Demonoid Shuts Down Again

Written by Ernesto on November 09, 2007

Demonoid.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers, was forced to go offline again because the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) threatened their ISP.

demonoid

It’s been just over 6 weeks since the CRIA allegedly shut down the Demonoid BitTorrent tracker. Details were scarce at the time, with lots of people simply claiming the site had some technical or server issues. Indeed, TorrentFreak came in for quite some criticism when we claimed the CRIA was involved, but when the site returned there were some ominous signs which seemed to support our claims.

Eventually, the Demonoid trackers reappeared, followed by the site itself but was forced to block Canadian visitors by the CRIA. However, despite blocking Canadians, it seems the CRIA hasn’t yet had enough of harassing Demonoid and its host.

On Demonoid.com we now read:

“The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.”

Indeed, Demonoid’s host had previously said that if it had any major hassle, it was likely it could pull the plug on the site.

A message on the Demonoid IRC channel says: “Site is down, tracker is up. Expect the site to return, unless we hear otherwise from Deimos.”

Canada seems to becoming more unfriendly for BitTorrent sites - Demonoid aren’t the only ones being threatened by the recording labels there.

I’m a regular visitor of Demonoid and I am sad to see it is offline again. I hope to see this site come back soon as I enjoy visiting this forum and that it is unfair to see it go now when it has only return for less than 2 months since it went offline. Please can someone email me on Cheuk34@yahoo.co.uk if the situation changes.

thank you.

The thing what we could do (many p2p users asking) is to collect enough people, who are interested in filesharing, create serverbase in africa (mosambik or something like that), open OWN network/lines/operators etc everything what internet providers do, reopen critical sites there, and enjoy freedom of filesharing! The guestion is not about money, it is about PEOPLE who want to do that!

Sure Cheuk Ma i will most def remember to email you if/when demonoid goes back up!

no IP/sharing laws -> country on piracy blacklists -> WTO problems -> long enough of this and a G8 member will inevitably attempt to install democracy on the area…

“lol u can’t blame the canadian government”

Bull shit. P2P was ruled LEGAL in Canada in 2004.

If the Canadian government allows flagrant violation of the law by the CRIA without reprecussion, the YES, I CAN BLAME CANADIAN GOVERNMENT !

Lies! The Demonoid site isn’t down, Torrentfreak just made that up. And even if it is down it is irresponsible for this site to say so based on a rumour, that happens to also be correct, etc yadda yadda yadda.

BTW kudos to Comical Ali on getting a job with the Demonoid staff after the fall of the Baath regime in Iraq.

This is for all you people saying that the Demonoid site is pathetic and how they’re cowards over there. STFU and GET A CLUE.

You sit there and say things like “fight them back” or “the CRIA can’t do anything”. You people have no clue at all what they and the others can do to people. If they fought and took the CRIA to court it’s going to cost money and not everyone has money to fight it out in court. Any of you people ever been to court over anything? Do you realize how expensive attorney fees can get? You people have no clue.

You sit behind your monitors and whine like a bunch of pathetic little kids because your favorite torrent site isn’t online anymore. Acting like you’re going to die if it dosn’t come back. Get a life people. The tracker is still going. That tells me they’re going to try coming back at some point soon. It’s the same thing that happened the last time. Only this time the CRIA threatened the people renting out the servers because they knew threatening Demonoid wouldn’t do any good.

The way some of you are whining is pretty pathetic. Then you have the others who are bashing Demonoid and it’s users who are just as pathetic. If you want to fight the CRIA then go right ahead. You might want to know that it’s a representative of the RIAA in Canada and you should know how ruthless the RIAA is when they go after people. I mean, they’ve sued people who don’t even own computers or have the internet and have won. So if you have a few hundred grand laying around then by all means go right ahead and complain to them. Keep in mind that you’re just bringing some unwanted attention to yourself in doing that.

I’m no Demonoid fan and I’m also not an employee of the MPAA or the RIAA. I know all you paranoid kids out there like to quickly accuse people like that whenever they speak out, but don’t waste your time this time. I’m spekaing only for myself here. I hate the MPAA/RIAA as much as anyone else does. I rarely download torrents and that’s only if I miss a TV show. I just think it’s pretty pathetic how some of you are bashing and whining like 5 year olds over the internet of all places.

Leave it up to the Demonoid guy to figure out what he wants to do. I bet anything he doesn’t really care that some of you are wanting to fight it because I bet that’s the last thing on his mind right now.

Either the site is going to close for good or he’ll move the site to another country that makes it hard to get him.

One last thing. Stop talking about The Pirate Bay like it’s this “uber-secure” torrent site. That site is filled with fake torrents and possible MPAA/RIAA staff posing as members. They talk trash because they know it’s hard for them to be touched, but I wouldn’t be surprised if all that trash talks bites them in the ass one day.

Okey then Madagaskar or Nauru/Samoa/Bermuda/Schwaziland/Mosambic
Columbia (In the middle of the jungle covered by illegal weed plantation lol)etc etc…there are planty of countries where we can establish own “Base”

Maybe now the Demonoid crew will move their servers to a better place - it was clear that was needed since they had to block Canadians.

Canada is VERY close to the USA geographically, pressure from American lobby groups gets to Ottawa quick and strong.

ThePirateBay owns an ISP company, which could be a good home for Demonoid.

many people want to act so…..

NEVER ever, i mean NEVER buy another CD from these companies again!! (even though most of us stopped getting cd’s in 1999) but still, don’t buy anything from them and encourage your friends to do the same.

and rally to any causes related to P2P.

63 Nov 09, 2007 at 12:02 by farty pants

blame canada!

64 Nov 09, 2007 at 12:05 by Trent

I’ll never ever buy music again, period. If I have to, i’ll just record from free to air radio again, just like i did as a kid. But these companies will not get any money from me ever again.

We’re as mad as hell and we’re not going to take this anymore!

67 Nov 09, 2007 at 12:17 by Anonymous

Once you start running it’s hard to stop, Demonoid should have made stand for itself a long time ago. Instead of admitting guilt by running away time after time.

*just rolls his eyes and sighs…

This was bound to happen.

At least this time, Demonoid will sort it out once and for all.

We just have to have a little patience.
