Demonoid Returns, Forced to Block Canadian Traffic By the CRIA
Written by Ernesto on September 30, 2007The popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid is back online after nearly a week of downtime. The website and the tracker are hosted on the same ISP, but Canadian traffic is blocked thanks to pressure from the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA).
On the Demonoid frontpage we now read:
We received a letter from a lawyer representing the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and we need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience.
This confirms our earlier reports this week, and show that the CRIA was indeed responsible for the downtime. It’s been a controversial week and at times emotions were running really high. In the absence of any official announcement it was really hard to separate fact from fiction, with rumor and counter-rumor.
The bad news of course is that Demonoid is now unavailable to Canadians. Unfortunately it is not the fist time an anti-piracy organization effectively shuts down access to a part of the BitTorrent community. Earlier this week Isohunt had to ban US users from its trackers, and last month TorrentSpy blocked access to US users, both by pressure from the MPAA.
At the time we write this article, the forums are still offline, but it probably wont take long before these are back online too. The first sign of Demonoid’s return came yesterday when the trackers started responding again.
When an avalanche of upset Demonoid users came to TorrentFreak this week, the mood was grim when not only their site disappeared but also doubts were cast on our report. We aim to be a credible news source and understand the responsibility we have in the BitTorrent community. While understanding how Demonoid’s Canadian users must be feeling right now, it’s great that we now get the chance to share in the relief of the majority of Demonoid’s dedicated userbase.
The second most popular BitTorrent tracker on planet earth has returned, that’s the most important thing.
Update: Demonoid is having some problems again, this message now appears: “The latest changes to the site are giving us some problems - We’ll be back soon”

Yep - the Tor proxy / Vidalia works jus fine! It slows down browsing a lot, but then it comes wit a button that installs into firefox to quickly enable / disable it. So u only need use it when yur going to demonoid.
Glad to see Demonoid up and running again. But why this hatred against Torrentfreak??? Sure, basing information on rumours is a bad thing but sometimes that’s the best you can do.
I think that the article clearly stated that no information was available, but an educated guess based on so-so information said that it might be CRIA.
No matter if that was the truth or not, I still got the news that Demonoid was down. For me, that’s roughly all I need. The rest can be found by snooping around the net. Torrentfreak posted some info, as did other sites. On the whole it gave me a pretty good picture of what was happening.
I never trust any source to 100% without checking the facts first. God could have a blog/newssite and I still wouldn’t believe the facts unless I could verify them. So stop blaming Ernesto for giving false/bad information. Be thankful for the good job he actually does.
I for one find Torrentfreak one of the best and most reliable sites out here. So keep up the good job and don’t let a few brainless twits get to you. There are still quite a few of us who appreciate your site =)
Are these Demonoid fanboys crazed 13 y.o. boys?
Torrentspy said CRIA was responsible for the downtime, and it turns out they were. Torrentspy was right, fanboys were wrong. Get over it.
All this ‘the admin is has a real life and is too busy to respond’ crap. How long does it take to write a response. About 5 mins? He wasn’t too busy to block off all of Canada.

Do you know the date of the summons? No? Then it’s *still* conjecture.
“The second most popular BitTorrent tracker on planet earth has returned, that’s the most important thing.”
It would be better if it returned to Canada as well. i do agree that this is just going to help with the promotion of DHT. I am sick, though, of these evil organizations crying foul just because nobody is buying from their brick and mortar outlets. If they had a decent online alternative, many wouldn’t go to the torrents in the first place. Oh, wait. The crap they produce is usually not being shared on bittorrent.
thank god!!!!
YES!
long live demonoid!!!
Demonoid rocks, also to a comment i seen, torrentspy for USA residents is http://www.torrentreactor.to. new site same stuff for us residents
I guess what this ultimately proves is that you can’t trust the word of the user on this site who goes by “Sabin1981″. At least Ruzteroid/Demonoiders made no speculation-as-fact statements. In their “Announcement” section anyways.
And, Ernesto’s original source has been validated to some degree.
Nice to see “The D” is back up.
I wonder why Demonoid is blocking Canadian IPs only? Could it be so that they won’t violate Canadian privacy laws when they provide logs to the record industry? Demonoid may have sold out. Watch your backs America.
Well that sucks. Here I was laughing at my friend because he couldn’t use TorrentSpy any more.
“Hooray! and God Bless America! Canada’s anthem should be changed from O! Canada to Doh! Canada!
eh?”
Canada is the reason you can even use Demonoid. And the CRIA is the association that represents your precious country in Canada.
And where do you think all of your piracy comes from?
Well I live in Canada and I just checked the site and it gave me this:
“The latest changes to the site are giving us some problems - We’ll be back soon”
So it looks like demonoid will be back up for everyone :D

have you actually read the articles about this, it appears not
One More Reason we should Invade Canada………..

I appreciate TorrentFraek’s news on this matter the whole past week. They were the ONLY ones who seemed to investigate this matter. Deimos the owner REFUSED — REFUSED — REFUSED to comment and no other staffers were allowed to.
In spite of that blockage, TorrentFreak got it 95% right. It was the CRIA who was responsible for Demonoid shutting down. Demonoid staffers said this was not confirmed, but refused to confirm or deny it anything else. YET IS WAS TRUE. Bunch of liars. Again they had surrogates in IRC chat lie for them that it was “hardware problems”. Hardware problems don’t take a week to solve!
We are not idiots and this is an age of global communications — blogs, cell phones, texting, email. A week of silence is unacceptable. And so is a week of lies by Demonoid. TorrentFreak got ti right. At least right enough.
Demonoid is the #2 torrent site in the world and we are expected to be concerned when it goes down. How about “We’re having some issues we can’t talk about but we’ll be back.” SOMETHING.
How about NOT tossing around rumors? How about NOT allowing posters to assume the identity of other posters? How about NOT posting things that you DON”T KNOW FOR SURE are true? Demonoid does not owe any of you anything. Do you pay for the service? NO….quit bitching….
If you don’t want rumors tossed around, then COMMENT for the record. If you don’t, then don’t go crying when “rumors” — WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE ESSENTIALLY TRUE, make their way to the public.
You have cell phones, e-mail, every form of communication known to man. Who was hurt by these rumors? Nobody — AND THEY WERE TRUE, if I didn’t mention it before.
@Truthsayer
Be wary of passing judgement based on nasty comments by Sabin1981 — his name was getting stolen on here yesterday and people were pretending to be him
Well, thank you torrentfreak, and fuck you Demonoid.
I’m a little puzzled as to why the Demonoid would bow down and take it in the rectum from the CRIA. Compared to the US, the legalities of downloading are pretty slim here.
“The latest changes to the site are giving us some problems - We’ll be back soon”
Thanks for the explanation and shit-faced lies Demonoid. If they’re drinking the piss of the CRIA for gods sake, it’s only a matter of time before they’re down and out for good. Way to put up a fight.
Ok, unfortunately I visited the site and saw the “We received a letter from a lawyer representing the CRIA…” message. But then refreshing it about 10 minutes after and no longer saw the canadian users blocked messge. I saw this message:
“The latest changes to the site are giving us some problems - We’ll be back soon”
I don’t know if this means that they are no longer going to block the canadian users or if they are just giving a new status to when demonoid will be back online.
Either way, as a canadian demonoid user, this TOTALLY blows goats!! I am really pissed with the CRIA it’s a huge loss for demonoid!
Please ignore my above statement.
I Eat Cocks.

Excuse me? I stated, many times, that we would be back up. We WOULD be back online. That wasn’t speculation, it was the truth. Did we or did we not come back up?
As for the LENGTH of downtime, I still stand by my original statement - hardware. Why? Because do you really think it takes FIVE DAYS to block IPs at the server-level? I think not.
*shrugs*
I was right, you people just don’t like that. What else is new? :P
I wish everyone would stop flaming Demonoid for blocking Canada. Nobody knows exactly what was in the legal notices so NO THEY MAY NOT HAVE HAD A CHOICE!!! And isn’t it better to cut off the foot to save the leg? If you live in Canada get a proxy work-around and be happy again!
if the citizens of Canada are not good enough to use the site… then why should Demonoid still be allowed to host their site in our country!
Used to have respect for the staff…. but now they need to grow some balls instead of screwing all the Canadian users who have stood by them for many a years.
Unrelated question…
Is utorrent 1.7.5 recording ip’s?
If so, what torrent client do I use now?
Thanks..
So, Ernesto has blocked me from posting in defense of our site — but allows people like the above to continue to flame and attack?
I was right from the start. Ernesto, you’re nothing but a rumour-mongering, immature, waste-of-space child. This blog isn’t informative, it’s pathetic.
My response is awaiting moderation, but I’ll bet it never gets it. Strangely enough.
