Demonoid Shuts Down Again

Written by Ernesto on November 09, 2007

Demonoid.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers, was forced to go offline again because the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) threatened their ISP.

It’s been just over 6 weeks since the CRIA allegedly shut down the Demonoid BitTorrent tracker. Details were scarce at the time, with lots of people simply claiming the site had some technical or server issues. Indeed, TorrentFreak came in for quite some criticism when we claimed the CRIA was involved, but when the site returned there were some ominous signs which seemed to support our claims.

Eventually, the Demonoid trackers reappeared, followed by the site itself but was forced to block Canadian visitors by the CRIA. However, despite blocking Canadians, it seems the CRIA hasn’t yet had enough of harassing Demonoid and its host.

On Demonoid.com we now read:

“The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.”

Indeed, Demonoid’s host had previously said that if it had any major hassle, it was likely it could pull the plug on the site.

A message on the Demonoid IRC channel says: “Site is down, tracker is up. Expect the site to return, unless we hear otherwise from Deimos.”

Canada seems to becoming more unfriendly for BitTorrent sites - Demonoid aren’t the only ones being threatened by the recording labels there.

Right.. enough of this crap. Time to rally up all the p2p users and get some demonstrations going.

We have to organise and fight back or they’ll win.

OMFG wow went to check out some new TUS releases and got that message. ahh shiz does this mean “permanent” or is it a “we shall move the server to Tonga like torrent reactor” type of thing. I hope this is not permanent. It’s just the line stating it is not possible to keep the site online worries me a lot.

From the IRC channel:

I got that messages an hour after downloading a torrent file from the site. Well so far their tracker is still working. I hope they’ll be back soon.

I’m thinking the Candian government should recognize CRIA for what it is: an extension of the RIAA. And limit the bastards power.

I think that we should contact someone in the canadian government because P2P is legal. they pay extra taxes for a reason….

Seriously, how can us torrent lovers all get together on this. We need organisation. Can’t we have some perminant cause posted on torrentfreak and all other torrent related site?

Would be good to have some kind of fight back plan.

We need to start standing up to the corporate bullies! I live in Canada and have been using a proxy and that was annoying, but to loose another one of the best sites out there for good is a tragedy.I dont know what to do or wear to start but there has to be something we can do ?(realistically and non-violent of course)

21 Nov 09, 2007 at 10:39 by RED DWARF POSSEY

Is there another even a bit like DEMONOID.If there is I cant find it

22 Nov 09, 2007 at 10:43 by X-Men

Yeah… there is something we could do. Move the servers to another planet and it will be fine. Seriously… CRIA and the other organizations have the money, the power, We ? We got nothing…

23 Nov 09, 2007 at 10:43 by Sven

I agree with $4REAL$

Who’s up for us all doing something about all this corporate bullying?

Torrentfreak owners? How about we all get something happening? A perminant area to call for action!

Well… since I’m certainly not one to judge any lack of courage and fortitude by those who run and host bittorrent sites like Demonoid. I guess the CRIA has alot more power or influence than we give them credit for. Boy…when I first heard about the CRIA, I thought they were pretty much a paper tiger. I guess not unfortunately.

Why does Demonoid limit its info cant they give a better brief on what has happened
