Y’know, if they charged him 100x less – $6,750 – he might actually pay it instead of going bankrupt (probably). And people might actually be more intimidated, since the size of the fine is something they could actually wrap their heads around. Just sayin’.

Not really. The jury is there to decide whether the defendant is guilty of what he was accused of. And he clearly was (thanks to the law being a dick). The punishment then is for the judge to decide.

So the only exemplar of cuntness here is the judge, NOT the jury.

Well, that’s the reason we have courts. To try people accused of breaking law. While this sentence is outrageous, he at least had a chance to defend himself. How do you know that, without this court case, the “default” sentence would be his way?
