Demonoid Shut Down by the CRIA?

Written by Ernesto on September 25, 2007

Demonoid.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers has allegedly been taken offline by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). Both the tracker and the website have been unresponsive for nearly 24 hours now.

Demonoid Shut Down by the CRIAAs of now it is still unsure what exactly happened, but the popular Dutch news site nu.nl reports that the CRIA is responsible for the downtime.

TorrentFreak contacted some of the Demonoid administrators, but they are not sure what happened either. It is certainly possible that Demonoid’s Canadian ISP pulled the plug after being pressured by the CRIA. The ISP said before that they would take it down if they would receive complaints.

Right now, the Demonoid server is still pinging, but the ISP could have firewalled the everything after they received some serious legal threats. Deimos, the founder and the head admin of the site is unreachable and has not responded yet.

This is not the first time Demonoid suffers major downtime due to pressure from the anti-piracy lobby. Demonoid had to move its servers from The Netherlands to Canada in June after The Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN filed a subpoena against Demonoid’s ISP. BREIN had asked the ISP to take Demonoid offline and hand over the administrator’s personal details, but Demonoid relocated their servers before any harm was done.

Unfortunately, it now seems that Canada is not the “safe haven” as they expected it to be. It is likely that Demonoid has to relocate again, for the second time in three months.

Demonoid tracks over a million .torrent files and is the second largest BitTorrent tracker after The Pirate Bay. The shutdown of the site and tracker is a huge blow for the BitTorrent community that lost 2 of the most popular BitTorrent trackers (TorrentBox was taken offline for US users a few hours ago) within 24 hours.

More info soon!

Update: Still no response from Deimos, the CRIA or Demonoid’s ISP.

Update: The CRIA and Demonoid’s ISP refuse to comment to the allegations, they don’t confirm or deny anything.
Doubt that any of our IP info could be handed over. As keen as we Canadians are at enforcing anti-piracy, we do recognize that there is also legitimate file-sharing happening and we can’t throw out the baby with the bathwater and vice-versa. So these kinds of things tend to get mired in all sort of legal red tape and the courts are notoriously slow and backlogged. It would take an Act of Parliament to push things through and with signs elections are going to happen, and probably another minority government will be installed, it will be awhile for any IP logging legislation will be enacted

I would tend to agree that Demonoid’s ISP got lawyer-whipped by the CRIA. Deimos and the gang are busy looking for a new ISP and/or relocating as we speak.
Yeah, I use demonoid for the Forums, I don’t download anything from it.

A black day for the bit torrent community.

This is truly a huge blow to the BitTorrent community as IsoHunt’s trackers and Demonnoid itself are down. They like what, track well into the millions of torrents, which is a massive majority of the BitTorrent network.(In my view at least)

I am very concerned with the state of the network that it is in right now.

I also want to add that the EDonkey Serves in Germany are down and that the EDonkey Network is literally limping right now on some small servers. It is in an extremely critical state right now.

I personally think that if or when shutdowns become more frequent, I really think it is some time before P2P would go down. Shares and pirates would have to resort to techniques and methods used way back when before the Internet was even born. However, this time it would be in digital formats. Although vinyl is still very popular strong. The distribution of these materials will be riskier and much, much more underground.

Oh and yes, I do agree that the RIAA and CRIA do NOT support or even represent artists in North America. I personally believe that these companies are just in it for the money and the joy of suing people in the 6 digits until they are out of house and home, literally in some cases (sell their houses to pay up).

When I do become (and yes, I am planning to do this) a producer of music (particularly in the Trance genre) and a DJ, I’d like to release MY songs and CD’s out there on the net as it is so much more efficient and so much faster than getting it on shelves. I’d make them free of charge as well. I also do not want to have anything to do with the CRIA and/or the RIAA when I become a producer and DJ.

However, I would only have 3 conditions for my works: Listen, Share, Credit Me (For any remixing or usage in a commercial area or release in your works). I mean, even the thought of anyone listening to my music totally outweighs monetary income.

Ok, heres the thing I heard other then this bullshit CRIA hit. According to the rumors I have, Demonoid got seriuosly DdoSed. Zombified, if youd rather. As of 36 or so hrs ago, said bots had been released and tore into Demonoid like a fat kid in a candy store. I heard this thru certain channels.

Everything I have heard so far, including the DdoSing and CRIA sound like a load of shit.

Either way tho, the Demon is definatly down for whatever reason. Im sure tho that they will be back soon. *Crosses fingers and just in case, crosses toes.* LOL

These things happen. Ahh, finally a chance to sort some of those downloaded files and listen to some of those tunes, I have only been sampling.

Good luck to all you demons and pirates. Hope to see ya’ soon.
What about the fact that brein could infiltrate demonoid, and take our ip’s for suing. That’s what makes me scared now when demonoid goes down like that.
All they have to do, is get a court order to replicate the site, and they can reput up demonoid as them instead nad take our ip’s. That’s what I am afraid of with this situation.
I can’t lose demonoid, they just want to restrict the privacy of the public. This is not fair…
I believe that they only keep identifiable information in volatile RAM, thus erasing all IP addresses and whatnot when someone pulls the plug on their servers. I wouldn’t worry, unless this fact that I am now recalling is for some other BT site.
This sucks, though…

“Actually, Demonoid goes down for maintenance every day for a bit.”

No shit sherlock? And they have a page that tells you they are down for maintenance.

This sux- it really is the best site out there- but I never download movies or music off it so the music industry shutting it down gets my goat. But I went everyday for the books and comics- other sites don’t concentrate on that at all - well, happiness never lasts forever.

The lastest info regarding this matter has been decided that demoniod is to much of a risk to our servers and we cannot under take constant attacks also we cannot even think to bare the courts dissions. we are a high class company that has up most respect.
Thi matter should be closed
