I think a lot of the problem is artist and record labels think they are entitled to huge profit margins and crazy amounts of money for singing songs and releasing them.. I like Radio head but Thom Yorke’s net worth is about $35 million, how much is enough Mr Rock Star? Can’t afford a new Rolls Royce or a kilo of cocaine? Independent artists who are actual artists are going to be the real winners, they get exposure, money, and like they said you get money by how often you get played, rather then getting money by playing the public, for fools..

Not sure how works the royalty thing, but someone is very naive if thinks it’s an easy job to be an artist and that it means you’ll have automatically money to fill a pool. Even if there was no piracy at all (or little as in the pre-Internet era) and/or was impossible due to physical reasons (ie: storage devices and/or ways to digitalize music being unable to exist)
