Demonoid Shut Down by the CRIA?

Written by Ernesto on September 25, 2007

Demonoid.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers has allegedly been taken offline by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). Both the tracker and the website have been unresponsive for nearly 24 hours now.

Demonoid Shut Down by the CRIAAs of now it is still unsure what exactly happened, but the popular Dutch news site nu.nl reports that the CRIA is responsible for the downtime.

TorrentFreak contacted some of the Demonoid administrators, but they are not sure what happened either. It is certainly possible that Demonoid’s Canadian ISP pulled the plug after being pressured by the CRIA. The ISP said before that they would take it down if they would receive complaints.

Right now, the Demonoid server is still pinging, but the ISP could have firewalled the everything after they received some serious legal threats. Deimos, the founder and the head admin of the site is unreachable and has not responded yet.

This is not the first time Demonoid suffers major downtime due to pressure from the anti-piracy lobby. Demonoid had to move its servers from The Netherlands to Canada in June after The Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN filed a subpoena against Demonoid’s ISP. BREIN had asked the ISP to take Demonoid offline and hand over the administrator’s personal details, but Demonoid relocated their servers before any harm was done.

Unfortunately, it now seems that Canada is not the “safe haven” as they expected it to be. It is likely that Demonoid has to relocate again, for the second time in three months.

Demonoid tracks over a million .torrent files and is the second largest BitTorrent tracker after The Pirate Bay. The shutdown of the site and tracker is a huge blow for the BitTorrent community that lost 2 of the most popular BitTorrent trackers (TorrentBox was taken offline for US users a few hours ago) within 24 hours.

More info soon!

Update: Still no response from Deimos, the CRIA or Demonoid’s ISP.

Update: The CRIA and Demonoid’s ISP refuse to comment to the allegations, they don’t confirm or deny anything.

Update: The tracker is back online.

We Want Our Fookin Demonoid Back NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

7 Sep 25, 2007 at 21:48 by dave

What about the fact that brein could infiltrate demonoid, and take our ip’s for suing. That’s what makes me scared now when demonoid goes down like that.
All they have to do, is get a court order to replicate the site, and they can reput up demonoid as them instead nad take our ip’s. That’s what I am afraid of with this situation.
I can’t lose demonoid, they just want to restrict the privacy of the public. This is not fair…

noooooooo!!!
just get those servers out of there and start it up as soon as possible!

Well said, the p2p community will NEVER die.

Doubt that any of our IP info could be handed over. As keen as we Canadians are at enforcing anti-piracy, we do recognize that there is also legitimate file-sharing happening and we can’t throw out the baby with the bathwater and vice-versa. So these kinds of things tend to get mired in all sort of legal red tape and the courts are notoriously slow and backlogged. It would take an Act of Parliament to push things through and with signs elections are going to happen, and probably another minority government will be installed, it will be awhile for any IP logging legislation will be enacted

I would tend to agree that Demonoid’s ISP got lawyer-whipped by the CRIA. Deimos and the gang are busy looking for a new ISP and/or relocating as we speak.

Piracy prevails!

Piracy has been around since the “concept” of intellectual property came up. Therefore one can assume that I will be around for a little while.

13 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:09 by dave

That sounds reasonable. I just really hope they are able to get demonoid back online. They are the best/biggest one out there. I just started using them, not even 3 days ago. Got really excited/happy about finding them, then they are taken away from us. I just hope they can find another/fix the problem soon. I fear they will remain in silence for an eternity.

14 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:12 by frank

go to hell, canadian recording industryies!!!!!!!!!!!

15 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:14 by dave

It may not be the only one, no, but it’s the best one.
I have used others for a long time. Most of them have gotten my viruses from time to time. Pirate bay/demonoid are the only 2 respectively large and popular ones remaining.
Demonoid is statistically larger and more popular. if it goes down, there is nothing stopping the communist punks from destroying the rest of the p2p sites in existence. Even on most of the torrent directories, it would be annoying. Almost everything I EVER downloaded had a demonodi tracker.
It’s the only place that I can look without the danger of a virus (as much as most sites).

16 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:16 by the.dwarfer

demonoid has one of the best communities of all the torrent site (along side tpb) thanks comments are plentiful re-seed requests are answered and ratios remain high.

Funny you should say that;

19 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:20 by the.dwarfer

Now come on fubar lets not squabble, all i’m sayong is that demonoid means alot to alot of people, if you like another site please let us know. just don’t knock demonoid.

20 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:21 by George

How about EZTV? It is also down since this morning…

They had a message for a while stating that they will be down for a while, but now nothing. I hope it is unrelated with Demonoid and IsoHunt…

21 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:21 by JaseBarti
go to hell, canadian recording industryies!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually most Canadian Artist labels Don’t even belong to the CRIA anymore. Basically its just representing the RRIA in Canada without actually representing any Canadian Artists.

As for handing of any information like one poster said … we may not be the safe haven that Demonoid thought we were but when it comes to privacy information there is little to no chance that anything would be handed over.

Heck the CRIA hasn’t even manage to mount anything remotely close to the RRIA’s annoying (pay us pay us) letters.

No Man I hope the demon is toast!!!

27 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:35 by dave

Well the time continues to tick.
it’s been down 24-72 hours, it’ll take them 5 to realize it’s down, and about 20 to change hosts and get settled.
Let’s just hope it’s up tomorrow or the next day.

28 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:37 by Anonymous coward

Um I like toast! Delicious ;)

29 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:44 by Jackson

They thought Canada would be a safe haven? LOL! Try Russia.

30 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:44 by lz0

@ #23 the.dwarfer

I find it odd that Demonoid would pull the site completely for upgrading and maintenance. It is usually their policy to 1) announce downtime in advance and 2) at least leave a redirect or brief info page stating that the site is down for maintenance.

A sudden disappearance is out of character and hints at legal trouble.

Let’s hope it IS just a tech issue. But for now it’s all just unsubstantiated rumor till we hear from Deimos or other Demonoid staff.

31 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:46 by n3l87

There are many possible solutions, but only one seems the best possible one:

Problem - Netherlands nore Canada are “safe heavens”

Solution - MOVE TO THE PRQ NETWORK

Seriously, Demonoid Admins, contact Brokep or someone over at TPB, and get that shit set up! They are untouchable!

32 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:48 by Anonymous

We will not let them take us over. We will prevail. Long live piracy.

33 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:50 by the.dwarfer

Measures will be taken.

35 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:53 by spyke02

seriously not cool, pirate bay sucks in my opinion and i have been a demonoid die hard for many years, i really hope that demonoid.com comes back up soon, it was one of the few safe havens left

36 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:54 by Vandingo

Interesting that the 3 top us trackers go down the same week as the Fall US tv season starts - reminds me of the old ECM attacks on satellite hackers before the SuperBowl back in the H card days

37 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:55 by Neil

EZTV is fine, just having server lag issues. They changed their torrent hosting server thingammijig to miivi.org (not miivi.com, don’t panic).

38 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:55 by dave

There has been a “change” in demonoid.
It’s no longer “page not found” it’s not a white blank page when I go there. Now it’s gone again to a page not found.

39 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:57 by Yatti

WTF!!!

40 Sep 25, 2007 at 22:58 by Fabian G

Um if they did take the ip’s of the probably… 5+million people who use demonoid (just random number i dont know)
How could they sue us all?
Idk, i think that if someone tried to pull something off at that scale it wouldnt work.
If demonoid really does go up as a “fake-ip-recording” site, I wonder what RIAA would do.

Also i really dont get what is so hard about getting peoples ip’s in the first place.

I can always see as many as I want when i download off leechers/seeders. Just to test i made my Connections to infinate, and in the end could have written down something like 20,000 ips if i had wanted.

Can someome explain why the RIAA just doesnt do that?

(I probably said lots of stuff that made me seem dumb, but im not a laywer or a pc-pro, so flame away!)

*puts-anti-flam0r-cream-on*

41 Sep 25, 2007 at 23:03 by twitchofkrypton

man this sucks. anybody know where to get a great fix for comic book torrents?

42 Sep 25, 2007 at 23:03 by heddy

holy cow, all you have is a couple of paras off a Dutch news site? Why would they get the exclusive when CRIA aren’t talking, RIAA and IFPI aren’t talking, and none of the Demonoid admins know anything?

This is pretty speculative tosh atm. Sure, they’ve been down for a good while but come on… you’re just fanning the flames.
I find it odd that Demonoid would pull the site completely for upgrading and maintenance. It is usually their policy to 1) announce downtime in advance and 2) at least leave a redirect or brief info page stating that the site is down for maintenance.
Actually, Demonoid goes down for maintenance every day for a bit.
Solution - MOVE TO THE PRQ NETWORK

Seriously, Demonoid Admins, contact Brokep or someone over at TPB, and get that shit set up! They are untouchable!
That would actually be a good idea.
Um if they did take the ip’s of the probably… 5+million people who use demonoid (just random number i dont know)

All the site tracks is what IP each account has. Being a member on a torrent site is not a crime (even in the most draconian fascist countries).
Just to test i made my Connections to infinate, and in the end could have written down something like 20,000 ips if i had wanted.
I doubt your router will actually connect to all those ;)

Just the fact that you connect to your IP doesn’t even mean you infringed on their copyrights. Anti-piracy organizations don’t usually collect a whole lot of data either.
*puts-anti-flam0r-cream-on*
I HATE YOU, YOU #$%#%#%!!!

Oh, wait, I don’t know you :P

46 Sep 25, 2007 at 23:06 by dave

We’ll the ip has to be tracked getting something “illegal (to them)” like copyrighted material or something.
I have just heard rumor’s A LOT about certain torrent sites have been compromosed, and are no longer owned by the original owners. Instead they are now owned by different anti-piracy organizations that get the “ip’s” off the site’s of people who download/upload copyrighted material, and sue them (go after them in court).
I don’t remember the names of these torrent sites, but I have heard a few that became that, but I had never heard of any of them before.
That was my only original concern (that they would take over demonoid with a different organization and us never know) but on a site that big, I think the odds are almost impossible, as the poster mentioned somewhere above.

I just hope they get demonoid back up sooner or later, I really liked that site, and was only signed up for 2 days.

54 Sep 25, 2007 at 23:32 by tdatb

“BMG Canada Inc. v. John Doe — the most recent decision on the matter by the Federal Court, the highest Canadian court to rule on the issue — both uploading and downloading were found to be legal. This decision has not been overturned, so this is current Canadian law”

The courts have deemed it legal, so it’s legal. If there had been a suit against Demonoid in an attempt to get the previous rulings overturned we’d've heard about it on Demonoid long ago. The CRIA cannot shut anything down, only the courts can.

Also, it’s doubtful any agency would’ve moved on them in the middle of the night: much more likely it would’ve happened in the 9AM-5PM range. Factor in the temporary disappearances of EZTV and Mininova and the fact that, while they may be back up now, they are both running terribly slow, and you reach a likely explanation of server crashes brought about by either excessive traffic or DOS attacks. Demonoid would take longer to restore to working order because:
1)They have a huge membership and an even more huge inventory of torrents and,
2)Their site is more complex than most and,
3)Demonoid has a history of being notoriously slow to restore from backups, anyway.

55 Sep 25, 2007 at 23:37 by Shaze

I work just down the street from them and their affiliates, time to go bash some fucking heads in.

56 Sep 25, 2007 at 23:42 by ych890m

As a member of demonoid I uploaded over 40 of the classical music BBC Proms of 2007- recorded from live BBC broadcasts- effectively sharing this marvellous festival with the world. Now the tracker is no longer working and this legitimate activity has been ended - for now. Lets hope demonoid are able to recover!!

57 Sep 25, 2007 at 23:43 by DarkAeons

WTF?
Demonoid is one of my favorite trackers and those hicks, CRIA, who doesn’t even represent the canadian music industry forced the isp to block it?
Seriously canada its time we kick their sorry asses out of our parliamentary representatives offices.

58 Sep 25, 2007 at 23:52 by tdatb

Mininova is rarely ever slow for me, although EZTV can be a real bitch, sometimes.

Again, though, the courts have ruled filesharing legal in Canada and until the courts rule otherwise no one - not the CRIA, the RIAA, the RCMP, nor my Aunt Fanny can get any Bittorrent site in Canada shut down for filesharing.

These allegations are false, and this guy is not a Demonoid OP. Please don’t spread false rumors, as soon as we know anything we will report it (more than likely via IRC). I am an OP on Demonoid, and can confirm this if you were to joing the Demonoid IRC (irc.p2p-network.net #Demonoid). Please do not continue spreading these rumors, as there is no word from the site admin as to why the site is down.

How many times does this have to happen before people recognize the vulnerability of non-distributed search? DHT solves the single-point-of-failure problem for trackers but unlike, say KAD, it does not do search. With distributed search these problems are history. And this has been known for years. Why persist with obvious design flaws when they have already been previously identified and addressed. Nobody else uses centralized search.

77 Sep 26, 2007 at 00:36 by twist

A black day for the bit torrent community.

78 Sep 26, 2007 at 00:37 by ColdFission

This is truly a huge blow to the BitTorrent community as IsoHunt’s trackers and Demonnoid itself are down. They like what, track well into the millions of torrents, which is a massive majority of the BitTorrent network.(In my view at least)

I am very concerned with the state of the network that it is in right now.

I also want to add that the EDonkey Serves in Germany are down and that the EDonkey Network is literally limping right now on some small servers. It is in an extremely critical state right now.

I personally think that if or when shutdowns become more frequent, I really think it is some time before P2P would go down. Shares and pirates would have to resort to techniques and methods used way back when before the Internet was even born. However, this time it would be in digital formats. Although vinyl is still very popular strong. The distribution of these materials will be riskier and much, much more underground.

Oh and yes, I do agree that the RIAA and CRIA do NOT support or even represent artists in North America. I personally believe that these companies are just in it for the money and the joy of suing people in the 6 digits until they are out of house and home, literally in some cases (sell their houses to pay up).

When I do become (and yes, I am planning to do this) a producer of music (particularly in the Trance genre) and a DJ, I’d like to release MY songs and CD’s out there on the net as it is so much more efficient and so much faster than getting it on shelves. I’d make them free of charge as well. I also do not want to have anything to do with the CRIA and/or the RIAA when I become a producer and DJ.

However, I would only have 3 conditions for my works: Listen, Share, Credit Me (For any remixing or usage in a commercial area or release in your works). I mean, even the thought of anyone listening to my music totally outweighs monetary income.

79 Sep 26, 2007 at 00:43 by DemonShareZ

Ok, heres the thing I heard other then this bullshit CRIA hit. According to the rumors I have, Demonoid got seriuosly DdoSed. Zombified, if youd rather. As of 36 or so hrs ago, said bots had been released and tore into Demonoid like a fat kid in a candy store. I heard this thru certain channels.

Everything I have heard so far, including the DdoSing and CRIA sound like a load of shit.

Either way tho, the Demon is definatly down for whatever reason. Im sure tho that they will be back soon. *Crosses fingers and just in case, crosses toes.* LOL

80 Sep 26, 2007 at 00:54 by KaaJamm

Yes the tracker is down, they are going through heavy maintenance, please wait patiently for it to come back up.

Posted to the Wikipedia page on Demonoid: (ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Demonoid&diff=160365350&oldid=160364721 )

Update Sept 26 01:03 GMT - Demonoid not shut down, just an un-scheduled rebuild.
(Posted to Demonoid IRC channel, and re-posted at zeropaid.com)
Anti-Piracy Organization Tries to Shut Down Demonoid
However, the current downtime of Demonoid has nothing to do with legal actions, but with hardware issues. The Demonoid team says they are currently replacing harddrives, and that it could take a few days before the site is back up.
The timeline given indicated that this is more than a regular hardware update. The downtime is probably caused by harddrive failure.
The official announcement in the Demonoid IRC channel is:
“Site offline for a few days while harddrives get replaced”
At this point it is still uncertain if any data is permanently lost or how long it will take to get things up and running. According to one of the admins It looks like the most recent data is lost for good. The good news is that there are backups, but these are a few days old.
Luckily the Demonoid trackers are not affected by the downtime. Demonoid is still one of the most used trackers, any downtime of the tracker will make thousands of torrents unusable in clients without DHT and multi-tracker support.

Update:
Demonoid placed this message on the frontpage:

We had a system problem which will force us to restore everything from backup.

The disks are pretty much empty right now and until we are able to upload the backup and set up everything up, we have to close down.

Just for the record, the CRIA (despite the name) does NOT represent Canadian artists and the Canadian music industry. It’s an AMERICAN association based in Canada to represent the RIAA here.

All they have to do, is get a court order to replicate the site, and they can reput up demonoid as them instead nad take our ip’s. That’s what I am afraid of with this situation.
I can’t lose demonoid, they just want to restrict the privacy of the public. This is not fair…
Actually let’s say my neighbour tried to have his account deleted on Demonoid a few months back

No reply in the IRC channel or via email…

Nice job taking care of people’s privacy by Demonoid

My neighbour never used Demonoid again (thankfully)

Got word from the Canadian ISP. They certainly did NOT pull the plug on Demonoid. Seems this was done voluntarily so as not to aggravate situation with CRIA, for now, in order to assemble a proper legal response. Many options are on the table and Demonoid will be back online eventually. No worries :)

They didn’t warn ahead of time the last time they went down for a few days. Nothing different now. A drive exploded. Routine replacement.

This CRIA nonsense is completely bogus and unsubstantiated as others have pointed out.

This bodes ill, but the p2p community has proven time and time again that even if it is knocked down, it will bounce back up again. Just look at The Pirate Bay…hell, even SuprNova’s been resurrected from its very grave. There will never be a true end to piracy, no matter how many millions are spent by organizations like the CRIA or the MPAA. We’re a community, folks…and communities don’t back down against faceless opposition.

127 Sep 26, 2007 at 02:52 by Jackson

Why Demonoid kicks ass: It’s forums. You can tell if a torrent is good/bad/has problems by reading comments. They also have a lot of stuff *besides* tv+movies+music and has good navigation.

CRIA have a hollow victory. Eventually Demonoid will find a safe haven (I vote for Sweden too though something is to be said for “country redundancy”) and eventually it’ll all go darknet anyway. MPAA needs to wisen up on pricing. RIAA needs to take their outdated pricing model and die: No one needs the RIAA any more. Dead business model. Finis.

to Jackson: Screw sweden, that’s where torrentspy is from, I live in the USA I bought a bunch of their shirts to show support and then they ban ONLY the USA. If the MPAA can go all the way to sweden and threaten them with lawsuits and privacy, what’s to stop them from threatening Canada next? Canada is easier to get to. I need to move out of the USA and into an actual free country. Seems like it’s ONLY the USA that doesn’t have the downloading right anymore and people still refer to this messed up country as land of the free. It makes me sick.

“As of earlier today, we have disabled access from users in the US to our trackers, until further notice. This goes for ALL trackers (torrentbox, podtropolis) we run. This is due to the US’s hostility towards P2P technologies, and we feel with our current lawsuit brought by the MPAA, we can no longer ensure your security and privacy in the US. So, if you’re outside the US, you may notice less peers. We encourage you to add other public, unhampered trackers to torrents you post, in addition to Torrentbox and Podtropolis’s trackers. ” - taken from isoHunt.com
