BitRoll BitTorrent Client Installs Malware

Written by Smaran on December 07, 2006

Watch out for a new Windows BitTorrent client called BitRoll. Users are reporting that it installs malware on their PCs and creates pop-up ads whenever they open their browsers.

BitRoll LogoWhen you visit the BitRoll site (better left unlinked), after a few seconds, it automatically redirects you to the download page. The download page is filled with fake positive remarks about the client. It also claims that BitRoll has been “rated as the most popular BitTorrent client.” Clicking anywhere on the download page will cause BitRoll to be downloaded to your computer.

Firefox is not affected by the pop-up ads, but a user on the mininova forums has confirmed that Internet Explorer is.

Most people who have downloaded and installed BitRoll have done so to get a password for a RAR file in a torrent they have downloaded. These torrents are fakes. The text file that these torrents contain instructs users to download and install BitRoll in order to unlock the RARs. A bootleg copy of Casino Royal is one of many such fake torrents.

The malware bundled with BitRoll is a sponsor program called “Cidhelp”. Apparently, it can be easily removed from the Windows Control Panel. As long as your anti-spyware or anti-virus program has not damaged any of its files, it will be removed when you uninstall it. The same goes for BitRoll.

There are posts on the mininova and Slyck forums about BitRoll, warning people to stay away from the site and not to download the client.

The grammatical errors on the site tell us that BitRoll isn’t developed in the United States or any other English speaking country. :-)

The purpose of BitRoll is giving users a great BitTorrent client that is extremely simple, easy to use and get started with. We prefer less features that actually works and a great user interface.

We believe that everyone should be able to use the torrent technology without having to be computer experts!

Happy rolling!

I found this page while trying to research this stupid program so I can get rid of it all the way. I have tried getting rid of it several times now.
If you downloaded bitroll at all, even if you havent used it, you better start working to get it off your system. It hides itself, wont show up in the processes list, downloads ton of stuff very sly so you dont even know when its happening. I have removed it (or at least what I can find) many times but there is something I am missing because it always re-downloads itself and sets up new crap. It is very tricky, whoever wrote it needs to be punished severely.
So I am guessing that this thing is like a weed, if you dont kill the root then it keeps coming back. I just wish I knew what the root was. I finally just disabled IE altogether and just use my firefox until I can kill this jerk program…

Damn shame! I actually believe that the targetpoint people are behind this program (don’t ask me how I just know). Anyways damned be the ones who advertise this program. I can’t believe snarf-it decided to get a piece of that cake, especially since they started a war last year against meganova for having usenext ads (which is spyware free). It’s a total shame that they use their name to misinform people just to make a quick buck.

Pfft. Your average American teenager knows what grammar is? This is a joke, right?

What a shame the state of torrent client development has come to. Several bad clients have been released in the past couple months that I would rather leave unnamed, but spyware is the worst. What’s worse is these sites advertising it.

Don’t be thrown by this if you’re new to torrents. The good torrent communities in general remain strong as they ban these clients. So, get a client we recommend(not this one, no private community would recommend this) and enjoy sharing with your mates. Torrents are still worthwhile despite this explosion of bad clients.
