Anti-Piracy Lawyer Hails Biggest Pirate Movie Bust
Written by enigmax on August 28, 2009Henrik Pontén, lawyer for Sweden’s Anti-Piracy Bureau (Antipiratbyrån), is celebrating following the seizure of a server containing around 10,000 movies. He is describing the haul as the biggest ever in Sweden’s history, probably the largest in Europe, and set to disrupt supplies to The Pirate Bay.
This week a man from Sweden was arrested after police discovered a huge haul of pirate movies stored on a server in his basement.
After being held in custody for a day, the 33 year old from Västerås was later released on charges of copyright infringement. During his interrogation he said that he had no knowledge of the movies, instead believing the server to contain only games.
The police who carried out the raid were acting on a tip from Sweden’s Anti-Piracy Bureau (Antipiratbyrån) who said they believe the man could be part of a larger network, probably within the notorious ‘warez scene’, although at this stage no other arrests have been made. Antipiratbyrån also says the server has links to another investigation carried out in Norway.
Antipiratbyrån lawyer Henrik Pontén is now claiming that the server contained around 10,000 movies totaling some 88 terabytes – a huge amount to be contained on a single server.
“We regard the man as one of the leaders in the warez scene,” said Pontén, adding, “A number of respected release groups were able to connect to the server.”
Pontén is celebrating the seizure as the biggest ever in Sweden and “probably one of the largest in Europe.”
Antipiratbyrån feels that the haul will seriously disrupt material becoming available on The Pirate Bay. Similar claims have been made in the past but have proven hollow.
The copies of the movies on this server will all have been copied from other places, and they too will be copied and distributed via other means. They will appear via The Pirate Bay and other torrent sites in the unlikely event they haven’t already – and that’s guaranteed.

wow…88 terabytes^^
Well they still ain’t got me…. Im in the thousands with my collection without the TV shows, 360 games and PC game rips. But I have a secret weapon its called off-home backups and a small EMP rite next to my server.
But im on 10TB so I dunno what else he had. Tons of porn?
Doesn’t that mean some other guy could have the same files as him? If so there was no point arresting him
There is a point of interest to arrest them, because APB uses bad methods and they need media-attention to survive and spread fear to the “normal” internet users.
This guy is probably just one of 200, something, in Sweden.

Some advice for scene members, use a headset when on Skype with your friends. Not the mic of your PC nor the loudspeakers.
Pontén clearly doesn’t understand how torrent works. We get files from everyone in the swarm. Not from just one source.
be careful when using your mobile phone for scene speak and then running of to your friends. This is APB + Swedish police.
rofl
It’s the difference between Avatar and Beim Jodeln juckt die Lederhose that counts.
10,000 movies…… Does anybody know what percentage of total movies that might be???? 10%? 90%???
Antipiratbyrån are so quick to jump to conclusions. Its almost as if they actually think that the file sharing scene can be taken down.
Fact is that it has roots deep everywhere, and probably within their own offices as well.
If they think that shutting down one person will stop the flow, they can think again.
TPS has been sold off, and another 20 clones are created. This is the only way that we can fight this. We are stronger then them, they are just to naive to realize it.
This is sad.
Big Content: “We scooped a whole bucket full of water from the ocean instead of usual drops! We win.”
The Joker smiles: Yeah, but tell me, how big of a hole did you manage to make?
The ocean rolls on. All such moves are exactly like trying to use a bucket to make a hole in waters of of the ocean. Your boat will sink before you make a dent. Moronic.
Oh, and I’m directing this at #9. If you are APB and Swedish police, then I would like to ask exactly how much money you make out of this will go to the supposed “artists” and the people who are “apparently” losing money due to piracy.
Go on… be honest.
its not about naivity, its about desperately clinging on to their cash cow until they can find a way to maintain the same profit margins. i personally think we should all publish details of who we are and what we download to force them in to taking mass action on their customers, and see how there business model survives when they alienate us all. also it will cost them a fortune with no reward at the end. needs planning, and we should collect a years worth of data before sending it to them.
disrupt supplies to The Pirate Bay—
Who cares?… oh that’s right, NO ONE! TPB is dead.
Isn’t that the notorious Pirat Ponten?
He’s probably happy the police took out his competition.
It just goes to show the incrdible stupididty of such agencies that they actually believe That
“this haul will seriously disrupt material becoming available on The Pirate Bay”.
TPB gets “supplied” with nothing but .torrent files and descriptions.
The Antipiratbyrån obviously haven’t done much homework. Such noobness….
disrupt supplies to TPB…..have they read the news recently? time and time again they prove themselves to be morons!
I’m still waiting for a reply from #9, or are they too scared to admit the truth?
That’s right, because if the truth gets out, that means no more expensive cars and hookers for them anymore, right?
Such hypocrisy…
A desperate attempt to connect TPB and potential criminals in one sentence in the mainstream media. What has TPB to do with the scene? Nothing.
Here in the UK, i believe that there is a simple solution to reduce piracy. We have the state and license fee payer funded BBC whom already have an extensive Music library, and indirect subscriber base throught the license fee. If they were to open up these archives publicly, with an on demand service, free of charge (barr the license already paid by the majority of users)then many people would not need to download, the recoding industry would still make its money from the already in place digital streaming PRS contributions, and they could promote british artists, and provide a truly public service that benefits the people, the government, the artists, and the industry.
Pontén is full of shit as usual.
The sever DID NOT contain 88TB. The entire site ring was 88TB, and APB has busted ONE of the servers.
The server case was a Lian Li box with room for 30 HDDs maximum. And since the disks are probably of varying size I doubt the single server contained more than 10TB.
@ #24, how about this. You give the artist.. say… 5$ per record sold rather than the 5 cents that they are lucky to get already, remove DRM and copyright protection so that people dont have to pay to download a CD that they have already purchased just so that they can play it on their Ipod, get rid of this securom garbage that aint even compatible with all OS’s, and that is just a start.
Maybe then, I will consider not downloading stuff first to make sure it works, to make sure its quality, or to make a point that the way that we virtually have no rights when it comes to digital rights, it stinks.
It’s actually stupid. You see. They could have stopped some other means of distributions as sites that have the movie directly uploaded on a web server.
However, torrents are harder, because, well.. as explained on other comments, is harder to take down, because since it goes out, you have little time to none to take out the initial seed. After that, you can’t go against more than two persons seeding, that will cause the file to distribute faster and faster.
And politicans don’t seem to realise that.
“Antipiratbyrån feels that the haul will seriously disrupt material becoming available on The Pirate Bay.”
They must be kidding. They should read up wikipedian on “torrents”.
@me I believe he meant this is APB + Swedish police, meaning APB have the official support of the police force when it comes to investigating/spying/monitoring. He suggested we take care not to transmit possibly incriminating data over cellphones.
..besides the fact that seeding 10k movies from one server is just majorly inefficient use of the bittorrent protocol.
Come on APB pull the other one!
This is blantantly transparent fear mongering that is typical of TPTB and their puppet media.
Isn’t it Pirate Pontén?
Or did he manage to change it back already?
ahh in that case, cool. :)

If only someone could hack into their pc’s and find p2p and illegal torrents. Would make for great news.
@lverona
They know fine how torrents work, the stupididty you are detecting in the follwing statement:
“Antipiratbyrån feels that the haul will seriously disrupt material becoming available on The Pirate Bay.”
is designed to install fear in the technically-challenged masses who make up the vast majority of bittorrent users. The APB along with the Swedish government want the general public to believe that they are winning the war and that they are fully in control of the situation. This raid was perfectly timed to achieve this goal.
In APBs case…
Those 10th-k movies (thats 10000ish) they say he had might as well be 100 movies or 1000. APB is known to exaggerate their busts.
SNF – Stupidity Never Fails
Disrupt TPB? we are all the TPB, the TPB is just a website, we are what make it what it is.
10,000 movies? that’s next to nothing in the warez scene.
one person down, 10+ million to go? yeah right…
how would is distrupt TPB when 1. the bay is dead and 2. This was scene shit?
@31 Grim
Good question…
Does anyone know?
350 million filesharers world wide containing 1 billion movies possibly or more and they think they successfully impacted the flow with one bust ,, what a bunch a idiots!!
I hope all anti-pirates will burn in hell.
Just wait until our generation gets the power. All anti-pirates will be chased and sued for crimes against humanity to the very end of they miserable lifes!
correction:
containing billions of movies possibly ;P
excuse
88TB?! How can you even store that much? He got like 100 hard drives?
MY PRIVATE CONSPIRACY THEORY
Isn’t there a pattern one can discern about all these various kind of “servers” with “illegal content” stories which hit the news regularly since April 1? – These stories pop up in the news and then get completely forgotten – Is there a purpose behind these stories – a bigger plan to convince the public that there in fact exists a mafia like organisation which spread copyrighted files? – Why don’t we ever see follow ups about all these fantastic stories about one discovered server with huge illegal content after another and who can tell that it’s not the lobbyorganisations who’ve planted all these “servers” to be found and hit the news?
maybe he is a movie freak, and not some1 from “the scene”, I love movies, but 88 terabytes is pretty hard to reach
Say YAY to rapidshare
HOLLYWOOD IS BURNING
Oh let me guess:
Police stormed in, kitted out in the full anti-terrorist body armour….
Just in case he keeps weapons of mass destruction or Osama bin Laden in the basement together with the servers…
I mean EVERYONE KNOWS that there is a strong link between “piracy” and terrorism…
If there wasn’t for European kids filesharing there’d be peace on earth and the money would keep rolling in to copyright holders massive coffers…
We can also start counting down to the time when there is a triumphant announcement that there were kiddie-porn torrents on the seedbox…. (Someone uploaded an innocent film of his kids taking a summer dip… Again; clear link between peadophila and torrents!!!)
Well, people who share are simply on an axis of evil…. Either you are with us or you are with the terrorists…
——————–
(I can’t believe my country has sold out like this…)
ok, so 88TB = 44 2TB Drives, or 88 1TB Drives, or 176 500GB Drives.
i Have 2 6U Servers and 3 Extreme tower Cases and none come close to containing 88 Drive Bays,
the Extreme tower is a mash of 3 Full towers, just to give you an idea, custom built, and it only holds 35(36)if i don’t have an Optical.
And the 2TB just became available in the past 6 months, so its unlikely he had filled it that quickly.
so you tell me it’s 88 TB on 1 Server
88TB on ONE SERVER, yeah right!?!?!
there they go proving themselves retarded again.
and anyways, the top 100 on TPB seems to be ticking on as usual :) yeah, they really stopped file sharing…….losers!
Monkey (post 30) has got it right – 88TB on one computer very inefficient in terms of the way bittorrents work. My call? The guy was just an end-user – and a hit-and-run end-user at that.
Some maths don’t add up here. If its “warez scene” and each film is on average 800mb, then is that not closer to 8tb? 88tb would be over 100k movies. Even if they were all dvd rips @4gb ea. then that would be 22k movies. Maybe 10k bluray, but I cannot see that.
I honestly dont believe it, I really think this is all a stunt. 88 terabytes on 1 server? Do you know what kind of hardware and power and everything else is required to run and manage all that?
I highly doubt that was all in one dudes basement who doesnt know jack shit..
I really think this is fake. Probly paid this guy to take the fall because who gets out of jail with a simple citation or whatever he got with 88 f*ing terrabytes of data in his basement..
BULL.. F*CKING.. SHIT.
Lol! retarded Antipiratbyrån.
It was 1 of several sites in a sitering and the machine didnt have more than just a couple of TB.
yeah drop the 8 from your 88 you beaver eaters
you can get a 100TB single unit (8u) san for about $40k!
http://www.aberdeeninc.com/abcatg/8U-Nehalem-Linux-NAS.htm
assuming the server had 88TB and it was a drftpd slave they didn’t put a dent in the entire ftpd network
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DrFTPD
fucking retards, can’t even frame someone properly
do these idiots even know how piracy works? Yes, you win, that 1 server was the only source for pirate content on the entire internet
*clapping slowly
Well jokers, I forgot to post this up, sata drives, drive controllers, blah blah blah.
And that’s just for a desktop, if you are talking rack mounted servers, you can literally have an infinite amount of drive bays.
Seriously, go look at any rack mountable drive arrays and see how they are stackable.
Scary to see how uninformed you cats can be sometimes.
88TB is nothing compared to the whole net togheter. They’re trying to hit air.
Lol, APB always helps the police to bust the huuugest sites. Always a topsite, always the top of the food chain. I remember them saying years ago after a bust like this that the scene was stone dead.
The guy is just making noise so his employers will keep paying him.
“Antipiratbyrån feels that the haul will seriously disrupt material becoming available on The Pirate Bay.”
Geez, that is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
The MPAA and RIAA and the rest of these morons spend millions of dollars paying lawyers, hackers, and investigators to bust up bittorrent rings… Do they not think that all these movies are not out their being seeded already? These guys bust a group with 10,000 movies which are backed up onto a remote server somewhere anyway. [The Pirate bay is still up and running]… I call it the “Hole And Plug” theory. So they make a HOLE by busting this guy, and another guy moves up and PLUGS the hole… There are new movies and music being made everyday. It does not stop.
The only people winning here are the lawyers, investigators and the hackers that work for the MPAA/RIAA (see Media Defender & Media Sentry).
88TB is a freaking lot, i bet 99% of it was pr0n lol
If you ordered 88TB “with”, just imagine how much crack you would get.
RIAA loses its case against Yahoo’s Launch Media internet radio station provider
http://recordingindustryvspeople.blogspot.com/2009/08/riaa-loses-its-case-against-yahoos.html
maybe its a start :)
How to count like an anti-pirate professional:
1 TB = 1 000 GB
88 * 1000 = 88 000
88 000 / 8.54 = 10 304.45
FFS! T E N T H O U S A N D M O V I E S!!!
Earlier, when they busted another supposedly big time file sharer. They used 4.7 to divide the total number of TB storage.
The final number of (potential) movies can’t be higher than the amount of titles that exists in the biggest online store.
Also, the number they use to divide with (dvd storage capacity) change depending on who they report the “facts” to.
Nice, huh.
Why don’t they go after real criminals instead of wasting tax payer money on a harmless pastime.
BOYCOTT HOLLYWOOD
If you want to be in the warez/FXP/etc scenes, you need to cover your ass:
a) Hack servers to make them into dumpsites. (Pub FTPs are more easily detected, especially when idiots can find them easily and hosting your own FTP can be suicide!)
b) Use socks proxy chains or another decent anonymity technique for all related activities.
Anything less and you’re asking for trouble, seriously.
They should look up the definition of the word torrent before making such claims as making any kind of disruption to anyone.
tor·rent
1. A turbulent, swift-flowing stream.
2. A heavy downpour; a deluge.
3. A heavy, uncontrolled outpouring
I don’t believe he had 88 Terabytes on a server in his basement. The largest drive available at this moment is a WD 2TB. He would need approximately 44 Drives to store 88 terabytes. Next we would have a cooling problem. 88 hard drives would produce a decent amount of heat as would the servers – yes plural – in such a confined space. Secondly even if he was able to cool said basement the electricity fees would be astronomical unless he was stealing power from the grid. So I would have to call bullshit on the size of the raid.
Why, why doesn’t the scene folk encrypt their drives? :P
Congratulations, you arrested some guy with movies on a computer, I’m sure the world will be a safer place now, NOT! They are movies for gods sake, not crack cocaine, child trafficers, or murderers. Sheesh, the only reason he annouces BS like this is to justify his existance.
And I wonder who pays for all these raids etc.. Ah yes, the swedish taxpayer. You poor guys are funding these copyright cops so the big media doesn’t have to. How nice for them!
What’s to say it isn’t 88 1TB-Externals daisy-chained together?
Here’s 25 doing just that, for example.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z24/OscarWabbit/DSC00431.jpg
xln, there would appear to be only 18 there. sticking 88 usb drive on a server, i don’t thing would work terribly well, and data transfer speeds would be hardly worth having due t the amount of hubs required to connect them all on to the fsb.
@72 looks like 18 to me…
If they are self powered it would be possible to do. As with self powering units you could chain up to 127 USB devices. If they are not self powered you can have 4 units daisy chained. Again there would be the problem of heat. Those USB drives produce a lot of heat and do not have any cooling. If the drives were on and in use 24/7 they wouldn’t last very long.
Bus-powered hubs have a further limitation. Since each port has only a single unit of power, they can only connect downstream to a single device. You cannot connect them to another hub for expansion because that hub requires an additional 5 units. And not all devices can run off a single unit. A low-power device like a mouse will work, but a high power device can claim up to 5 units. High power USB devices will only work when plugged directly into a PC host or a self-powered hub that can supply 5 units to the port.
When you connect a device, the PC queries the device for its capabilities and requirements. So, for example, the PC knows that it is connected to a 4-port bus-powered hub which means that each port can only drive one unit. If you try to plug a high power device into that hub, Windows will throw up an error message and refuse to enable the device.
Bus-powered hubs are generally a bad idea because of these limitations and are intended mainly for mobile, not desktop use.
ohh…shit..
this is really funny, n1 guys :)
i just joined the pirate-party in germany :)
they somehow seem to think that the torrent index file seems to be the actual infridgement of there movie, so it wouldnt suprise me if it was links to 88TB’s of files, after all they seem to have a few screws lose up top trying to figuar out that
Something seems a bit fishy with the numbers.
That makes it roughly 9gb per movie on average.
Seems kind of unlikely unless he was storing blueray iso’s among a bunch of dual layer dvd iso’s.
If that is the case I would believe they caught a scene storage server but otherwise seems like some trumped up numbers.
If they were 700mb rips he could easily store a good 100,000+ movies in 88tb.
hahaa they are stupid cunts with no calculation skills.and average movie rip is about 700mb .they are so noobs.
thats great you took down ONE server meanwhile 20 more will appear in its place. dont try to stop us fatman!
bunch of retards they are,and they claim that was biggest server in eu.how the fuk they know that?and i bet they didnt calculate only movie files in server they calculate all files in harddrive :D :D that it will look better.
wow 88 terabytes is a huge amount, i think that he will be charged with a little more than usual. that possibly cant be the biggest server in the whole EU, can it?
#25 has the facts, stop guessing guys.
im guessing the scene groups aint stupid enough to put all their eggs in one basket. (or they would have all been caught years ago)
88 TB / 10k = 9GB (so most likely and exaggeration of the truth)
88 TB / 2TB = 44 HDD’s * £160 = £7000 (they the cheapest i could find quickly)
next they will be saying they will have lost billions of money that doesnt even exist because of this “server”
even if this was a big scene rack and the scene group was stupid enough to have all the eggs in one basket. there will always be another scene group with a slightly different rip of the same stuff. or someone else to rip it again.
when will they give up and realise they are outnumbered, outsmarted and outdated.
they should be greatful they have managed to swindle their customers and the artists out of so much money and move on or change with the rest of the world. the route they are taking will just result in lots of money wasted and a problem that can only get worse as they alienate more of their customers
<END_RANT
It’s all posturing. What the statement says and what actually happend are two diffrent things.
If this was a member of ”the scene” then its pretty lax security on his part.
And in 10 years everyone will have 10,000 movies on little tiny $1 storage devices in their pockets. I don’t think they realize the futility.
I know for myself where there is 600TB + on a server so no worrys :D
FFS When will people learn…
88TB is Nothing. 1.5TB are less than $95.00 each now.
Server 1 (30TB – $3389.00)
20 Bay Norco Case – Check $289.00
20 1.5 Samsung/Seagate – Check $1,900.00
1 SAS Controller – Check $400.00
1 24 Port SAS Expander – Check $300
1 MB/PS/CPU/RAM/Cables – Check $500.00
Server 2-50 (30TB@ – $2639.00)
20 Bay Norco Case – Check $289.00
20 1.5 Samsung/Seagate – Check $1,900.00
1 24 Port SAS Expander – Check $300
1 SAS External Cable – Check $50.00
Total of 1.5PB for $132,700.00
1500 Payers at E60/month = E90,000/month
Dual 10Gbe connections $60K/month
Do the math. You can’t stop us.
For every 5-20TB sites there, there are more than 50 >50TB sites. For every >50TB sites there are more than 10 > 1PB sites. And my site is small.
Peace out,
Chalisto
88TB /10000 = 9.0112 GB,Which format are the movies in?
700 MB movies surely wont fit the picture. Someone is lying.
Also to be noticed that studios might not have released 10000 movies in blueray worth keeping or even watching so someone is surely lying.
o shiet, 88 TB is mind boggling!!!
That’s a very isolated case, most people I know are at 3Tb or something, counting all kinds of media.
And it’s true it doesn’t matter if it was seized as the content must be spreaded already.
Supplier for TPB was the best joke of the week I’d guess lmao.. TPB has (or had b4 it ‘died’) 22 million potential suppliers (go to the store, buy a DVD and upload so your friends can see… voilà, you are a supplier lmao)
“Antipiratbyrån lawyer Henrik Pontén is now claiming that the server contained around 10,000 movies totaling some 88 terabytes – a huge amount to be contained on a single server.”
those numbers just don’t make sense… in this current day and age 88tb on a single home server would be insane/border lining impossible. I’m not buying it.
meh, I take back my previous statement… 88tb isn’t really a lot when it comes down to it.
I’d say the server was more likely one of the FTP sites than torrents but whatever it was for, it will not put the slightest dent in anything other than the server owners wallet.
How is it mind boggling to only be able to store about 30 1:1 copies of Blu-ray movies per TB?
It only takes 20 people with five TB disks in one ring to get a storage capacity of 100 TB. That’s less then $500 of extra storage capacity per head. And it’s what a common PC can handle, even running a MSBS system.
Imagine living in a country were at least a 10/10 connection has been the standard for ten years … for the, oh so high, flat rate price of as low as $15/month, no cap. Today you can actually get 100/100 for the same flat rate price, no cap.
So, it shouldn’t take a genius to figure out that a bunch of close friends can make fair use out of fair use, for a very affordable price. Neither should it take a genius to figure out that that fair use can be very fairly used against them. After all it only takes one person in a ring to screw everything up, and then every one gets blamed.
If they really had ten thousand movies on their system, it only matters if they were illegally obtained. Won’t have much propaganda value if they were all purchased then ripped, and shared amongst friends.
disrupt supplies?
lolwut XD
Daniel (comment 8), when it comes to distribution of pirated content, torrents are pretty much at the bottom of the food chain. If the guy they arrested really is part of the warez scene, then he and his server very likely have nothing to do with torrents. He was probably running one of the Top Sites used those in the release groups for posting their releases. From there, the content gets copied and redistributed through various channels before a few people finally post them to torrent sites.
it was an usnet server not torrent
lool… “During his interrogation he said that he had no knowledge of the movies, instead believing the server to contain only games.”
You have 10000 movies on your server, and your claim is “I didn’t know”?
xD
Seems most of you guys didn’t catch Fred’s comment (#25):
“The sever DID NOT contain 88TB. The entire site ring was 88TB, and APB has busted ONE of the servers.
The server case was a Lian Li box with room for 30 HDDs maximum. And since the disks are probably of varying size I doubt the single server contained more than 10TB.”
If he didn’t just make all of that up, it seems like he had some inside info.
Another thing:
The 10,000 movies were not supposed to fill the whole 88TB. According to an article on the Norwegian dagbladet.no, there’s also supposed to have been lots of music, games and books on the server. Here: http://www.dagbladet.no/2009/08/27/kultur/tekno/teknologi/the_pirate_bay/fildeling/7837456/
There is one very interesting thing with this “Bust.” There has been no mention of it in any mainstream media. Can’t find it on CNN, BBC, or even Aftenposten, one of the leading newspapers in Norway. One would expect it to at least be mentioned in Norway as it indirectly effects Norwegians according to Pontén.
Pontén is celebrating the seizure as the biggest ever in Sweden and “probably one of the largest in Europe.”
Sounds to me like an extremely over exaggerated story. I won’t even get into the technical aspect of such a “server”.
oh noes! Them has got our serva!
Filesharing is over!
+g+
So piracy will stop now? it was coming from this guys basement all along??
wow
Okay, I read the Dagbladet article which really doesn’t say anything more than what Nick said above. Still there is no mention in Aftenposten, CNET or any other news media.
I would like to refer everybody to the March seizure of ten servers with 65 TB of data. That was when they managed to get the servers that contained ALL of the files shared on TPB. The Tech Herald says it best in this article:
http://www.thetechherald.com/article.php/200911/3153/Swedish-Police-Recent-bust-the-source-of-all-The-Pirate-Bay-s-content
Mathematicly it is easy to demonstrate that you need to reduce the source of files by at list 98% to start reducing availibility.
The reason beeing that the growth of the number of copy of the file is exponential.
So basicaly one server go down with 10k movies will have no effect whatsoever not even close!
But the entertainment parasites can continue to masturbate themselves if they want to with this.
Any way even if they were to remove all the movies and audiotrack form the face of this planet it will still not make us buy anything from these corporate criminals.
And just to let them know: During the insurrection which is comming we will hang them first. This is a promise!
be careful when using your mobile phone for scene speak and then running of to your friends. This is APB + Swedish police.
Fuck the APB + swedish police!
Just an advice.
@102,
‘The 10,000 movies were not supposed to fill the whole 88TB. According to an article on the Norwegian dagbladet.no,’
Do you actually think people believe that? That’s just shy of the content that Netflix has to offer on a good month.
APB report one thing to mass-media, and another number to the judge, just like every other ponze scheme outfitts.
If you read the fine prints from those who actually report the fine prints, it’s all there.
I love the internet more than anything else in the world. Torrents rock!!!!!
So piracy will stop now? it was coming from this guys basement all along?? hehehe
“Antipiratbyrån feels that the haul will seriously disrupt material becoming available on The Pirate Bay”
I lol’d
Henrik here’s a dollar. Go buy yourself a fucking clue.
ZOMG! One seeder gone. I’m shitting my pants. NOT!
Still, 88T is an awful lot. Respect.
wow, will you idiots stop talking about a ’seeder’? this dude clearly wasn’t seeding shit, he was most likely running an http://ftp... do you even know how anti-p2p the scene is? lol.
Loud LoL.
lol..
“I didn’t shoot the sherrif.. I just shot the deputy.” Games are copyrighted too.. I still can’t get over what a casual attitude people in Europe have towards not paying for things.
As someone who pays for movies with money, I can only say that im thrilled to hear about this. Europe has long since been a sponsor of piracy and it’s great to see that they’re finally coming around and changing their attitude towards theft and freeloading.
Nice job, Pirate Pontén, you’ve fed your ego to obesity.
keep “celebrating” your huge victory…bitch
Woah!
neo styles is back!
(And under a different name, of course, in order to avoid the spam filter. Clever, clever!)
However, he still fails hard at acknowledging counterarguments that demolish him!
Why does this not surprise me? Oh, right- because neo actually has nothing intelligent whatsoever to contribute. Just blah, blah, freeloading, greedy, pirates, blah, blah.
I myself have 3000 movies and 7000 tv eps come get me

Daniel (comment 8), when it comes to distribution of pirated content, torrents are pretty much at the bottom of the food chain. If the guy they arrested really is part of the warez scene, then he and his server very likely have nothing to do with torrents. He was probably running one of the Top Sites used those in the release groups for posting their releases. From there, the content gets copied and redistributed through various channels before a few people finally post them to torrent sites.
actually, usenet is usually first, but with more using torrents, sometimes torrents are first, then usenet, then ftp/p2p . Lots of people operate their scene box then use the same seedbox to seed their files via torrent or dump their scene files strait to p2p.

Swede caught with 10,000 films in file sharing raid
This story was the first one. I guess not many people wanted to comment before it hit torrentfreak?
Poor guy. Maybe just more one movie addicted like me :)
The uploads to the tpb will continue anyway, they really believe that’s only one sending all that content, theres alot of freewares out there to rid a dvd fast and furious.
hahaha nooooobs.
88tbs?? yeah fucken right. on one server, doubtful. as for disrupting thepiratebay, who cares? no ones using it anymore, it goes down in like 2 days!
Henrik Pontén is a fucken JOKE.
isnt the government supposed to address the wants needs and activities of most of their citizens? so if most of the citizens download stuff “illegally” from the INTERNET shouldn’t it become legal since democracy means government of the people?
As usual the media have blown this totally out of proportion and got all the facts wrong. This is similar to the Sunnydale site ring raid earlier this year – http://torrentfreak.com/large-pirate-topsite-raided-in-sweden-090306/ – one guy running a drftpd slave for a large site. 88TB was the total site ring storage, _not_ just this one guys slave.
gee now i have mroe movies and tv eps AWFUL isnt it
too bad im in canada and all your capping and all your interferance mister american in our laws and govt STILL DIDNT PREVENT IT
HAHA SUCKERS
notorious ‘warez scene’ ROFL!!!
NOTORIOUS IS IN DA HOUUOOooOOSE!!!!
Most films that are put on torrent sites are ~700mb. 10,000 of those is only just over 6tb.
Further to my previous comment, it would average at just over 9GB per film. Not even high definition, feature length films are that large. Either he had more files or (more likely) they have exagerated and not realised we could work out ((88*2014)/10000) by ourselves.
1024… stupid keyboard..
This all story is going to end very very badly for all these corporate terrorists once enough people realize what kind of danger they pose for our democracies and our free societies.
Since they corrupted everything already citizen will have no choice.
@neostupid:
“didn’t shoot the sherrif.. I just shot the deputy.” Games are copyrighted too.. I still can’t get over what a casual attitude people in Europe have towards not paying for things.”
In Europe we don’t support corporate terrorists that’s all.
We don’t negotiate with them either.
We need to destroy few nasty corporations and since in business it is easier to destroy than to build we will succeed.
The situation will resume once all the corporate parasites are dead.
meanwhile live with this:
No Money for the corporate parasites!

The governments around the world are corrupt. That pretty much sums it up.
In celebration of Antipiratbyrån great justice i will now seed district 9, the hangover and ice age 3 on my work connection. Someting something fiber optix.
If you think having 88 Terabytes in 1 server is impossible your wrong. There are 48 bay 4u servers such as the Sun Thumper but it would need 2tb drives in it for a total of 96TB of unformatted capacity. Another possibility is the new Dell EqualLogic PS6500E which also holds 48 hard drive bays. For 100TB there is also a Chenbro 9u 50 Bay case but costs $3400 USD Empty.
88tb?? I only have 10tb and I’ve been a serial downloader since 1999!! What sort of shit must this guy have? He must have more or less every film that’s ever been made since the last 10 years.
Well, I’ve a meager 2.5 TB…. out of which I use 1TB for the stuff, and that has about 1800 files…..so LOL I dunno….. who’s daft??? The APB chaps, the press, the 33yr old or the courts….???
Antipiratbyrån lawyer Henrik Pontén is now claiming that the server contained around 10,000 movies totaling some 88 terabytes – a huge amount to be contained on a single server.
I quote…..
“We regard the man as one of the leaders in the warez scene,” said Pontén, adding, “A number of respected release groups were able to connect to the server.”
Pontén is celebrating the seizure as the biggest ever in Sweden and “probably one of the largest in Europe.”
Well, if a number of RESPECTED release groups connected to him….. you really ought to respect him and his privacy…..in the first place… ain’t it a free world????????
I wanna watch a movie…. my rental is closed cos of a rent hike on copyrights by the MPAA or what ever…. so I go borrow my friends dvd and watch it at home….. that ain’t a crime… it’s like asking someone for water when you’re thirsty…. give us a break guys….
Maybe…. justmaybe… a 0.01% of torrent users maybe MAYBE…. using their downloads for financial gains… no one else is making money on them…. it’s just a bunch of kids or grown ups…. lazing around in front of their comps…. looking to catch the late night movie… or an old classic which no rental around has heard off….
That’s all….. quit wasting time and taxpayers money and use it to bring peace…. not eradicate the means of bringing peace.
And believe me….. you can’t or you wouldn’t make a multi billion dollar movie if the returns weren’t that good for a second time…. if you were loosing that much money due to piracy…. I think it’s all a scam…. money talks and shit walks…. the poor stay poor and the richer get richer….. that’s what the American dream is all about I guess…
I think this is nothing but smoke and mirrors…a big display for the largely ignorant public who don’t question what the corporately controlled media tells them. This is nothing but propaganda…a little one act play. I bet the guy they arrested is nothing but a corporate stooge who will get a slap on a hand from the corporate controlled courts as he disappears into the woodworks while the corporations carry on with their BS
Ya! We got the big pirate serve on the internet now everyone will be unable to download movies. Go ahead and drink some more kool-aid The only affect this could have on thepirategay is if he was the only seed for a movie and no one else had it. I don’t d/l shit that only has one seed anyways.
What´s wrong with these guys? When will they finally grasp the idea that the world is BIGGER than just TPB and not everything is connected to it? That when take down the Scene (not that it would ever happen) there´ll still be non-sceners who share their stuff on TPB, and if they take down TPB then there´ll still be the Scene to rip&distribute movies (and those who´ll leak those movies to P2P, not to mention the pestky non-sceners who´ll simply change tracker once TPB completelly dissappear)?
Hiya Borderliner :)
There’s nothing wrong with “these guys” they are just fighting the only way they can. To them this is a propaganda war.
They need a ‘high profile’ takedown so that everyone believes they’re actually effective. In fact they need all the ‘Tenenbaum’s’,”Jammie whats her heads’ and ‘torrentspy’ PR type “victories” they can get. Preferably as public and financially bloody as possible.
That way they can scare the rest of us into line. They want to convince us that the walls are closing in.
Nothing could be further from the truth. In these troubled economic times torrenting is thriving.
I was at a party last night and the host expressed an interest in torrents. I had him set up and well on his way in twenty minutes. Now he’ll show his friends…
hey I’m at a BBQ right now. Guess what I’m showing my host.
Someone uploaded an innocent film of his kids taking a summer dip… Again; clear link between peadophila and torrents
Why would anyone upload a torrent of their kids? Considering that public torrent sites are not used for private files but to share illicit materials such as pirated movies and porn with hundreds of strangers, such a person would only be doing so if he considered the film of his kids swimming worthy of sharing with other pedophiles
ENCRYPT EVERYTHING. Little or no evidence means no case.
“since democracy means government of the people”
Perhaps originally, but it has been perverted to serve corporations. If the public good and the corporate good are different, guess which wins. Especially in USA democracy is totally ruined because the corporate America buys congressional representatives and senators.
