Excellent idea. How about we claim that the department of internal affairs (who are probably the ones that monitor it) have been involved in file sharing or downloading copyrighted material? They'll get the chop, then watch them bleat. I hope the whole thing blows up in their face big time. It wouldn't take much of an effort to make this happen.

The sad irony about this law is that it was passed by a Labour govt which seems to have believed it was protecting the rights of artists (after all, the front-person for the policy was Judith Tizard, who has done a huge amount to promote NZ art). But the law was shaped by the MPAA & RIAA's local lobby groups, and similar industry lobbies (rather than groups who represent actual artists). Tizard et al seemed oblivious to the distinction.

Local ISPs and net commentators almost universally condemned the law, and are still doing so. But in the mainstream media the issue has generally been framed as one of protecting artists from pirates, which is why I"m so glad Creative Freedom have now launched their campaign (this week they're starting to make waves in newspapers and on TV news).

But Mark R. - are you kidding? Yes, Labour deserved to lose votes over this (and may have done so - after all, Tizard lost her seat!). But now we have a right-wing govt which is even more supportive of corporate property 'rights'. I hope I'm wrong, but I fear it'll be even harder to change this law, under the new National-ACT govt. Sigh...

The problem is that morals are entirely subjective and dpend on the individual or groups. Another individual or group will think that some act or belief is morally reprehensible.

Morals are also highly dependent on what the circumstances are as well as individuals. For example: you and me may well think that stealing is wrong but the starving homeless person will have a different moral viewpoint. Slavery is widespread and continues to this day in Africa - it's viewed as morally acceptable by some, perhaps due to lack of resources.

And also, what is "true" is a highly subjective topic as it is built on moral imperatives. In my own country, native people were viewed as animals. not humans, and hence were treated as such. The "truth" 60 years ago to the majority or peope is that blacks were not human's and had the same status as cattle, sheep and kangaroos.

You have a habit of attributing words and statements to me that I never produced: I never said "slavery or eating babies "okay" as long as one thinks that it is okay." or even implied that.

The fact is that what people think is not necessary what is true. If you do not think that slavery or eating babies is okay, even when one thinks it is okay, then morals exist objectively. Even if they do not actually exist, the fact is that it is certainly not best to jettison morals as is, and these morals condemn both slavery and the imposition of copyright on non-commercial activities.

Wow another hilarious law, it'll be easy for any country to shut down NZ by sending Copyright infringement accusation letters to all the IP originating from NZ. And viola the idiotic politicians have prevailed. Sucks to be in NZ tho, I'll take my business elsewhere.
