Demonoid Rewrites Code, Comeback is Imminent

Written by Ernesto on November 12, 2009

It’s been more than two months since the popular semi-private BitTorrent tracker Demonoid went offline due to hardware problems, but the site’s full return is now imminent. Demonoid’s tracker is already up and running again and according to an update from the site’s staff, the site will follow soon.

demonoidIn September, Demonoid was forced to go offline due to some hardware problems. It later turned out that the hardware issues had resulted in severe data loss.

Some user data and torrent files are unfortunately gone for good and the site’s code has been permanently damaged. This resulted in the extended downtime that persists through today.

Since Demonoid’s owners are not very talkative it didn’t take long before imposters created their own news about the site, causing wild rumors to spread among Demonoid’s fans. Some reported that the site would return under a new name and others claimed that the authorities had permanently shut it down.

In a rare update, Demonoid staff have informed their users that none of this is true. Demonoid will return and things will return to normal as soon as possible.

“There are some rumors about the site shutting down for good and we [sic] starting a new tracker next year. The rumors are of course, lies. There are no plans of shutting down or creating another site,” Demonoid staff write.

Aside from refuting those rumors, the staff update brings more good news. A full comeback of the Demonoid site is looming. Parts of the code had to be rewritten in order to get the site back up and this process is almost finished.

“The parts of the site code that got deleted are being rewritten and should be ready soon. We are also working to try and minimize the data loss as much as possible,” the Demonoid team adds.

As reported earlier, the tracker is already back up and running smoothly, and considering the latest update from Demonoid staff, it shouldn’t take long before the site itself is also recovered.

How long will they stay up this time i wonder?

They go down quicker than a .50 cent hooker……. and stay down longer than a submarine…..

@2
As compared to Piratebay’s roller coaster level of stability?

4 Nov 13, 2009 at 00:50 by Julian

This news made my day. I’m part of a few private sites but nothing compares to Demonoid.

5 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:01 by devvo

about time too!

6 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:06 by Foo

They should take the time to update the site. Their search sucks and the layout looks like it’s from 1999.

I’ve missed Demonoid big time I’m glad it’s going to be back soon ^_~

10 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:13 by Prime

My guess is that Demonoid is a 1 person project, and a spare time project at that.

However when it’s running good, it is a very good site

11 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:15 by Cujo

They’ll be back when they’re good and ready it would seem ;)

12 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:18 by mioptr

How does that happen ? oO I mean losing data is a shame because every website should do regular backups of their database (they had hardware problems on all their backups ?), but it’s understandable. But losing code ? Who doesn’t have copies of the CODE ?! I just can’t fathom how such a thing can happen. Maybe demonoid’s code is so top secret, or so compromising an evidence that they had to keep it only in one place ? Or maybe it’s juste very very bad organization…

13 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:20 by Tub Brumber

It’s amazing how many torrent site users are critical of FREE sites. Demonoid costs nothing yet people still complain. Hollywood must be shitting its pants knowing that it has to compete with free AND do an awesome job.

Methinks many torrent users are very very spoilt

14 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:25 by Pook

Usually the critical people on here are just being ass hats, but Tub has a good point…It’s just not right to complain about something that’s free and you want.

15 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:28 by h33t

the torrent community needs demonoid

filesharers need to stick together

http://www.h33t.com wishes the best of luck to the demonoid team for a speedy return

16 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:28 by Rabbit80

@13 Tub

Yeah – like Vittel and Evian are shitting themselves because they have to compete against the taps in everyones kitchen…

17 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:28 by mutle

@Demonoid, please read up on SCM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_Code_Management) before attempting a rewrite…

See http://git-scm.com/ for a great example, even if the hardware of your Server fails and loses all data you’d still have a pristine copy on your local machine, as well as all mirrors you choose to use…

18 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:33 by Demonoid User

Well, I’m happy to hear it, I can’t wait to get Demonoid’s great selection back.

19 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:40 by Positron

Their eleven or so suggested alternative trackers to their own tracker, have now also been removed from their website’s front page. An obvious move of course, but also an indication, I think, that things are really getting up to steam right now!

Currently I’m betting on a full return of their website before the first of December (of THIS year that is ;)).

Go Demonoid!

20 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:40 by Bob

Great news.
Demonoid is the best site no question
about it.

21 Nov 13, 2009 at 01:53 by BassMechanism

TorrentFreak already reported on this on November fifth! Article’s name: Demonoid is Alive, The Tracker Has Returned.

And as far as “glowing balls” go, that’s not recommendable if one is looking to procreate at any time in the future (impaired seed quality). ;)

31 Nov 13, 2009 at 02:35 by redbaron

Cool. It’s Christmas time. :P

32 Nov 13, 2009 at 02:53 by xzqvyz

I know that there are a vast amount of opinions on this subject, pro and con, but I am very happy about the return of the noid! It’s the only torrent site that really plays host to certain types of content. I’m sure some of the other private sites share similar content, but I am not one to go begging strangers for codes or whatnot.

Demonoid rules!!

33 Nov 13, 2009 at 02:56 by the way

I agree Tub Brumber, so many people bitching about something that’s free. Whiny little bitches!

Oooh the sites not pretty enough. Ooh the search engine sucks. One of the best and easiest out there, more options than I’ve seen on ANY site. And no it doesn’t have flashy or sparkly things on it to help maintain your limited attention span.

@Steveagay I hope your account is one that was deleted, don’t want you or your attitude on the ‘noid. Your probably one of the hit and runs that take but don’t give back.

@Positron When you said “(impaired seed quality)” that’s the last thing you want is a torrent with bad seeds.;)

And somebody, please put the rabbit back in its cage, its dropping crap all over this site!

iptorrent is down

38 Nov 13, 2009 at 03:15 by nomis

Demonoid has the best search by far, since it went down I’ve tried many other sites. Pirate Bay may well have a larger selection of torrents but what’s the point if you can’t locate them?

Demonoid also has the best torrent forum around, the community has taught me more than I’d want to discuss here, everything from burning movie DVDs to getting games onto my console to protecting my anonymity to building a Hackintosh computer to finding rare music etc etc.

Also, although the other sites may be great for the latest crapping pop single or movie, some of us want books or jazz or foreign movies or retro games or Mac applications and Demonoid has all these.

I’m pretty sure that the people on here who are slagging Demonoid either don’t have invites or are just plain brain dead.

Demonoid changed my life, Long live the King.

40 Nov 13, 2009 at 03:41 by Nick

So Nick,
What methods do you use on YOUR high ranking bittorrent site? You seem to be an EXPERT at what they are doing wrong, so give us the address of your site so we can all critique your failures and weaknesses.

Oh wait, that’s right, you don’t have one! Bugger off wanker.

Its this kind of NON-supportive attitude that gives the maffiaa trolls something to feed on. Show a little more respect for the community. And that goes for all you other crybabies out there!

43 Nov 13, 2009 at 04:18 by FlightSuit

Nobody’s going to be able to generate any invites until the sites back up and running (I believe once generated they go out of date pretty soon)

47 Nov 13, 2009 at 04:56 by Moretunes

Never had any doubt the site would be back at some point.
I`ve been round a lot of other site`s since this and the the last shutdown and none of them compare to Demonoid.
Whatever the reasons are for the downtime we i`ll be glad to see it back.

48 Nov 13, 2009 at 05:24 by Khmuprince

I want to express my appreciation to all the people who have been working very hard to get Demonoid back on line again. Demonoid is my favorite P2P website and I am proud of their success. A little hiccup now and then is normal and routine and I don’t mind waiting for it to return. Keep up the great works! Wishing you all the very best and great successes!

Thanks!

Demonoid has become amock with users reporting other users to copyright holders, or otherwise people working for copyright holders reporting users downloading torrents to their ISP. I’m done with Demonoid.

great news!

56 Nov 13, 2009 at 08:03 by lonewolf

I believe the ’seed till your balls glow’ reference was a forum post by a rather overzealous new user who was asking about the ratio system, before he had a sudden outburts of

“SEED TILL YO BALLSZ GLOW”

Or something to that effect. It is now a sig that floated around the forums (which I am far more excited about, in comparison to the site itself)

As for the code corruption – my assumption is that there was a literal hardware fault, causing data loss. The original source code is (or probably had to do with) Deimos, the original Demonoid admin and master. If code was corrupted or damaged, they likely would have had to track him down to get it again, or just write it again.

I think too many people assume server racks are like the one in Die Hard 4 – simultaneously telling us everything we need to know about such posters, and reminding us to ignore them quietly.

Who knows? Maybe they used the opportunity to write some site optimizations. Downtime is an excellent opportunity to clean up a website.

57 Nov 13, 2009 at 09:23 by gratitude

When the Phoenix of demonoid rises from the ashes we should all be grateful. When a community of this magnitude is erected we should all be vigilant to make it the best that it can continue to be.

@15

thats a total reversal from your previous statements that demonoid was nothing but a honeypot designed to trap unwary filesharers….

why the sudden transformation?

65 Nov 13, 2009 at 13:23 by espurious

At a time when many sites are experiencing regular downtime and/or tracker issues (TPB, BTArena, TorrentPortal, 1337x etc), it can only be a good thing that Demonoid is coming back.

Like it or loathe it, it’s good for the community.

66 Nov 13, 2009 at 13:54 by me

@63, coming to think of it, ANY invites-based site could be a honeypot, since it exposes personal relations between torrent uploaders.

That’s why I’m somewhat suspicious of the likes of Demonoid et. al, who don’t open public registrations (anymore), and rely exclusively on invites.

But that’s not a Demonoid-specific rant, it applies to ALL invites-only sites.

67 Nov 13, 2009 at 14:18 by P2PUlongtime

@69 — Demonoid DOES have open registration now and then. You just have to keep checking. I have 7 accounts there created over a 3-year period, so I’m thinking at least some of them will still be there.

Also, since they say some accounts may have been destroyed, they will probably have open registrations again after they are back up. At least for a while.

I think Demonoid is the best because of their huge and varied selection of clean, uninfected files. You don’t find fakes on Demonoid. And their search functions are the best on the ‘net.

68 Nov 13, 2009 at 14:19 by P2PUlongtime

*correction, that was meant for @65…

Any word on whether they’ve lost user data as part of it? Being that its semi-private, I’d hate to find out my acct info was lost as part of this. I donate $10 month to them, and I’d pretty much live to continue where things left off before the hardware failure and data loss.

89 Nov 14, 2009 at 01:21 by Happy

I uploaded a torrent on Sept 15 which is not being recognized by the tracker and another uploaded torrent that is being seeded from Sept 9 so if my deduction skills are correct sometime between Sept 9 and 15 the data loss has occurred. So those of you who registered prior to Sept 9 then you should be safe. This is implying that the torrent info is on the same hard drive as the registration info. We’ll see.

How the heck does one a an invite to demonoid anyway, I have been reluctant to start trolling around the comments areas of TPB and MiniNova to beg for an invite. As I figure if it is meant to be I’ll eventually get one, I tend to use my 2mbps upload speeds to try to seed as much as possible and often end up with rations of 6.00 & above. I have no idea how that would be noticed by anyone other than myself but one can hope….in any event as I would say for any good ptp or torrent site I’ll still be gald to hear they are back up! I felt I should join in here too to help put these mental midgets in their place. It’s free it’s a great scene and theirs always a better chance of finding something not anywhere else at the noid than most other forums, either classic or unique, and I like it’s simplistic design it’s perfect as far as I’m concerned. Don’t get wrong I do enjoy other private sites but there is no substitute for the noid.

102 Nov 14, 2009 at 22:15 by whoa

Of course I would be curious to check out that torrentleech that was mentioned but everytime I hear mention of it in person is always from self-rightous snobs who are unwilling to share the experience of a great forum with others. Don’t get me wrong blah I dont’ know that that is case with yourself but the odds do sway one direction.

103 Nov 14, 2009 at 23:37 by constantine

Wootcakes! I can’t wait to start downloading things and uploading them, now that I no longer have a 60 gb/month bandwidth cap! My ratio wasn’t low because I didn’t take the time to upload, it was low because sometimes it didn’t get recognized and didn’t raise when I uploaded – anyone have any ideas?

104 Nov 14, 2009 at 23:55 by helpful 'noidian

@constantine

Make sure you have DHT turned off while seeding on the ‘noid, as it says on their FAQ page. And while you are seeding a torrent periodically stop the torrent with the stop button for a few minutes and then restart it again and that will tell the tracker to update your stats.

I don’t know if this is true for other sites but is for the ‘noid. When they come back check their FAQ page for more info or goto the forums, people are more than happy to help out.

Although sometimes even mine did not seem to always update. Someone told me to also make sure I signed off the login as well.

Happy sharing, hope this helps.

106 Nov 15, 2009 at 06:59 by FlightSuit

Lemme ’splain somethin’ to ya ’bout all these chodes posting anti-Demonoid messages:

These people remind me of the San Francisco half of the “SF vs. LA” equation: Certain San Franciscans are perpetually involved in their vigorous competition with Los Angeles. Los Angelinos, meanwhile, are blissfully unaware that the competition even exists.

By the same token, those of you hatin’ on Demonoid need to understand that nobody cares about, or is aware of, whatever silly little sites and trackers you give fealty to.

PS: I’m a San Franciscan myself, so don’t go thinkin’ I’m dissin’ Sodom by the Bay. Just tellin’ it like it is.

107 Nov 15, 2009 at 07:42 by ctk

@102

no, enable dht for all of your torrents. this very site has said that enabling dht has ZERO effect on seeding torrents. every single one of my torrents that i have uploaded have had dht enabled and every one of those torrents not only has seeded well, but they seeded better and were able to be completed faster than when i have gotten torrents without dht. if demonoid really cared about not having dht in their torrents, they would strip out that flag for every one of their torrents that gets uploaded.

dht is a very good thing and it has been even more valuable since demonoid has been down. for those of you who don’t enable dht while demonoid has been down, your stuff didn’t get transferred. if everyone enabled dht no one would need to add any additional trackers to get their stuff out because it would connect to local nodes and transfer that way.

anyone scared that enabling dht would affect their demonoid ratios, keep in mind ratios don’t mean anything in terms of site access and transfer rates of demonoid tracked torrents.

We are fortunate to be given a gift such as Demonoid.

Upon their return, let’s all pitch in with our donations, no matter how small, as anything it will help. Re-writing code is tedious work.

A truism we hear so often: Knowledge must be free.

Thank you Demonoid Staff.

@ctk

Your probably one of those people that complain that there aren’t enough seeders while you have an astounding ratio of .35.

This site is NOT Demonoid, yes using dht while the ‘noid was down worked great, some of my downloads completed, many others simply died even with dht enabled.

Again, let me state, on the Demonoid FAQ page, THEY state that for your stats to update correctly you need to turn dht off.

While I agree dht does help, if want to have a good ratio (that proves you are not simply a leecher)
you follow their suggestion, if not then prepare to be called on your low ratio.

The question was about how “sometimes it didn’t get recognized and didn’t raise when I uploaded” and what to do to correct it. I answered that question. Your suggestion would leave him in the same place he already was.

If Demonoid changes their code during this rewrite that would be awesome, if not then this is how it works. No “ratios don’t mean anything in terms of site access and transfer rates of demonoid tracked torrents”, but they do prove if you are not just simply a hit and run leecher that you sound like.

OK, now you can come and tell me how you had a ratio of 300 and uploaded 500 petabytes of data!

For the record I had, at last check, a ratio of 2.4 or 2.5 and half a TB of data. That was done in less than a year with a MAX upload of only 40kbps! Its not my ISP, they have faster rates, its because the stupid phone company won’t upgrade their lines, so it is best speed I can currently get.

I’m considering getting a seedbox, any suggestions from the ‘noids out there. l33t kiddys need not respond as your comments are ignored.

this site is rocking :)

That sounds great! I only got my account a few months ago – just in time for it to seemingly close, lol.

It’s a pity that ADSL doesn’t allow people to upload more. It really hurts when you share internet (due to the cost of it) between students in a house.

The greatest advantage it’d give me is that I’d be able to upload more of my work and source code to my site more often via FTP but I suppose I’d actually be getting what I pay for if they gave me that.

@107

i had uploaded several audiobooks, iirc something like 210 gb, downloaded something near 70 gb, ratio of near 3. all of which had dht enabled. talk to the people who download audiobooks, i am a known commodity.

i have also not asked people to seed. i may have asked a few times if the initial seeder is having problems if stuff isn’t being transferred quickly.

and btw, anyone who looks at ratio instead of length of time being a member when ratios are a known problem being updated i believe is placing emphasis on the wrong thing. how many times have people complained about their ratios not updating? why have a displayed ratio when it never updates?

Demonoid sounds more like a mechanical monster than a turf for torrents.

Concerning the ratio discussion: there’s a good reason why ratios do not have any influence on your status on Demonoid: because there are too many cases where ratio measurement does fail. This is because Demonoid does not use a user-key-based system like “really closed” trackers. Simply put, the tracker usually has no way of recognising you when you start seeding.

I had a ratio of only about 0.45 according to the Demonoid site, yet it was clearly above 1.5 according to uTorrent. This is because I have a dynamic IP, and my torrent client is only connected to my current IP when I log in to the Demonoid site with my account. The thing is that I don’t do this when I seed, so I do not get credit for seeding. On the other hand, if I want to download something I will have to log in first, so my leeching is counted. Hence an extremely biased ratio value on the site.

Long story short: dissing people because of their ratio on Demonoid only proves your own ignorance.

So how do you account for the people with good ratios? Are they just magical or, maybe, they followed the guidelines posted on the FAQ page?

Myself,I am a powerful sorcerer of ratio! By my magical powers of reading and following what the admins suggest, my ratio was quite powerful! I as well have a dynamic IP. No excuse! Dissing people because they can’t or won’t follow guidelines only proves their ignorance.

Sorry if you have to go to the far to difficult step of signing onto the site so the tracker can recognize you. Too much to ask I guess.
