The vast majority of music and other copyrighted information are not held by individual artists, but my media conglomerates – who now have a copyright period of 120 years. It is well known that the vast majority of artists and other creators and inventors, even highly successful ones, do not receive more than a tiny fraction of the overal profit generated by their labor. Copyright law does not, and in capitalist relations cannot, serve the individual creator, artist and inventor, except in rare cases.

Even where a person, an individual, has successfully created something popular and claimed a copyright, it cannot be enforced without expensive legal teams. For those who have individual copyrights on massively successful pieces, the piece provides the revenue for legal protection; for many others the revenue is insufficient for this. There are many examples which crop up weekly of inventions or creations by individuals being stolen or used by large conglomerates without compensation, and the inventor/creator is virtually powerless to do anything about it.
