Demonoid Returns, Forced to Block Canadian Traffic By the CRIA

Written by Ernesto on September 30, 2007

The popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid is back online after nearly a week of downtime. The website and the tracker are hosted on the same ISP, but Canadian traffic is blocked thanks to pressure from the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA).

On the Demonoid frontpage we now read:

We received a letter from a lawyer representing the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and we need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience.

Demonoid.com ReturnsThis confirms our earlier reports this week, and show that the CRIA was indeed responsible for the downtime. It’s been a controversial week and at times emotions were running really high. In the absence of any official announcement it was really hard to separate fact from fiction, with rumor and counter-rumor.

The bad news of course is that Demonoid is now unavailable to Canadians. Unfortunately it is not the fist time an anti-piracy organization effectively shuts down access to a part of the BitTorrent community. Earlier this week Isohunt had to ban US users from its trackers, and last month TorrentSpy blocked access to US users, both by pressure from the MPAA.

At the time we write this article, the forums are still offline, but it probably wont take long before these are back online too. The first sign of Demonoid’s return came yesterday when the trackers started responding again.

When an avalanche of upset Demonoid users came to TorrentFreak this week, the mood was grim when not only their site disappeared but also doubts were cast on our report. We aim to be a credible news source and understand the responsibility we have in the BitTorrent community. While understanding how Demonoid’s Canadian users must be feeling right now, it’s great that we now get the chance to share in the relief of the majority of Demonoid’s dedicated userbase.

The second most popular BitTorrent tracker on planet earth has returned, that’s the most important thing.

Update: Demonoid is having some problems again, this message now appears: “The latest changes to the site are giving us some problems - We’ll be back soon”

THIS IS UNFAIR!
I suspect that Demonoid’s Canadian user-base may not take this lying down.

A great number of members and prolific seeders of Demonoid reside in Canada.

Remember that when your torrent takes 10x longer to complete.
And YOU need to remember that this is not the fault of Demonoid or It’s owners/operators….

While this sucks if anyone would like to shoot an invitation over to woomba at gmail.com it’d be really appreciated :)

I appreciate TorrentFraek’s news on this matter the whole past week. They were the ONLY ones who seemed to investigate this matter. Deimos the owner REFUSED — REFUSED — REFUSED to comment and no other staffers were allowed to.

In spite of that blockage, TorrentFreak got it 95% right. It was the CRIA who was responsible for Demonoid shutting down. Demonoid staffers said this was not confirmed, but refused to confirm or deny it anything else. YET IS WAS TRUE. Bunch of liars. Again they had surrogates in IRC chat lie for them that it was “hardware problems”. Hardware problems don’t take a week to solve!

We are not idiots and this is an age of global communications — blogs, cell phones, texting, email. A week of silence is unacceptable. And so is a week of lies by Demonoid. TorrentFreak got ti right. At least right enough.

Demonoid is the #2 torrent site in the world and we are expected to be concerned when it goes down. How about “We’re having some issues we can’t talk about but we’ll be back.” SOMETHING.

you’ve handled the assholes that called you a liar quite tactfully.

For all the Canadian Brothers here, use a proxy that is based in another country(US or other). This was you’ll still be able to use Demonoid. ;)

All you need to do is to download Tor proxy and then you can download torrents from Demonoid. You won’t be able to sign into your account if you’re from Canada but you will be allowed to download a few torrents a week as a guest :-)

How about NOT tossing around rumors? How about NOT allowing posters to assume the identity of other posters? How about NOT posting things that you DON”T KNOW FOR SURE are true? Demonoid does not owe any of you anything. Do you pay for the service? NO….quit bitching….

If you live in Canada than maybe you can reach the site through an anonymous proxy !!!

I’m so happy that Demonoid is still up :D

36 Sep 30, 2007 at 19:49 by DemonoidIsBACK

Back up and already one server busy message. Demonoid should *really* shut off their invite system. Especially since the CRIA notice turned out to be true, and the high levels of negativity towards Demonoid and its users.

Amazingly, all the seeds to my torrents never left, they kept going even though the tracker was down.

Canadians could just use a socks proxy, or tor in utorrent or azureus.

38 Sep 30, 2007 at 19:50 by ehmjay

can anyone suggest some good proxies for us Canuks - although im concerned that they’ll block us in the tracker too so it wont matter.

im glad to hear demonoids back (for everyone else) but crushed that we got screwed - which I dont quite understand… why just block us?

if only they were like Piratebay and said “nananananana”

41 Sep 30, 2007 at 19:53 by kornfan

demonoid doesn’t seem to be back up at all…nor the forum

42 Sep 30, 2007 at 19:53 by Bobs my uncle

Does the CRIA even represent any Canadian music labels, I thought they all pulled out of the CRIA?

43 Sep 30, 2007 at 19:54 by Bobs my uncle

proxy.org has tonnes of proxies for Canadians. learn 2 google folks.

44 Sep 30, 2007 at 19:56 by ScytheNoire

i send there will be a movement away from using Demonoid. time for them to move, or die off.

45 Sep 30, 2007 at 19:56 by Proxy

Demonoid uses an antiquated system whereby the IP address you login with is the one the tracker records for ratio purposes. So unless you proxy your BT traffic, you’ll be dead soon.

If they were smart they’d switch to a keybased system ala piggy site and many others.

46 Sep 30, 2007 at 19:57 by Missy

i feel sorry for the ppl that donated from canada.. i think demonoid should return there money .as they have rolled over and blocked canada from getting on there

47 Sep 30, 2007 at 19:59 by Qwhacker

that complete BS. There is no law being broken by demonoid, as there are no laws against demonoid. I’m wicked surprised/pissed they didn’t fight it

48 Sep 30, 2007 at 20:00 by Marty

Gah… That sucks… Oh well… At least we’re not getting our asses sued (i’m canadian)

Thanks a lot to the torrent freak team for keeping us updated and informed while this matter unfolded. Thank you, also, for any future efforts to keep the community of users, and the supporters of bit-torrent and p2p in general informed as legal issues surrounding copyrights and distrobutin unfold and evolve.
This is a difficult topic to get ballanced news on, certainly, and it is nice to have a voice on the side of the community/consumer.
While I am glad Demonoid has returned, I was never truly concerned. If the bif “D” goes down, then something would have taken it’s place, it really is that simple. Time is the only thing needed for new evolutions to occure, it is the way of things.
I think the community, tho, has a responsibility, clearly, to build.
Build infastructure to support itself should this happen again to make painless transitions in the future. Be aware that headaches and battles are not over, and worse things could yet come our way. So prepare.
We, as a community cannot bicker and whine while influential giants are steadfastly working hard to stop us. Net neutrality is a joke (for instance comcast users cannot seed outside of the comcast network…the protocal has been blocked, not the sharing of copyrighted material, why is this allowed?), and “they” won’t stop until they either loose their ass or we do. It is that simple.
Regardless, having a few central sights that consume the majority of interest in the BT community is dangerous to the stability of that community.
