After an outage of several days, one of the world’s largest and longest-standing adult torrent sites has announced that it will completely close down. The demise of Cheggit.net comes almost exactly a year after two huge adult sites, Empornium and PureTNA, disappeared from the Internet.

On 13th January 2011, two of the Internet’s largest adult entertainment BitTorrent trackers confirmed that they would permanently shut down.

It was a significant event – PureTNA had in excess of 1,329,500 members, a tally equaled by Empornium. The reasons for their shutdown remain unconfirmed.

While their members were understandably disappointed, they knew that with a flick of the wrist they would soon be enjoying themselves again on an alternative site. One of the top choices at the time – Cheggit.net.

Cheggit was created back in 2006 by ex-staff and users from Empornium who were disappointed with a controversial takeover by advertising outfit TargetPoint. Cheggit lived on until just a few days ago, when it disappeared. Now it’s back, but the news isn’t good – the end is here for Cheggit.

“Back in December ’11, when I embarked on a ‘bold new vision’ for the site, I thought we could change the site and make everything just work,” says Cheggit’s admin. “But as time went on, it just wasn’t feasible to do that and be in compliance.”

The site’s operator says that taking the decision to close the site wasn’t easy and took several weeks. But unlike some sites that simply close up, say nothing, and leave their communities high and dry, Cheggit’s admin told site members that the tracker is bowing out with an orderly exit for their benefit.

“I wanted to give the community a chance to exchange info and keep hooked up if you wanted to. That’s right….regardless of what you might think, this was done for the community.”

“Best decision? Who knows. But I do know that it isn’t the worst thing that could have happened. I’ve been at this far longer than I care to admit, and it would have sucked to just lop it off,” he notes adding, “As much as this may suck, it doesn’t suck near as much as just going away.”

Cheggit’s admin also assures its users that the shutdown has nothing to do with the FBI, MPAA or ICE, and isn’t a veiled attempt at “a ponzi scheme to relaunch Megaupload.”

It’s been a hard 12 months for adult torrent sites. In April 2011, Pornolab, the world’s largest porn tracker, had its servers seized by Ukranian authorities, but eventually made a comeback.

would like to start a page, a movement I guess you’d call it, to call on everyone who ever uploaded something to an online sharing site, to find their files and create a torrent to let it live again..Guess a hashtag would be needed…was thinking of #StolenData or #DataFree and to have a blog/twitter feed etc and get the word spread that the internet, ideas, and file sharing will never ever die….

don’t know how to go about posting to a blog/twitter without getting traced though…does Tor really work for that sort of thing?

  In the past 6 months, not only had the gov’t stepped up their efforts against file sharing sites, but the “content providers” had been using the DMCA to flag and remove torrents from cheggit. The system was even automated, so it would only need to search for certain tags and submit the request to delete. In other words, the tag “jenna.jameson” returned 0 results, while “jenna.j4me$on” might have been skipped by the bots. Cheggit users were getting letters from their ISPs in certain countries and thus the liability became too great for the admins to bear; they didn’t want to go through what the piratebay guys went through. The “content providers” were gearing up for a massive lawsuit and the constant flagging and harassing was just the first step. They wanted none of it and I don’t blame them.

Let’s face it, recently they’ve been pulling tons of uploads since they decided they had to comply with DMCA requests. As soon as that decision and subsequent policy took effect, the site was essentially DEAD. Thus, this news isn’t surprising.

Regretfully, there’s nothing close to approximating Cheggit right now. When Emp and PTNA went down, Cheggit was the natural place for users to migrate. Regarding adult trackers, there’s really slim pickings. The majority have some major issues:
anemic content, smallish user base, low number of seeders, poor presentations, no tags etc…

One, they didn’t want to admit to any wrongdoing (just to keep their asses covered), second, there’s a little bit more to the story, but that’s a discussion for another time — after the dust settles. And finally, things weren’t exactly certain. The “porn companies” are not the MPAA/RIAA. It wasn’t clear if they were going to have the same backing by the US government or not. It wasn’t clear if they were going to file a lawsuit or not. How close were they? Were they just poisoning torrents or were they also compiling a list of user IP addresses? And if they did, was it going to be against the admins? Against uploaders? against specific users? all of the above? It also wasn’t clear what kind of legal footing they had in the event of a lawsuit. They host no actual content since it’s a tracker, but that didn’t stop the US government from going after TPB. Nothing was hosted in the US, except technically the domain (.net), so at the very least, were they going to even seize the domain? What about the servers then? Were they going to raid the data center? Were the sysops going to be arrested? What about the guys outside US jurisdiction? Were they going to be extradited?
    
    There were just too many unanswered questions and too many variables to consider and a detailed, technical explanation that included the unmentioned details was going to be too much. It’s much simpler to say what he said and he’s right; to anyone who’s been paying attention, the writing was on the wall. Case in point: many, many, people said this was going to happen in the discussion threads over there, hence the reason why he brought it up (“to those who called it, even a broken clock is right twice a day…”). It was an uphill battle in many ways. Why be an asshole and claim he was “playing around like a dickwad”? He doesn’t owe you any fucking explanation. At least we got some closure as opposed to what happened to pTNA and EMP; they just went dark and even their admins and mods got zero notice.

wow does that ever suck. I went to cheggit after pure t’n'a went offline and built up a decent ratio so I always had “room to breathe” on this private site.

Oh well, at least I didn’t dedicate more bandwidth than I did as I have my own flac releases to upload (especially the one that struggle with low seeds).

I’ve used cheggit for years, and honestly it’s no great loss. Over the last few months to a year the admin team at cheggit got progressively worse. By the end they were banning/censoring a ridiculous amount of content. Basically they would remove any torrent that any company or individual told them to. At some point you have to ask yourself “if they remove any torrent on request, why not just remove them all? After all no copyright holder wants their work online under any circumstances if they have a choice.”

Once you start caving to any anonymous guy on the internet claiming to be a copyright holder on a daily basis, you probably shouldn’t be running a torrent site. Here’s hoping something better rises to replace Cheggit.

  They did get lawyer letters. It is no joke. It is not anonymous. If you share files on these non-private sites and they get your ip address, you can get sued and will have to pay real money. There are threads in cheggit forum about this. I think any popular site, relatively public ones, will get in trouble eventually.

This raises an important question. Why is porn even covered by copyright at all? The purpose of copyright was supposed to be to encourage more publication of books or artistic works. So why should the government give copyrights to porn, to encourage the publication of more porn?

Just say porn isn’t covered by copyright. Oh, well, porn would still thrive and its producers would still make money without copyright, and then the whole sham of copyright somehow being necessary would be exposed as the fraud against the public that it is.

Cheggit admins are douchebags. “People who have been paying attention expected this” my ass. Two days ago they said there was no danger of the site going down and it was under “extended scheduled maintenance.” While admittedly pathetic, I did pay close attention to the operation of Cheggit and saw no sign of this happening, other than the always-existent possibility since the people who run the site are the same assholes who sold out Empornium in the first place. If it hadn’t been for all the great contributors there, no one would have stuck around. Fuck the admins there and good riddance to their shitty website that only got a real search box 6 months ago.

I can’t believe how many people here are ragging on Cheggits operators as if they shut the site down just to piss you off personally. And regardless of what some raging dimwits in here claim – unless you had your head up your ass, the writing was on the wall. Once they started aiming for compliance the whole place just lost momentum. With take-down requests reducing available content to a bare minimum, what was there left to do except pull the plug?

I’m just glad the ride lasted for as long as it did. That place was the best porn tracker full stop. It had some fantastic up-loaders – and they stuck around so I guess the admins were doing something right. It also had a stellar system for indexing and searching.

As I now look at the alternatives available to me, it makes me miss the place twice as much. I can’t fucking believe the amount of garbage a guy has to wade through just to see some decent t&a. And don’t even get me started on tube sites. So much noise out there, so little music.

The sad fact is that Nate’s work does more damage to the porn industry as a whole than the good it does his few clients. I researched the industry for the Internet industry journal, Industry Standard, when it reached its first heyday during the 90s Boom. It was clear then and its even clearer now that the free distribution of content always boosted the fortunes of the producers by making available samples of work that buyers otherwise would not know about, let alone not buy. Producers build up oevres — bodies of work — that become known by their content and style. As older works accumulate and are noticed, they benefit the sales of the artists’ newer works. And for new producers, the free distribution may detract from immediate sales but have longterm beneficial effects. This is because “pirates” also are buyers and there are even more buyers who are swayed by the “pirates’ hit parade.” This is all factual.

This of course is the situation only for new releases. Older videos quickly slide off the charts and out of the public consciousness unless someone brings them back for public display. That’s why the industry churns out so much crud: it’s hoping that some will have a half-life longer than two months, but not counting on it. In this sense the industry is as inefficient as it can be and earns its high costs and low net margins. The industry tries to compensate by charging astronomical prices for its wares — little of which gets to the performers or even the directors and crews, by the way, it’s still a sweatshop industry for the most part — and then bitches when people try to acquire its products at reasonable prices, i.e., since there is no reasonably priced product, for free. The industry gives little choice. AEBN and its clones appear to offer an alternative, but their prices, though charged in smaller increments, are even higher per movie.

Which gets down to the issue, where’s the win-win solution? It sure isn’t Nate’s. He ultimately does his clients more harm than good, even if he doesn’t know it (though I would suspect such ignorance as feigned — everyone knows it). The people pushing for such draconian solutions aren’t his little mom and pop corner porn shops (they’ve already been screwed, no pun intended, by the Internet) or indie producers — they would die for a way of showing their flicks without having to pay intermediates and monopolist distributers for the privilege, a situation that Nate defends by eliminating competition for the monopolists. Note: in a capitalist society like ours where large interests have basically turned every industry into an oligopoly that the dominant player is trying to turn into a monopoly, all of the talk about just rights and Constitutional protections is so much sloganeering bullshit. Citizens United is, according to our pro-corporate US Supreme Court, also Constitutional. So what if it fucks the skull of Democracy? That’s Nate Talk. His ilk have been spouting this for longer than he’s been in business, a mere 13 years. It goes way back, to the $250,000 fine and 20 years in jail for showing a movie without a license, courtesy of MPAA. (By the way, it’s good to see MPAA and its latest stooge, Dodd, take a fall on SOPA and PIPA, even more extreme expressions of national power exerted on behalf of a handful of very rich people.

There was a time when Good King John had his otherwise loyal subjects, who served in his armies and paid taxes faithfully though they had little for themselves, hung for poaching The King’s Deer. He made the laws, he got to exercise justice with a heavy hand that eventually broke the monarchy. Nate’s actually helping along the demise of the porn industry, so if that’s the industry’s goal, more power to him. If it’s not, it should ostracize him and his self-anointed lawmen, and figure out ways to monetize the fabulous demand for the industry’s product that is going untapped. Do more sharing that comes with a price, like most shareware: try it, like it, buy it, get some bennies (akin to free flights, like Southwest offers), have customers rate and recommend, etc.. Bring consumers into the circle of players as Videoz does, building a community as much as showing flicks, increasing the subscribers’ sense of belonging, ownership, and commitment. Find ways to bundle free with pay, like cable companies do. There are a hundred more satisfying and financially rewarding ways to go about this than brute forcing websites down and just chasing people elsewhere.

I know, it’s the old story of the two guys chased by the bear. One stops to put on his tennis shoes. The other shouts, “Why, you can’t outrun the bear?” To which the sprinter replies, “I only have to outrun you.” Nate is helping his customers to avoid the tsunami of file-sharing brought on by a small group of monopolistic firms charging super-rents. He helps his handful of small clients to divert the flood elsewhere — so he’s really not helping the industry. He’s helping his clients. The worse it gets for the industry, the better for Nate. He’s not fighting crime, he’s driving up prices for contraband of which he then takes a cut. Basically, he and the porn fat cats like it just the way it is: pure gravy for them, gruel for the smaller producers, and plenty of clever peer-to-peer sharers to cull the crowd of producers by starving them of money. When the industry comes to terms with its potential customer base and provides products, service, and opportunities for its involvement, the Nates of the world will become superfluous, obsolete Wyatt Earps in the digitally networked 22nd Century. The industry and its consumers will be best of friends. The Nates, like the Pinkerton thugs who “defended” the robber barons against their workers, will have to console themselves with memories of better days. Here’s to his retirement, happy or not, sooner rather than later.

PS I don’t know of any indie producers who condone what Nate et al do. I know they’d like better direct relations with their customers. It’s the big commercial firms I fault, big not because they offer innovative or high-quality product, but big because they control the means of distribution. “Sic temper tyrannis”, so it goes with all tyrants. And their lackeys. Their demise inevitably comes (no pun intended).

Thr porn industry has been dead for many years and was never killed by torrents. Their greatest competition has been the amount of homemade vids hitting the internet which they cannot compete against.
