This guy sucks as a speaker. With 6 months experience no wonder twitter has infrastructure issues.

The question is how many code releases are they doing a day? How long do the code installs take? How do they install/throttle the updated code being deployed so it doesn’t take down a huge part of the infrastructure? While bittorrent is great to distribute files, I highly doubt code install process actually happens as fast over thousands of servers.

Ok, let me put it this way. Git is a version control system, mostly developed with distributed software development in mind. It’s a tool to *build* something, but not usually to *run* it. Now git is fast, but it has other very important qualities, like preserving a history, that make it a baaaad choice for something like Twitter.

But okay, this isn’t really news, we knew twitter devs sucked before.

75 times faster?
I think it says more about the quality of the people at Twitter – incompetent people (i am talking about their developer team) having made a system 75 times slower than torrent which have been around for a long time and already proven technology.

You write:

40 minutes are 2400 seconds

The image shows 900 seconds (15minutes) down to 12, matching the factor of 75.

So either it’s a misquote or a misrepresentation. Please check your facts.

Also it may seem a lot but in the lifetime of a server a 40min setup period isn’t that much and I doubt an admin would sit aroung 15minutes doing nothing than waiting for git to finish downloading… YIKES!

Nevertheless a great use for great technology!
