will actually achieve a measurable, useful outcome.

As far as I can see, this new study gives as little information as possible about its data-set as it can get away with, saying only that it comes from local branches of the IFPI, an organisation which earns substantial rewards for anti-piracy campaigning - and consequently have no reason to tell the truth and every incentive to lie through their teeth.

(IIRC, the leakage of some of their internal documents a few years ago - documents which flatly contradicted many of their public statements at the time - suggests that those lies are systematic and ongoing.)

The methodology here doesn't seem unsound in itself, but it rests entirely on that very narrow ledge of IFPI credibility. Understanding the mathematical manipulation they've used is beyond me - I think I understand it, but I will leave it to others to interpret that data in a more robust and reliable manner than I could manage.

The tone of this new study is overwhelmingly in favour of more anti-piracy measures. Their is no real suggestion or hint that such measures might not work or might not justify the costs involved in implementing them. Anti-piracy wins! No matter what.

On the whole, I get no sense that this is anything other than another biased, academically-fraudulent study, by yet another pair of biased, academically-fraudulent "researchers".

Same old, same old. :/

i don't like theaters either. in the last 3 years, i've only been to the theater once, and that was an epic fail. for me, it's cuz i'm adult ADD -- i get restless after a while and find it impossible to sit and stare at a screen and not do anything else for long periods of time. since everyone nowadays is such a shithead about seeing a phone screen during a movie (even with sound turned off), i can't surf the web or do anything on my devise to shift my attention when i feel the need, can't whisper to a friend, can't get up and move around.... this is torture to me.

so, i've invested in a very nice HD 3D home theater system with kick-ass sound, as well as a slick computer workstation environment, so i can get a beautiful entertainment experience whether i'm at my desk or kicking it in the living room. and, i can do whatever i want whenever i want while i've got a movie or tv show rolling, and can pause as needed if i need to step away and do something else.

when titles i want come on sale, i buy the blu rays. in the meantime, i pirate whatever i want to enjoy media on demand at my convenience...
