Demonoid Returns, Forced to Block Canadian Traffic By the CRIA

Written by Ernesto on September 30, 2007

The popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid is back online after nearly a week of downtime. The website and the tracker are hosted on the same ISP, but Canadian traffic is blocked thanks to pressure from the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA).

On the Demonoid frontpage we now read:

We received a letter from a lawyer representing the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and we need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience.

Demonoid.com ReturnsThis confirms our earlier reports this week, and show that the CRIA was indeed responsible for the downtime. It’s been a controversial week and at times emotions were running really high. In the absence of any official announcement it was really hard to separate fact from fiction, with rumor and counter-rumor.

The bad news of course is that Demonoid is now unavailable to Canadians. Unfortunately it is not the fist time an anti-piracy organization effectively shuts down access to a part of the BitTorrent community. Earlier this week Isohunt had to ban US users from its trackers, and last month TorrentSpy blocked access to US users, both by pressure from the MPAA.

At the time we write this article, the forums are still offline, but it probably wont take long before these are back online too. The first sign of Demonoid’s return came yesterday when the trackers started responding again.

When an avalanche of upset Demonoid users came to TorrentFreak this week, the mood was grim when not only their site disappeared but also doubts were cast on our report. We aim to be a credible news source and understand the responsibility we have in the BitTorrent community. While understanding how Demonoid’s Canadian users must be feeling right now, it’s great that we now get the chance to share in the relief of the majority of Demonoid’s dedicated userbase.

The second most popular BitTorrent tracker on planet earth has returned, that’s the most important thing.

Update: Demonoid is having some problems again, this message now appears: “The latest changes to the site are giving us some problems - We’ll be back soon”

Taken straight from the Demonoid Fora as the reason the site went down
What no one wanted to admit to, was the fact that the hamster which powers Demonoid died, some people have claimed it was due to the hamster being over worked. Now before you get on your high horses, the results of the post mortem are not in yet, so speculating on the actual cause of death at the moment would be counter productive, however early results point to old age as the most likely cause of death.
Looks like a reasonable explanation to me, also show’s why the staff were reluctant to speak, they were in mourning and didn’t want any false accusations being made about animal cruelty until the post mortem results were in. Given the frenzy for info here as well as the mis info who can blame them

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!

And that, dear friends, is why I love Demonoid :) The nay-sayers on here may hate us, but that’s only because people like that aren’t welcome with us. As for the rest? Our community is strong, happy, helpful. Not vindictive and destructive.

Phew…..hope Demonoid is back on line soon. I want my torrents.

@Yoda

Don’t forget; Demonoid is a tracker, but our torrents end up on almost ALL the normal “list sites” (aka, Isohunt or TorrentSpy and TPB)

If there’s anything you need, you can still browse those sites and download the demonoid-tracked ones :)
the problem for demonoid is the global moderator SELURNATAS aka Pete a well known anti-p2p agent who is informing on every move made by Demonoid
Ha, now that’s funny XD

I’m sorry to say (actually, I am not sorry :D) that you are a complete idiot.

Sabin is a well known member of the Red Army and he is a world class figure skater, even competing in the 1492 olymics on the moon, though loosing to Fulgencio Batista in a well contested final round.

See, I can make things up too :)

Heh, I see. All this cussing and namecalling, spewing of accusations and lies just because TF’s Ernesto reported something that turned out to be true?

Way to go, Demonoiders!

And, my dear TF-Hater, just for the record: Not the banned Staffer (whoever that may be) had the only credible information on the subject. I’m sure you won’t like to hear this, but as we all see by now, it turned out to be Ernesto instead. Funny enough, the real lies came from the so-called “official sources”, read: site staffers and long time members, who persistantly told everybody who asked that TF was “just lying” or “making things up” and that the downtime was due to some generic “hardware failure”.

So, let me ask you, who’s the liar now?

Though I gotta admit I’m most grateful for the site itself and Deimos’ great efforts to keep it running, I’m really disappointed by the way this whole dreary situation was handled. Not only were they denying the concerned users ANY kind of fact-based information about the real reasons of the downtime or the measures needed to get it back up (btw, best way to make sure the rumormill takes over for you), but also quite a bunch of them came over here and acted like aggrevated haters because somebody else had the guts to report about it, a fact which they obviously didn’t like.

Least to say is, okay, their site got real big and IMO surely is the best torrent resource out there, but in this case, I smell the ugly stench of something that resembles the arrogance of power. That’s a thing I’m used to when it comes to Government shills or the MPAA, but not from the trusted staff of a community based filesharing site, and it really bothers me. I mean, c’mon, how hard could it possibly be to issue an official four sentence statement about legal issues to calm down the frightened users and end all the speculation at the same time? Huh?

Yeah, exactly.

BLAME CANADA! BLAME CANADA! BLAME CANADA!

189 Oct 01, 2007 at 02:36 by TorrentFreak_Hater

If you reallllly think issuing a statement about legal activities would “calm the populace” then you’re not as familiar with this as you so claim.

Now that Demonoid is back online and Deimos has posted the newspost about what happened — has it stopped the paranoia and rumours? No it bloody well hasn’t! There’s posts on Demonoid about people complaining and speculating that the tracker AND the site is fake, that we’re harvesting IPs for the CRIA and that, even now, NATAS - a longtime, loyal, global moderator is being called a SPY?

So don’t presume to lecture ME on lies and half-truths, sonny. You know nothing of what you’re spewing.

Deimos has his reasons and I trust those reasons.

191 Oct 01, 2007 at 02:44 by TorrentFreak_Hater

@Nitrate Row

Of course you do! That’s because you, as well as the majority of others, realise that we DON’T own Demonoid. The only person that owns Demonoid is Deimos himself — and he answers to NOBODY. Why should he? Donations aren’t enough to keep a site as large, and as popular, as Demonoid alive. No, he does that out of his own pocket with HELP from donations.

He does his best with the situations that occur. He doesn’t owe us anything, he doesn’t owe staff anything (except gratitude for helping keep the site running smoothly) but one thing is certain;

He does NOT owe ANYBODY explanations for anything! We should all just be grateful for the amazing site and the fact that no matter what hardships come up, he always manages to find a way to keep Demonoid alive.

It is official - Demonoid staff are stupid n00bs.

Ernesto ban all stupids.

193 Oct 01, 2007 at 02:46 by doncherry

Just to let you know. Anyone using Demonoid trackers are now having their ip addresses recorded and released to authorities for future arrests in an attempt to curb piracy . Apparently the Citizen Rights in Canada protect citizens privacy on the internet and that by blocking Canadian ips,any ip addresses using Demonoid will be arrested. Beware.

194 Oct 01, 2007 at 02:47 by TorrentFreak_Hater

“Ban all stupids”? LOL!

I guess you’d be the first to go then, Sir.

195 Oct 01, 2007 at 02:49 by Solitaris

“global moderator is being called a SPY?”
it can be, very possibly. i using demonoid many years, and i see some things going totaly wrong on site.

@Doncherry

You’re the kind of person that everyone is hating against. I’ve decided to coin a phrase;

When a person spreads lies, misinformation, baseless and groundless BULLSHIT — that person is said to “be doing an Ernesto”

You’re the first candidate! Welcome!

PROOF, ASSHOLE.

And how can you back this up?

199 Oct 01, 2007 at 02:53 by Rick Dickhard

@TFH: Hehe, nah, I wouldn’t dare to lecture you on that matter, because you seem to be more familiar with lies and half-truths than I could ever be. And looking at your previous posts again, “spewing” pretty much nails it.

Also, I wasn’t referring to the whims of paraniod 5 year olds (impossible to stop that, no matter what you do) but to legitimate concerns of well-reasoned long time users and donators like me.

Oh, and btw, after you demanded the demonoid nick of another person with an opinion like mine before (so you and yours could possibly punish him by banning and stuff, after you insulted him over here), how about telling me yours - “sonny”?
