Demonoid Shut Down by the CRIA?

Written by Ernesto on September 25, 2007

Demonoid.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers has allegedly been taken offline by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). Both the tracker and the website have been unresponsive for nearly 24 hours now.

Demonoid Shut Down by the CRIAAs of now it is still unsure what exactly happened, but the popular Dutch news site nu.nl reports that the CRIA is responsible for the downtime.

TorrentFreak contacted some of the Demonoid administrators, but they are not sure what happened either. It is certainly possible that Demonoid’s Canadian ISP pulled the plug after being pressured by the CRIA. The ISP said before that they would take it down if they would receive complaints.

Right now, the Demonoid server is still pinging, but the ISP could have firewalled the everything after they received some serious legal threats. Deimos, the founder and the head admin of the site is unreachable and has not responded yet.

This is not the first time Demonoid suffers major downtime due to pressure from the anti-piracy lobby. Demonoid had to move its servers from The Netherlands to Canada in June after The Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN filed a subpoena against Demonoid’s ISP. BREIN had asked the ISP to take Demonoid offline and hand over the administrator’s personal details, but Demonoid relocated their servers before any harm was done.

Unfortunately, it now seems that Canada is not the “safe haven” as they expected it to be. It is likely that Demonoid has to relocate again, for the second time in three months.

Demonoid tracks over a million .torrent files and is the second largest BitTorrent tracker after The Pirate Bay. The shutdown of the site and tracker is a huge blow for the BitTorrent community that lost 2 of the most popular BitTorrent trackers (TorrentBox was taken offline for US users a few hours ago) within 24 hours.

More info soon!

Update: Still no response from Deimos, the CRIA or Demonoid’s ISP.

Update: The CRIA and Demonoid’s ISP refuse to comment to the allegations, they don’t confirm or deny anything.

Update: The tracker is back online.

Well, that was a waste of five minutes.

(Cluebats: 1. Bigger text, please. 2. No fwucking flash menus — people who use Firefox, which your sites requires, use it in particular in order to install cool extensions like FlashBlock.)

This bodes ill, but the p2p community has proven time and time again that even if it is knocked down, it will bounce back up again. Just look at The Pirate Bay…hell, even SuprNova’s been resurrected from its very grave. There will never be a true end to piracy, no matter how many millions are spent by organizations like the CRIA or the MPAA. We’re a community, folks…and communities don’t back down against faceless opposition.

actually I just did some research on pirate bay. There in sweden, and fully safe from all anti-piracy groups. They could move the demonoid servers to sweden if they wanted to be “safer”.

Taking demonoid off the internet is like taking the proverbial piss out of the swimming pool. It just won’t work.

Why Demonoid kicks ass: It’s forums. You can tell if a torrent is good/bad/has problems by reading comments. They also have a lot of stuff *besides* tv+movies+music and has good navigation.

CRIA have a hollow victory. Eventually Demonoid will find a safe haven (I vote for Sweden too though something is to be said for “country redundancy”) and eventually it’ll all go darknet anyway. MPAA needs to wisen up on pricing. RIAA needs to take their outdated pricing model and die: No one needs the RIAA any more. Dead business model. Finis.

My demonoid tracker are still working on my seeds though so what does that mean? its just that I cant log on to my demoid accounts… anyone having the same situation?

I use these torrent site to find music you cant even find in stores anymore So I say leave em alone

139 Sep 26, 2007 at 02:58 by Toilet Finger

I cannot believe this! Maybe it really is against the law to steal movies and music? PSP is just a way of saying you are interested in a community of thieves. You all in Demonoid are breaking the law and you do so without regard for consequences!

140 Sep 26, 2007 at 03:01 by CaptainHack

Toilet Finger: Interesting you would make such a statement, but comment on a website that promotes p2p sharing. Therefore, you must be one of the same md persona that continues to make an assclown out of themselves. Long live p2p and demonoid where movies are often made in better quality than publishing companies.

The retards are really coming out of the woodwork today…this thread better not be representative of the general public IQ level or the world is going to end soon. Within a generation. Probably.
Speculation is a waste of time and brainwork. Be patient and we shall see what has become of Demonoid.com. Meanwhile keep those teeny-bopper retarded comments flowing..hehe.

Long Live Demonoid

I used to still buy the stuff I really wanted even though I could get it free. I won’t buy anything ever again if they ruin all the fun of the internet downloading.

typical move by the communist canadian government

147 Sep 26, 2007 at 03:12 by Mr. Green

to Jackson: Screw sweden, that’s where torrentspy is from, I live in the USA I bought a bunch of their shirts to show support and then they ban ONLY the USA. If the MPAA can go all the way to sweden and threaten them with lawsuits and privacy, what’s to stop them from threatening Canada next? Canada is easier to get to. I need to move out of the USA and into an actual free country. Seems like it’s ONLY the USA that doesn’t have the downloading right anymore and people still refer to this messed up country as land of the free. It makes me sick.

I’m a DS rom uploader on Demonoid, and I’m sat on a ton of new stuff … some of it not even on the newsgroups yet … got ‘em all set to roll out on Demonoid, when I got home from work … and BAM! I go online and it’s down :(

Just wanted all my leechers to know that I have the newest $#!t and you will get it as soon as Demonoid is back … and it will be back … I can feel it … keep the faith.
