Demonoid Is Back Online
Written by Ernesto on April 12, 2008Yesterday, we reported that the popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid was to be resurrected, under a new administrator. Now, less that a day later the site has made its comeback after exactly 6 months of downtime.
A message posted on the Demonoid frontpage confirms that Deimos, the former administrator, left the Demonoid staff. The site seems to be working properly, as does the tracker, but there could be some downtime in the next few days. All the people who had an account at the time the site shut down can still sign in with the same username and password.
The resurrection of the popular BitTorrent traffic marks the end of a tough year for the site. The trouble for Demonoid started back in June last year, when the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN started to put pressure on Demonoid and their ISP, Leaseweb. Deimos decided that the Netherlands wasn’t the safe haven it used to be and he to moved the site to Canada, which resulted in a few days of downtime.
Deimos never really told the administrators or members of the site exactly what was happening. Initially, most members assumed that there was some hardware failure, but after a few days it became clear that Demonoid was more or less forced to move. Maybe there could have been hardware failures too, who knows, but the outcome was the same - Canada here we come.
Relocating the servers to Canada initially solved the problems, but, by the end of September Deimos took Demonoid offline for the second time. Again, nobody knew what was going on until we found out that the CRIA was responsible for the downtime, which was later confirmed by Deimos. It turned out that Canada wasn’t the best choice after all.
After 5 days of downtime the site returned, now blocking all traffic from Canadian users in an attempt to calm down the CRIA. At first it looked like the storm was finally over, but on November 9th Demonoid’s users were welcomed by a disappointing message on the frontpage explaining that the CRIA was indeed responsible for the downtime.
The site never came back after November last year, up until now that is. Let’s hope it lasts this time.

Dolt #2…
Woot I’m back and I’ve given invites to people who matter so weeeeeeee

Dolt…
Wow, I’m impressed by your counter-arguments!
What surprises me is that they needed all this time to decide on this, to host in the Ukraine, and then somehow nobody worries about what happened in Canada, nobody worries about the collected proof on ALL its registered users. If the FBI would want it, they could try and pursue each and everyone of them, as long as it is in their power. A demonoid profile is quite revealing; It tells you what the user uploaded, and its IP-address. How secure do you feel with that?
Of course, you can say “who cares” and go about your half illegal business, but don’t say it doesn’t have a strange smell to it.
Lemme explain just why you’re a dolt:
“They” (Deimos) didn’t need “all this time” to decide where to host, etc. He’s had a grim last half a year in RL, & had to put Demonoid on the back-burner while he dealt with such.
Also, what the hell are you on about with your “collected proof” FUD? As they say: PPOSTFU.
Thirdly, the only “strange smell” I can discern is emanating from the horse-puckey plopping outta your ill-informed, tinfoil hat-wearing pie-hole…
Absolutely fucking glorious.
i have 2300 invites for sale … a dollar each … please buy … i need a new mac laptop
Even if these conspiracies were true, simply logging in wouldn’t put you in danger. I’m sure Demonoid’s IP logs are still preserved anyway, and if they weren’t, logging in wouldn’t prove that you downloaded anything. It would simply prove that you knew the log-in information for that account.
And Canada has been becoming more lax on file-sharing, they no longer prosecute file-sharers, but rather the people who host BitTorrent trackers and the like. And given the sheer amount of members and the nature of Demonoid(You don’t even have to be a member to use the tracker), worrying about this is silly, especially since nobody has been prosecuted after the much bigger takedown of OiNK.
That being said, Demonoid is still just a public tracker with invitation only membership and meaningless ratios, and although I can be happy for the all people who missed it these past few months, I personally don’t care that it’s back.
you are wrong on every point
logging into an account verifies your IP and identity and the logs they have on you
you have to be a member of demonoid to upload there
the owner of Oink is under prosecution
Demonoid is a private tracker because it uses a ratio to track member’s sharing activity
the ratios are far from meaningless because they give the site the ability to log all your sharing activity
i do care that it is back because i am getting $500 per member that i give the logs to the greedy Americans our new business friends

it’s good but it’s so fucking small. 15 thousand torrents compared to demonoid’s 90 thousand
logging into an account verifies your IP and identity and the logs they have on you
This would never be sufficient evidence in any court room, having the log-in information to an account does not prove that you downloaded nor uploaded anything.
This is the case with many other public trackers, The Pirate Bay for example.
the owner of Oink is under prosecution
Perhaps this is the only exception, but they’ve had to extend Alan’s bail several times. This is irrelevant however, because while the owner of a BitTorrent tracker should only expect some legal channels to give them a hard time, none of the members from OiNK have been prosecuted. OiNK had a substantially smaller community of people who no doubtfully shared files on a regular basis. If they’ve had no trouble to date, it would be ludicrous to suggest Demonoid members would.

While you can debate whether or not Demonoid is a “private” tracker, this is one of the worst arguments you could have used. They don’t have ratio requirements(which means anybody can generate invite codes), and you don’t have to be a member of the site to use the tracker. The most popular torrents on Demonoid are generally external, so I would hardly consider Demonoid a ‘private’ BitTorrent tracker.
The ratios are mostly meaningless, apart from ‘bragging rights’ on the Demonoid forums. There is plenty content that is legally distributed on Demonoid, without a snatch list, ratio logs are scoffed at. If Demonoid has preserved the ratio information for each account, they have preserved the IP logs when the members created the account.

If you are going to troll, at least be clever about it. Perhaps some of the people here will fall for your poor trolling attempt, but I definitely won’t.
Needless to say, I’m sure there are people out there grasping at their tin-foil hats as we speak, so I suppose my post does serve a purpose.

we have grown by 5000 torrents in the last month and a half, and we have a unique security system, AND WE OWN OUR OWN SERVERS, WE WONT BE SHUT DOWN LIKE DEMONOID WAS. I still have my “D” account, I have deleted all my old DHT enabled torrents, and I have lots and lots of invite codes. But I have LOST MY FAITH IN DEMONOID, THEY HAVE LET ME DOWN TOO MANY TIMES IN THE PAST. I will keep my account open, it was too hard to get, but I will NEVER upload there again. Sorry, h33t is my new home.
yeah!!!!!!!!!!

Everything about that site is annoying … from the completely invasive advertising to the crappy animated icons.
logging into an account verifies your IP and identity and the logs they have on you
They can’t log what you download. Your download is between you and the peers and seeds, the tracker doesn’t see it.
Demonoid is a private tracker because it uses a ratio to track member’s sharing activity
It’s a public tracker because anyone can download its torrents.

That site is annoying, the admin is very stupid.
You go to it and the first thing you see is a bunch of annoying animated things that do nothing important.

Let you down? They’re trying their fucking hardest to make a great site.
This is great weekend news :)

the point is my greedy Ukrainian friend … the point is you never get to a court room in the USA because it will cost you $250,000 to start
you must pay the $20,000 cease and desist letter to avoid going to court
we have the American system in our hearts
Za Vas America! we make good business now
i do not trust the Russians
the Ukraine are the worse MAFIAA
why you think they dont sell your logs to American racketeers? you gotta be deeply stupid to use that site

Really? I’m just being careful.
No, you’re being studily naive.
Quite the opposite, rather. I don’t think you have any idea who you’re dealing with. If comments are waiting for approval, and then don’t appear, something is wrong. That has nothing to do with ‘errors’. I maintain several wordpress-driven sites myself.
Also, I have an account at demonoid, a real old one, and it clearly STILL shows me the IP-address I used, plus the torrents I’ve uploaded. Each one of them. Trust me: It’s quite an incriminating profile you’ll have there, if the uploaded data is or can be made incriminating for you. As soon as you’re logged in, seeding your own uploads, if it’s not free to share, if it’s not considered authorized, many countries can file a lawsuit with those facts just like that.
Believe me, I know ’cause I’ve been there. YOU are the stupid naive one here.
Yesterday, I was so happy Demonoid.Com was here again
I uploaded a Sims torrent
I live in Michigan
Today I receive a demand from a law firm in Michigan saying i must pay $15,000 for copyright infringements
I have 3 young girls and I do not know what I am going to do

NOT. You’re a newbie. I’m clearly more in the know about these matters.
We’ll talk after you’ve been fined or enjoyed some jailtime over uploading something that wasn’t considered yours.
You’re like one of those muggers in the park. Namecalling will not impress me. They’re a sign of (your) weak arguments.
ohhhhhhhh im damn happy that its bak again
