It depends on what you define internet. If we do not get change in laws today, the “shutting down the internet” is very much a possibility. What I think you’d see is the government and industry get to the point that, in order to publish something online, you’d need approval, and any unapproved sites are just no accessible. They would say they didn’t shut down the internet, but the internet as a free and open network would become non-existent. DMCA, and Russia’s version of it, is very much a step in that direction. Plus with the Net Neutrality ruling in the US, things aren’t looking good in that regard.
