Biohazard Bassist Blasts BitTorrent
Written by enigmax on April 20, 2008The bassist and vocalist of the band Biohazard says that people who ’steal’ media by downloading it are “scumbags” and you better know that if he catches you doing it, he will happily “kick the shit out of you”. But the real problem, he says, are BitTorrent sites.
You get the impression that Biohazard frontman-turned-pornstar Evan Seinfeld isn’t going to be releasing any music for free on file-sharing networks in the near future.
In an interview with Metal Edge, the heavily tattooed self-confessed “sexual deviant pervert” doesn’t pull any punches with his views on file-sharing and doesn’t mind threatening file-sharers with physical violence. All in a day’s work for a rock star.
When it was put to Evan that part of his disillusionment with the music industry might be down to downloading, he said:
Downloading free music is stealing. There’s no other way about it. The same people who don’t have the balls to walk into a record store, take things off the shelf, and put it in their pocket because they are afraid that that are going to get busted think nothing about going on line and downloading a band’s music. That’s the way the band makes a living. If you like that band, you shouldn’t download their music for free because it can make the band go out of business. I know it’s not very rock and roll to say that; all the kids are going ‘fuck Metallica, we are going to steal their music.’ OK, how about if the guys from Metallica will go into your father’s hardware store and steal a hammer off the shelf.
Well Evan, file-sharing is generally a civil issue but stealing a hammer is criminal so, ask any file-sharer, Metallica should go to jail, obviously.
So how does the availability of free porn on the Internet affect Evan’s adult movie business?
Well, it cuts into our revenues. We spend a lot of time and money on attorneys and policing the Internet. We employ special technology to make it harder. You will never get rid of theft completely, but we have to do everything we can to prevent it. There should be some honor amongst people. Do people wake up in the morning, look into the mirror, and say, “I steal other people shit all day”? If so, you should know that you are a scumbag, and if I catch you I will kick the shit out of you.
I think most people are aware that porn stars “employ special technology to make it harder” but Evan, please be advised that “kicking the shit” out of people is a criminal offense (even more serious than Metallica’s blatant hammer theft), and punishable by imprisonment. Much more serious than file-sharing.
While actively trying to combat P2P, Evan notes that due to the way it operates, BitTorrent is more legally challenging.
We send out a lot of legal notices and have sued people. But usually by the time we send the letter they have already taken the stuff down. The real problem is these P2P bit torrent sites because the host of the site says they aren’t legally responsible, even though they really are.
Finally, Evan gives us an insight into why he believes people file-share, and suggests that it’s actually ok to “steal” stuff - as long as you do it to someone who can afford it……said the 4 million record selling musician with a $30m porn empire.
….I think the nature of people is that they want to get something over on someone, see what they can get for free. Personally, as a creative guy, [I feel that] it’s wrong. If you are going to steal from someone, steal programs from Microsoft ‘cause they can afford it, but don’t steal from creative artists who make movies and music and TV programs for your enjoyment because you become part of the problem. You’re a shoplifter. I know it’s very heavy metal to get shit for free. That’s why there are no more hardcore bands out there anymore. They are all out of business. Are you happy you killed it?
To be fair, it’s not quite dead. Biohazard will have a reunion tour this summer and everyone will be heartened to know that according to Evan, they will only be taking on the “highest paying” work.

When I read this article I just couldn’t believe it! Imagine that? The internet being the demise, of all record company profits, and solely responsible for bankrupting all metal bands!
Let me just say that when the major record companies were stacking up the greenbacks, long before the internet went ballistic, tons of metal bands were going bankrupt then too! Bands get dropped for not selling records. That has always been the case. But PLEASE!! Don’t blame everything wrong with the music business on BitTorrent use, because it just ain’t so, Bub.
Sure, BitTorrent use cuts into sales- that’s a fact. But a band that would have sold 1 million copies 20 years ago will still sell 700,000 or 800,000 today. Yes, that sucks, but sales are always sales, and shit bands are always shit bands.
All you major labels, if you run your companies like the Moguls of the past, Like David Geffen and Clive Davis, you would stand behind act that you loved and believed in for 2, 3, or more albums, until they took. But the current companies drop bands on their first album the very second they slip behind ‘expectations’. Look at Speedwagon! They were millions in debt to their label, but look what happened when they caught on! The old Moguls ‘invested’ in their acts, and as long as they had 15% to 20% total corporate annual growth, they were fine with that.
Today, the big 4 push all their cash into their big acts. Yes, that makes them more money for the same dollar than with the smaller acts. But that depletes development, and you get stuck, like now, with fewer acts accepted by buyers. That is economic reality through the history of the entertainment business.
So, Evan, stop your bitching and make better records. Yah, you’ll make a bit less, but that reality (the resetting of pricing models) is something you are just going to have to accept.

I had the band in my Bar (Soho London) on more than one occasion in the early 90’s (around the time they played Donnington Monsters of Rock).
A few of them decided it was OK to reach over & steal btls of booze from the bar on the way out “because they were ‘hardcore’..”
(At least that was Bobby’s excuse at the time…

I’m a musician, and I have friends who have recently been dropped by major labels due to revenue loss from mp3 piracy. Trust me, in most cases the artist sees VERY LITTLE of the record sale money, but that’s what they live on, after the record label gets their cut.

No it’s not. In most cases, artists live off of what they make from the road. Maybe the most case for platinum selling talentless pretty face pop-stars is that they live off of record sales, but when you’re a platinum selling artists… it doesn’t really matter.
I, however, do know many touring bands signed to labels, and am in one myself. We all make way more money going out on tour, making money from guarantees or riders, and off of merch sales than we do from record sales. Maybe internet piracy is taking back from record sales, but the turn around on people who are showing up at the door, paying to get in, and buying a shirt at the end of the night because they heard about us, downloaded our record(s), loved the album and became instant fans is going has resulted in much more success than if it were otherwise regulated.
I can attest to this because I’ve become a fan of bands from downloading their records from torrent trackers, I’ll pay to go see them when they play in my area, buy merch, and typically even offer them a place to sleep and shower if they need it for the night.
You’re right artists see very little record sale money, but that’s not news, dipshit.
I can’t get behind people who still try to legitimize paying $15 for a CD that costs $1 to make in at least a 1,000 pc bulk, when the artists get $0.80 a CD.

Lol ! I actually downloaded maybe 5 or 6 songs from this band, I’d read their music was similar to my taste;
I have a fairly wide range of musical taste, and I look for lyrical excellence as well as musical excellence; this being reality, I’m frequently forced to compromise on this, and I’ve pretty much come to accept that.
I deleted all of their music because it sounded like crap. There was one song, Domination/Revolution that actually had pretty damn good lyrics, but … the music sounded like crap. It wasn’t even music. So, although it was a fight, I ended up deleting it; I figured, hey: ultimately I downloaded this SOUND because I’m looking for good music, and this isn’t good music; these are good LYRICS, but I can just copy/paste THAT poetic stuff!

Dude, I hate to break it to you, but someone has to: your friends were not dropped due to piracy, they were dropped because their labels are greedy and stupid.
They’re labels try to fuck over the band and fuck over the customer at the same time; both tell them to piss off, but they are GIVING money to the band, GETTING money from the customer; who wins? You guessed it, the customer. The label stops paying the band and takes a small hit, but gets the opportunity to keep trying to enslave the MUCH larger money-maker, customers in general.
Honestly, if your friends were with good labels, they would get a much bigger cut of album sales, the fans would see a much lower album cost, there would be way more exposure and coolness-on-the-road, and everyboy - band, fans/customers[just realized how sick that is, w/e:)], and label - would all walk away with what they wanted at the end of the day.
But that’s not how it works. Labels are c***s. We all tell them to piss off. And they’d rather gouge us in general, than any specific band, because that’s where the money is.
No offense. I’m frustrated at the labels/record-companies/distributors, not you or your musician-friends.
