Demonoid Shuts Down Again

Written by Ernesto on November 09, 2007

Demonoid.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers, was forced to go offline again because the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) threatened their ISP.

demonoid

It’s been just over 6 weeks since the CRIA allegedly shut down the Demonoid BitTorrent tracker. Details were scarce at the time, with lots of people simply claiming the site had some technical or server issues. Indeed, TorrentFreak came in for quite some criticism when we claimed the CRIA was involved, but when the site returned there were some ominous signs which seemed to support our claims.

Eventually, the Demonoid trackers reappeared, followed by the site itself but was forced to block Canadian visitors by the CRIA. However, despite blocking Canadians, it seems the CRIA hasn’t yet had enough of harassing Demonoid and its host.

On Demonoid.com we now read:

“The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.”

Indeed, Demonoid’s host had previously said that if it had any major hassle, it was likely it could pull the plug on the site.

A message on the Demonoid IRC channel says: “Site is down, tracker is up. Expect the site to return, unless we hear otherwise from Deimos.”

Canada seems to becoming more unfriendly for BitTorrent sites - Demonoid aren’t the only ones being threatened by the recording labels there.

33 Nov 09, 2007 at 10:56 by Sven

Who Cares.. ?

They will take down more and more sites unless there’s some action on our part.

If we all sit here and say who cares and go to another site, soon there will be none left.

These guys want an internet that’s just one large shopping catalogue.

Bring back the spirit of the 60’s and 70’s, even though i’m not that old, they knew how to rally together and protest!

How long before someone says Demos has been shot or some other lies.Cria eat shit

35 Nov 09, 2007 at 10:59 by d488z

How about bombarding the CRIA with say a million emails and complaints.

36 Nov 09, 2007 at 11:00 by RED DWARF POSSEY

You cant fight governments they have billions we got hundreds.Do the math

37 Nov 09, 2007 at 11:01 by Sven

Can send complaints, but it’d need to be organised. I think a rally outside thier offices would get media attention.

38 Nov 09, 2007 at 11:03 by Crikey!

Yea….no.

There may be a gazillion torrent sites (all of varying quality), but Demonoid was the best because of it’s community. Also, all the helpful & insightful feedback/comments on the quality of the torrents posted for all to see, great torrents & really a wide selection of shared stuff, and really some the friendliest & most generous people i’ve come across online.

If this is permanent, they WILL be missed.

I think i’m gonna go watch Fight Club now…hmph.
Yeah… there is something we could do. Move the servers to another planet and it will be fine. Seriously… CRIA and the other organizations have the money, the power, We ? We got nothing…
What we have is numbers, I mean there are A LOT of people around the world who are involved with P2P , your type of attitude is to just except defeat?? if people think like that then there really is no hope for P2P, although i personally think your wrong.

So unimpressed. Such a loss to the BT world. Sounds as though CRIA’s vigilantism is making them alot of (acronym-esque) enemies.. like

CAB NIB MPAA RIAA SOCAN AVLA SOPROQ TAD ASCAP BMI and

IOU4BNSOQNBVKHGV.

Come back, demonoid.com. Test drive some Uzbekistan servers. And then if that fails there’s always Azerbaijan. Or Kyrgyzstan… Turkmenistan Tajikistan Kazakhstan

:(
i use demonoid for all downloading and i am now very sad that the site is down

43 Nov 09, 2007 at 11:09 by Demonioder

It’s just the sound dinosaurs make when they go extinct!(MPAA,CRIA,,)
Clinging on to their last gasps of air before they’re consigned to the history books.
Imagine all that $100’s of millions being made, all the 1000’s of jobs, it’s easy to see why they would try ‘n try and get all the help they can from the governments.
It’s not the “Illegal piracy” they’re concerned about, it’s “Will we have a job next year!”
All it takes is a few individuals and you have Global Media Distribution @ near zero cost.
Hardly Capitalism is it.

I might be wrong. I just tried to think realisticly. What the hell should we do ? I think Deimos should move the servers to some other country…. because if it stays in Canada.. Demonoid won’t last for long IMO.

BLAME CANADA.

Last time Demonoid went down for

the week that peeps seem still

hung up on, downloads were still

continuing here (non- canadian)

country.

On this occassion they are still

operating also.

I have started demonoid torrents,

resumed half eaten demonoid

torrents, and kept current

torrents going - so far s’all

good.

My question to any experts out

there would be, do you think that

this will be the case for a while

that demonoid torrents that are

sitting in peoples bit torrent

clients shall continue to

operate.

I guess i’m just not sure if the

files themselves are fully kept

on their host’s servers, or if

the sheer peer to peer nature

means that we can continue to

seed, bleed, feed, and merrily

fill our xmas baskets with

entertainment goodies :)

god if they are going to take the damn thing down they should do it already, they are taking this issue like pussys. The record industrys are run by a bunch of wanker, pussy jerks, so its nothing new on their behalf.

Exactly, well said,There is more at stake then just another site or another tracker, it’s the whole net! We cant let them start dictating weather or not we can share with friends/on-line community, or we are gunna end up with a controlled environment on the net, i never protested in the seventy’s, I wasnt even alive, lol, but they did know how to stand up and protest things, what is so different know? aside from the fact that the media/Governments/corporations have most people dumbed down into thinking they cant make a difference

49 Nov 09, 2007 at 11:21 by swe

bad times for the Torrents trackers, yesterday oink, today demonoid, tpb tomorow? :x

50 Nov 09, 2007 at 11:22 by Sven

Spot on $4REAL$!

It’s about us all losing the internet as we remember it.

If we all think about this for a minute ok. If these corporations get their way, what can we do on the internet?

By a book? Look at some advertisements? Read some political crap that’s moderated?

No more freedom of expression.

It’s not just P2P, this will snowball into something much worse.
