Demonoid To Be Resurrected Under New Admin

Written by enigmax on April 11, 2008

Deimos, the administrator of Demonoid has announced that he is stepping down for good due to his preoccupation with ‘real-life’ issues. For those tearing their hair out with dismay, you can stop now. The site will be resurrected under a trusted new admin and Deimos is asking the community to give him support.

Ever since Demonoid had to leave Canada, there has been speculation about the future of the site. Although the tracker has been returning periodically from various places - the latest being Ukraine - no solid news has been coming out about a proper comeback. Deimos, the Demonoid admin, has been very quiet - until now, that is.

In a message on the SubDemon forums, Deimos breaks his silence:

Hello Everyone,

It is with great sadness (and not a little relief) that I announce that I will be stepping down as admin of Demonoid, with effect from today.

Demonoid is currently suffering from a number of things, prime amongst these being my distraction with real-world issues, and so I have handed the reins over to a new administrator - a close friend of mine, which I trust completely and has the knowledge and time to take care of the site.

He will, in due course, be making his own announcements about the future of Demonoid. Of course, speculation over the future of the site is fun, but it is ultimately fruitless - you will all, in the near future, become aware of what the future holds. I trust that you will all give your support to the new admin as he finds his feet while he resurrects Demonoid.

Thanks again for your support in making Demonoid what it was and is.
Goodbye and good wishes - it has been a blast!

- Deimos

It’s great news for the BitTorrent community that the future of Demonoid is in trusted hands and for some, quite a surprise after such a long wait. But it just might be worth it if one of the world’s most popular trackers does indeed come back with a bang.

Seeing as how I’m a firm believer of the bittorrent Hydra theory, I find it rather disappointing, and perhaps disillusioning, that there have really been no trackers to step up and take on the popularity and high quality of what demonoid once was. Ever since demonoid went down, the only tracker with a decent selection that we could really trust was The Pirate Bay. Now while the TPB crew is the greatest thing to happen to the bittorrent world, it should not be the only worthwhile source. A hydra is not supposed to be one head with a bunch of little tiny heads that don’t really do much but control bladder functions.

I think it has to do with age. The younger generations (Deimos is old-school) are generally more fear-driven in everything they are and do. Us old ones have more guts. One needs huge balls to start up a tracker and keep it running despite some blows and cowardly attempts to kill it off.

Deimos, my good friend, thanks and I wish you the best with your health and real life.

Demonoid was no where near the best, it made people think it was good by becoming invite only, it didn’t have everything you wanted, it had some exclusive stuff, but other trackers and sites have exclusive content. It was just popular. Jack of all trades, master of none.

17 Apr 11, 2008 at 01:05 by Jon

I just hope they find a truly safe place to have the site hosted. That accomplished anything is possible.

Not much private in Demonoid. If I remember correctly, everybody could use the tracker. Think Demonoid should have a member limit, using passkey and enforcing ratio rules. Demonoid was leecher’s paradise.

22 Apr 11, 2008 at 01:33 by Awesome

Demonoid was the greatest bittorrent site there has ever been, and since it’s been gone nothing has come anywhere near to it’s quality — Looking forward to be back there sharing

Thanks for everything Deimos!
precisely, it had all the downsides of a public site, but you had to be invited.
Well, it was popular because of it’s elite connotation as a private tracker. But that just drew more content. I was skeptical of the merits of private trackers until I used Demonoid. It seemed as if they had all the content you couldn’t find anywhere else. So yes, being invite-only didn’t make it great, the fact that it truly did have a vast and high quality selection of torrents did.

24 Apr 11, 2008 at 01:38 by FinderSeeker

Hmm…I guess I’m just a bit paranoid but I can’t seem to just trust that the site would come back with a new Admin. Must just be me.

25 Apr 11, 2008 at 01:50 by mike jones

it wasnt the greatest trust me there are far better sites out there demonoid was good but it had slow speeds and many fake torrents pretty much a private mininova but all the same sucks to see a site go down i do not know if i do trust it comming back it seems fishy to me

26 Apr 11, 2008 at 01:55 by anonymous

Demonoid was semi-private. So you didn’t have ABSOLUTE noobs usually. Sure, there were leechers, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as TPB, for example.
And the selection of content was just unbeatable.

34 Apr 11, 2008 at 03:40 by Konstantin

It may have been a “leecher’s paradise”, but you can’t deny that they had the best torrents around. Any obscure little thing you wanted you could get, with no BS. Besides, it wasn’t that hard to get an invite or get an account on one of their registration days.

35 Apr 11, 2008 at 03:42 by Kenny

What made Demonoid great was its unsurpassed search function. It’s ability to categorize torrents with the use of precise drop-down menus has yet to be equaled elsewhere. Also the comment/feedback function was topnotch. Not to mention the amount of high quality torrents. Hurry back soon Demonoid.

40 Apr 11, 2008 at 05:04 by db

Demonoid was (and hopefully will be again) the greatest. It had a huge selection that was always decently seeded. Ever since Demonoid went down, I’ve become a member of several elite torrent sites, and none of them, I repeat, none, could match Demonoid. In order to come even close, I have to join 8 or 9 specialized sites. On for chess stuff, one for comics, one for games, one for rare movies, one for graphics stuff, one for music and on and on. Managing my ratio among all these sites at once is impossible, especially since the atmosphere is so competitive and people are buying seed boxes to help their ratio out. Yeah, ok, I get great speeds, but what does that matter. If I use the great speeds, I get banned.

Furthermore, some of these sites don’t have great speeds. The chess site I’m on (the only one out there) has been effectively out of service for months. All the games sites are way, way slower than old Demonoid was. And tons of sites have these clicky politics stuff happening (waffles).

Demonoid got the information out there. Who cares if people sometimes were leeching, it didn’t hurt the swarm. The goal is to get the data out there. I didn’t leech at Demonoid, and I find it much harder to maintain a ratio at private sites (especially when I’m split between 9 different sites). This makes it harder for me to download, not easier. What is the point of having well seeded files if you can’t download any of them.

Demonoid managed to make the perfect economy. ‘Money’ or upload was flowing fast and hard. Anyone who wanted to seed could get lots of upload, which could then be used to download. On top of that, files were usually well seeded (even rare ones) and the community was good about reseeding dead torrent.

In most private sites the economy is stifled. Many times, they stifle it on purpose so that the only way people can get started is my donating. Any basic economics student could tell you that you need the leeches to counter balance the super seeders. If everyone has to keep a 1.0 ratio exactly then everyone above 1.0 mean someone below 1.0. This doesn’t work.

All you people who resent leechers because they aren’t ‘giving back to the community’ are just like people who don’t like pirates because they aren’t ‘earning what they’re getting’. You are missing the point of file sharing. The point is to spread information. Every torrent site has a responsibility to support as many leechers as it can. Firstly, this’ll help get the information out there, secondly it’ll help the bit torrent economy. Of course you can take it too far and have a damaged economy where nothing gets seeded well (TPB).

Demonoid had this down perfectly, and that is why demonoid is the best. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something.

41 Apr 11, 2008 at 05:06 by mike18xx

Everybody who posted a torrent to Demonoid with the “private” flag set (as the site’s guidelines recommended) got exactly what they deserved when the site went down: a dead torrent.

Gettin’ edjumacated the hard way is a royal bitch, isn’t it?

Learn not to be studid.

DHT-enabled is the shizzits, and what the MPAA fears above anything — because such torrents are impossible to kill.

42 Apr 11, 2008 at 05:16 by mike18xx

> On top of that, files were usually well seeded (even rare ones)
> and the community was good about reseeding dead torrent.

Blarg. Total bilge.

I know, because I posted there.

Two-step guide to making fabulous torrents that last forever:

1. Create a DHT-enabled torrent with smaller than default piece size for at least five thousand pieces, and with piratebay, torrentbox and one other non-PB tracker (sumo is a good choice). The piratebay tracker must be first on the list of trackers.

2. Post torrent file to piratebay, and if it successfully uploads, then post it to mininova and torrentbox.

That’s it — the meta-indexes will take care of all the rest. Super-seed it to completion, and then walk away. It’ll croak only if you’re completely incompetent in terms of naming, description, or failing to check if competing (and better) torrents of the material already exist.

The site isn’t very private when they have open registrations once a month.

I recall their registration being open every Friday.

As for someone else who said the “speeds were slow” — maybe yours were, but mine were faster than most everywhere else. I keep Azureus set at 284kB/s down and it would almost always reach be at or near that speed on a well-seeded torrent.

54 Apr 11, 2008 at 06:53 by Doom

Demonoid was great and I sorely miss them; its been gone for a while in my mind. Suprnova has to take my vote for the /greatest/ tracker/site, and there are very adequate and massive trackers now, not the least of which is TPB but the list is longer than my more than adequate phallus. Also, my writing is very small.

55 Apr 11, 2008 at 07:30 by Jack Bauer

It was a decent site. The speeds were not always great but I found almost everything I was looking for. There are trackers with way better speed but they have limited selection such as TL.

56 Apr 11, 2008 at 08:42 by kuroneko

I have been using bittorrent since version 3. Never in my life i have ever used a “private” tracker.

In case i need something something “rare”, i turn to the ed2k/kad network.

IMO a “private” tracker is a big point of failure, something you will become addicted, until the day it goes dowm…

Furthermore, i have never accepted the term “leecher” in the bittorrent protocol. There is no such thing as somebody getting and never giving *anything* back (a real leecher) _unless_ there is excess offer, in which case i would not matter as that upload bandwidth would have remained idle otherwise (Those who give to peers, always get from said peers first).

When “private” trackers came, so did cheating clients. What they do is bother the statistics, trying to overcome some artificial rule. But its painful for public trackers; i especially hate the ones pretending to be seeders when they still need to get pieces (humans & clients think the swarm is seeded and stop seeding!)

Private trackers also break the most important thing: Availability. By forbidding dht, or multitracking, they are the single point of failure. If you put something in a public tracker, it doesn’t matter much if one or two trackers go down, the content keeps flowing. Its in the hands of the community of peers.

All i see with “private” tracking are disadvantages, things the bittorrent protocol was not made for. If you like ratios, why not go with Direct Connect then?

Bittorrent shines most when lots people have access to the content, restricting this access only works against the protocol. Yes, even what you call “leechers” are helping in a moment of release. Say, they shared 20% of what they get, who cares when there are so many? If there was a limitation with supply, they would have gotten the content last anyway.

Availability is the most important, speed is second. This needs at least a single REAL seed. All this seed needs to do is give a different block to each peer and let them sort the rest. “Private” tracking endangers availability for a flawed promise of speed.

Yeah … bring back the 128 rips and transcoded flacs … :-(

58 Apr 11, 2008 at 11:52 by me

Never got a fake torrent ever from Demonoid. And I used it for over 3 years. The thing about Cemonoid was that due to it’s community spirit, it encouraged leechers to think about their behaviour. Which usually meant they became seeders.
Demonoid ruled.
End of.

Good Luck Sir, and we look forward to the return.

Thanks

61 Apr 11, 2008 at 13:12 by Munkyboy

@ kuroneko

While I understand what your saying private trackers do go against the protocol’s of BT. However the advantages of the outway the disadvantages. Speed is always better than public. The content is alway good and what you expect. and it will be labelled correctly (on scene trackers). the public ones are unsecure (you dont know who is in the swarm monitoring your ip.) Full of crap rip’s, fake files, virus etc.. Thats why I dont use public trackers any more. not because i like ratio’s but because public trackers are very frustrating.

62 Apr 11, 2008 at 14:17 by anonymous coward

The mere variety provided by Demonoid was the best. Though bt-chat has about the same variety it is certainly not the same quality. All of the private sites I belong to seem to not even compare in variety or longevity of torrents. Sure they have better download speeds.

goodbye Deimos and thanks for the ride

for all the guys like myself who were there from day 1 on Demonoid it genuinely hurts to see this happen today. when you grow up with a site admin you know who he is, what he does, why he does it. Deimos was trusted

the most recent history of Demonoid has been chaotic and full of confusion and uncertainty. Demonoid has not been acting in the interests of members, Demonoid has been busy with its own business. the people who watch that business indicate a difficult negotiation and handover after a sale

none of us knows this new admin. Deimos selling the site has to say “a new administrator - a close friend of mine” because the site would be worthless if he did not. after all the strange jumps of the past year, who do you trust?

i will be watching, along with others, and we will out the new owners. we already know who was interested to buy, only now we need the evidence. what is interesting is that they have gone so far to place the servers out of MAFIAA reach in an attempt to dodge confrontations with MAFIAA country organisations e.g. CRIAA, when it was not necessary

one thing torrent site operators can do is attempt to rent a server from the ISP hosting the Demonoid boxes. go try it and see what happens

keep very aware of the huge profits available in the USA from tracking filesharers and sending the $20,000 cease and desist and pay up or go to court letters. it is a multi-million dollar business

everything about the letter from Deimos and everything surrounding events stinks of corporate action and activity

warning: they have all your logs. do NOT login to the new Demonoid with your old nickname. if you must then re-register and use a proxy. you have been warned

First of all, h33t sucks big time. Nothing more aggravating than once a week getting a PM demanding donations because “We can’t pay the servers & our bill is due”. Excuse me but what bill is due once a week? Second of all, it seems to me your real concern is fear of the competition coming back. If Deimos was going to sell us users out for a price, he would have done so long a go when the site first went down. not now months upon months later when half the members have already gone elsewhere.

LOL at all the comments on this….I too belong to several private trackers…and frequently use public ones too…..Of which most are total crap….
The private ones….have the same stuff the public ones do….but not much in the way of rare stuff….the public ones….infested with crap…fakes, virus…etc…
In all the time at demonoid….never got a fake….never got a virus….period….
I sure can’t say that about any of the others private or public….
And finding rare stuff….forget it….all you find is the same files from tracker to tracker….all from the same source…and all arguing over who put it up 1st…..
Who cares anyway??? And topsites….they never had anything that you couldn’t find on demonoid….period.
86 Apr 11, 2008 at 21:07 by Not Best Then What Is

Nah nah nah nah threads never appeal to me - [that's sort of a lie - but never mind]

My point is this - when you say “Demonoid was not the best” - okay - back up your statement. What is the best? Give links.

I loved demonoid. Why?

1
It was easy to find stuff - movies, music, software and things like ufc vidoes.

2
I could count on the comments - I knew what was shit, what was possibly shit and what was worth uploading.

And if some clown uploaded a movie in the English section that was in Spanish, Italian or Polish or whatever - somebody was always quick to point out the problem.

3
The forum was useful (when the site was up that is).

4
It was easy to keep up your ratio. All you had to do was seed. The site was so busy uploading wasn’t necessary.

5
It saved me volumes of time - if I wanted a virus free copy of software or some obscure French film - whatever I was looking for - I always started by search first at demonoid.

===

The second best site was and is The Pirate Bay. But it’s not nearly as easy to know what’s what.

An example - ufc 83 will happen in a couple weeks. And since TPB is an open tracker it will be *entirely* hit or miss to find out which torrents are real and which are fake. And the comments are useless and inaccurate.

you guys dont remember lokitorrent that sold out for $1M to the MPAA?

the MPAA ran lokitorrent for 3 months until LD at http://www.h33t.com outed them by reporting the change of ownership on demonoid. immediately the MPAA close lokitorrent because of fears of allegations of unlawful practices in the USA

the filesharing logs from lokitorrent were used to prosecute 10,000’s of filesharers in the USA and were the basis for the current multi-million dollar extortion racket in the US where pseudo-law firms send letters to filesharers demanding $20,000 or go to court with costs estimated at $250,000

DEMONOID is owned by the MAFIAA

DEMONOID is a trap

128 Apr 11, 2008 at 23:49 by Myself

Demonoid is the worst “private” tracker out there. It might as well be a public tracker for the fact that the invites are handed out like candy and the torrents can be downloaded without an account. Another reason is that my speeds on Demonoid were usually slow as well.

Yet, although I don’t like to use Demonoid at all, I think it is good that it is back up because it is one more slap in the face of the MPAA/RIAA retards.

I’ll tell them the same thing I tell all the other bill collectors. “See my credit report? Add it to it cause you can’t get blood out of a turnip.” They can get the court judgement all day long, they can’t get money I don’t have.

I am not sure if I can trust this new Demonoid, I think I’ll let you guys test the waters, I’ll stick to sites I can trust, like http://www.h33t.com/ and if I’m going to take risks with trackers, I’ll do it on TPB, I know they have the balls to stand up to the MAFIAA.

i’ve been logged in and all is still there just as it should be, just as Deimos promised all those months ago when it went down. And I got news for you, your IP is logged on every site you visit and you never know who is doing what with that either, so if that is how you feel you really should just turn off your PC and pull the internet plug.

Set firewall
intusion prev.
tcp udp port range 49152 through 65535
for your bt client

personal firewall
do the same for port that you use
A guide to do this is at portfoward.com under firewall

Also use Phoenix Labs » PeerGuardian 2 Doing these things should go a long way to keep Anti p2p off

Bitching will get you no where.
Sharing is what it’s all about.
Leeching is part of the equation. Who wants to deal with ratios that are unrealistic. If the admins at Oink weren’t such a pain in the ass, it would have been a pleasure to use.
Demonoid is a community. It’s a pleasure to be part of a group who are open to making things better for all of us.

As today the site is open and ratios and everything is as it was before.I love this site.Demonoid simply the best.

goodbye Deimos and thanks for the ride

for all the guys like myself who were there from day 1 on Demonoid it genuinely hurts to see this happen today. when you grow up with a site admin you know who he is, what he does, why he does it.

DO USE sites with communities in a relationship with their operators. do use sites you can trust

http://www.h33t.com/quote

First of all, h33t sucks big time. Nothing more aggravating than once a week getting a PM demanding donations because “We can’t pay the servers & our bill is due”. Excuse me but what bill is due once a week? Second of all, it seems to me your real concern is fear of the competition coming back. If Deimos was going to sell us users out for a price, he would have done so long a go when the site first went down. not now months upon months later when half the members have already gone elsewhere.
and i should gamble my ass on your rocket science assumption that Demonoid is ok ?
If h33t was so bad about money , how much did you get suckered out of before leaving ?
or did you get banned for not donating ?
file sharing is a gamble , i want to go with a winner who represents my best interests http://www.h33t.com

Smells fishy to me, a good time to be paranoid. All my torrents get posted on h33t…. yay comics!

Nice to see Demonoid back after quite a long time. Guys we need to support as and when we could, let be financialy or morally so that we keep it runing.

I wish our old and new Admin all the best for their future endeavors.

I trust LD not to lie. He is a dedicated site admin who really believes in file sharing not just as a fun thing, but as a world changing cause for freedom of information and benefit especially to the poorer citizens of Earth. Now honesty and being correct in your facts and reasoning are not always the same I must confess. I can’t speak of my own knowledge. I do know that h33t .com is a safe, fast growing, friendly community with a tracker that blocks the bad guys,. Is it as big as demonoid was? No. About 17,0000 torrents right now. Neither is demonoid. Demonoid will have to rebuild. New Demonoid is Demonoid in name only. Why take the chance? h33t is safer than demonoid ever was. The MPAA and RIAA ARE out to get you, those are demonstrable facts.

Nothing ever approached Demonoid. Class y torrents always. I upped on the first day. Hey, take my IP address and shove it up ya arse. Demonoid is back.

Demonoid was & is the number one site (other then http://www.themixingbowl.org for musik). loads of torrents are only on Demonoid & you always know what your getting. however you dont need to be a member to download from there, also i agree it is free leech heaven.

Hmmmm..been d/l-ing for a couple days and seeding pretty good yet my ratio stays unchanged. It’s the same as it was in Niv. when Demonoid went down.

193 Apr 17, 2008 at 17:17 by somewhere in Canada

just received email from “GateKeeper” at Demonoid.com saying they’re up and running.

194 Apr 17, 2008 at 18:56 by notprivate

Demonoid was never private. The tracker was always public. While open enrollment to the _WEBSITE_ was limited, I think this only added to the quality of the torrents. I love TPB, but the quality was muuuch better on demonoid.

195 Apr 18, 2008 at 07:59 by HAHAHAHA

Listen up dumb biatches and bastages..

It’s so damn funny to watch the utter spam going on from other sites saying demonoid is a trap and whatnot.. maybe it is, maybe it’s not.. but how about you other site admins and minions shut the fuck up.

97% of all email is spam, do we really need 97% of all comments being spam as well?

Time will tell if Demoniod is REALLY back, in the meantime, if your LEETA$$FKNTORRENTSITE is the bomb, you will do well, if not then cya.

Final thought…. shut your pie hole until you have something interesting to say.

Note to everyone: demonoid.cc is not a new domain, they had it a while ago as a backup.
why they need a backup?
www.demonoid.cc 62.149.24.66 is online hosted in Ukraine

who the fuk are these guys and what is with the new domain name?
You are such dumbasses. The .cc was the domain registered to give Canadian users a workaround when Demonoid disallowed users from Canada. So much 4 u being a knowlegeable admin, Mr h33t! lol
the MPAA ran lokitorrent for 3 months until LD at http://www.h33t.com outed them by reporting the change of ownership on demonoid.

Fuk u, your lies & FUD, lacadick. Ooops, I mean lacadaemon (h33t admin). Only a true dickwad would believe that bull

Its so obvious that half the posts here are from lacadick using his own site name and a whole bunch of other aliases. Notice how there is h33t.com this and h33t.com that. Not one other site admin posted here. Prolly cos they aren’t starved for members! FFS, we weren’t born yesterday. Go fuk yrslf with yr new member recruiting & uncalled for biased site-bashing bullshit
