@47 it’s a 1bn LOSS, meaning they are talking about $10 DVDs, not $1000 per infringement fine. I doubt Russia generates that much revenue.. It’s even more ridiculous if you check MAFIAA’s yearly income……

As it was said here ad nauseam, I doubt that if file sharing stopped right now MAFIAA would see expressive increases in their income. If you don’t buy after sharing you wouldn’t buy it without sharing. Heh.

I’m not sure if this has been posted before, but this link is an excellent example of what the artists go through with the record labels and how bad they are screwed. This is the type of thing that these “Anti-Piracy” idiots aren’t aware of. This link is of a speech that Courtney Love gave a number of years ago about the disgusting practices of the recording industry. It’s an important and great read.

You don’t mention that the authorities claim the site founders actually profited from it by charging users to pay a small fee in order to get a torrent file (making money from unauthorised distribution seems to make it illegal in the eyes of the law, though according to the new russian legislation even showing a film on a dvd you legally owe to a friend which is not in your family circle is absolutely illegal as well, fortunately the police doesn’t care for it so far :)
