Demonoid Returns, Forced to Block Canadian Traffic By the CRIA

Written by Ernesto on September 30, 2007

The popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid is back online after nearly a week of downtime. The website and the tracker are hosted on the same ISP, but Canadian traffic is blocked thanks to pressure from the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA).

On the Demonoid frontpage we now read:

We received a letter from a lawyer representing the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and we need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience.

Demonoid.com ReturnsThis confirms our earlier reports this week, and show that the CRIA was indeed responsible for the downtime. It’s been a controversial week and at times emotions were running really high. In the absence of any official announcement it was really hard to separate fact from fiction, with rumor and counter-rumor.

The bad news of course is that Demonoid is now unavailable to Canadians. Unfortunately it is not the fist time an anti-piracy organization effectively shuts down access to a part of the BitTorrent community. Earlier this week Isohunt had to ban US users from its trackers, and last month TorrentSpy blocked access to US users, both by pressure from the MPAA.

At the time we write this article, the forums are still offline, but it probably wont take long before these are back online too. The first sign of Demonoid’s return came yesterday when the trackers started responding again.

When an avalanche of upset Demonoid users came to TorrentFreak this week, the mood was grim when not only their site disappeared but also doubts were cast on our report. We aim to be a credible news source and understand the responsibility we have in the BitTorrent community. While understanding how Demonoid’s Canadian users must be feeling right now, it’s great that we now get the chance to share in the relief of the majority of Demonoid’s dedicated userbase.

The second most popular BitTorrent tracker on planet earth has returned, that’s the most important thing.

Update: Demonoid is having some problems again, this message now appears: “The latest changes to the site are giving us some problems - We’ll be back soon”

I
Now that Demonoid is back online and Deimos has posted the newspost about what happened — has it stopped the paranoia and rumours? No it bloody well hasn’t!
Actually he hasn’t made a post about “what happened”. He has made a post saying that traffic from Canada is blocked, and this post said nothing about the downtime.

Well Mr Dickhard, I think that if you haven’t guessed my nick by now … your powers of deduction are sorely lacking ;)
Oh, and btw, after you demanded the demonoid nick of another person with an opinion like mine before (so you and yours could possibly punish him by banning and stuff, after you insulted him over here), how about telling me yours - “sonny”?
Everyone already knows who TFH is ;)

I would like to be wrong but back in 2005 the CRIA tried to get all ISPs in Canada to release customer persoanl information but the Supreme Court overturned this . quote May 2005 “Shaw Communications Inc.today welcomed last week’s Federal Court of Appeal decision that confirmed the right to privacy for Canada’s Internet users. The Court rejected the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) appeal of an earlier ruling that was seeking personal information about Internet Service Provider (ISP) customers allegedly sharing and swapping music over the Internet.
“We’ve been consistent in our strong opposition to this court challenge and are pleased with the outcome of the appeal,” said Peter Bissonnette, President of Shaw Communications Inc. “We were the first ISP in Canada to stand up for customer privacy in this case and we will continue to protect and respect our customers’ fundamental right
to privacy.”
In March 2004, the Federal Court of Canada initial decision stated that Canadian ISPs like Shaw are not required to disclose personal information about their Internet customers to representatives of CRIA. The Court’s decision was a clear statement about the importance of online privacy for Canadian Internet users. CRIA was seeking to overturn that decision, but the appeal was denied.”
Just to let you know. Anyone using Demonoid trackers are now having their ip addresses recorded and released to authorities for future arrests in an attempt to curb piracy . Apparently the Citizen Rights in Canada protect citizens privacy on the internet and that by blocking Canadian ips,any ip addresses using Demonoid will be arrested. Beware.
That’s one of the dumbest statement I’ve read in a long time.

I’m a dickhead for standing up for what I believe in? Funny .. in that case, am I allowed permission to state ALL of you as “dickheads” too? Surely you’re not saying that it’s one rule for me and one for everyone else?

No equality? No playful bantering back and forth of differing opinions? No, just make a statement that I’m a “dickhead”

That’s cool! I can dig it, daddyo.

@Solitaris

For someone that “has used demonoid many years donated” (sic) You sure seem to be taking a lot of pleasure in it’s downtime. Why is that, may I ask?

Also, may I ask for your REAL Demonoid name? I mean, surely you don’t want to be on there anymore, right? Allow me to forward your name - and anyone elses that wishes to disassociate themselves - to the moderating team. I’m sure they’ll be glad to help you find the door :)

CRIA is nothing more than a lobby group for the American corporations (RIAA) trying to dictate terms to Canadians. CRIA has no legal jurisdiction or right to interfere with the way Canadians run their government. I’m personally go to spend the next couple of days drafting a letter to my MP and MPP complaining that a American lobby group is butting it’s arrogant nose where it has no right being in. Hell, CRIA is considering nothing more than a joke and an insult by the Canadian music industry.

214 Oct 01, 2007 at 03:09 by doncherry

Think about!! Why only block Canadian ips when they are protected under Canadian law to do what they want with their right to privacy on the internet. Why not just shut the site (Demonoid) down??

Why should he shut the fuck up? Why wouldn’t they just stop all pirating from Demonoid? That would make the CRIA happy. I’m not saying I agree with shutting it down, but as I see it, everyone has their own opinion.

i guess what im saying is that dont spoil it for the rest of us thats still able to use it. demonoid is in canada and canadians cant use it. thats what it is. use thepiratebay or isohunt. there are other places to find torrents that are dependable.

221 Oct 01, 2007 at 03:29 by jewbuntu

Is IsoHunt still dependable? I thought something happened to it. Oh well..

Hehe, looks like TFH is displaying the typical delusion of self-absorbed neurotics here - They overestimate their own importance, think everybody should know them and feel the same things about them as they do and are truly surprised if somebody doesn’t give a toss. And, of course, they are always right.

Well, this poor loser should probably consider seeing his therapist more often instead of spreading lies and insulting people on the net - or probably do it at Demonoid, where he has a whole squad of staffers to back him up. ;-)

Hm, this reminds me of a really old quote I once read:

“Arguing on the Internet is like competing in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you’re still retarded.”

And for closing, as I saw TFH’s own attitude rise to new heights amongst the Noid staffers during this downtime, I won’t donate anything anymore in future, because it was already told in the above comments that they don’t need my money or uploads. So I will leave here now, take the advice and bring my money somewhere else.

Again, way to go Demonoiders!

… and goodbye.

P.S.: Oh, and one last word to TFH: Err, no, you’re a dickhead because of the arrogance, bullying, one-sided arguing and namecalling you seem to enjoy so much. So I don’t need to know which fantastic nickname you usually prefer, or in fact any deductive skills to realize that you, Sir, are an official numbskull.

’nuff said.

Wow, what a hypocrite. You just did what you told TFH to stop doing…
“spreading lies and insulting people on the net”.
I believe you just accused TFH that he goes to a therapist, and I doubt he does. That makes you someone who is spreading lies AND insulting people on the net. =\

Ok ok.. I apologise to Ernesto for the disruption to his, ahem, “credible blog” So I’ll make this my last post UNLESS I’m specifically provoked by a response.

I’m merely entertaining myself with the delusions and persecutions provided by the majority of posters on here. This has nothing against Ernesto, though I am annoyed at his purile attempt to block me from commenting, I’m willing to let that slide. ;)

I good you all a bid evening!

*dons my fedora and waltzes out of the room*
