aXXo Temporarily Stops Releasing DVDrips
Written by Ernesto on November 28, 2007The popular DVD ripper aXXo is a BitTorrent cult figure, despised by some, worshiped by others. An estimated one million people download aXXo’s rips every month and his name is among the most searched keywords on all BitTorrent sites. Not surprisingly, rumors start to spread when there is no official aXXo release for a while.
The last official aXXo torrent was uploaded November 11, after that is has been awfully quiet. So what happened, did he get caught, is he tired of releasing DVDrips, did he have an accident? It turns out that aXXo is not gone for good, he just decided to take a break.
ADL 242, an administrator on Darkside RG, the official home of aXXo explains: “aXXo told us that he has decided to take a break, so you will not see new aXXo torrents anywhere for a while. Please show your support by keeping his torrents alive until he comes back, as always, he will post here first when he does.”
This is not the first time that aXXo has taken some time off. Last year aXXo temporarily stopped uploading movies because a website named axxotorrents.com was trying to profit from his name. A few weeks after that the site went down and aXXo continued releasing DVDrips.
Earlier this month aXXo caused a stir when he deleted all his torrents from The Pirate Bay website. Apparently aXXo wasn’t very happy with the way The Pirate Bay handled his complaints, and decided to not release his torrents there anymore.
Unfortunately, aXXo’s popularity has downsides too. We’ve seen that anti-piracy organizations use his name to trap people into downloading fake files, and malware peddlers use the aXXo brand to spread their infested software.
At this point is is not clear how long aXXo will be inactive, his fans can only pray, and hope the he will return soon.

aXXo is just well known for his consistency. He isn’t better or worse than other Sceners, he’s just well known. Kind of a celebrity, while others, still good, haven’t got as much prime time in the eyes of the average downloader.

If you have ever downloaded an aXXo rip, which i am sure you have, then you can’t possibly say that he has VHS(!!! not WHS !!!) quality rips. Be serious, making false statements doesn’t earn you good points.

I hope that’s true, but the only reason I think TPB appears to have huge balls of steel is because they believe they are immune from legal action thanks to the laws in their country. My money says if this wasn’t the case they wouldn’t seem as bad ass as they do now, and probably would’ve called it quits ages ago.
It’s not that sites like Demonoid and others that give into threats are pussies, it’s just that their circumstances are different.
axxo has done wonders for the P2P community, unlike some.

It’s common knowledge that aXXo just re-encodes scene releases (mostly DVDRs and to a lesser extent, XVIDs).
No big deal that he’s gone, but for fucks sake - torrentfreak and the rest of the fanboys - STOP CALLING HIM A DVD RIPPER. Ripping implies that you are working from an original source - not just using downloaded DVDRs/XVIDs and claiming them as your own.
The opening paragraph of this article should be changed to look something like this:

It’s always interesting to see just how divided people are on aXXo… some love him for all his releases, some despise him for his “stealing” from The Almighty Scene. I haven’t seen this “proof” myself, but that’s not to say it’s not out there.
I myself appreciate aXXo’s work, whether or not he’s the one who does all of it. Yes, the Scene does have the potential for higher-quality releases, thanks to their larger sizes. BUT. Fact is, it’s hard to easily track down a certain movie’s scene release, if one exists. At least on torrents, that is. I’m pretty confident that the average bittorrent-only user likes aXXo a hell of a lot more than the average Scene member, and not just because of his “thefts”; in the Scene, it’s easy to find other Scene stuff, ’cause that’s its source. Sometimes it filters down to bittorrent (usually), but it doesn’t always get where it “needs to be” for BT users.
AFAIK, there is no one uploader who deals in solely scene releases, at least not in the numbers that aXXo does. Sites like isohunt have a bunch of copies of a given movie, but there’s no easy, fast way to tell if a release labeled as Scene or aXXo is, in fact, a Scene or aXXo release. With aXXo, you’ve got dependable, reliable sources to find his releases.

Exactly, I wish demonoid was still here…but I have a feeling, soon maybe or maybe TPB will absorb them too, which they’d be, indeed, the largest BT tracker.

I capitalized that solely to highlight the fact that many Scene members feel that way about it. I am not of the opinion that the Scene is “almighty” or anything like that.
