BitTorrent Most Popular in Australia
Written by Ernesto on February 20, 2007A web traffic analysis shows that BitTorrent is popular among Australians, more popular than in every other country in the world. Australia is followed by Romania and Greece, the US ranks 12th
This top 10 is based on the relative Alexa rank these countries have on the 5 most visited BitTorrent sites: mininova, torrentspy, the pirate bay, isohunt and torrentz.

It is remarkable to see that there are some clear differences in the origin of the visitors among BitTorrent sites. Mininova is the most popular BitTorrent site in Australia, Torrentspy in Canada, and perhaps less surprising, The Pirate Bay rules Sweden.
The numbers below show how popular these sites are. 59 for Australia means that mininova ranks 59th in the list of most visited sites in Australia.
Mininova
59. Australia
78. Romania
78. Greece
81. France
92. Netherlands
Torrentspy

84. United Arab Emirates
The Pirate Bay

Note: Alexa’s data gathering is quite dubious. The exact figures may be not be completely accurate, but it is a great tool (especially the traffic rank) to compare sites within the same niche and to get a global impression of traffic shifts over time.

the fact that the u.s. doesn’t even rank in the listings in your second set of data gives me serious doubts about the conclusions. i’m certain that bit torrent is incredibly popular almost everywhere in the usa.
Agree with one, although, there’s always a way to skew statistics. For example, this can be popularity based on population, or it could just be that most Americans are bumbling idiots who don’t use bittorrent… I mean I don’t know anyone that uses it that I haven’t introduced it to.
Well I think that alot more of swe’s are using p2p then americans :P Cause like everyone got a cell phone and a computer, and some an mp3player. And all are always filled with illegal music ^^
hahaha dats right
AUSTRALIA represent !!!
all bow to your master lolz
What else do you expect when TV shows air 6 months behind the US here.
Romania catchin’ up! :D
It’s probably because we (myself from the UK) get the TV shows off the US, as it’s shown on their TV, so why do they need to download it, they can just watch it?
lol yeah… i live in Australia and i use mostly Mininova and Demonoid… im surprised America aint on the list… i guess they get their DVD rips off their friends for like $5… hehehehe
Alexa only works on computers that users do not run programs like Spybot on.
Chances are if you are in the US and smart enough to know how to use torrents, then you’ve probably removed alexa.
In those other countries, it is probably more widespread among new comers that don’t know much about computers.
You may not know this but alexa doesn’t send an email to these sites asking for visitor logs.
These statistics are quite skewed. Alexa collects it’s stats with spyware included in windows XP. The tech-savvy group of users either don’t use windows XP, or are intelligent enough to use antispyware and firewalls to prevent stats reporting. Not to mention, it only counts IE hits, no Firefox, no Netscape.
How incredibly rude, are you calling australia an incompetent nation of computer users.
As an australian who regularly uses bittorent sites i find this rude and blatantly inflated by the usual American Ego.
Australia as a country is one of the most developed technologically in the western world, and we suffer less then america when it comes to widespread computer glitches and remeber the internet is global so it gets to us aswell. Why you may ask because australians know and understand how to protect there computers from various things including alexa.
