Demonoid Shut Down by the CRIA?

Written by Ernesto on September 25, 2007

Demonoid.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers has allegedly been taken offline by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). Both the tracker and the website have been unresponsive for nearly 24 hours now.

Demonoid Shut Down by the CRIAAs of now it is still unsure what exactly happened, but the popular Dutch news site nu.nl reports that the CRIA is responsible for the downtime.

TorrentFreak contacted some of the Demonoid administrators, but they are not sure what happened either. It is certainly possible that Demonoid’s Canadian ISP pulled the plug after being pressured by the CRIA. The ISP said before that they would take it down if they would receive complaints.

Right now, the Demonoid server is still pinging, but the ISP could have firewalled the everything after they received some serious legal threats. Deimos, the founder and the head admin of the site is unreachable and has not responded yet.

This is not the first time Demonoid suffers major downtime due to pressure from the anti-piracy lobby. Demonoid had to move its servers from The Netherlands to Canada in June after The Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN filed a subpoena against Demonoid’s ISP. BREIN had asked the ISP to take Demonoid offline and hand over the administrator’s personal details, but Demonoid relocated their servers before any harm was done.

Unfortunately, it now seems that Canada is not the “safe haven” as they expected it to be. It is likely that Demonoid has to relocate again, for the second time in three months.

Demonoid tracks over a million .torrent files and is the second largest BitTorrent tracker after The Pirate Bay. The shutdown of the site and tracker is a huge blow for the BitTorrent community that lost 2 of the most popular BitTorrent trackers (TorrentBox was taken offline for US users a few hours ago) within 24 hours.

More info soon!

Update: Still no response from Deimos, the CRIA or Demonoid’s ISP.

Update: The CRIA and Demonoid’s ISP refuse to comment to the allegations, they don’t confirm or deny anything.

Update: The tracker is back online.

I todely agree with you. Somebody should give them a little heads up on this! They really should use Russian or as I would suggest Ukrainian hoster for the site. I think all the former SovietUnion coumtries would be alright for that.
Demonoid had the best community ever! Stupid laws. If every man that ever torrent came out of their house in winter there would be half of the population freezing out. (The others live in the places where it is warm in winter). I mean who can handle a 500 bux for Vista or even more for Photoshop! It’s just a software, not a medical insurance. But it too shouldn’t cost this month.
Seriously, Demonoid Admins, contact Brokep or someone over at TPB, and get that shit set up! They are untouchable!
Ever heard of the problem of “single point of failure”?

Demonoid is a family torrent site. Be it quality/contents. No other torrent sites could match the communication platform it provided amongst its members..People and students could groom up themselves with abundant self/help / study material which most of the time out of their reach in terms of price/availability in the local market factors. The sharing platfom had a true spirit in it. Millions would miss it as part of their daily life..

I don’t know if this has been said before, but it bears repeating:

There is no reliable source /at all./ The Dutch site doesn’t provide a single source.

For all we know, this could be a rumor.

Again: The claim is _UNVERIFIED._

> The people doing these bad anti-P2P/anti-Freedom things arn’t
> communists (don’t label anyone you dislike as communists), they’re capitalists.

No, they are not capitalists. What they’re doing is dependent upon government force, which relegates them to a species of socialism.

(Communists shouldn’t label all they other socialists they dislike as capitalists.)

If it was some sort of hardware failure, it probably means that a lot of good torrents bit the dust like it happened last time :(

This is bullshit. It’s a website and the website has nothing to do with supporting the illegal use, if any of sharing files.

It’s simply like yousendit.com except more complicated. Get a grip on yourselves people…

What are these countries up to…

Find something better to go after like the gangs, and blacks with guns wearing fat people t-shirts….

FUCKSIDE!

NOTE as previous stated a number of rulelings here could be used as a defense
A) the CDR levy pays the CRIA and MPAA
B) iPOS levy pays them
C) the BMG ruling meant it is legal to upload and download in canada.

Would also be interesting to see HOW
the CRIA has obtained information from a PRIVATE LOGIN website that as torrents do not actually contain any pirated material in 1st place.

Strict privacy laws here folks.
AND if that ISP backed down then they need to get some ISPS stand up to the CRIA which as stated all the top artists form canada NO LONGER BELONG TO THAT AMERICAN PROPOGANIST MAFFIA ORGANIZATION.

They if this article is true will likely get a lawyer and say give me what i payed for or ill sue you the ISP.
Simple and violation of your private rights is equalitable.
While every ISP has hte right to spy on you they cannot at this time actually give that NFO out as it is a violation of the HUMAN RIGHTS CODE of CANADA.

Holy crap - STOP ALL THE WHINING!!!

Anybody stop to think maybe Deimos actually has a life… Maybe he’s not sitting next to the hardware waiting for a problem…

I think we need to stop the whining, thank Deimos for all he does and wait…

Demonoid will rise again - until then, use one of the others - there are only a couple of hundred to choose from…
