Demonoid Domains Go Up For Sale

While it’s undoubtedly been a turbulent couple of weeks for Demonoid, its loyal users still had hope that one day the site might return. However, today the chances of that happening appear to have been cut from an optimistic 50/50 to much, much less. All key Demonoid domains are now up for sale to the highest bidder, signaling what could be the start of the end of an era

With an army of passionate fans, Demonoid was spoken about fondly by many in the torrent community. Just two weeks ago it was one of the world’s largest and most thriving torrent sites but a DDoS and hacker attack followed by a police raid brought it to its knees.

After days of silence, last Thursday the IFPI took credit for the complaint behind the takedown.

“The operation to close Demonoid was a great example of international cooperation to tackle a service that was facilitating the illegal distribution of music on a vast scale. I would like to thank all those officers involved in this operation to close a business that was built on the abuse of other people’s rights,” said the IFPI’s anti-piracy director Jeremy Banks.

Last week a source at ColoCall, Demonoid’s former webhost, said he believed that the site’s management was based in Mexico. It was later confirmed that a criminal investigation is underway in the country and that a number of arrests and asset seizures had already taken place.

However, in the middle of all the chaos and arrests TorrentFreak maintained contact with the site’s technical admin who still has control of the site’s domains. Due to his presumed position of freedom hope remained that one day the site would return, but today that seems more unlikely than ever.

The three key Demonoid domains – Demonoid.me, Demonoid.com and Demonoid.ph – are now all up for sale on Sedo, a popular domain name and website marketplace.

DemonoidSale

Selling the domains now while traffic to Demonoid remains high should ensure a good price for the vendor, but it seems unlikely that any buyer would look to relaunch as a torrent site.

Of course, “up for sale” doesn’t mean “sold”, but at this stage hopes that the site might one day return appear to be dwindling faster than ever.

Later today we hope to obtain a comment from Demonoid on this latest development and will update this post accordingly.

Some scumbag will buy it and put ads all over it.

    • FrostyC

Kim Dotcom should buy it as an alt domain for Megabox! Bet that would stick in their craw.

      • ANo

        Nice thought…wishes too

Most likely be anti-pirates who buy it, to make an example.

        • Lord of the Files

I still don’t understand what the copyright goons are trying to accomplish. All torrent sites do is connect users to one another. The actual files themselves are on those users computers which nobody has taken away. So long as least two people can freely communicate in this world, sharing to one degree or another is inevitably going to happen. Even if they could somehow take down every single torrent site out there, the files would still be freely shared. It boggles my mind how much time and money the pro-copyright crowd waste pissing into the wind lol. :)

        • Cucking Funt

Yup, and they’ll probably pay for it by using the money extorted from ISPs and files sharers which should have gone to the artists as royalties………

    • thedude321

You’re right. A lot like what they did with Library.nu. Makes me sick to the stomach.

      • Anon

Share what’s free! Don’t infringe on what’s for sale. Common sense. Pirates needed better parenting.

        • ANo

Fuck up..We can share stuff that’s also for sale.

          Meanwhile, at the cinema
Sometimes just before my friend is about to buy…… I say…
“STOP, I have some popcorn with me, we can share that” ….then say…. “popcorn in the cinema is a fucking rip-off, don’t waste your hard earned money on extortionately priced corn, good friend”

I was taught…. It’s good to share….it’s good to look out for your friends.
          I was also taught….
That it’s BAD to be a greedy cunt and to discriminate against poor people.

Your parents must be / were,  greedy cunts with zero empathy or kindred spirit.

So no whistling songs down the street then! that’s public performance and illegal by your logic.

          spot on.

        • Anoynmousgoat

except that the domain names were actually stolen as they are no longer in possession of demonoid. nice try trying to compare apples to oranges mongrel.

Better watch out, if you wear non-Nike gear or get caught drinking Pepsi at the Olympics, because the brand police will come for you then, too.   I guess everyone needs better parenting.

        • Kevin

no one NEEDS the new lady gaga album in order to live, no one is going to kill a kitten if you dont buy avengers on bluray. if you think the price is too high then BOYCOTT IT! DONT BUY IT, BUT DONT DOWNLOAD IT EITHER!

the message that needs to be sent is we dont need what these companies are selling, so they can either lower the prices or go out of business. pirating copyrighted material sends the message that we DO need to have the
stuff, but are unwilling to pay for it. this is what encourages the
lobby groups to push for tougher and tougher copyright laws

        • Truth

          ha.

          That will never happen.

You’re talking to a bunch of zeroes whose entire life is based around the content created by the elite in music and film. They’re hopelessly addicted to it.

They steal to stave off the shakes.

          Pathetic, worthless parasites.

New record for how quickly it takes someone to use the word scum on here!

      Well done sir!

Meh a url’s just a url and a name’s just a name. If they return then the important thing is the spirit is the same.

However a return is looking increasingly unlikely. Is anywhere in the world safe from the reach of these American studios?

Thats it…a domain hosted by an ISP from a Canadian native reservation… thats the last place the law can touch…

        • chronoss chiron

and ten they did up all hte net around you and you can just serve the reserve.

i wonder why there are no torrent sites based in Hong Kong or mainland China. now there is the only place safe from American law

        • Guest

mega WAS based in hong kong And look how well that turned out
(i know it wasnt strictly a torrent site but it kinda was)

        • Xyberz

Because no one wants to be put to death or near it in China for doing stupid things.  Communism isn’t someplace where you’d like to do illegal crap and get caught.

        • ChinaPerson:0

Because, in China, they just dl direct (P2P) – no torrenting needed. They have various sites dedicated to it (Sina,Youku, Tudou, and others). So it’s such a big thing there’s all this advertising etc on it. State-sponsored piracy… awesome! :D

          (from someone who lives there…)

        • FF

          or iran and syria.

    • Anonymous

instead of the sad death and advertising turn over why doesent the tech admin just bring his backup data to the pirate bay crew i am sure they would be happy to bring back and run the site especially since TPB taking it over would be a Gigantic middle finger to the US and Ukrainian government

      • guy

What data are you talking about? Most, if not all of Demonoid torrents are also on the piratebay tracker. What is lost is way more important than that: a place fob the community, a safe place with good reputation. That’s what made that site almost free from fakes and malware.
Now we will have to wait for the next site to build up that sense of safeness and good reputation, and it make take a while. As for the files, they’re always available.

        • Boomscd

not all files i tried dl the conan doyle audio books and stuck at 99.4%

      • Cougerforme1

that would be nice but ptb day will come. sooner or later we all will just have to been over and take it up the ***

      http://www.filedust.com

    • Ophelia Millais

If the IFPI were smart, they would buy the domain so they could get a piece of that ad-hosting action, and they would use the site to (at the very least) direct people to their many paid services that Demonoid was competing very well against, if not also providing a high-quality service of their own. Oh, but they won’t do that, will they? I wonder why not?

      • LiveFreely

Step 1) Buy demonoid.me for like a million dollars

Step 2) Place ads to CinemaNow, iTunes, etc.

Step 3) Place face in palm when demonoid returns on another domain lol

Also, my bookmark toolbar looks incomplete without the little green devil. :’(

  • http://torrentfreak.com/ Rob8urcakes

Demonoid is NOT dead, and near death doesn’t mean fatal – as we’ve seen countless times before wit our beloved site.

I reckon this is simply a clever move to entice people to invest in the Demonoid ‘brand’ that we all know and love, because inward investment of cash would certainly assist everyone concerned to keep the sites alive and active.  And what better way to do that than ASK for interested parties with cash to take a look, yeah?

I’m not giving up on Demonoid quite yet folks, and I aint holding a wake in memory of it’s premature demise either.

    Demonoid FTW ffs :)

    • WasterOfTime

Whether this was a ruse to bring in more subscriptions/users or not (an attempted mimic of TPB), I hope they return, nonetheless.

May God have mercy on our beloved Demonoid, and anyone who had an account there, just in things go worse.

    • Elmstreetslasher81

love demonoid, never any problems. I don’t see the problem that they have with them. Are there any other sites that are comparable??

I got things from there that I couldn’t find anywhere else, and the things I could find if expensive, I would buy if it ended up being worth my money. I found most of my favorite authors from that site whose books wouldn’t have been bought without that site

I do get a sense of your passion. But cannot find any reason as to why. Perhaps you’d care to explain a little further. I’m sure everyone at TF would be hanging on your every word of wisdom.

  • Don

Google doesn’t pay  squat on torrent traffic.  Buyers block it, google penalizes it, and .me adds to the penalty.  Typo’s of demonoid, like demoid.me get 3-500 uniques/day with google paying about .10-.25c per day total.

The demonoid.me domain is worthless unless you want to open a torrent site.

    Don

  • Guest

I think the pirate bay should hold on to it for now. Didn’t they help out last time Demonoid was getting rear-ended?

  • Anonymous

such a sad thing to see. i wonder how many files were on Demonoid that are nowhere else, meaning they will be lost forever? as usual, the collateral damage isn’t even thought about. as long as the entertainment industries get what they want, without giving what the people keep asking for, (ie legal alternatives that they want, not those that the industries are prepared to give) fuck everything else!

    • Mwhahaha

Well they won’t be lost, just unreachable until they get uploaded elsewhere.

I think the collateral damage was the purpose of all this.

  • Aj_pour

cant believe it!!! the only private tracker that i had access to, and now its gone.
WTF am i supposed to do now?
    o please come back..

    • 45king

Demenoid wasn’t a private tracker.. anyone could browse torrents if they like and download..

      • Pacifistsrcowards

Really? Maybe the “DEMENOID” you’re talking about wasn’t private, but the site “Demonoid” that the  rest of us are talking about required an invitation to join.

        • Opfmvbbm

Yeah it required an invite to join, however you could search and DL torrents.

(limited number per week but you could DL for sure)

        • John Spartan

For the last year or so you havnt needed to login to Demonoid in order to download torrents or browse torrents, therefore…. No it wasnt private.

        • S E

No it didn’t. They frequently had open registrations a few times a year and you could also download a certain amount of files without logging in. It was NOT private!

        • Guest420

for the last year? more like from the beginning. i believe you just couldn’t download “new” torrents unless you were a member.

  • geno

    =[   LOVE & RESPECT TO DEMONOID!!!    ]=

    • Jlopez44144

im here because it is a sad thing that many must pay the price in jail because many of ordinary people would like to test before we buy.  I downloaded autocad a few years ago from Demonoid and it had so many features that by the time I went to play with it, it had been months and one day I simply deleted it because it was taking to much space.  Just wondering if I would had paid for it and had a copy for $20,000.00, would it had affected the company that created this program?  I am certain that I would of been calling for months and years trying to get my money back, because I am not an engineer and I am not trying to clutter my 32bit system.  I’m going to miss Demonoid for saving me thousands of hard earned money.  I am sorry many don’t feel appreciated as me.

This seems to apply to the .me one, isn’t the .ph one  supposed to be based in the Philippine’s?

    • Volc

Some top-level domains that are country-coded require a base in that country to use them, such as .my (since you could imagine that would be a popular TLD, only companies based in Malaysia can use it). Others don’t. I assume that there’s no requirement to physically be in the the Philippines to use the .ph TLD.

      • Eco_paul

Seeing as I live in a country where I pay a TV licence for programmes to be made, I don’t see why I should have to pay for my own personal copy of a program I have already helped to fund. As a licence payer who doesn’t always have the time to watch when program’s air I see no reason why I can’t download said program from somewhere like Demonoid, why should I pay extra money for the DVD I have already paid for the program to be made!

Okay I appreciate this does not apply to everything that is available to download, but there is a balance to be struck, artists need to be paid, but we have a right to pay a fair price and not be ripped off.

    • Guest

Both are gone and for sale

two things i noticed, and most will agree with my comments…
    1) “…tackle a service that was facilitating the illegal distribution of music on a vast scale”
most of us can agree that was the least of the things they did.

    2) “…DDoS and hacker attack followed by a police raid …”
the order of events was not a coincidence.

Real shame they didn’t follow the TPB user and release a tarball of all torrents. Of course with their weird numbering scheme only someone on the admin team could have done it. They probably didn’t due to ego.

If and/or when Demonoid comes back, will it probably be under a new name?  And will we have to find what it  is through the grape vine?  It was the best organized, with the best clean  torrents I could find.  Always new and rare stuff available, with a clean search interface that allowed for lots of subcatagories.

  • dwpbike

now that i have some bandwidth, demonoid is gone.  i didn’t mind having to convert all that flac to mp3

    • xpmule

never seen a flac release that wasn’t out as mp3 first
      your comment is odd..
i guess you never got out much eh ?

lesson here is never rely on one source.
i’ve always used many trackers, searches etc
you see a lot more of the world that way and that is
why i think its strange people think demonoid was so great
i barely seen anything there that i couldn’t find else where first
with the exception of the odd exclusive release that would of course
wind up on TPB among other places

Demon was over rated and not having it has made no difference to me at all what so ever .

      • Davecrawford606

gee, asshole, you ever think that some people wanna MAKE THEIR OWN mp3s from a LOSSLESS (with log and cue/checksum/verified lineage etc…)source?maybe YOU should get out more, there was A LOT of rare stuff  on Demonoid that is NOT on public trackers.i personally shared quite a few very rare bootlegs  there, that i ve NEVER seen on public trackers(as they came from p2p,snail  mail,or other private and semi private trackers). just because you probably have mainstream shitty music taste and u can find everything YOU want on a public tracker,it doesn t mean others can find everything they want.public trackers are not very good for obscure releases period, but they are GREAT for general stuff.u probably can get any invites to any good trackers cuz yr a loser. Long Live Demonoid

  • littlemang

  • O_0

Just because its listed on sedo does not mean it will actually be allowed to sell.  I know many people who posted domains on sedo just to get an idea of what its worth with no intention to sell. People can make countless offers and the owner does not have to accept any of them.

  • Violated0

I believe that the IFPI should answer the question of why Demonoid came under a massive and very much unlawful DDoS attack shortly prior to this raid? This I can only conclude seems linked to the on-going massive attack again WikiLeaks which appears much like the United States smiting their enemies.

Anyway this may not be all bad news when amongst the various revenge plans of Anonymous the political activist collective is the more productive goal of bringing Demonoid back on-line where they only need a copy of the site code should a copy exist. Domains would help as well of course.

We have to wait and see what becomes of these battles.

    • Anonymous

Ya these federal criminals do not even hide their crimes anymore.

This time it is only a Ddos but these assholes kill people and blow up stuff too you know. But we are going to fuck up their servers and leak their stuff so bad that they are going to be sorryyyyy!

  • http://profiles.google.com/lulacusao Lula Cusones

if its for selling means that it doesnt got seized by federal agents?

  • Boerenelul

Demonoid died years ago, after the real Deimos left/wasn’t seen anymore.  Years before the change to the .me domain.

    • Time To Retire

True this was the right time to go.

  • Thomas Wolf

O lost and by the wind grieved, Demonoid come back again…

  • Mwhahaha

Sad as it is, sites have died before and things have moved on. Demonoid was great for odd bits and pieces, but they appear to have gone :(

What you need is a site which lives everywhere and a list of the new magnet links each day can be downloaded as a torrent, rather than an old fashioned server based site which is open to raids, DDOS and arrests.

Quite how that would work I’ve nowhere near the expertise to figure out, but centrally held data is not the way forwards. A free platform, dispersed with multiple copies with no central host or staff, one that is crowd policed might be the next step.

    • xpmule

you mean like KAD on eMule ?

      • Winny

        Or Limewire pirate edition?

    • jntlesnev5o7zysa.onion

Seems to me you are asking for something that already exists but is way underused.

Freenet – A Distributed Anonymous Information Storage and Retrieval System.

Now i wouldn’t want to share files over Freenet as it is too slow, just like TOR. But, it’s a great place for a torrent site to become practically untouchable…

Just like The Pirate Bay is reachable over TOR ( jntlesnev5o7zysa.onion ) , more torrent sites need to start using Freenet, TOR and i2p to keep themselves safe. And instead of bittorrent, if people were using GNUnet to actually share files, the MAFIAA bosses would become so frustrated they would hopefully all have massive heart attacks and we could just get on with sharing culture and information.

    • Gear

Remember tyhe heady days of the first incarnation of Suprnova? That was a great torrent site until it went shit.
You are right though, things move on. We will all have a similar site we will use much more now and then we will remember Demonoid fondly but it’s hardly worth getting too upset over.
I still cry over CENTROPY never doing any more releases LOL

Hey why not simply just start uploading those rare Demonoid exclusives onto other trackers such as thepiratebay?   Isn’t the whole point of this that you cannot kill P2P?  Simply pops up in another form?

    • PUTT@

i agree with you but its difficult to gather that demonoid community at single place :(

    • xpmule

this has been going on all along anyway

  • Emmettgulley80

The domains ARE NOT FOR SALE!!!! Some idiot decided to be cute and faked this BS.  For those of you are aren’t in the know, you can easily check with network solutions and others and see clearly that the demonoid domains are not up for sale.

It seems kinda strange that the domains would go up for sale this quick after being busted. it’s even stranger that there is still a criminal investigation going on.

Bottom line: The demonoid domains are NOT up for sale and someone faked this BS

    • Fantastic

also don’t forget that only the first report talked of a raid that has been refuted by the hosting site and that all the stuff is still in the hands of Demonoid staff according to the host.

Demonoid is a invaluable source for books, audio books and comics.  We, as consumers MUST BOYCOTT BUYING ALL THEIR SHITTY PRODUCTS to teach them that they can’t fuck with torrent sites. But sadly many are going to buy them anyway :/

I’ve just tried the Dragon-Torrents site and I’m very suspicious of it. Even if its legit, it seems kinda fucked up on the code end of things. I’m gonna sit back and watch everyone elses experience before I give it another go

and thats why you should always use private trackers (lol I feel like Ive said that a billion time during the last 5 years still people go “no piratebay is the best or demonoid blah blah” when the simple fact is that they say so because they have yet not obtained an invite to a real private tracker and must defend the site they use as if it was a choice they made to rather use public or semi public then private, no my friends forget about public trackers, the freedom of america has ruined them all and will continue to do so until those old greedy bastards die and young fresh minds take over, patience young paduans)

    • Rxpfcrmb

       Oh puhlease.

I was on torrentleech but then found out that everything they had was published already on blogs or public trackers.

But don’t let me shutter your illusions.

Keep believing that private trackers are best (lol) bro

      • http://twitter.com/technosoul Chris

published previously?  Not in my experience.  They deal in only “scene” approved releases.  TL is hands down the fastest and IMHO best tracker.

        • LiveFreely

Scene approved releases are available outside of private trackers believe it or not.

Virtually every scene release appears on cyberlockers, and those links are posted on blogs and forums, within minutes of pre.

Literally minutes after a TV show airs, the scene release of it is all over the place outside of BitTorrent altogether.

    • Blah

Not everyone gets invites to private trackers. Why don’t you be proactive and offer a few invites instead of posting self-centered comments.

I’m still trying to figure out what was wrong about Demonoid in the ”Law’s” eye, it was just a week ago when I decided to download Terminator 4 because I have never wached it before and I fan of the series. So what would any human being do, I ask you?  Go out to your local shops (which might not have it)  pay a sum of £10 or £20 on Blu-Ray….go home and watch it once, stash it on your collection of ever growning dvds… or just download it and watch it almost instantly – making your £35 internet monthly bill wroth it?

I had a feeling a while ago.. like I knew that demonoid was so good (no ratio upkeep, amazing torrent selection, decent uptime) that it wouldn’t last forever. I sucked up as much as i could.. filled up 2TBs.

But my friends, from time to time, brands need to be refreshed. So I predict that the demonoid name will be retired, but the data will be migrated to a fresh new site.

If you are reading this and want to share information, keep in touch, feel free to email me at pythonista(23)at g male

until then, its private torrents with a headache to maintain ratios. Ideally I’d like to just share full hard drives via direct FTP  or something

it seems that, demonoid.me is not for sale yet…but its offline…might be its a last hope..

  • Mr. Phil Sharer

“…close a business that was built on the abuse of other people’s rights.” – Jeremy Banks.

    Mr. Banks,

How are vinyl rips, old radio recordings, and radio show rips infringing on other people’s rights? A lot of Demonoid’s music/audio content represented a preservation of music culture rather than an infringement upon copyright. Demonoid and other sites are more like libraries than havens of criminal activity as you suggest.

Also, you seem to think that filesharing relates to lessened profits for your industry. No, that is not correct. The reason your profits might be lessening is primarily because of failing economies around the world, but also because your industry is by and large producing vacuous, meaningless noise that people are unwilling to buy because they see the “product” for what it is, a product that sounds like the same contrived, derivative work of a million other items that came before it.

How has it become the standard in your industry that strictly electronic, computer-derived sound constitutes musicianship?

How has it become the standard in your industry that every pop singer should use artificial trills in their voice and sound “black”?

How has it become the standard in your industry that advocating low morality is acceptable?

How do you justify this to be marketable, legitimate, and good?

Do you expect anyone beyond the age of mindless “tweens” to pay for this garbage? I don’t even associate with it when it’s FREE!

    Regarding the closure of Demonoid…

Do not be dismayed for one moment dear friends because the majority of uploaders will just transfer their torrents to other sites. I know several prominent uploaders on Demonoid who have already done that. If KAT ever went down, I would just relocate to h33t or some other site. On and on it goes. Our sites and sharing represent global libraries and should be upheld with the most adamant determination.

Here is a tip for everyone…

When you upload, try to include your username or a special code in your torrent title so people can always find your torrents no matter which site you relocate to. For example,

    “Great Torrent – x264 AAC – Wongoman”

    • Truth

      Don’t be a lying douchebag.

If all Demonoid had was old, out-of-print stuff then they would have been left alone.

But that’s now how it was, was it?

You’re not fooling anyone and being a liar guarantees you failure in life.

      • Yeah…Whatever

Be real “The Truth”, they wouldn’t have been left alone even with the out of print stuff by the powers that be, because the criminal syndicate would have wanted their blood money, no matter what. They can hang onto their IP rights for decades, if not centuries now, thanks to American IP law. And the people who are making the money on this intellectual property are not the artists themselves.

Those who side with the industry think that the pirates are screwing them out of their money, when it’s really their corporate masters who have been leaving artists and creators broke even before piracy even existed. What were the excuse of artists before piracy came along and they weren’t making a living from their music. I can name artists before piracy came along like Little Richard, Kenny Rodgers and others who made bad deals and got screwed over by the record industry.

Fact: most artists don’ t even make money from record sales, it’s from touring and selling items like t-shirts to their fans. Hell, they don’t even make money from ITUNES, it’s .11 cents (if that) and the record companies make .70 or more off the mp3, and it’s not even a high-quality lossless file, which means even if you pay the price, you’re still going to get screwed because your file won’t even sound great on a stereo, and you won’t be able to make copies to save the file on other devices without the DRM.

Not only that, you’re limited to their crap selection of artists. I’ve found out about so many independent, good artists thanks to sharing. They get no airplay and no commercial time and aren’t available in my country thanks to the Record industry who only promote crap artists who they shove up our asses. The thousands of dollars in money that I’ve spent on records and books, only to get screwed by finding out that there are only one or two good songs, or the song I liked wasn’t on the record, or that the music was lip synced, or a book that contained plagiarized or made materials (I  like Jonah Lerher…but yeah, still screwed, as were thousands).

No refunds or checks or I’m sorry are offered for these screw ups. Not even an exchange, since after you open it, it’s yours forever. Corporations have been screwing the people and continue to screw us over.

Your choice of name with the word “The Truth” seems more Orwellian doublespeak if anything else.

One of the reasons Demonoid was so good for books was the index. I wish other sites would learn from this.

You go into a bookshop and you brose under headings, you often have no idea what exactly you want.

Most sites can’t even be bothered to differentiate between audio books and non audio, or even the language.

You know the sad thing I would gladly pay to upload from the Demonoid book library. I am sure there are many others who feel the same. It was an eccentric place populated by enthusiasts.

  • Persephone

I’m also extremely saddened that Demonoid may be gone for good. The last time it was down for months I checked in daily and find myself doing the same now. It was my go to site for books and comics and now I’m just at a loss.

The King is dead, long live the King.  The “authorities” can take down one site as much as they like and for six months they will have the illusion that they have solved the “problem” of file-sharing.  Then another site, that has learned from the experience of the former, will emerge, stronger, better able to resist attacks and to attract torrents, and people will once again share music, movies and applications.  Taking down Demonoid is as sad for its members as it is a waste of time and public money.  See the article by Nick Bilton in the New York Times “Internet Pirates will always win”.

  • Santiago Ronquillo

long time ago demonoid was private working with invitation only and complicate to enter for freak us how to enter and rules to share making point to survive with none invitation sometimes and finally for some reason chrome give as demonoid torrent like extension and giving us many speed downloads files like no other torrent world site until last month demonoid stop services.

  • Andrew me

would it not be better for a torrent site to supply a txt file of all torrents updated daily to a software program that could sort them into there own catalogues, maybe have a drop down menu where you could change the txt file to another site, say a private tracker. Then if a site got taken down everyone would still have access to the latest files and trackers. This would be almost impossible to stop and could be used in conjunction with the site only supplying info about the torrents, i.e quality and contents lists etc. Seems like a simple way to resolve the issue me feels, then all a site would need to do to be back up would be to update the mail servers.
Yes there would be ways to hack into the lists and update crap but then again if there was a way to go back to a previous updated list then bar the site from updating.

Imagine not having to worry about going to a site and being tracked going there or participating, because not only could they deny even having links to torrents they could deny owning the used used to do the updates.

Hope someone is thinking of doing something like this i would definitely be interested in joining.

LOl imagine if someone like me can think of something like this , with the millions of programmers out there trying to do something to stick it to the MPAA . lol i am sure there are much more robust systems already in use.

Current movies are awful pieces of CGI garbage. Because most dopes out there have bad taste in current movies and shit music and cant wait for dvd rip torrents of them and because Demonoid was too stupid to put them on their site is why they’re gone. Face it.. you lost Demonoid cause you wanted hollywood swill batman, spiderman and justin bieber cds. That’s Pathetic.! There were a lot of collectors and educators like myself who depended on the rare material on there that no one cared shit about going after to shut it down. Demonoid would have been left alone had it not posted current hollywood swill. If they ever come back, please pressure them not to have that garbage on again unless you like it in which case just keep your net flix account and wait for it to come out you jello mold of a soul.

Chrizmo, why don’t you run for Komissar of what should and shouldn’t be uploaded to Torrent sites. I’m sure your choices will be better than anything the rest of us may choose to upload.

As an academician you may find that [Gibbons] The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire makes for juicy reading, but damn, after 30 pages I had to put it down and watch the movie. Tastes are fairly subjective.

I agree that Biebers music sucks, but a boatload of 13 year old female downloaders may not.

For the demonoid users, please upload and share your files at the pirate bay website. We may or may not see demonoid back up and running again because of the stupid asses from the recording industry and the crooks from the governments around the world. See you all at the pirate bay! I sure hope that demonoid will be up and running with better servers and security protection with more manpower and financial resources. Love Demonoid, no matter what happens. Great people behind that site.

  • foff

I have yet to be convinced any demonoid information is correct.  If the site was going to be busted then who the fuck attacked the site and why?  It does not make any sense.  I have yet to see an independent confirmation of an investigation.  Mexico barely knows what the fuck internet is, there is no way they could investigate their way out of a paper bag on this one.

I have no way on knowing if demonoid will return but sharing did not end with supernova or any other site that has gone away, megaupload and filesonic or fileserve going away did not end the cyberlocker community.  So demonoid gone will not end anything.

What is needed is is an independent service that could keep these libraries intact so when a site goes away either by choice or otherwise a new site can be quickly resurrected.

    • LiveFreely

Interesting though, we have no confirmation yet that anyone really has been arrested, do we? We have rumors that the raid rumor was just a rumor.

Now the domains are for sale, if they were arrested would the domains not be held as evidence? Maybe not if someone else owned them and maybe that person is cashing in against the wishes of the admins?

Could the owner/s of the noid be building a defense fund? or have they intentionally created a lot of hoopla and hype to cash in and sell the domain? if the later then are they planning on disappearing to the beach for life or using some of those funds to setup something much bigger and better?

So many questions. Will we ever know the truth?

Because Mexican police activity is not really organized with the Teutonic efficiency of countries where this sort of thing is more familiar.

  • tmc8080

Why all the silence and mystery? With all the US investment in the Americas is it any surprise that you can’t concievably run a torrent site from North America and escape being a target by copyright groups? After TPB takedown, it’s alot easier to convince countries that tackling pirates should be the same as tackling terroists and their safe havens such as asset forfieture and bank account seizure must be the same (albeit illegal part of due process).. You have to be a savvy sob to keep puling one over on these copyright mafiaa’s. Apparently, some of the top-10 current crop are not upto the task.. that doesn’t mean that Demonoid won’t get replaced with another site..

As I said, and can all-but confirm they are serious about doing something else big before the end of the year.. so key playas better lay low and protect their assets well.. if they’re earning revenue from their sites, even for the hosting fees/donations (even if the result is non-profit status)… stuffin’ it in the mattress just isn’t good enough, baby!

  • Halfheat

I’m a little surprised with the demonoid users and fans, just because the site may be down doesn’t mean its dead, every single one of us is still left standing as a community if your home is destroyed what do you do, you don’t just say fuck it you rebuild what has been damaged and make a new home of your own, if the site isn’t brought back then I think we the die hard demonoid fan base needs to step forward and bring are site back, after all its the users that make the site. The way I see it demonoid is just to great let fade away, even if the site never comes back I’ll remember the name Demonoid and its lovable green mascot till the day I die.

Lol those industries, in a lot of countries in this world such as mine it’s too easy to buy pirated cd/dvd either movies, musics, e-books, or cracked softwares /with serial number. Only about US$ 1 for cd or US$ 2-3 for dvd.

Sellers are available in almost every traditional markets in all towns in whole my country. As well as being sold online in almost all our largest forums.

All softwares, all musics, all movies. Those sellers just go to nearest original cd/dvd rental, copy them including the cover, then duplicate & sell. For pirated softwares just download them, burn, duplicate and sell. So easy.

We can also copy whole printed books borrowed from libraries in all photocopy
stores legally (so many B/W photocopy machines by Canon, Xerox, Ricoh,
Selex, Toshiba). Just US$ 1 for about 400 pages.

LOL my country is always in the top ten for piracy award for decades, but who’s care. Lalalalallalla……..

    • Wanta

We’re talking about filesharing here, not selling knocked off dvd’s down the market. Two different things bud.

  • tonyj

Identity theft is a 250 Billion world wide business, but that’s only the visible cost, then there is the true cost on people who are left devastated, lost data and damaged software hardware, the time spent repairing your credit data…etc. It all adds up to 10 fold. That’s 2 1/2 trillion dollars world wide lost to identity theft.

The governments don’t have the people’s best interest at heart, and it seems you have to be conglomerate corporation in order to be heard.

Chasing after the cyber-lockers and torrents sites is like dicking the dog. They go after these sites when there is very little to zero gain, wasting taxpayer money, much embarrassment and very little impact on pirates. You know for damn sure there technology is always evolving, fluid. The bitorrent of today is some new super cool anonymous file sharing application tomorrow.

    Get your priories straight.

    • LiveFreely

      Yes…

…and better, faster, trackers not needed, as anonymous as Tor or better, is coming, it is happening, and when it arrives, the game is over.

The only way to stop the free flow of information in all digital forms, will be to turn off the internet.

When this happens I will still continue to pay for music, movies, and games. It will be awesome, it will be game over, but it won’t be the nightmare copyright holders think it will be. Actually sales of all their goodies will continue to climb through the roof just as they have all through the life spans of napster, kazaa, and blah blah blah.

Plus it will make it so much easier for new independent artists to get massive global exposure for free.

Everybody wins, so everybody just stop hating and enjoy the ride.

I am glad that the Mexican authorities, who are currently barely holding their country together with both hands, facing de facto civil war with the drug cartels, have found enough extra resources to protecting their citizens form the serious and incredibly dangerous criminals who download music on the internet.

    • MikeAlgar42

Well, of course! It is where the big danger to the world is. The big, slightly lighter pocket, danger or some man in America.

    • LiveFreely

Ultimately it is all about power.

With truly free flowing information those who hoard and abuse power cannot continue to do so, therefore P2P technologies that put the control of information in the hands of the people is the greatest threat possible to them.

To them someone sharing a movie is ultimately more of a threat than a terrorist with weapons.

Technology that will hit the internet this year will take the free flowing of information to a level that is far beyond their ability to control and this will have massive sociopolitical impact that will cause dramatic shifts that could not have been predicted only years ago.

True freedom is coming… corruption is finding an environment rising around it that it cannot survive in.

      Things will change.

  • Noneofyobiz

We all know its theft. Music is cheep as chips these days, people still steal it. Worse that the people who run these sites make millions on the back of others work. If it was really about sharing whats all the advertising about…..

    • LiveFreely

       - It is copying not stealing and there is a very big legal as well as dictionary difference between the 2

      - Cheap is relative, $1 a song x 100 songs = $100 whether that is a lot of money or not is purely subjective and based on many factors

      - No the people who run sites like Demonoid do not make millions, not even close, in fact these kinds of sites usually operate at a loss and use advertising revenue and donations to hopefully break even and keep things going. Some tracker sites may make some money but it’s rare and it’s not anywhere near millions.

But this is from someone who happily pays $10/month to get music “legally” through MOG.

      • Noneofyobiz

Cheap is relative but to be fair, we should only buy what we can afford. If an artist spends months working on a track, why should it be stolen? Copying is theft. This is the digital age, wheres the difference? When you pay for it you are buying a copy of the original recording. I can’t understand why torrenters deny this! Call a spade a spade! Music is entertainment. If you torrent it illegally its theft. Where are peoples morals on this? A free internet? What about peoples rights? Just because music is being consumed differently shouldn’t mean the product becomes fair game for theft. I think its sad that people continue to defend the act of stealing peoples work in the name of a free internet.

Also, Pirate Bay sold for 8million in 2009. Money made on the back of other peoples work. Megaupload made millions. These sites most certainly don’t run at a loss.

        • LiveFreely

          - Copying is not theft, downloading from BitTorrent or elsewhere is not theft, in accordance with the letter of the law and the shared meanings of words we adhere to (i.e. the dictionary). If you say it is then you are disagreeing with the law and the dictionary.

          - People who download more tend to buy more, this has been shown. Therefore people downloading puts more money in the pockets of artists. Furthermore artists get literally pennies on the dollar of what their work is sold for by record labels/distributors/etc and various middle men. P2P technologies create a platform that artist can, and will use, to remove those middle men, therefore using these technologies puts more money in the pockets of artists and helps prevent middle men from “stealing” from the artists.

          - The Pirate Bay did not host any files, not a single song or movie. It doesn’t violate people’s copyrights, it literally does nothing more than provide news about what other people are sharing. News services are bought and sold all the time, the value of the sale is often based, at least in part, on the value or success of the service in it’s delivery of news.

          - Megaupload has little to nothing to do with sites like Demonoid or The Pirate Bay. Megaupload was a file host, a massive number of copyrighted files were actually hosted on their servers. However since Megaupload complied with the DMCA and removed those files at the proper request of copyright holders they were not actually in violation of the law, they literally committed no crime, and the law they are accused of breaking (that they didn’t actually break) literally does not even exist in their country.

        • Ophelia Millais

By your own admission, there’s $millions to be made off of P2P-related services. Right there is a business opportunity for the content industry. They could run their own such services or license the ones that other people create. Instant profit with zero actual new creative work needing to be undertaken. That is the way they like to do business, after all…

        • LiveFreely

Another way to say it would be…

“They built a business based on providing news about what other people, not them, were sharing and because they did it well they had lot’s of loyal users who used their news regularly to find the files they were looking for, which made their company worth $8,000,000″

But i dont feel secure at all. Have a feeling that shit will happend.

They could of course keep track of the ratio without logging torrent/tracker details over time. What I have heard is that they got rid of all that stuff in their daily server maintenance. So what could Ifpi do with just an ip number and dl/ul amount? Unless of course you are addressing uploaders specifically, as their own uploads was logged to their accounts.

    THE TRUTH?

Been following all these Demonoid stories here, on forums, etc and I believe that what has actually happened is…

Someone in/close to Demonoid were behind the DDOS and have seized control of the domain names listing them for sale.

    Nobody has been arrested.

    There were no raids.

Demonoid staff and friends are working on getting back control of the domains and getting everything back online.

Everything else is hype and nonsense, or else this, this comment right here, is itself the hype and nonsense.

    You decide, time will tell.

    • Billy

Of course there has been a raid, etc. Interpol has confirmed it…

    • LiveFreely

It’s also possible the domain names are just being sold and the Demonoid is planning on returning under a new domain.

Demonoid has important contents, that is huge amount of files with extension .torrent stored in its database.
Without this important .torrent file no one can share each other through DHT or P2P/tracker or peer exchange.

    and

2 – There were no arrests, as Demonoid staff have said “while Demonoid staff come from all over the world, no staff are in or from Mexico.”

    and

3 – Demonoid staff are working to bring it back online as they have stated.

…what exactly is the IFPI taking credit for? “Mission Accomplished” I guess.

At this point I am wondering just who is making this stuff up?

I somehow doubt that IFPI would issue that self-congratulatory a press release unless they knew full well that they wouldn’t wind up with egg on their faces were Demonoid to return.

      • LiveFreely

You could be right and if you are, I would like to see…

1 – A verified quote from ColoCall or the local authorities confirming the raid.

2 – Official record documenting the arrests in Mexico.

…because without those the whole story that has been unfolding kinda falls apart.

I’d be happy to know one way or the other.

.me is a Montenegro domain extension, so why are the Ukraine (.ua
domain) authorities involved? Is it me or is there something going on
and this is just a smoke screen, or am I becoming one of the internet
          loonies with tinfoil hats?

    • Ferxxccb

       Because of DHT.

      Don’ t you love it?

  • kohlerchrisduschan

I feel for the Demonoid users, but I’m German and so this happened to me years ago, when Demonoid for some stupid reason decided to ban all German users.

There was a time in Germany when there were many lawyers who made a
living off sending cease and desist orders to and collecting fees from
Torrent using pirates, but that time is pretty much over. Two of the
most infamous such lawyers lost their licenses (one committed suicide)
and judges increasingly refused to take such cases, which made that wave
of cease and desist orders from scumbag lawyers pretty much dry out in
    the last year or so.

For some reason Demonoid decided to not let in German users anymore when it still was going on,
even though as far as I know no foreign pirate site owners have been
targeted by German authorities and the fees the caught users had to pay
were all in the 200 to 2000 Euro range. Nothing compared to busted
Americans and Canadians who were sentenced to fines in the 100 000 to
300 000 Dollar range. It was American law enforcement agencies who went
after Megaupload and other file hosts and Torrent trackers, not German
ones. Yet the ban for Germans remained in place while Americans could
still use Demonoid freely. I never understood it.

Quite honestly, this even makes me feel “Schadenfreude”. I knew it would do them no good to shut out Germans but still let people in from the one country which sends its agencies after internet pirates internationally.

I still hope Demonoid will come from the ashes as a Fenix.
Como on guys don’t give up.
I won’t delete my Demonoid bookmark.

BTW you want friendly contries/servers? Then go to Venezuela, Brazil or Argentina; where their governments don’t lick American MPAA & RIAA interest.

This is not about piracy, this is about freedom of choice

  • Joeyp

The site is data and software.  If they don’t have the whole kit and kaboodle backed up offsite and out of harms way they are idiots and I don’t think that they are idiots.  At least I hope the hell not.

Assuming that it exists, we can be sure that like the Phoenix it will arise out of its own ashes in some jurisdiction more immune to heavy handed tampering.

Hmmm, I’m also assuming that such a place exists.  Does it?

Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don’t turn it off! It wasn’t my war! You asked me, I didn’t ask you! And I did what I had to do to win! But somebody wouldn’t let us win! And I come back to the world and I see all those maggots at the airport, protestin’ me, spittin’. Calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me, huh? Who are they? Unless they’ve been me and been there and know what the hell they’re yelling about!…For me, civilian life is nothing! In the field, we had a code of honor: You watch my back, I watch yours. Back here, there’s nothin’!…Back there, I could fly a gunship, I could drive a tank, I was in charge of million dollar equipment. Back here, I can’t even hold a job parking cars!

  • Jellyphish

Just fyi it appears that much of the information here (concerning demonoid at least) is bullshit, conjecture…there are a few better sources out there.

They think this will help? Targeting the torrent sites? Are the authorities really that dense? It’s the internet, what the hell is this going to accomplish? All the torrents that were on Demonoid are being SHARED through computers, taking down the tracker is like killing a single flea on an infested dog.
