Well, the US courts are clearly acting as willing henchmen for RIAA and the likes; it’s the courts who are doing the actual extortion. Judges with a touch of reason and humaneness would have thrown the case out of court, but then the US legal system would have had to be about justice, which again would have required the USA to be a democracy.

This does not excuse the bloodthirsty RIAA one bit, of course – their ‘job offer’ is as sleazy as can be.

However, there is another way out for Jammie Thomas: if enough of her sympathizers would donate a few dollars, RIAA could have their blood money and Ms. Thomas might have a break. I don’t know if a setup for such donations already exists, but if it does, I’d like to know.

What RIAA and organisations like them are doing, is nothing more than “legalized extortion”. First they threaten you with high fines and dragging you into court (which becomes more expensive). Then when they finally convict you, they try to “bribe” you by for example offering a job lobbying against that which you were just convicted for.

“Innocent until proven guilty”, is a concept alien to these organisations. Once they have you in court, rather than having the prosecution prove you are guilty, it’s the defendant who must prove their innocence.
