Exclusive games.

Additionally, I guess I'm the only one, but I like having a collection of physical materials; things such as movies, games, CDs, etc. Sure it may take up space, but can't you agree that there is some satisfaction in putting your collection on display? This can even be applied to books and is a reason why I don't like eBooks.

I'm sure it will be defeated eventually but I don't think anyone is actively pushing to do so as it's easily avoidable by using a PC or media player box. And odds are that if you're downloading/archiving content then you're likely to have a PC capable of playing the media too.

I wonder if anyone has tried comparing the Cinavia source to a non-Cinavia source (ie the DVD which generally doesn't have Cinavia).

Fair play. And good point on updating players without net access. I've not actually got a BluRay player other than my PS3 but that's used for gaming only. Also, most new TVs playback video files and as far as I know, they don't have Cinavia detection (at least my friends LG 55" LM620T doesn't!)

I doubt I'd ever bother burning a bootleg video to bluray. Seems kind of inconvenient in the first place. In my mind this 'update' was obsolete before it came out of the door.

If I want a bluray movie I'll buy it. So it can sit on a shelf and look cool.

Well whatever you enjoy doing.

Personally I find the pc too noisy and power hungry just to play a film. Why not just have a little media box which accepts a memory stick and play the mkv off that? Then all this watermark business is history. We could even use an Arduino-style system to run an entire computer for this purpose on only a few watts.

Sorry but I found your post a little hard to understand as well Koala. The word Busted to me means what happens when you get caught by the authorities, not what happens when we beat their system to get something for free.

We beat DVD because a 16yr old cracked the DRM in 2hrs on his first attempt. After that we could copy the DVD and remove the DRM or rip to HDD. For me I used to mainly just copy them as it could not be deleted by mistake afterwards.

Blu-ray DRM has also been cracked. But this watermark system is a worry, plus it being in ALL blu-ray players. I hope there will be ways of getting players without it. The watermark would mean you couldn't put them back onto disc anymore unless you had a player without the watermark system. So we'll just have entertainment boxes which play MP4, AVI, MKV etc which was the natural progression anyway, it makes no difference. No doubt hacker will find a way of scrambling the hologram in a way which doesn't damage the film.

I personally never invested in Blu-ray in the first place due to the 7yr lifespan.

I don't own a BD player in either my pc or standalone. I just download movies now, whereas a few years ago I used to purchase all my movies.

If I had to say why I'd say it was probably because:

#1 titles are often terrible and I don't know whether they'll be good before watching.

#2 all this monitoring spying, stopping technology is a real worry. With DVD it was just a movie, there was no internet spying facility, and a movie would always work, even if the original publisher went out of business. Now in 50 years BDs may stop working, or my detail will be sent by my wifi to some server, or I'll be done for piracy on the odd film. You can keep it.
