The BitTorrent Legend Returns: I Am aXXo
Written by Ernesto on March 09, 2008During November last year we reported that the popular DVD ripper aXXo had decided to take a break and stop releasing new material for a while. It now seems that he is back in business. A few hours ago aXXo uploaded his first movie in months. He chose “I Am Legend”.
Since November 11 2007, when the last official aXXo torrent was uploaded, it has been awfully quiet. Some people assumed that aXXo had got himself caught while others claimed he had an accident. After a while it became clear that he simply decided to take some time off.
An administrator on Darkside RG, the official home of aXXo explained at the time: “aXXo told us that he has decided to take a break, so you will not see new aXXo torrents anywhere for a while. Please show your support by keeping his torrents alive until he comes back, as always, he will post here first when he does.”
Now, after nearly four months of absence aXXo has returned, and uploaded his first .torrent on Darkside RG and other torrent sites. It’s the news that many BitTorrent users have been waiting for.
Marking his comeback with the movie “I Am Legend” could be seen as symbolic. Before aXXo decided to take a break, an estimated one million people downloaded his DVDrips every month. The search term aXXo was undoubtedly the most popular at many torrent sites. Although there are conflicting opinions in respect of the quality of his work, there can be no dispute that he was, and still is, very popular indeed.
While some see him in an almost religious light, others have been quick to take advantage of his popularity for nefarious purposes, or have used the aXXo brand to draw attention to their own releases, like KLAXXON did.
Even though some see him as a legend, aXXo certainly isn’t without his critics but whatever the position, his popularity is indisputable…..along with his modesty ;)

Ive got no problem with bittorrent, sharing is good.
I do appreciate the work that people put into ripping dvd’s and uploading them to bittorrent. Even if theyre just doing it for fun and not for the scene, its nice of them.
However, scene groups work hard, and are much more saught after than a casual bittorrent uploader by law enforcement, so when their hard work is ripped off by someone, who claims its theirs (IE - aXXo), that really pisses me off. These scene groups risk a fuckload to get good quality releases out. They go into cinemas and cam, they leak dvd screeners, they get pre release dvds.
Dont support aXXo the scumbag, support the real scene releases, or the people who rip their own movies.

I like aXXo. As said above in some post, his torrents stay alive much longer then any other movie-torrents. I don’t really care if he makes re-encodes.
If I want new movies, I download from private trackers, if I want a little older movies, I download aXXo’s releases where I can find them, and I don’t have to worry that there will be no seeders on them.
He takes negative comments as a baby and expects to change the whole website and its ideals because he cant stop CRYING when people are mean..

In the end of the day axxo’s torrents tend to stay alive longer and therefore get shared more about the torrent community. Isn’t that the whole idea of bit torrent and p2p? To share? For the people complaining about him, just don’t download his torrents, problem solved.

While I really am not into movies, I am a bit curios about the big negative attitude against aXXo.
If he was just renaming files I would understand the attitude, but he reencodes scene releases into 700MB files. That is good honest working, trying to fit as much quality as possible into a single CD.
A process of refinement, no different than what the scene releasers do when they convert a real physical DVD into a digital format.
If you prefer higher video quality at the expense of size, you should of course not download aXXo, but that is simply because in that case they aren’t targetted at you.
There is however obviously a lot of people who do want these smaller size rips. And XXo is providing a great service to those people by doing these reencodings.
If you want to complain, you should first find another releaser of 700MB rips that provides a better and more consistant user experience than aXXo does. And even after that, why not just promote that other person/group instead.
All the anti aXXo trolling reminds me a lot about dirty politics. Don’t come up with any solution or real concrete ideas, instead just attack and bad talk your opponent.
By the way, if scene releasers want their credits to remain after a reencode or even redistribution I recommend that they embed their credits directly into the movie. That is where it is most likely to be seen anyways.
And if someone where to reencode movies and specifically remove such credits, then I would understand the complaints. But there is a real difference between activly and passivly not giving credit.

Don’t know him, never met him, never talked to him and have no plans to do any of those. However, I do know of him, and that as a casual dl’er I find the service he provides to be very helpful. Other work that people are willing to do (especially for free) that makes it easier for me personally, well, it has a value to me and I appreciate it.

a lot of people have data-limits and bandwith-limitations. so they download a 2 700mb axxo-reencoded movies instead a 1.4GB scene-released movie… if the resolution isn’t that good, what the h*ll, they’ve just seen 2 movies. and if they want the movie with good resolution they just buy the dvd/blu-ray…

Honestly, who gives a rats ass about DVD rips? Anyone with the right programs and a video store near their home can make a fucking DVD rip. And while we’re on the top, fuck DVD rips. Give me the damn ISO so I can watch it how it was meant to be seen? I can go the the video store right down the street, get the latest DVD, use any combination of DVD Fab Platinum, DVD Dectrypter, and DVD Shrink, along with the latest version of Nero if need be, and I can make a full blown ISO to any size I want that anyone can play with all or limited features with either Daemon Tools of a DVD player after being burned with DVD Decrypter. And I’ll slap the name FlipWhipProd as my sig…

I see a lot of people saying that aXXo steals scene releases, that he simply re-encodes scene releases, etc. Where is the proof?
Ok, so his releases are somewhat lower quality, how do you know that he didn’t create his own rip from a DVD? Do scene groups add an invisible watermark to their releases so that they can tell when someone “steals” them? If the scene and aXXo both rip from the same source, they’re bound to end up with similar files (same length, etc).
Where’s the evidence that he isn’t creating his own DVD rips?

If you don’t like it you don’t have to download it. That is the great thing about the internet. Several sources with varying size and quality. Some prefer the smaller size over quality, while other wants the highest quality and don’t care about size. And some most of all likes consistency over everything else.
Btw, since several people are bringing it up. Copying still isn’t stealing. Also, claiming that aXXo isn’t doing anything is wrong. He reencodes to a smaller size, probably checks the quality of the encode and releases it under his brand name that has gained people’s trust for its consistency.
If sceners want to get credits they should really embed them into the movie itself. Relying on nfo files, that almost no ordinary user every looks at and file names that change all the time isn’t a good strategy. And if the scene rules don’t allow embedding, bad for them.
If someone activly goes in and erases an added credit, then I would understand the complaints, but that seems to be more what real businesses do when they commit copyright infringement.
axxo is good sort of. granted his rips are 1 CD but at least he releases many movies that ‘the scene’ can’t seem to get. ‘the scene’ does NOT release EVERYTHING so its good that another is there to pick up the rest.

One of the reasons aXXo is so popular is because his format is consistent and he gets most (95%) of the new releases out. Other guys do a great job also. But you have to jump 3 or 4 different sources to get all the movies you want. And I have NEVER has ANY audio or video sync problems from a true aXXo rip. Most people are not downing sceners, but aXXo’s system works and is reliable. A Ferrari may be nice but not if you can’t get the damn thing out of the garage.

He downloads scene DVD-Rs and reencodes them. He somehow releases DVDRips just as R5s show up online, releases from different countries, etc. He does not rip his own DVDs, at least not consistently.
Anyone, ANYONE who disagrees with this can go verify some dates on other torrent sites. I’m not going to lie, I download his releases from time to time… quick and easy, but so are FXG releases as well as releases from many, many others. To idolize one guy who does the same damn thing as dozens, if not hundreds of others, is illogical.
i will never download another axxo release. i downloaded a copy of his version of accepted and got pegged by nbc/universal for downloading it. i had to have a meeting with my university about it. not good. i have a feeling all of his stuff is tagged by the studios.

I don’t really care where he gets his files from. His releases make searching for content easier. You just have to enter one easy short name, and you get a lot of content, all with a lot of seeders, all saved as files that work every time.
The only legit criticism I’ve heard is his files are too compressed. This I agree with. There’s no reason to fit to CD anymore.

I have never downloaded any torrents from aXXo. Therefore I can make no statements on the validity of his work whether for bad or good.
What is more of the crucible here is the apparent fracturing of the file sharing community and the use of the words “steal” and “stealing”. I would assume that the likes of the RIAA/MPAA love the semantics. Am I to understand that we are not sharing with our global friends? To implicate anyone is “stealing” is to undermine the whole credibility of P2P itself. And not to mention how ridiculous that charge sounds.
If indeed aXXo is re-encoding scene releases then maybe a credit to the scene or sceners are in order. But that remains to be known until it can be verified that is what he is truly doing.

Who are the morons who think 8 Gb movies are good? I’ve watched a 500 Mb cam on TV and it was perfect.
Give an ounce of consideration to the 80-90% of Internet users who don’t have super speed transfers, cumquats!
At the low end of broadband it takes at least 7 hrs to download 700 Mb. Even THAT’S hardly even worth it. Let alone 8 Gb! All movies should be encoded at 350 mb or less in XviD. Perfect quality. Even dialup users can get them eventually.
If they must be re-encoded to achieve that, then these people are doing a great service. Like Cherron did with Star Trek when he re-encoded the 350 Mb episodes to 170. Fantastic! Quality still there, and turned 8 Gb seasons into 4, allowing more people to download in half the time.
I like how he gets his movies down to 700mb, because it doesn’t eat up too much bandwidth. =D

The problem is that he takes the re-encode, and gives himself credit for it. Plenty of people leak content from the scene, but they leave the files in their original state. While I dislike the scene just as much as they dislike p2p, I respect them. Any of you who download aXXo rips should respect the scene just as well, because if it weren’t for the scene, your “BitTorrent legend” wouldn’t exist.

With axxo’s return, consider who will profit and who will lose.
It could be positioned that axxo’s releases will make more money for the movie industry. Hear me out. The axxo releases are traditionally small file sizes and of mediocre quality. Rather than spending eons downloading 8GB 720p releases, some users may want to just grab a quickie 700mb version, watch it, trash it, and purchase the film if it’s of good enough quality. Axxo could be seen as a try-before-you-buy option. There is some potential for him and his ilk to get some kind of business venture fashioned out of this.
On the other side of the aisle are the profiteering succubus vermin that hold on to private tracker invites and exclusive release information like it’s worth more than gold. They sell and trade this information, and the it clearly seems that sceners turn a blind eye to these activities.
Full respect goes to the scene releasers and all the years of dedication they’ve put into their craft. Sadly for them, public tracking, easier access to higher bandwidths, and more users like axxo are opening their tidy, elite enterprise up to the masses.
The future of bittorrent relies on the masses, and while there are a few die harders out there that still see things the old way, honestly, they need to get their heads out of their asses. Axxo ain’t no messiah, but if the cards are played right this whole thing could take off in a very profitable direction for him and his kind.
