It's absolutely about pointless "metrics." When your boss wants to know what *you're* doing to bring down those gosh-darn "pirates," it looks better to have an increasingly-large list of takedowns. Because, you know, more=better. Some "fancy internet tool owned by those Spotify pirates" isn't going to fly with an out-of-touch exec, but a PowerPoint that lists 6.75M takedowns sure will.

I'd bet it's not so much PR as it is somebody trying to keep their job via stupid metrics that look good to their bosses.

Your first point on control by big business and politicians is correct but your last sentence is wrong. The word "anathema" (someone or something intensely disliked or loathed) cannot be applied. You cleverly added Socialists and Muslims when you had been talking about government and business. I presume you wish to draw people's attention to these two groups because you dislike something about them. Did you witness the recent protests in Turkey when the government tried to block certain sites - Muslims in Turkey went out on the street and demanded that the internet remain open and free from censorship. As for Socialists not wanting a free and open internet you have to be kidding. I presume you are referring to the Stalin era. Most people today with liberal views on equality don't necessarily equate their internet actions with extreme Socialism or Capitalism - its just commonsense to use the internet to improve humanity.

People share because virtuous acts are their own reward. Ethics shapes the internet not political allegiances or national and cultural identities.

Proof that an encrypted file can be transformed via a given algorithm into a non-encrypted file is trivial if the file is being shared on the web. The password has to be supplied at some stage, and the URL points to the file's location on the disk. This can be overcome with P2P technology, where URIs do not point to specific locations.

Look into Key Norsk, they have a merger of URI+Onion Routing that might be of interest. Full disclosure: I used to work for them and really hope they succeed.

If the creator of the archive failed to specify "encrypt file names" at their shell, that's hardly a failure of the format.

AES containers (for instance TrueCrypt) are certainly NOT vulnerable to such simple mistakes as the entire filesystem is encrypted.
