BitTorrent Zeitgeist: What People Searched for in 2012

Each and every day hundreds of millions of people scour their favorite BitTorrent search engines for content to download. But what are all these people looking for? Today we present the BitTorrent Zeitgeist 2012, a list of the 50 most searched for phrases and keywords on one of the most-used public BitTorrent indexes during the past year.

During December, all self-respecting search engines produce an overview of the most popular search terms of the past year.

These lists give insight into people’s interests over the preceding 12 months. On Google, for example, in 2012 “What is SOPA” was the most asked question typed into Google in both the U.S. and Australia.

But what about BitTorrent? With billions of searches every year it’s worth taking a look at the most-entered keywords on the dominant file-sharing network.

Unfortunately there is no central database of searches available, but Kat.ph, one of the top 3 torrent sites in terms of visitors, was kind enough to share the most popular search terms of 2012 with us. This list is based on millions of searches and gives an indication of what people were looking for on BitTorrent during the last 12 months.

Topping the lists this year is the TV-show The Walking Dead, followed by the more general keywords 2012 and French. The latter two are used to find recent content and French language releases respectively.

The top 10 further contains six movie related searches including Ted, Taken 2, The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. Besides movie titles the top 50 also contains other video related searches such as DVDrip, 720p, 3D and Movies.

Traditionally, TV-shows are much sought after on BitTorrent as well, and it’s no different this year. After The Walking Dead, Homeland is the most popular TV-related search phrase in 12th place, followed by Game of Thrones and Sons of Anarchy further down the list.

Besides movies and TV-shows the list is completed with a few unavoidable adult related searches, and the relatively rare software and game related keywords such as Windows 8, PSP and Android.

Perhaps most surprising of all, music isn’t all that popular on public BitTorrent indexes, as we find no music related terms in the top 50 at all.

Ita, a term used to find Italian content, dropped from first place last year to 31st this year. This is not really surprising as Italian ISPs were ordered to block access to the site in May.

Below is the full list of the 50 most-entered search phrases on Kat.ph. This list will be different on other public BitTorrent sites, but we assume that the top searches will be popular on other indexes as well.

I bet those who were searching for Windows 7 were people who tried Windows 8 and hated it.

Windows XP is still the best and most practical, customizable, light, accessible modern operating system for regular users.

        Ever heard of GNU/Linux?

Windows is full of backdoors and quite crappy…

        • Gui

          for fuck’s sack…its Linux….just LINUX…NOT GNU/LINUX…..NOT GNU…NOT GNU OS…just simple LINUX….

well…I am talking about the kernel….the rest of the packages….well they are not parts of the linux that we know….linux is just a kernel…that’s it…

        • Stallman’s Seal of Approval

          @ Gui

‘GNU/Linux is a term promoted by the Free Software Foundation (FSF), its founder Richard Stallman, and its supporters, for operating systems that include GNU software and the Linux kernel. The FSF argues for the term GNU/Linux because GNU was a longstanding project to develop a free operating system, of which they say the kernel was the last missing piece.

        • Gui

          @ Stallman’s Seal of Approval

Hell… I know who Richard Stallman is….and Linus Torvalds doesn’t need his stupid “SEEL” of approval…he created linux….completely from scratch….and now this stallman guy wants to take credit for someone else’s hard work….that won’t do…and besides you can’t call it opensource when you use third party multimedia codecs and proprietary nvidia/redon drivers along with it…and anyone who uses linux knows how hard it is to work with buggy opensource nouveau driver….so FSF definition is just plain bull shit…

Linux is free…use it if you want…but if you want to dictate how things should be like what you say and not the way users find it comfortable…than make your own OS(along with your own driver codes if you can) from scratch and leave us alone….This is partly the reason I prefer FreeBSD with BSD license instead of shitty GPL license

XP also has the most security holes and exploits in the entire Windows family line.

      • MadAsASnake

Windows XP is the worst peice of bloatware MS ever put out, though I hear Win 8 might be about to outdo it. I used Win 2000 until the limited internationalisation made it unworkable. It’s light, fast and stable. WinXP needed SP1 just to avoid monthly reinstalls and is only “fast” on hardware that is lightyears ahead of that avilable in 2001.

Just because no music terms came up, doesn’t mean music isn’t popular on public trackers. Most people won’t need to search for mp3, considering that most torrents are mp3. FLAC isn’t popular enough to warrant the top 50 searches. Music isn’t as big worldwide as big films and TV, so I’d say that it’s not really conspicuous in its absence.

    • TRACK

Those ones that are still hearing MP3s… deserve to be deaf and dead.
It’s funny when some of them say: MP3s are better than lossless formats,
which are just a waste of hard disk space.

BTW, there are many terms that probably are not in this list,
because people searched for those files in organized sites.
These things, which are in the list, always appear on KAT and TPB,
fans from different entertainment are more organized
and upload their files through torrents, filelockers and others,
creating mirrors, so people just download the files in the method they prefer.

      • MadAsASnake

I still prefer vinyl. It is a pity that the music industry didn’t bother creating and promoting a real high-fidelity standard (DVD-A was stillborn, everything else is pretty proprietary) that digital is capable of. No CD is NOT high fidelity. MP3 and AAC is fine for phones and iPods but it’s really crap…

    • chris p bacon

      What.cd no other needed really

Looks like a list teens to early 20s would download.

    • icec0ld

Considering typical demographics of downloaders and sharers, do you find this surprising? XD

    • Sense

I would say more under 30s. This is the generation that grew with the internet at home.

      • tonyj123

Unfortunately for most in the U.S. still living at home.

        • Pax

The trauma of desperately wanting to leave their home when they have 12, or is it 18?
Then they married some woman, got divorced, now don’t have place to go.
Kids hate their parents or their parents don’t want to spend more money in them?
“Hurry kid, leave my house, I want to drink more beer”. Oh, the US culture.

        • Sense

I would say that the life is getting more expensive than back in the time of the under 30′s parents.

I saw people living home and the parents are happy to have an extra hand to help them. In other way, people getting out of home when they get a girlfriend to live with.

But even that, i began to download when i was in school and not much cash to buy thing because i was not living home. After the school, it’s a matter of principle that i don’t buy anything from the entertainment industries.

“What is SOPA” was the most asked question typed into Google in both the U.S. and Australia” in 2012?

    Back up really slowly!

    Read that one again carefully!!

    Listen!!

    Why?

Because it’s way too easy to miss the bucket of bubbling nitro-glycerine buried there!!

After all, if “What is SOPA?” was the preponderant Google query in 2012, what does that scream at you about the current ability of any citizen with a five hundred dollar computer and an Internet Connection to make him/herself present, informed, and heard in the thick of one of the most important and contentious struggles on behalf of the Public Interest of our Time?

After all, wasn’t the question, “What is SOPA?” typed into the Google Bar, the all important magic keyhole by which hundreds of millions of American and global citizens chose to make themselves present, aware, and active against the efforts of special interests to flush Constitutional Rights down the toilet bowl?

Didn’t that magic query keyhole almost singlehandedly empower the singular historical spectacle of individual democratic citizens grabbing their Legislators by their electoral necks and forcing them all too reluctantly to honor their rights as citizens?

That query bar IS the modern doorway into the Public Square where Citizens take up the struggle over their collective destiny.

Today, Copyright Holders demand that Google slants the results of public queries so that what they don’t like doesn’t appear.

So, what does it mean when the querry that most threatens them is NOT the movie of the week; but, a Billion people asking, “What is SOPA?”

    Answer: Tic toc….tic toc….tic toc….tic toc…..tic toc…..tic toc …. tic toc….

what I like is how they claim HADDOPI is so effective at deterring piracy, yet the 3rd most searched term is “french”. They can’t all be from Quebec and Madagascar…

    • MadAsASnake

HADOPI was effective at getting the French Government to spend ridiculous amounts of taxpayer money at the media industries behest. This above all is what they want. This in itself screams for an inquiry. In regards declared intent, HADOPI is a total failure.

The francophone world is quite big apparently.

  • cdyak

i wonder where “torrent” ranks for 2012 in Google searches.

  • JG

    Two items of interest/note I noticed….

1.) The previously reported most pirated movie, Project X, didn’t make the list of most searched terms. The most pirated TV show, Game of Thrones, is only at #13, it didn’t even break the top 10….

2.) I’m kind of surprised to see items like DVDRip, 2011 & 2012, French and Ita on the list at all… I could see the rational for searching the site for just French movies or whatever, but I would expect terms like that to be paired with specific titles more frequently than just as a solo search criteria – “I just want DVDRips of the French version of Ted 2012″. I would kind of expect to see other title searches be more popular than these single search terms.

I suggest the shareholders of some of the media companies should be sacking their executives for the utter failure to respond to global demand for product and monetising it at the price the market will bear.
Launch globally. Make available on a torrent.
Give me a high quality HD film download for $1 within a month of the movie launch and I’ll buy.
A full series of Game of thrones in HD for $2 and I’ll buy
Give me a newly launched music album for $1 low quality of $2 flac and I’ll buy.
Give me an eBook for $1 and I’ll buy.
These are fair prices that much of the world can afford. Hundreds of millions, maybe a billion consumers are being lost.

The Walking Dead will have been helped into the top spot not only because of the tv show but also the excellent adventure game series… As it was released in 5 episodes that’s 5 times this year many people would be searching for it.

    • 2 Bunny

Both the game and TV series were very good. I think the searches definitely reflected that.
