Demonoid Is Back Online

Written by Ernesto on April 12, 2008

Yesterday, we reported that the popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid was to be resurrected, under a new administrator. Now, less that a day later the site has made its comeback after exactly 6 months of downtime.

demonoidA message posted on the Demonoid frontpage confirms that Deimos, the former administrator, left the Demonoid staff. The site seems to be working properly, as does the tracker, but there could be some downtime in the next few days. All the people who had an account at the time the site shut down can still sign in with the same username and password.

The resurrection of the popular BitTorrent traffic marks the end of a tough year for the site. The trouble for Demonoid started back in June last year, when the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN started to put pressure on Demonoid and their ISP, Leaseweb. Deimos decided that the Netherlands wasn’t the safe haven it used to be and he to moved the site to Canada, which resulted in a few days of downtime.

Deimos never really told the administrators or members of the site exactly what was happening. Initially, most members assumed that there was some hardware failure, but after a few days it became clear that Demonoid was more or less forced to move. Maybe there could have been hardware failures too, who knows, but the outcome was the same - Canada here we come.

Relocating the servers to Canada initially solved the problems, but, by the end of September Deimos took Demonoid offline for the second time. Again, nobody knew what was going on until we found out that the CRIA was responsible for the downtime, which was later confirmed by Deimos. It turned out that Canada wasn’t the best choice after all.

After 5 days of downtime the site returned, now blocking all traffic from Canadian users in an attempt to calm down the CRIA. At first it looked like the storm was finally over, but on November 9th Demonoid’s users were welcomed by a disappointing message on the frontpage explaining that the CRIA was indeed responsible for the downtime.

The site never came back after November last year, up until now that is. Let’s hope it lasts this time.

I just received an email from demonoid announcing their return and confirming that my account is still active….as wonderful as this news is why am I uneasy about receiving the email (with my account name)?

Can anyone confirm or deny this is a trap or going to be highly monitored? Which i believe is going to happen.

Sounds very dodgy to me, i was a member though i never really used it much more of a Torrent Leech man myself but this does smell like a trap, it wouldnt suprise me if the MPAA of RIAA have bought the domain and now plan to track users…..a situation i will keep a close eye on and wont touch with a barge pole.

UHA! Finally back…we missed it =)

Can’t be a trap. The accounts are working and the torrents and posts and everything else are there. If it was the MPAA, why would they need you to log in, if they already have all the database?

Anyone thinking there’s any safety whatsoever that a server is in Ukraine, is very foolish.

http://www.mfa.gov.ua/usa/en/1560.htm

55.

Interstate

Treaty between Ukraine and the United States of America on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters

ie: You can be prosecuted in the US for breaking US laws, while using something in Ukraine. It’s a legal obligation, much like if the server is in Canada, or London, or any of the other countries the US signs a routine agreement with to prevent criminals from hiding out in foreign countries.

I’m not saying the site is now a honeypot, but saying it isn’t is a little ignorant of how things could work. Law enforcement would much rather have “fresh” active connections to monitor in a supervised and controlled environment rather than attempt to dissect and enter into evidence potentially fake/misleading/obstructed logs that are seized. It’s much easier to prosecute someone if you used a honeypot, rather than if you just busted a pre-existing illegal service.

I’m not going anywhere near it, but that’s just me.

i just don’t feel safe when a site goes down and comes back all of a sudden. imho the site admin could be just a puppet of the copyright protectors. wouldn’t you hang a few thousand if it would be you would be free? im gonna wait this out for a long time. i don’t go to supernova just for that reason.

i love demonoid. it was the best site ever. i logged in automatically when i went to the page - i want it to be like it used to be - but i have a nagging fear its a trap.

You mean the pirate bay is a MPAA puppet?

Suprnova is owned by the pirate bay, you know…

1 If they wanted to prosecute, they can use the database for that.

2 Providing the illegal service themselves is entrapment, and that is illegal.

3 More importantly, they OBVIOUSLY can NOT bring the site online themselves and risk being sued by the copyright owners of some other stuff being shared there. For example, there are copies of windows vista being shared there, what do you thing Microsoft would do if they knew the MPAA is sponsoring a tracker that is being used to share illegal copies or their software?

What about Marvel comics? DC? Apple? Etc

C’mon people, It’s obviously not a trap, think!

im not trying to be a kill joy, but u dont know that for sure. saying i thought in a court of law aint gonna cut it. i hope its not a trap. i love that place!
