Demonoid Is Back Online
Written by Ernesto on April 12, 2008Yesterday, we reported that the popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid was to be resurrected, under a new administrator. Now, less that a day later the site has made its comeback after exactly 6 months of downtime.
A message posted on the Demonoid frontpage confirms that Deimos, the former administrator, left the Demonoid staff. The site seems to be working properly, as does the tracker, but there could be some downtime in the next few days. All the people who had an account at the time the site shut down can still sign in with the same username and password.
The resurrection of the popular BitTorrent traffic marks the end of a tough year for the site. The trouble for Demonoid started back in June last year, when the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN started to put pressure on Demonoid and their ISP, Leaseweb. Deimos decided that the Netherlands wasn’t the safe haven it used to be and he to moved the site to Canada, which resulted in a few days of downtime.
Deimos never really told the administrators or members of the site exactly what was happening. Initially, most members assumed that there was some hardware failure, but after a few days it became clear that Demonoid was more or less forced to move. Maybe there could have been hardware failures too, who knows, but the outcome was the same - Canada here we come.
Relocating the servers to Canada initially solved the problems, but, by the end of September Deimos took Demonoid offline for the second time. Again, nobody knew what was going on until we found out that the CRIA was responsible for the downtime, which was later confirmed by Deimos. It turned out that Canada wasn’t the best choice after all.
After 5 days of downtime the site returned, now blocking all traffic from Canadian users in an attempt to calm down the CRIA. At first it looked like the storm was finally over, but on November 9th Demonoid’s users were welcomed by a disappointing message on the frontpage explaining that the CRIA was indeed responsible for the downtime.
The site never came back after November last year, up until now that is. Let’s hope it lasts this time.

logging into an account verifies your IP and identity and the logs they have on you
This would never be sufficient evidence in any court room, having the log-in information to an account does not prove that you downloaded nor uploaded anything.
Worse, it proves that you UPloaded unlawful copied material (at least in many cases it would). Being the logged and validated source of an upload does stand up in court, precisely because after your Ip has been logged, it can be separated from the millions, traced, watched, monitored at will. ISPs do this by the hundreds, they tap your line, they track your traffic habits, and they are forced to log it all if the law requires it from them.
In my country (The Netherlands) one can be sued quite easily over unlawfully uploaded data from a home-IP. There have even been some usenet-uploaders caught (and fined) recently, purely based on IP-address info.

I am also very scared. My grandchildren they visit me every weekend and they use my computer to download mp3’s for their players.
Their mother does not allow it at home in Buffalo but how can I say no I am their Grandma.
It is now so uncertain I am afraid and I am considering banning the children from the internet. It is no longer safe.
Please help me, what is the best way? How can I preserve the freedom of the children while I protect the the family from the MAFIAA?
VICTORY AT STALINGRAD!!!!

My dick is so hard right now.
It is the best news of the year.
I am so glad, demonoid is best.
i do care that it is back because i am getting $500 per member that i give the logs to the greedy Americans our new business friends
{snip}
the point is my greedy Ukrainian friend … the point is you never get to a court room in the USA because it will cost you $250,000 to start
you must pay the $20,000 cease and desist letter to avoid going to court
That’s right! If you use Demonoid, you’ll end up losing *at least* $20,000!! Also, it’ll give you brain cancer and make your penis fall off!!!
I wonder, dickhead, could you make it any more transparent that you’re a cocksucking little MAFIAA toadie? You even put “MAFIAA” in your own name. What the fuck were you shooting for with *that*, some kind of irony?
You get an F-.
I don’t think you have any idea who you’re dealing with.
If he thinks he’s dealing with a MAFIAA plant, then *no*, he has an extremely good idea of who he’s dealing with.

If comments are waiting for approval, and then don’t appear, something is wrong.
Something is wrong, all right. Torrent Freak has a buggy comment system. I’ve submitted comments only to be told they’re “awaiting moderation”, then immediately resubmitted the EXACT same comment only to have it posted instantly, just like normal, without setting off any sinister red flags. Go spread your puerile FUD elsewhere, slut.
Believe me, I know ’cause I’ve been there. YOU are the stupid naive one here.
“Stupid and naive” is far more preferable than being a shameless whore that the MAFIAA trots out to seed alarmist bullshit designed to steer people away from legit BitTorrent trackers.
Yes, I’m referring to you.
I’m clearly more in the know about these matters.
Of course you’re more in the know about this, numbnuts. You’re the one making it up.
We’ll talk after you’ve been fined or enjoyed some jailtime over uploading something that wasn’t considered yours.
We’ll talk after you’ve had the MAFIAA’s dick surgically removed from your mouth.
Or, like removing a Facehugger, would that just end up killing you?
Namecalling will not impress me. They’re a sign of (your) weak arguments.
No, sweetums. Namecalling is, in this instance, a sign that you’re the human equivalent of a rectal cyst.
How can I preserve the freedom of the children while I protect the the family from the MAFIAA?
You can, and this goes for every MAFIAA plant, go hug a speeding bus.
Also, I have an account at demonoid, a real old one, and it clearly STILL shows me the IP-address I used, plus the torrents I’ve uploaded.
Demonoid can log what .torrent file you upload to the site, BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN YOU UPLOADED ANY COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL :)

You don’t have to worry. The chance anything bad will happen to you or your grandchildren is so very small, the worst that can happen to you is you might in a rare case get a letter from your ISP about downloading something (but that’s usually for really popular new movies).
YAHOOO!

Yeah! Torrents 1 and MAFIAA -1. My ratio is crazy though on Demonoid. It says I uploaded 200 gb and downloaded 42gb. I guess it pays to be loyal. Thankyou Demonoid!
This is the best news I heard after long time

Even if these conspiracies were true, simply logging in wouldn’t put you in danger. I’m sure Demonoid’s IP logs are still preserved anyway, and if they weren’t, logging in wouldn’t prove that you downloaded anything. It would simply prove that you knew the log-in information for that account.
And Canada has been becoming more lax on file-sharing, they no longer prosecute file-sharers, but rather the people who host BitTorrent trackers and the like. And given the sheer amount of members and the nature of Demonoid(You don’t even have to be a member to use the tracker), worrying about this is silly, especially since nobody has been prosecuted after the much bigger takedown of OiNK.
That being said, Demonoid is still just a public tracker with invitation only membership and meaningless ratios, and although I can be happy for the all people who missed it these past few months, I personally don’t care that it’s back.
you are wrong on every point
logging into an account verifies your IP and identity and the logs they have on you
you have to be a member of demonoid to upload there
the owner of Oink is under prosecution
Demonoid is a private tracker because it uses a ratio to track member’s sharing activity
the ratios are far from meaningless because they give the site the ability to log all your sharing activity
i do care that it is back because i am getting $500 per member that i give the logs to the greedy Americans our new business friends
Za druzhbu myezhdu narodami!
The ratios are meaningless. Because for one thing they are not accurate. I had a terrible ratio before they shut down. Now If a 4 ratio with 200 gb up. I have never uploaded more than 50 gb. how about that? Ratios would never hold up in a court of law.
it not private anymore you can download even if you are not a member
Wow nice, old login still works. Hope they stay back for good this time.
any chance of an invite i aint one of those fudge packing leechers
it not private anymore you can download even if you are not a member
Not completely true.
