BitTorrent Sites Show Explosive Growth
Written by Ernesto on March 22, 2008BitTorrent’s popularity is growing every day. Despite efforts from anti-piracy outfits such as the MPAA and IFPI, torrent sites continue to grow traffic wise, and there is no sign that this trend will be brought to a halt anytime soon.
We decided to compile a list of the 25 most popular BitTorrent sites, and see how their (relative) popularity has grown over the past three months. Out of the 25 sites in the list, 21 improved their ranking in Alexa’s list of most popular sites on the Internet.
There are a few changes in the top 10 compared to the list of 2007’s top torrent sites. Mininova is still leading the bunch, but The Pirate Bay is now in second place, in front of isoHunt. Torrentportal and TorrentReactor traded places as well, the sites are now 7th and 9th respectively.
YouTorrent is the only newcomer, and it’s really impressive that the site made it into the top 25 only 2 months after its launch.

Note: Alexa’s data gathering is not perfect. The exact figures may be not be completely accurate, but it is a great tool (especially the traffic rank) to compare sites within the same niche and to get a global impression of traffic shifts over time.

“but that’s not what they would have you believe”-Seinfeld

This article states: “BitTorrent’s popularity is growing every day. Despite efforts from anti-piracy outfits…”
I refuse to agree with the word despite. i would prefer the word because, so that the statement should read as “BitTorrent’s popularity is growing every day. Beacuse of efforts from anti-piracy outfits..” Today, I’m passionate about torrents mainly because of this victimisation and copyright blah-blah and lawsuits. I actually have taught to my friends just because of this passion.
Whats this the top 25 torrent sites for n00bs, LAMO.
Who in the right mind uses these sites for new releases, are you all crazy?
You cant beat private sites if BT is your thing, The pre-times are seconds and minutes and the speeds are allot better, but this soley depends on the private tracker you are a member of ofcourse.
torrentleech.org is one of the best private trackers available as it excells in all fields and has a amazing ammount of seeders.
Public trackers are good for rare xvids and tv series etc but are just not safe for new releases and are not regulated like private sites.
Dont get me wrong when i started on BT public was my first place but then soon stumbled upon private trackers about 4 years ago and havnt looked back :D
I suspect that ThePirateBay’s going up not just because of the media attention, but their new improvement to their search. It used to be worthless, now it’s actually pretty good. If only they’d support categorized viewing of torrents AFTER you’ve hit search as well, and they’d move higher
Fast.
Media defender was bad. Long live Torrents.
#18 - Second that. IE And Toolbars.. blää.. aka. eww
This makes me question whether companies will still be making software in the future….

Aren’t you special, you can use a private tracker! Hooray for you! I hope that post raised your ego as much as you hoped it would. Coz I really now think a lot more of you. Can I get your phone number? I want to meet you so i can kiss your elite arse and buy you shit. Seriously, next time your in Adelaide, send me an email at iwantADzskids@hotmail.com. I’ll show you how much i love you…
Personally, I dont need the newest thing as soon as it comes out, or even before in some cases, I’m quite happy to wait a week or two.
Private trackers ftw.
ThePirateBay is going to pass Mininova because of their media attention.
Disagreed; Mininova has way better site layout. However, the pirate bay, while not the best torrent site, is the best leader on the planet in torrent legalization, recognition, and arguably technology. PBFTW!
“Alexa’s data gathering is not perfect.”
That’s a nice circumlocution for: “They only count the visits of people who use IE and have downloaded the Alexa toolbar”. I’m not sure if i wanted those people visiting my Bittorrent site, if i had one.
True; IE users form the conformists, technologically ignorant, and corporate goons of the browser market; However!
They do contain some trace of the rest of us; I mean, they are not TOTALLY separate, to some extent we have similar interests;
so if the number of IE users goes from 1/20 to 1/15 using Torrents, that probably means a much bigger jump in the much bigger non-IE crowd. They aren’t equal-proportional, but they may well be directly proportional (at least in this regard).
BitTorrent sites are getting more and more popular, and there are a lot of good developers all over the world (thanks esp. to Germany + America), there will always be casualties in an ideological conflict like this, but P2P is actually doing really really well.
For you Americans though, you are running into serious trouble politically; your three candidates (Obama, McCain, Clinton) all hold platforms too-close-for-comfort, and that includes on violating net neutrality.
If I were you, I’d play on the safe side; go with Ron Paul; he is still in the presidential race and will not drop out until either the people have made the decision THEMSELVES on voting day, or he gets assassinated. He’s the only one I’d trust for torrents, p2p, and internet issues in general.
[FYI - If you haven't heard about him, check him out; his talk at Google headquarters is on YouTube and well worth the watch!]

hey now, if you think private trackers are the way to go… GET US ALL INVITES KTHXBAI
I personally like the simplicity of thepiratebay over the cluttered bullshit of some other torrent sites. I’m just saying that when I load thepiratebay, I know what to expect but some of these other torrent sites have ads all over the place and it’s hard to navigate. That’s why I go to piratebay nearly everyday.
Wow, just think how well Demonoid.com would be doing if Deimos hadn’t packed it in.
Pirating? No. It’s “sharing”, like my mother always told me to do. Sharing has been going on since the days of LPs, yet the Beatles somehow managed to scrape together a living. Despite their crying poor U2 are the world’s biggest earning pop band last year.

My my arnt you the sarcastic one.
I wasnt trying to be egotistical, I was just stating FACTS! and stand by everything i said!
Basically..
New releases = FTP,NG,Private BT
Old releases or rare stuff = Public BT
Most public sites are where newbies start off, and file sharers like limewire etc are where complete newbies start off.
Not been offensive or anything JUST STATING FACTS!
A top 25 Private sites would be allot more useful then this top 25 public.
And where does legaltorrents rank on that list ?
I just had a look at their front page and these are the seed/peer stats for their “top torrents”:
5 / 0
4 / 0
3 / 0
121 / 9
205 / 52
Not very high methinks.
Kind of a disconnect going on here for someone who spends so much time attributing the popularity of BT to anything and everything but its use for obtaining commercial products for free.

Ah, Firefox fanboys. Complaining becuase some website only tallies the most widely used web browser in their statistics, which are gleaned from some crappy toolbar that most of them are so fucking paranoid, would use anyway. And a good proportion of which wouldnt know a security vunerability of it kicked them in the back of the head repeatedly. Most of which are such fanboys, they refuse to accept the plain and simple fact that THEIR browser is just as fucked up as they one they all love to hate, That THEIR browser has holes that have not been fixed for over 4 years. That the only reason THEIR browser is so great is because THEY are too fucking stupid to figure out how the otherone works, so as is the way with such small minded individuals, all jump on the FUD bandwagon. Sad sad losers.
Legit Torrents has also show massive growth!

Lol I do try. I just couldn’t care less what you say. Whats it matter wether I get it today or tomorrow? I’m still getting it free.
Tell me, when you start downloading your movie the second it comes out, do you watch it the second it finishes downloading?
fuck meta search engines. any websites that don’t actually host .torrent files should not be considered torrent websites. it just makes a joke out of whatever legitimacy the torrent community might have…
seriously who fucking needs torrentz.com or youtorrent.com? just find a reliable torrent site…
