I live here in Taiwan and I like the triad theory as a jumping off point, but it's not that simple. The real problem here is we have super fast connections here in Taiwan compared to most of the world. Most of the locals I know don't run virus programs or practice safe computing. Even in the fleet of 10 boxes I have moderate control over the only ones clean are the few I maintain, and use an English OS. I harangue my wife and employees to update the virus defs and not click on attachments, but I let my guard down for a few weeks... and boom another infestation that takes hours to sort out. I sadly have to agree that maybe the Taiwanese and Chinese have more than their share of botnets. My guess is that these botnets are created by the chinese communists to use in cyberwarfare against Taiwan and others. The theory they could be leasing them to RIAA contractors and sympathisers is a very good possibility. These botnets may thus be run by the Triads, but I doubt they are actually trying to protect their pirate DVD sales. I don't go out looking for them, but I never saw many fake DVD's in my decade in Taiwan, so I doubt these were a big profit center (but I could be wrong). If there is any industry it would NEED access to Demonoid to get high quality source files with which they would hardcode the chinese subtitles or dubs to. Yet Thailand and Indonesia and Vietnam are overflowing with fake DVD's...because they have poor internet connectivity.

So sadly, yes it has to be a Chinese (whatever flavour you want of them) thing, as no one seems to be blocking/complaining about the Japanese or the Koreans who have 100MB connections instead of Taiwan's average 8MB connections. I guess I have to agree that the Chinese/Taiwanese folk here are not the best computer users, sorry.

But all that said I miss Demonoid and hope that they can find some workaround for this. I've been a pirating scoundrel since Napster beta 4. I imagine my usage nears a terabyte every few months. I've seen so many great sites disappear, but this is hard to take just being banned like this. I haven't heard of eztv, or any other popular site banning us. With the loss of mininova, TPB seemingly less effective than it once was, Demonoid has a depth for rare stuff that is pretty hard to replicate. Folks above are dissing it but it is one of the best. I've been a demonoid member since around 2005, all of those years here in Taiwan, and I was overjoyed when they came back online after the year shutdown... and they still had my login and ratio intact! Because of this I am certain they are working on some ways to get legit users a way to access them. But I'm sad to say it'll be a lot harder to get Chinese people to maintain their computers. I mean c'mon....they put poison in their own peoples milk and toothpaste, and lead in their kid's toys to make a few bucks.SPOP

You see guys, that is not about racism nor Chinese, it's all about the money, money, and money. A lot of money for the greedy one so that they can married and divorce for many times, buy big houses & limousines, put air conditioner on their dog houses, drugging, and fucking for 24-hours. Our world is sick...

I live in Taiwan... I have given gifts to Demonoid to maintain their work. I am angry over being so blocked without warning, without option, and without regard. There are MANY expats here that depend on Demonoid for english language entertainment and this just STINKS. Even VPN is not getting through the blocking now.

China and Taiwan have problem the largest per-capita of botnet/infested/trojaned networks too.....

It really is a security problem for their country. There are so over-populated they can't keep tabs on everyone.

#83 "What is with all of the Demonoid hate, exactly? (...) I have been a member of many exclusive private trackers and they were extremely overrated for the most part."

Since Demonoid bans entire countries, often without any justification or explanation (like with Germany), I think that if you're from one of those arbitrarily blocked countries, you're absolutely right to reciprocate their contempt with contempt for them. Blocking whole countries is as elitist as it gets, and they richly deserve the bad comments from there they earned this way.

What is with all of the Demonoid hate, exactly? I get everything that I want from Demonoid at decent speeds. I occasionally find malware in an upload, but nothing like you'd find on TPB. The community successfully identifies most malware and has it removed. Hint: WinRAR and Windows cracks are favorite malware delivery systems.

I have been a member of many exclusive private trackers and they were extremely overrated for the most part. Some of them were fairly close to scams, selling upload credit and banning many perfectly decent users for not being able to seed. Enforcing a ratio of one sounds reasonable, until you realize that over half of users have high speed seedboxes.

Even the legitimate private trackers are unnecessarily elitist when it come to client software and upload privileges. Honestly, there have only been a few clients that ever really needed to be banned. Banning every client except uTorrent and Azureus is just stupid, especially considering how many modded Azureus clients there were. The only three bad clients still around are BitComet (old versions), BitLord (all versions), and BitThief. There was never anything wrong with BitTyrant, but there would have been no reason to use it on a private tracker.

Private trackers are not any safer from government/corporate snoops either. As a matter of fact, their higher position in the warez chain makes them more attractive. If you think you can keep infiltrators out, you're an idiot. The typically small number of uploaders are easily targeted. Even your ultra-secret trackers that you think no one knows about are well known to government agencies. I won't mention any names here out of courtesy, but you know who you are.

This is not the hateful rant of a "n00b" against private trackers. I was sharing warez long before BitTorrent became the next big thing. I have never failed to seed any clean torrent to a ratio of five or greater no matter how long it took. I have never used unfair or subpar clients. Essentially, I am the ideal BitTorrent user and I hate elitist private trackers.

Hey Triad boy,
If these organized sellers of pirated material in China wanted to hurt free torrent sites, why would they choose Demonoid? It purposely keeps a low profile and is private. I think they could do much more damage by attacking TPB or other larger, public torrent sites. Maybe they paid the Argentinian guy to attack TPB for them (LOL). After your Mommy makes your lunch for you, why don't you go outside the basement and spend some time the summer sun!

@62: Now that sounds like the most plausible theory here. That the real pirates (those who sell what they copy) don't like the idea that a torrent site is on their turf, so they attack it with their botnets.

They were under attack a few months ago - I wonder if the same cybercrime gang was behind those attacks as well?

Well, their loss. Demonoid: keep up blocking misc. countries (Germany et. al), and watch the quality of torrents decline. Block enough countries, and the quality will nosedive.

This is FANTASTIC news!

Think about it, seriously:

China is the most populated country in the world. Of course EVERY citizen doesn't use bittorrent, but for those who do use Demonoid probably make up several thousand or maybe even more (Which I wouldn't doubt).

So now with the site being blocked in said areas, I wonder if the Seed to Peer ratios will be better?

I will add something that will come as surprise to many

The real reason for DDoS attack was loss of income for the Triad criminal gangs

They run the piracy business in china peddling pirate movie DVDs and anything digital that people wanna buy

Since this torrent business started they lose money as people can get it free on net and they dont buy from Triads

So Triad hired hackers who used botnets to target demonoid.

This is not the end of attacks, other torrent sites will eventually come under increased from Triads...

hey Torrentfreak, how come u guys did not report the latest news from Chile-

Chile becomes first country to guarantee net neutrality - Bill passes through parliament unhindered:

"Chile has become the first nation to officially put net neutrality principles into law. In a vote by the Chilean legislature, the new law won a near unanimous vote, according to local media.

The new law forces ISPs to "ensure access to all types of content, services or applications available on the network and offer a service that does not distinguish content, applications or services, based on the source of it or their property".

The legislation also requires ISPs to provide parental controls that block objectionable content, as well as requiring written consent before paying for online services and ensuring that ISPs have proper security measures in place.

The amount of support for the bill was surprising, but Chile is looking to expand its technological infrastructure. Around half of the population use the internet on a regular basis, and broadband speeds in metropolitan centres are around 2Mbit/s.

Net neutrality campaigners in other countries will be using this case as a legislative example of how net neutrality could work on a state level."

I know corps. pay the Chinese hacker to do this. They pay them $3 an hour. I have seen it first hand.
If I was to offer advice to torrenters, I would block China and Israel. Yes, Israel. I know they are monitoring and passing info onto studios.

Don't believe me? Fine, but block them, and watch your threats vanish.

The MAFIAA were funding efforts to engage in this type of activity in the past. They've tried exploiting weak hashing algorithms back on the fasttrack network from IPs leased from Performance Systems International, they even tried to screw with bittorrent but all they could do was slow things down a bit until everyone knew exactly who they were.

Now DoS attacks from overseas?

I doubt it's hackers (hackers don't DoS, they hack), even script-kiddies know that demonoid isn't a people's enemy, therefore attacking it earns them no credibility...

I'd bet it's an industry-funded effort and I bet if demonoid, TPB and others shared the attackers IP addresses they'd find IPs in the same range attempting to attack multiple torrent sites.

By the way almost all Proxy websites cannot be accessed here in China, also blocked. All the suggestions in this threat canNOT be accessed here, shows the 404-Page not found page!!! It is necessary to pay for some VPN access if you want to go through China Firewall

Unfortunately I currently work in China, China is a very nice Country however the restrictions in internet freedom are terrible. My guess is that Demonoid is blocked by the "Great China Firewall", many websites blocked such as Facebook, Tweeter and Youtube. Around 3 weeks ago Demonoid cannot be accessed from China mainland however in HK Demonoid is STILL available that is why my suspicious goes to China Government Firewall. China is blocking a lot of BT websites including the local Chinese torrent sites, they want to ban BT access here

By dirty job I mean the DoS attacks.
The attacks are then done from China I guess. Taiwanese hackers would be to pricy.

I'm in Taiwan and the site is off since mid june. Since Demonoid isn't popular at all here I can only guess that the "Majors" are paying the local Mafia to do this dirty job for them.
