Demonoid is Alive, The Tracker Has Returned

Written by Ernesto on November 05, 2009

It has been many weeks since the popular semi-private BitTorrent tracker Demonoid went offline. The site’s owner claimed the downtime was due to hardware issues and warned of the loss of both torrents and user data. Today, however, there is hope on the horizon, as Demonoid’s tracker is now up and running again.

demonoidSince Demonoid went down in September there has been a lot of speculation about what had caused it, and how long it would take for the site to recover.

As always, Demonoid staff kept quiet about the site’s future and all its users could do is wait for a sign of life, which quietly arrived earlier today.

A few hours ago Demonoid’s tracker started to respond again. It appears that it’s still hosted in Ukraine, and although the frontend of the site hasn’t updated yet, this comeback might indicate that the site is preparing for a full return.

The current situation stirs memories of Demonoid’s downtime back in 2007. At the time the tracker also returned before the site itself became accessible again, which took two more months. Many Demonoid members are undoubtedly hoping that this chain of events will complete more quickly this time around.

Demonoid tracker is up and running

demonoid

When the site returns, it’s likely that members that joined the site more recently will have to sign up again, while others may have to resubmit their torrents. “A loss of some months worth of activity including registered users and torrent submissions is to be expected,” Demonoid staff warned earlier.

The tracker’s return in itself is already being welcomed by the thousands of users whose torrent clients are not supporting trackerless torrents. Many of them might have been staring at several unfinished downloads for weeks, and now they are finally able to complete their downloads.

I have Seven IPT invites up for grabs send me your info to tenderroni53@yahoo and it’s yours all I ask is that you leave a rep point when you sign up and seed as much as you can you will get kicked off

40 Nov 05, 2009 at 22:30 by @_@

@Fat

Trust me, it’s better to have these lamers stick to the public sites.

Especially since they probably couldn’t keep a ratio on the private sites anyway. Also, them going to private sites => more publicity for private sites => private sites get taken down.

Lets leave it to the TPB and Demonoid guys to get sent to jail, eh?

41 Nov 05, 2009 at 22:37 by eskudo

Im a member on IPT and I didnt receive an invite, if you want to get in just donate

42 Nov 05, 2009 at 22:40 by SomeGuy

@41

What’s the URL of IPT?

Clearly, this site is operating an illegal filesharing network in the hopes of turning a profit.

Hopefully it can be arranged so that the site is dealt with ASAP

:)

Thanks!

43 Nov 05, 2009 at 22:43 by liquidmonkey

hopefully they have fixed their ratio updating issues, otherwise no go.

44 Nov 05, 2009 at 22:46 by an0nymous

“i was hoping for no return thus forcing people onto decent trackers (e.g. private)”

Regardless of whether a particular tracker is ‘decent’ or not, don’t forget that it’s supposed to be all about the sharing – Not little elitist cliques tucked away in the corners

Public trackers FTW – The more there are the better the sharing will be

45 Nov 05, 2009 at 22:47 by Jonnykill

@40

so people are lamers because their isps charge alot of money for bandwidth and they cannot afford to seed 1:1?

46 Nov 05, 2009 at 22:49 by Who?

Good news!

54 Nov 05, 2009 at 23:48 by mustangx

I hope they get out of that datacenter ASAP. We have been there 3 weeks and have nothing but issues with their network and hardware. The people are very nice and try to be accommodating I won’t trash them for that, but it’s easy to see what happened with Demonoid, our servers crashed so many times we have developed site bugs ourselves due to it. Best of luck to Demonoid getting things all back online.

55 Nov 05, 2009 at 23:49 by nightspark

I think Demonoid is one of the (if not the best) torrent sites. I am a Demonoid user and have a share ratio of 4:1 (users of public trackers do share) so all you elitist snobs can stay on your private trackers (waffles, kind of like oink). Your sites are just a likely to get busted as any other.

It’s a real pleasure to upload there.

66 Nov 06, 2009 at 02:13 by Zarathustra

Demonoid beats the crap out of all of these “private” trackers. You guys need to get over yourselves. I’m a member of quite a few private trackers and most of them blow. They don’t have the selection, or seeders. What private trackers do have though is a douchey attitude and a lot of bullshit rules

71 Nov 06, 2009 at 03:37 by nightspark

@57
Maybe you should learn to read. Here let me explain to you. I said that private trackers were just as likely to get busted. In other words both public and private trackers are fair game.

In the eyes of the RIAA and other anti-P2P groups you and I are just thieves. If I were you I would get off my high horse.

72 Nov 06, 2009 at 03:56 by TdoubleU

Its not back for me yet. Still says its going through maintenance.

73 Nov 06, 2009 at 04:02 by Anonymous

I went to some mid-level general private trackers (TL, RevoTT, ScL and such). They got good pretimes and nice speeds, but I was very disappointed with the content: its the same shit you can find just everywere else. I think its all about comunity. The only private sites I really like are those with the most active and experienced members, friendly rules and little faggotry: then people will seed and donate.
Of course this may sound obvious to many but I assume most people here hasn’t got into dozens of private trackers.

Zarathustra said,

AMEN, brother!

I recently tried uploading a seriously schlocky sci-fi film to a private tracker, complete with my outrageously funny description, which one member described as the funniest movie description he’d ever read.

So what to the nitwit moderators do? They delete my much-loved description and replace it with the totally inaccurate, grammatically poor, misspelled description from IMBD!

When I complained, they couldn’t offer one good reason for such stupid behavior. Way to take all the fun out of sharing movies with people.

I told them that their policies make me long for the return of the greatest bit torrent site out there:

DEMONOID!

84 Nov 06, 2009 at 06:32 by You!

I’m glad Demonoid is back. I’ve been a user of Demonoid for a couple years and its suited my purposes just fine with alot of the torrents with plenty of seeders. I don’t understand where these “private tracker” users get off by saying Demonoid sucks. What it comes down to is your purpose for using it. I’ve talked to alot of “private tracker” users and they’ve all been pretty stuck up just because they are privy to a “private tracker”. Who gives two *****, a tracker is a tracker as long as there’s no viruses, decent amount of seeders, and a good selection.

85 Nov 06, 2009 at 06:56 by FlightSuit

Private tracker = limited selection.

They’re just fine if you’re looking to download the latest episode of your favorite TV show or the latest Hollywood mega-blockbuster.

If however, your tastes run toward things that aren’t so mainstream, nothing beats Demonoid.

Good sign! Although I’m a private tracker “snob” (meaning I like speed) I find myself returning to Demonoid time and time again for hard to find titles. They truly do track some rare and unique content and got me started on non-public p2p.

Demonoid is every bit as private as all the other so called private trackers and I challenge the naysayers to prove how it’s not.

Login? Check. Ratio? Check. Invites? Check. Often closed to new members? Check. Pretty much anyone can join when registrations are open, including those who work in law enforcement? Check. Friendly, helpful community? Big fat check!

Yup, I just don’t see what some of you elitist snobs are whining about.

That last point I listed was probably the absolute best thing about Demonoid. Members were always willing to comment regarding the quality of a torrent and help those in need. This helped a great deal when trying to find that one perfect diamond in the rough whenever a popular new release showed up, such as new versions of Photoshop, Windows, and so on.

Demonoid also tended to have a lot of stuff all the other sites either don’t or are very shoddy at keeping up with, like comics and properly done FLAC rips (for the love of God, no more crappy MP3’s please!).

Private? Public? Doesn’t matter. It’s all good when the ultimate goal is sharing. Remember, sharing is caring! Do your part by seeding something today!

Not to be nitpicking, but the demonoid admin is quite the lazy amateur, I mean honestly; A hardware problem should never take this long to solve. And the website is still showing the same old ‘excuses’. A regular backup-scheme is easy to setup too.

I invested a lot of time and effort in my account and uploading through demonoid over the years, but they don’t really award you or care much, apparently. TPB has been more faithful and rewarding in that regard, I must stress. Private torrenting is nonsense, if you ask me.

By the way, TPB is half-down from here again. Overloaded databases? No wonder everybody runs to TPB if all the others are slow cowards.

110 Nov 06, 2009 at 16:28 by drmike

The tracker was up and down for a few days after the site when down. When things come back fully, we can start saying it;s a comeback.

It’s up now for me. That is a good sign.

And the private vs. public trackers folks need to get a life.

111 Nov 06, 2009 at 16:32 by SomeGuy

Here let me pick apart your post.

1. Login – Unlike private sites logging into Demonoid is not mandatory, access to torrents can still be had.

2. Ratio – Ratio at Demonoid, unlike a private site, is not strictly enforced due to dynamic Ip’s.

Invites – Ok both utilize an invite system.

Closed to new members – Nope. Demonoid is closed to non members, not new members. If they were a member they would just log in!

And here’s probably the most important point – internal & external trackers are found and utilized at Demonoid. This makes it one of the largest torrent sites on the net.

@joliverio Please review the post and the comments. The tracker is back up, the site itself is still down.

123 Nov 06, 2009 at 19:08 by Gonzobot

I honestly don’t understand why anybody would use a client that didn’t support dht. Look at Demonoid – it has been gone for months, again. Why would you sit for weeks on end looking at a download not finishing, rather than getting a client that isn’t crippled without a tracker constantly holding its hand?

µTorrent 2.0 comes to mind. Installing the beta for that thing seemed to entirely sidestep my ISP throttling – a full meg a second for BARBIE MOVIES. YMMV. I loves it.

124 Nov 06, 2009 at 20:16 by happy

@Gonzobot; because they have a lot of ebooks and a good search engine for ebooks

LMFAO why are people sayin demonoid.com is back online.

NO DEMONOID IS NOT BACK ONLINE YET!!

Take a look for yourself http://www.demonoid.com

……….Maintenance……….

The site will return as soon as possible, but there was a problem that caused data loss and the person who can help us get the data back is not able to help at this moment. The site will return when we can get his help

A loss of a some months worth of activity including registered users and torrent submissions is to be expected because the backup we are hoping to get back is not up to date, so please be prepared for it.

133 Nov 07, 2009 at 00:35 by NoOne

Why demonoid.com admins do not use internet providers in counteries that have no law about file sharing and demonoid.com-like sites.
In countries like my country, there is no limitation on any unauthorized use of any digital thing. (music, movie, game, software, etc.)
So the maximum cost of any software, movies, music and etc. costs copy or download it.
Isn’t internet providers in such these countries the best choice?

140 Nov 07, 2009 at 03:18 by TorrentSpy not dead

@60 Nov 06, 2009 at 00:25 by Anonymous

@57

You fail.
Mininova is up, TPB is up (most of the time), Demonoid will be back.
If you had said “…sites like TorrentSpy….”, sarcasm would have been achieved, although only barely.

It doesn’t really matter, TorrentSpy’s database, torrents, and most of the files themselves have been copied and are alive on the web @ 1gb per second. Fkk the mafia!

You just have to know where to look to find torrentspy. Yes it is still called its original name but its under a different url that then says torrentspy. The difference is instead of the torrents being copied, the whole site was copied along with almost all of the files themselves which is a big fu to the cartels.

No worries dudes… I have reserved two invite codes in my email and it’s here. I will share one for you:

I intentionally hide the two characters to keep your critical mind working about prob&stat and get the two digits.

[Clue: one is numerical and other is phonic.]

Hopefully it’s a sign of good things to come. The return of the best torrent site on the net. I don’t care if they are a public or private tracker, who gives a shit? We are all doing the same thing, U/Lng & D/Lng. And it’s “Free”! Who gives a shit? And did I mention it’s “Free”!!
Peace…..

Why are people asking for, and posting, invite codes here? An invite code is of absolutely no use if there’s no Demonoid site on which to use it!

And as of this moment, there still is no Demonoid site.

150 Nov 07, 2009 at 18:29 by anonymous

i wonder if the people posting invite codes know that they expire 2 weeks after creation

151 Nov 07, 2009 at 19:13 by e-tard

Doesn’t excluding anonymous users from a tracker defeat the purpose of file-sharing, more specifically pirating? I have a utorrent ratio of over 4.0 with terabytes uploaded and got sick of private trackers long ago. If I decide I want to share something, it goes on ThePirateBay and Demonoid, for anyone to access. Though I remain on one private tracker, I wish for their hypocrisy to end. I wonder why public trackers frighten some guys? “OMG zeese userz dont care enough to create an account!!!” I wonder how many of you who get their news online subscribe to an account with them. Excluding people doesn’t make you safer or more elite. It breaks up a global community into factions, not helping the greater community one bit.

152 Nov 07, 2009 at 20:06 by filevortex

*sigh* say it isn’t so :( insecure trackers like this are not needed, and neither is publicity about their return, can’t wait to see the DMCA notices starting up again, thanks for giving the lawyers a place to jumpstart their business demonoid :(

153 Nov 07, 2009 at 21:24 by me

If they get back, I hope they’ll open public registrations at least for a couple of days — as a kind of welcome back gift. I’ve been waiting in vain over a year to register, and I’m really optimistic this time to get a chance (yet not ruling out being disappointed again).

Zarathustra and e-tard are hella right.

Private trackers are for complete fucking idiotic paronoid noobs.

You get no benefit of being in private tracker besides dictator-esque admins and dictator-esque rules. The very philosophy of exclusion of members is an affront to actual file-sharing. If you have that much exclusion than you definitely have issues when it comes to sharing.

I can say Demonoid will hands down beat any damn torrent site in existence. They have a really great community, great admins, and unique and superflous content unlike private torrents sites where the only they have are movies. I dont give a damn if the RIAA or MPAA is watching I get all my movies from a safer source anyway. Also, the pre times arent that good when you compare it to usenet and XDCC.

SO all you private site lames ….get a fuckin life. You wish you had an invite to demonoid. You dont have 1/5 of the content demonoid has or a loyal base. Deez Nuts

156 Nov 07, 2009 at 22:47 by msm

I read these responses just to see the wankers who need to tell everyone about their super-hunky private tracker memberships and slam Demonoid (or TBP or whatever).

If your private tracker memebership gets you off, then why don’t you toddle on over there pleasure yourself, hmm?

Otherwise sit down and shut up. If I want your opinion about Demonoid, I’ll give you one.

160 Nov 08, 2009 at 01:17 by ANONYMOUS

While Demonoid is a good tracker it is not the best. IMHO the best comes from multiple private tracker accounts. A private HD tracker, a private music tracker, and a private general tracker will suit all your needs. Private trackers are MORE secure than public/simi-private (TPB/Demonoid), and they have new content available faster than non-private sites. Good private trackers also have a good retention rate (ie they keep the old content seeded). If public trackers do it for you good. If private trackers di it for you great. Do what’s best for you. No need to make this in to a competition.

164 Nov 08, 2009 at 03:24 by Anonymous

@159 Re: “No need to make this in to a competition.” Then why are you making it into one? Why go on about how you think private trackers are better? Read what you wrote.

I’ve been on over a dozen private torrent sites and I’ve yet had to keep an account over a week. They never have what I want, seeding and speeds are horrible, and many of them are run by admins with either chips on their shoulders or sticks up their you know whats. Last week I quit a private torrent site where the admin was down right racist.

Folks who brag about any tracker, private or private, are usually looking at the popular or 0-day torrents. There’s a lot more out there than just what’s popular.

165 Nov 08, 2009 at 04:59 by Anonymous

Do list the name of the tracker wherein you use a Communist term, “racist.”

Perhaps you should invest in an actual education.

166 Nov 08, 2009 at 05:10 by FlightSuit

Seamus McG @147, THANK YOU! You just made my day! Is Seamus McG also your username on Demonoid, or do you go by a different handle there?

167 Nov 08, 2009 at 05:29 by be-eye

demonoid is by far the greatest torrent site in the history of torrent sites. I was very depressed when this happened last time, and its sad that a website has such a hold of my life…or maybe not

168 Nov 08, 2009 at 06:44 by Seamus McG

FlightSuit I am MrGristle4!
And by the way I can not get the theme from Green Slime out of my head. Its even on my pod now.LOL
See ya soon on the ‘noid.

169 Nov 08, 2009 at 06:55 by nah in bmore

Fkin TF and its stupid comment moderation system. Who the heck cares about a couple of cusswords. Screw this Im going to AfterDawn.

170 Nov 08, 2009 at 07:07 by Seamus McG

The things about Demonoid that make it such a great site is the variety of content that you can find there that you just simply can NOT find anywhere else. And the commentary from members. Some of the comments are downright entertaining to say the least.

Members are also more than willing to help out if you have questions or problems. The few “private” sites I looked at were all snobbish and insulting. Never again.

I have to agree with #44 up there that its about sharing, not hording your your stuff and only letting people with mega upload speeds into your private playground.

Not everyone has great upload speeds and can maintain some of the ridiculous requirements FORCED upon you, much like what the MAFFIA are doing to us now.

Myself I only have an u/l speed of 40kbps and yet I had at last check a ratio of 2.3 or 2.4 if I remember correctly. It takes me longer than would be “allowed” on the private sites to achieve these numbers. No problem on the ‘noid though.

And to you trolls out there try and track me when my IP changes regularly and behind VPN.

To all my Demonoid family out there greetings and happy sharing.

Oh look my IP address just changed again. See ya!

171 Nov 08, 2009 at 07:20 by Seamus McG

On a side note, I just finished watching the “US Now” video from VODO.

A very good story that the trolls should watch. No, never mind it would scare them too much and have to hide their heads in the sand.

Everyone else though should watch it, pretty interesting stuff.

172 Nov 08, 2009 at 08:19 by macchugsid

I have been a member of Demonoid for years. I am also a member of some private trackers. I still go to Demonoid when I want something obscure and hard to find. That is what got me started to begin with. I waited for quite some time to catch an open registration. I am quite stingy with my invites also. I am really glad to see them coming back. I went through this with them before and I just kept checking back. One day I got an email from them saying they were back. They have always been my go to tracker. Great to hear they are coming back.

173 Nov 08, 2009 at 09:37 by Rick

I’m not sure what private trackers some of you guys are using but I’m a member of Demonoid and a bunch of private trackers and have a different experience.

I use demonoid for lower quality rips and private trackers for more obscure content, most of the content on demonoid can be found elsewhere where as the private trackers I use each specialize in specific types of content such as high bitrate or lossless music, HD movies etc.

Demonoid sure doesn’t have the amount of obscure music as What? or the quick releases of TV shows that bitme has for example.

Demonoid also has a higher hit and run ratio overall especially due to it’s broken ratio system. Overall it’s a good site to find a wide range of materiel but a combination of a few private trackers is much more effective in finding obscure content while avoiding slower speeds.

As for those with slower connections, seedboxes don’t cost that much and by purchasing one no matter what site your using public or private you will be contributing more to the torrent community.

178 Nov 08, 2009 at 20:41 by ctk

people are saying that the stuff you found on demonoid is pretty much the stuff you find anywhere else. or that demonoid is nothing really special. i disagree.

name me one other torrent site, public or private, that has the large and diverse collection of audiobooks in its database. i haven’t found it yet, and i doubt it exists.

oh and speaking of private sites, i was a member of one long ago and i asked for something to be reuploaded or simply reseeded. know what i was told? “go look on demonoid”. then the owner started spouting off what i know now was a bunch of bullshit saying that demonoid got raided and the way to keep yourself safe was to delete your account. he also said that they didn’t care about you at demonoid like they did at PGAC.

then there’s the kicker: i got kicked out simply because the site admin changed the way people logged in and sent the instructions by e-mail, my e-mail got corrupted and sent to spam and when i asked for the information again, i got it and was then promptly banned several hours later because he arbitrarily decided that (after the fact) anyone who contacts the admin about login problems would simply be banned. so you know what? i’ve been at demonoid where requests got answered, items reseeded, and the people are much nicer. if demonoid is a place where “they don’t care about you”, point me to a place that does.

185 Nov 09, 2009 at 02:42 by paul

what is the actual tracker because i replaced some of my torrents with the ones they suggest on the site but i want the original one.

I put in http://inferno.demonoid.com:3410/announce and it says that the torent is deleted or removed from pool?

186 Nov 09, 2009 at 04:15 by jon7272

to 176 i was talking about iptorrents not the the pirate bay you moron im yet to get viruses on iptorrents so get your facts right

187 Nov 09, 2009 at 04:27 by and by

@paul
If you are trying to add that to some random torrent it won’t work. It must come from the ‘noid and the number in the tracker is specific to when it was uploaded. So if you don’t know what it was originally then you are just sol.
Sorry.

And @jon7272
It occurs to me that maybe they have got that virus that seems to have crippled Ukraine. Or do you just depend on your governments controlled media output for your news? Try doing a google on “Ukraine virus” and tell me how many western media sources do you find? Interesting to say the least.

And no I’m not talking about a computer virus, before you get your knickers twisted any tighter.

ok ive read the ukrain swine flu thing its concerning but whats that got to do with demonoid being online or not you have lost me lol

195 Nov 09, 2009 at 19:10 by and by

Well jon7272 where are the Demonoid servers located? Maybe they just got sick is all I’m saying. Maybe because of the way things are there its harder to get things done. The Ukrainian government has even quarantined some areas. Maybe they can’t even get to the servers right now. I don’t know for sure but try to think outside of the box you have apparently locked your mind into.

And as far as what does it have to do with you in Aussie land, well sick people can travel on airplanes you know. And your government might try to force this contaminated vaccine on you as well.

Don’t be so narrow minded, I have quite a few Aussie and Kiwi friends so I know they are not all like you.
Good on ya mate.

@ jon7272
Fair enough, I retract the narrow minded thing. Quarantined people yes, but not ones that might have been exposed and not in a quarantined area.

Anyway it was just a thought. I’m probably completely wrong and its simply just internal issues. They really should put more info out here for their loyal fan base. Its only common courtesy.

207 Nov 10, 2009 at 06:35 by and by

And @ darren cock

208 Nov 10, 2009 at 21:03 by nah in baltimore

@173

I dont know what you use but that whole post I disagree, with except for the High TV rips like in 720p 1080p…I agree alot of that shit isnt as numerous on there. There are some….but then again the majority of users arent trying to download 10gb worth of data for one episode. So in that respect it would make sense to have a dedicated private site to that. Everything else you said is bullhockery. I’ve seen tons of FLAC and EAC ripped popular albums on demonoid.

@179

You are a complete idiot. I swear. viruses…man what an idiot.

Edit: There are some rumors about the site shutting down for good and we starting a new tracker next year. the rumors are of course, lies. There are no plans of shutting down or creating another site.

And there is NO official twitter/facebook/any other web community page for Demonoid. There are a few around that were created by fans and have no link to the site or staff.
The parts of the site code that got deleted are being rewritten and should be ready soon. We are also working to try and minimise the data loss as much as possible.

Thanks for your patience.

——————————————————————————–
The site will return as soon as possible, but there was a problem that caused data loss and the person who can help us get the data back is not able to help at this moment. The site will return when we can get his help

A loss of a some months worth of activity including registered users and torrent submissions is to be expected because the backup we are hoping to get back is not up to date, so please be prepared for it

Since I haven’t said my part and am a huge demonoid fan with a recorded 2.2TB uploaded to that tracker (5.1 ratio), I must say I really hope it comes back online soon so that I may upload more torrents to it. I also hope the downtime didn’t affect my ratio too much, I like to brag about my ratio once in a while, lol.

Demonoid fan 4 life (or for as long as they don’t get bought out by legual crap like other websites)

No sweat. Thats what the ‘noid community is about. Sharing and caring. When they come back and if you have questions or issues be sure to check the forums. People there will give a helping hand. Though, sometimes there are the rude, ignorant people, just ignore them.
Its not worth the trouble acknowledging them.

i miss demonoid . it was my sunshine on a rainy day and then my rainbow. I was a newbee and happy. And then in one foul moment i pressed a button to log on and it was gone. Taken away from me but hopefully not for ever. Until demonoid returns i have to settle for mediocrity . but i have faith they will be back completely so i wait.

Hi y am whont to aply to youres to the family

WFT people – Demonoid was doing open signups on Fridays (before they went down).

Public is way better than private. That’s the entire idea of 2P2 – public sharing. The entire idea of private trackers for stealing files is stupid funny.

Demonoid (and sites like Mininova) prove public sites work.
