Most probably a paid for article by the MPAA to entice people to watch it in cinemas. But it's also what happens in actual reality and not fantasy maafia land. You can tell every person you meet in a day you have 300 TB of downloaded movies/music/series/whatever, and I don't think anyone will consider you a 'criminal', in fact unless you do so to boast or smth like that they won't probably consider you even a 'bad person'/'asshole' etc..

There is a huge gap in public perception of what intellectual property and rights should be and what corporations have actually managed to achieve for their own benefit. It's very undemocratic.

Some well known celebrities said publicly that they wouldn't pay their TV licence as they don't agree with it and the BBC. They never went after them like they do the average UK'er, simply because the negative press it would have caused, as well as bringing the TV licence debate back to the table.

The MAFIAA however like to make examples of people though. I assumed Perce could use journalistic material excuse if approached.

The legality of it is unquestionably against Pierce. Lots of stupid laws exist that shouldn't logically or reasonably exist, like bans on gay marriage, but the fact that they do cannot be denied, and it cannot be denied that torrenting copyrighted material without expressly written permission from the rights holders is illegal.

The comparison TF made is not the one they condone or truly think, but rather a use of the words anti-pirates will use. It's they who try to equate physical theft with "intellectual property theft," hence the termonology itself using identical-sounding words. By using their same words, the point of the article becomes (and TF in general) to point out that it doesn't make sense.

Also,

"Pierce’s initial piracy was illegal, no doubt, but when all is said and
done (especially considering his intent to promote and invest in the
movie) it hardly feels worthy of a stay in the slammer."

Yes, doubt. The illegality of copying which does not deprive and is thus not theft is questionable. Though Andy may neglect to acknowledge, condone or support the nature of whether there is doubt, in doing so, I question the value of Andy's articulability ( https://www.wordnik.com/words/articulability ) as a writer for TorrentFreak.

Of course, legality, as authorized and/or mandated by any one or more organized authorities or governing or otherwise superior or escalated communities, is also questionable, or the nature of such is.

For example, I could arbitrarily (or otherwise with various logicalities or faithfulnesses) express one or more legalities per my own authority, and anyone willing to comply and/or abide by such may or may not do so.

Andy

"There can be few people in the public eye, journalists included, who
would admit to stealing clothes from a Paris fashion show in order to
promote Versace’s consumer lines when they come out next season."

That is an example of theft which deprives used to compare or as analysis to what David Pierce did, which was distribute and contribute to copies/replications, which does not deprive.

This is not the first time a human affiliated with writing TorrentFreak articles has contributed to poor psychologically considered articles, but it is getting a bit degradatory to consider the quality of the articles being neglectful and seemingly inclusive of incompetency in such regards.
