Demonoid Faces Prolonged Downtime After DDoS Attack

A severe DDoS attack has brought down one of the most famous BitTorrent trackers. Demonoid has been inaccessible to its millions of users for more than a day and is expected to remain offline for quite some time. The tech admin of the troubled BitTorrent tracker told TorrentFreak that the issues at hand are not easy to fix, and suggests that aside from the DDoS there might have been an attack from another angle.

demonoidDemonoid is one of the biggest torrent sites around, and has been for more than half a decade.

Over the years the site has had its fair share of downtime, sometimes disappearing for months on end.

Yesterday, a million plus Demonoid users noticed that they could no longer access the site. Instead of the usual welcome screen users were confronted with a “server busy” message, suggesting that the BitTorrent tracker is facing technical difficulties.

TorrentFreak got in touch with the tech admin of the site who informed us that they are in serious trouble. Demonoid was overloaded by a DDoS attack which hit the server hard, resulting in a series of problems that may take a while to address.

“It started as a DDoS but then it caused a series of problems. These problems need to be fixed before the site can go back up, and it’s a complicated fix this time,” the Demonoid admin told TorrentFreak.

Aside from the DDoS assault, Demonoid’s server may also have been compromised by another attack.

“There might have been an attack from another angle, an exploit of sorts, but it’s hard to tell right now without a full check of everything,” the admin says.

While Demonoid is determined to return to its full glory, it might take a while before the site is up and running again. After an exodus of staff earlier this year there is only one person available to work on server issues, so progress is slow.

“Our human resources became limited in the last few months. All tech issues are handled just by me now and there is no one else to take the job,” the admin told us, adding that his time is also limited by real life issues that take priority.

“I’ll fix the site as soon as possible, but it might be a while this time,” the admin says.

In recent years Demonoid has been in the cross-hairs of several anti-piracy outfits. It was pressured to move out of Canada by the CRIA and most recently the MPAA and RIAA reported Demonoid as a “rogue site” to the U.S. Government. However, there is no indication that the current attacks at Demonoid are anti-piracy related.

For the millions of Demonoid users there’s no other option than to wait, once again.

lol no real protection when nowadays 50 000 bots is the norm http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/study-finds-the-average-price-for-renting-a-botnet/6528

      • http://www.facebook.com/newton.antony Newton Antony

“Hello. If you want to continue having your site operational, you must pay us 10 000 rubles monthly. Attention! Starting as of DATE your site will be a subject to a DDoS attack. Your site will remain unavailable until you pay us. The first attack will involve 2,000 bots. If you contact the companies involved in the protection of DDoS-attacks and they begin to block our bots, we will increase the number of bots to 50 000, and the protection of 50 000 bots is very, very expensive.
You will also receive several bonuses. 1. 30% discount if you request DDoS attack on your competitors/enemies. Fair market value ddos attacks a simple site is about $ 100 per night, for you it will cost only 70 $ per day. 2. If we turn to your competitors / enemies, to make an attack on your site, then we deny them.”

Cloudflare is located in the USA, it’d be dumb to host a torrent site through a USA proxy. RIAA would target it.

Lulzsec was a small static HTML website so that’s why Cloudflare was great for it (DDoS isn’t as halmful to a static HTML website). Also, Lulzsec published files that were (as far as I’m aware – maybe they were against privacy laws?) protected under freedom of speech but torrents aren’t in America as we all know.

yeah it looks like Demonoid is going to shut down just like BTJunkie did. With only one guy running the site and the typical “I have a real life blah blah blah” excuse, it is inevitable. Don’t get me wrong, maybe the guy is busy in life, but I see that excuse thrown around all the time, especially by emulator authors who like to ditch projects and disappear of the face of the earth.

your “getting married” comment for all we know could be a lie.
or what ever example.. just because someone says something doesn’t mean its true.
I can’t believe i had to say that ..sad

        • http://twitter.com/Keyo_co alex.

Uh, you just said it yourself ‘Donate’ no one is forcing people to donate to these sites, it takes a lot of effort to keep one of these sites running for a long time, they give up their own time and money for people, so why are people surprised when they actually have things to do in their life apart from run the website?

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/MRGIBKOUCJWBDFGPOPMMRCM6ZQ redneck_detector

I think you take the hilarity ‘tag’. Hands down.

Watch out, demonoid’s down time is a direct attempt to draw you out into the open, just because they say they’re down, doesn’t mean it’s true. Now they know which bushes and trees to hide their surveillance teams in….oh, the horror, the conspiracy, the deceit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Hi_der

           Demonoid doesn’t have donation spam

To Tobias O:  Wow, lol! ok, if you say so! Did someone in the biz ask you to post here?

    • goodfold2

just because you “see that excuse thrown around all the time”, you take it to mean that in this particular instance it will mean the end of a useful reputable site. “Trust issues” isn’t exactly the phase i’m looking for here, and maybe you end up being right, but it surely seems more likely that the guy is simply trying to explain why it’s going to take a while to fix the problem, seeing as he’s one person.

    • 7117notes7117

To John D’oh:  Ummmm…from what I understand he’s basically a volunteer. Unless you’re going to pay him to take care of Demonoid and whatever personal and/or family life he has a first responsibility to…? The website Demonoid is not an entitlement **in that sense** (before anyone decides to give that a meaning I do not intend), it’s a gift. And the reason it has been passed from admin to admin is because everyone who has worked to keep it going believes in it’s importance in the world.

I make art and write and take my work quite seriously. Even with this being true: the copyright monitors along with their buddies, the copyright police are seeing the world inside out. One day they’ll note the error of their ways. Esp. since, as proven by ** independent** studies (not the secretly related company sponsored ones) , the film industry, for example, is not losing out financially.

getting the site operational again is obviously top priority. next in line is to find out, assuming they dont know already, who is responsible for the attack, although i dont think it takes too much in the way of imagination to hazard a guess, given it has happened before. once that is known, the next step should be to report the perpetrator. after all, running a torrent site is not illegal, carrying out a DDoS attack is!!

This just goes to show that demonoid is not a torrent site you can trust, I still think for the ‘long term’ thepiratebay wins

I mean 1 person in charge? nah, good site but i don’t see it lasting long or at least staying online :/

    • Sean

I’ve never gotten a single virus from Demonoid and its easy to use. Also its not run by one guy it said they only have one tech person right now who can deal with server issues.

    • xpmule

       agreed
the site/owner track record speaks for itself

its common courtesy so to inform your users of whats going
especialy when many of them have given donations

imagine if facebook had been run the same way

And yeah i’m registered there but i find it useless.
ugly design and crappy search result system and its like
any other place loaded to the hilt with p2p noobs.
Also the rules for uploaders is kinda dumb.
For example if i want a Flac album i will go to rutracker.org
Their uploader rules are how it SHOULD be done .

P2P sucks its full idiots and garbage

There are thousands of free ebooks you can get at Amazon, B&N, and Smashwords. You don’t have to steal them.

        • anon

Oh come on Missy – file sharing is more Robin Hood than Al Capone. You’re sounding like the Sheriff of Notttingham. The torrent scene is our Sherwood Forest. Honestly you think that when I “steal” an e-book and give it to someone around the other side of the world who pays me nothing for the “stolen” book that this is crime. Like I said – Robin Hood.

        • Guest

True, there is no need to shoplift … there are still plenty of torrent sites. You can also get free ebooks through your public library.

I’ve been going to used bookstores lately.

    Hey Ernesto

*** ENLIST SOME HELP from Demonoid Users and TF users and GET THEM IN CONTACT with the Demonoid Tech Admin so we can get the site up faster***

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I’m positive that many members would pitch in time and resources to see demonoid come back to life. I would. Toss him my email. I’m an INFOSEC specialist – I could definitely harden the boxes against this sort of attack in the future.

  • B_Me

Demonoid is a great resource for finding books of all genres. I hope that they could get things straightened out soon and come back better than before.

I’m not a tech person so bear that in mind when I ask this:

Is there a way to search for a book/app/movie/whatever from Demonoid via google? I mean like how there’s a work-around to find magnet links for those who are blocked from TPB (see previous TF article here: http://torrentfreak.com/unblocking-the-pirate-bay-the-hard-way-is-fun-for-geeks-120506/ ), is there a work-around to get material from Demonoid? Thanks in advance.

  • Trelew

It wouldn’t surprise me if some government/corporate hacker(s) took down Demonoid.  I read in article and in a couple of forums that several IT now have a professional “hacker” on retainer to do special projects like this.  Now how much truth to this rumour I don’t know but it wouldn’t surprise me in the bit

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IJO4HRQLNLX57T7P7DZ2FUWILE gabriel

Well, we all shared files before the days of torrents. They may stop sites that allow you to search for what you want, but there are so many ways around it, it’s ridiculous. Look: We are too damn cheap to pay for stuff we can easily steal. The other day I went to the cinema to see the new Batman film, and I wish I’d just downloaded it and saved some money. I feel I was robbed. Now, I must download a pirate movie just on principal. But damn! Demonoid was the best. The other sites are all about movies, TV shows and dozens of fake torrents ofstuff that hasn’t even hit cinemas. (No I WON’T fill in your survey, because there IS no password, because you DON’T have a copy of the movie)

    • boredlameb*stard

…and lol at all the saps who try the site’s surveys again and again in the belief that the link they’ll get is for the upcoming (or any recent) movie/game/file.

After an exodus of staff earlier this year there is only one person available to work on server issues” Well, if I were running the Demon show I would also want the world to think that the site is all run simply by one person, no staff at all.  Nobody home, nobody to drag into any court.  Makes sense to me.  I would even go so far as to say it is run by a monkey, no humans are involved (LOL)

But also I was taught to back up, and then back up again.  So I would think that they have a back up copy of the site, even if it is outdated by a day or two.  Yes, those 3tb drives some in handy don’t they?  I’ve filled up two of them and counting. (LOL).  So a set of jumper cables, and a few 3tb drives, and they should have this thing up and running in no time.

“While Demonoid is determined to return to its full glory, it might take a while before the site is up and running again. After an exodus of staff earlier this year there is only one person available to work on server issues, so progress is slow.”

I’m saddened by the first 25 posts I read. I’ve been a Demonoid member for almost as may years as they’ve been in existence. I’ve patiently waited through their past trials and tribulations. They have always been able to return. I expect no less this time. Yet if this is the end of Demoinoid, then I say thank you. It was a great run.
To all critics, shut the fuck up. Consider being supportive of the effort it takes to maintain a site of this magnitude.
I would make an offer myself, but admittedly, at 63 years of age, and not having any coding experience, I would not be of much help. What I can do is be supportive and patient and express my gratitude for the site and anticipate it eventual return.
Thank you Demonoid…Hope to see you again soon.

I could not agree with you more. I have a lot of support experience which I could offer up remotely if there was a way that it could be done.
Demnoid is the best out there, I don’t look elswhere for what I want  and we must try to help any way that we can.

    • ScrewEwe2

Totally agree with you Axxa. I’m 57 myself and some folks do seem to have a tough time with patience, because everyone has gotten used to instant this and instant that. I’m sure you remember how damn slow it was in the late 90′s to download a single 128kbps mp3 on a 56K modem, especially considering no one ever actually achieved 56K. Demonoid will be back up when it’s back up, and ’till then there are a lot of other options. When Suprnova permanently shutdown in 2004 there weren’t a lot of other torrent sites available at the time. Today there are 100′s. Seek and ye shall find.

I posted this yesterday “Try to be patient, I’m sure we’ll know more soon and Demonoid will be back up like usual. This is a good lesson. Don’t take for granted that someone or something you love will always be there.”

Probably something to do with them opening membership registrations very frequently this year. Guess they were picking up the the Pirate Bay members from the UK and other countries that didn’t want to go the VPN route. Ideal time to attack – puts off any newbies they picked up and makes Demonoid look as though the sites protection is weak. Got to be the music and film industry behind this – can’t see it being a hacker group or another torrent site.

    • Reality

H33T is a great site for comics, but I am not sure what you are talking about regarding Piratebay. They have just about every comic that Demonoid had, including EVERY new comic released.

  • Missy

I’d like to thank whoever did it. My book has been pirated there for months despite several take-down notices. Here’s a novel idea for all the whiners who now have to find another place to get their books… How about actually buying it! Stop stealing from the authors who work months to create a book. The vast majority of us are not rich. In fact, most of us work a day job, too, because we don’t make enough money from our books to even pay the light bill every month.

    • Fredrika

      > “My book has been pirated there for months despite several take-down notices.”

Please stop spreading lies. No books are available at Demonoid, only legal non-copyrighted torrent files, which people have a legal right to share, despite your ignorant takedown notices.

      > “Here’s a novel idea for all the whiners who now have to find another place to get their books… How about actually buying it!”

No sane capitalist would pay for something which he can easily manufacture himself for free.

      > “Stop stealing from the authors..”

You seem confused. No one is stealing anything from you. What you had before you will still have. Check for yourself.

      > “In fact, most of us work a day job, too, because we don’t make enough money from our books to even pay the light bill every month.”

That’s how entrepreneurship and the free market works for those entrepreneurs who can’t manage to sell anything. Welcome to reality.

      • Missy

My book was downloaded over 900 times from this site. That is over $1200 in stolen royalties from me. Even more than that was stolen from my publisher. Period. You are the one spreading lies. And trying to justify your theft is pitiful. If it helps you sleep better at night… Good for you. But I’m glad the site is down and I hope every site like it everywhere is shut down. I don’t care who is behind it.

        • Fredrika

          > “My book was downloaded over 900 times from this site.

Incorrect, Demonoid hosts no books. Only legal non-copyrighted torrent files.

          > “That is over $1200 in stolen royalties from me.”

Nothing has been stolen from you, look in your pocket and you will find that what you had in there before it still there. Since you haven’t sold anything, you obviously don’t deserve any money, that’s how the free market works for all entrepreneurs. Do you have a problem with the free market? Are you advocating communism or a planned economy?

          > “Even more than that was stolen from my publisher. Period.”

Maybe you don’t understand the concept of stealing?

          > “You are the one spreading lies.”

Every single claim i wrote is indeed factual exactly as it was written.

          > “And trying to justify your theft is pitiful.”

I haven’t stolen anything, nor have i tried to justify anything.

          > “If it helps you sleep better at night… Good for you.”

My sleeping is thankfully not affected by your misconceptions about these topics.

          > “But I’m glad the site is down..”

Are you going to go depressed when it comes back up again?

          > “..and I hope every site like it everywhere is shut down.”

In reality more sites like it pop up every day.

          > “I don’t care who is behind it.”

You don’t seem to care to much about the facts either.

        • Joe King

Well, a download does not equal a lost sale. Have you ever been to a book shop where people browse through books and walk out of the shop without buying any books?

Moreover, without p2p you would probably be complaining about why people have not heard about your books and/or are not buying your books anyway…

        • Nobodey

I attempt to bring understand to those whom are not well versed at the subject at hand “Missy”. I will attempt to do so without insulting anyone, but in return I ask you actually read what I say, not just react to what you think I say. Thank you in advance.

What is being said by the folks here is that Demonoid and its various brethren site, do not host any actual copywritten files on its servers. Not books, not movies, nothing. All they are is an index of individuals computers who currently hold those files, allowing for the sharing between individuals, making the individuals, such as myself, the perpetrators as opposed to the website itself. Now what that does is makes sites like Demonoid actually quite legal, as they are breaking no laws whatsoever. To use a library analogy, which I assume you are familiar with the old style of the library, a “torrent file” is but a card from the card catalog, showing you where to find what you are looking for, not the content itself.
Now to address other concerns. Is piracy stealing? By the strict definition: no because nothing is being taken from you. Is it morally good? Probably not no. Is it unlawful? Yes, but with torrents that burden is taken on by the uploaders, and assuming they are not uploading massive amounts of files, almost unprosecutable due to lawyers fees vs potential verdicts.
Lastly, and this is the important part, did this cause you to lose money? That question has been in contention for quite a long time. Ever since the book “Steal This Book” came out people have had an open dialogue about if people will pay to see/read something they can get for free? But here is the kicker. The question had already been answered. You can look at the answer by again, going to your local library. Book piracy has existed, legally, for.. well.. ever. And recently it has been shown in quite a few legitimate studies that piracy actually does increase both the profile of the pirated material and its need in other formats, such as an actual physical copy of the book. You say piracy took 1200 dollars from you, but in actuality, it most likely made you money because of those 900 downloads, how many do you think actually read the book? I am unfamiliar with your work, it might be good, I don’t know, but to download a book is not the same as reading it, most likely a large majority read the first couple pages and then stopped, just as they would at a bookstore or library before actually checking it out or buying it. But those who like the book, who really truly like the book, would not be happy with a subpar pirated copy of it. So you just made a sale you never would have before.
I hope this explains where we are coming from. The gist is quite simple, quality entertainment will profit from piracy, non-quality will fail regardless.
And to talk about book piracy when libraries, although a dying breed, is still in the hearts of many writers..
ps. go ahead and Google “Online Piracy hurt sales”, your results will back up everything I have said. Good luck!

        • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/BL44SFP46SM7OWF536SEXWYBRI Mary

Missy, I write, too. And to be honest with you, I would rather give my books away, because I write FOR people, not for money. There is a feeling of pride when I finish a project, and the best damned critics in the world are those who read the book because they want to, and they want to help people who write, write better. I write because there is a part of me that must write. That part requires me to share with others and hear what others have to say.I don’t get paid, but I can proudly say that more people read my work and are familiar with it because it IS in circulation, and because it’s not sitting on a bookstore shelf collecting dust. And by sharing it with others, it will surely gain in esteem. And by sharing, I get a loyal following. They know that someday my novel or NF book will be on the regualr market, but they will still buy it if they can afford it because they’re already in my corner.

Making friends is a goal that I love! And downloaders have a way of appreciation like no others.

I didn’t stumble upon the dirty little site. I was notified that my book was posted there. It’s for sale. It’s not free. If you want to read it, buy it. You don’t have to buy it. No one is going to force you to. But if you don’t pay for it, you should not be enjoying my hard work for free.

        • Fredrika

          > “I was notified that my book was posted there.”

It wasn’t. Please stop confusing your book with a legal non-copyright torrent file.

          > “It’s not free.”

The act of manufacturing a copy with your own property as people filesharing does is free, try it yourself and you will find this to be a fact.

          > “If you want to read it, buy it.”

Or borrow it, or manufacture a copy of it. There have always been more options than just buying a copy.

          > “But if you don’t pay for it, you should not be enjoying my hard work for free.”

During the last 150 years people have been able to enjoy books for free without buying copies or paying for anything. It’s been that way since long before you were born. Where you not aware of this?

        • chim

Have you considered the possibility, perhaps, the reason people aren’t buying your book is a result of your poor sentence formulation, and not evil, money-stealing torrent fans? There are multiple sentences you began with conjunctions, which (if you’ve ever taken an elementary writing class) as an ‘author’ you should know is frowned upon.

Before you mutilate my comment and ride my ass on how I could have perfected a sentence here; I am in no way claiming I have perfect writing skills, but I am also not claiming to be a if-only-torrents-didn’t-exist-I-would-be-successful ‘author’, such as yourself.

“But if you don’t pay for it, you should not be enjoying my hard work for free.”

You must either be a poorly prepared shill or new to publishing … books are not camcordered blockbusters.

Book and magazine publishers have included “pass-alongs” in their business model for many, many decades. Magazine publishers boast about it to advertisers.

When it comes to text, readers absolutely CAN enjoy writers’ hard work for free, and publishers expect a good percentage of readers to do just that. They HOPE that will happen and encourage it when they can.

If that concept makes you uncomfortable you are in the wrong business. Jesus. Publishers would be screwed if even one reader believed you.

WRONG.  It’s free missy.  Oh yes, it’s free.  And good thing it is, anyone who would pay for your book is an illiterate fool.

        • Jonah987

Guess all of us who are ‘renting’ books from our local library are stealing? Since we did not pay for them or for the library card that allowed us to rent them?…I am also a writer and you are confused.

        • Jonah987

And anyone..Missy + upset “Guest” in reply to Missy…. if you still think it’s possible for any of your fellow humans to steal from you you should consider checking out the nature of money a.k.a. ‘fiat currency.’ Most governments have this system so no matter the nation or the name of it’s currency it’s worth checking out a documentary called, “Money As Debt.” You can easily find it online at websites like “Topdocumentaryfilms” …. or for the basics, look up the title on Wikipedia. Then you’ll see how TPTB keep you busy with distractions, such as you believing you should hate other people for ‘taking’ from you.

        • Designsbygina

          so let’s get this straight
before ebooks people went to a bookstore and bought a book then after they read the book they passed it along to all their friends and family to read. So 1 book bought 20 people read for free. I guess in your opinion those people stole from you also, well they didn’t. And furthermore how is going to library any different, did all those people steal from you because they didn’t pay. sharing ebooks is the same concept someone paid for the original, just be happy with that. You probably are getting free advertisement out of it.

    • Stevanbg66

Its true. But there are people on this planet which cannot by some book whatever the reason is (they are poor or book is not published in their country).. I’m sure that someone who likes the book and has possibility – will buy it..

      • Missy

There are hundreds, thousands of books available for free at Amazon. I myself even have two books posted there for FREE. There are more free books available there than any person could read in an entire lifetime. And let’s not forget that there are plenty of libraries where you can borrow free books. The fact that there are poor people is just another pitiful excuse to justify theft.

I give away books all the time. But I wrote them. I should be able to choose who I give the fruits of my labor to, and how much of that labor I wish to give away. But guess what? I can’t even give away the book I wrote if they are under contract with a publisher.

It took me nearly a year to write the book that was being pirated at Demonoid because I did it on nights and weekend after working 40-55 hours a week at the day job. So far, I’ve earned about $50 in royalties. Big bucks, right?  Sure would have been nice to collect the $1200 owed to me by those who took my work without paying. Might have brought my hourly rate for the labor to write the book up to about $3 — less than half of minimum wage.

People will pay $4 for cup up Starbucks coffee, but they don’t want to pay $3.49 for my book that will give them hours of entertainment. Oh yes, they want the entertainment. They just don’t want to pay for it. They would rather steal it.

        • Stevanbg66

“People will pay $4 for cup up Starbucks coffee, but they don’t want to pay $3.49 for my book”Its true and sad. its not only economic crises, but in mind too. I just can speak for myself. I have more than 6000 books in my house. Real books, not e-books. All of them payed by me and my late father. I love books, but fact are this: I live in Belgrade, Serbia (ass of the world – no electronic payment), country with more than 50% unemployed people (those not in political parties), I am unemployed more than 4 years and Im not lazy. I have son 4 years old (doesn’t speak yet) and we live with 100e a month, sent by my mother. Electricity was cut twice since january 2011. Its not a nice thing to live with kid who is afraid of dark. I have 46 years and people here think that is old age, no one reply to my CV. And still I like Internet which is priority for information and mind. People owe me about 7000e (from better times) and I cannot collect it, because they don’t have it, its crises. What am I suppose to do, kill them, burn their sites down..

The most torrented books are bestsellers.
How, by your logic, does this happen?

        • Embry221

You’re the same goof who spammed all over the ZDNet article! I knew there had to be only one of you.

You wrote a dime-a-dozen romance novel that nobody wanted to pay to read but that a couple hundred people took a peek at. They gave you their time and attention. I am blown away that you would waste your off hours on blog after blog implying that people started thinking about books like this when ebooks were released. I’ve spent days in B&N reading parts of books I end up not paying for.

Musicians and filmmakers say “it’s like stealing” because they were forced to change their whole business model. They’re wrong but the emotions make sense. Not in your case.

Every writer and publisher I know uses “free” readers to build a fan base, then monetizes it. People have been doing this online with great success for 20 years now. Yes, with novels too. Sharing is an even bigger opportunity now because of Demonoid and ereaders.

I assume somebody is paying you for these posts with all the inappropriately used buzzwords and talking points .. but seriously, you can do better. These posts are only making you look bad when you should be using blogs, websites and other sharing tools to make yourself look good.

My partner is an author, published by one of the Big 6. Her book has been out a couple years but hasn’t recouped, so she has no royalties. Like you, she wrote it in her spare time. It showed up on file-sharing sites after it had been out for a little while. She doesn’t give a crap. She knows most people who would download it probably wouldn’t have paid for it anyway. But you apparently feel that everyone who downloads things for free would’ve paid for them, if there were no other option. You both can’t be right. One of you has to be wrong. I suspect it’s you.

        • Jonah987

Missy, you are not making any sense – and clearly you do not realize you’re arguing against yourself. Especially because you actually *do* seem to know about libraries (free resources for books and e-books). So what are you going on about? By the way, perhaps not everyone here will agree with this and that’s okay. But imho, books are not written *by* us. They are written *through* and/or *via* us. But community/one-ness/esoteric considerations aside, even if that is ever proven to not be true, torrents (for whatever type of file) would still *not* be stealing.

        • sweet cocoa

some of us cannot  get access to these free books becaue of our ip address because we are from a different country and buying on the internet is diifcult.

      • sweet cocoa

i agree many of the books i  get  i cannot find in my country, and sometimes you cannot even buy it because of ur ip address

    • http://twitter.com/bohemianroxie rosanna morris

I don’t discount that writing a book is hard work. And I have spent a small fortune buying books. But when it comes to new authors; they have an easier time finding a larger audience if people can check them out first.
Demonoid has actually had authors come on there and upload their own books for exposure. It’s not all bad.

      • Missy

Rosanna, I’ve earned a big whopping $50 from a book that took me nearly a year to write. But it was download 900+ times at Demonoid. I should have received over $1200 in royalties for that. That would have brought me close to about $3 an hour for my labor.

I have 2 stories for free at Amazon, B&N, and Smashwords so that people who haven’t read my work before can try it for free. But the ones that are for sale?  Those should not be stolen. Period. Any attempt to justify the piracy is nothing more than a pitiful excuse and an obvious effort to soothe a guilty conscious.

        • Adam S.

Sorry, but too many studies prove file-sharing helps book and music sales.

        • Demonoid2012

Missy, just because people downloaded your book doesn’t mean they actually liked or enjoyed your book, had time to even read it, or knew that it existed in the first place. You’re makin’ too many assumptions here. I have downloaded thousands of ebooks that I’ve never even read, because I can’t read thousands of books at one time. I don’t have any problem with buying a book. When you have access to thousands of ebooks, you download a lot of them just because you can, not because you really wanted it in the first. If I read a ebook that’s actually worth buying, and I have benefited greatly from it, then I would’n't have a problem buying it – but I can’t read thousands of books at once and then decide on which one is actually worth buying. About time I get to finally read the whole book, completely, it’s already a new version of it. And, lastly, downloading is not stealing. Instead of being glad that Demnoid is down, you should be sad, because, like I said, if it wasn’t for Demonoid, a lot of people wouldn’t even know that your book even existed.

        • http://twitter.com/bohemianroxie rosanna morris

           Missy,
Most of the new authors I personally discover now are usually long established authors that I am just discovering through torrent. I have supported budding new authors by buying their books on Smashbooks and Amazon.
But they cultivated their fanbase. It’s tough to get established these days so many began by giving their books away or at least establishing a rapport with their audience..  by the time they put it on Amazon they have 1k people ready to give them 5 stars and buy their books in support.. Check out how Scott Sigler became a best selling author. He’s not adversarial towards those that have an interest in his work. If you’re good enough it will work.. but it takes time.
But a romance novelist has nothing to fear from me anyway. And that is a dense category where it is hard to stand out. The main thing is getting anyone’s attention in the first place.
What you’re not seeing is that people that never would have bought your book in the first place might torrent it..If they like what they read..you have reached a wider audience. Good luck.

        • Wallace

”But it was download 900+ times at Demonoid. I should have received over $1200 in royalties for that”

Each time you say it, it makes the same lack of sense. People don’t owe you royalties for simply reading your book, dude.

We also don’t you royalties for reading your insane number of posts on this subject. Hell, you should pay US.

I don’t have the specific references, but I have seen very respectable studies, along with respected anecdotal evidence, that suggests sales go up — significantly — when a book is “pirated.”

I only wish someone had pirated my book; I’d have done it myself, but I really don’t know how.  Any press is good press.  And the only real/effective marketing is word-of-mouth. As a result, the real enemy isn’t piracy; it’s obscurity.  That’s why Amazon allows you to give your ebooks away for free, to get attention for them, and hopefully build up that word-of-mouth.

My book, “Twilight for Life: Finding Meaning in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight – and in Life,” was downloaded several thousand times during my “free” run on Amazon (limited to 5 days per every 90), but it takes tens of thousands of free downloads to actually gain traction. Given the limits Amazon places on that, and the wave of new authors out there, torrents are actually a good way to help create more interest/word-of-mouth in your work.

It is a bummer to work for a year writing only to have it come to nothing.  Believe me; I know.  Keep writing — including via social media to continue to promote your book further.  The second-best way to promote your work is to publish more.  Best wishes.

P.S. FWIW, the people here on this board aren’t your enemy either; they are potential customers, now or in the future, who you probably shouldn’t antagonize. Peace.

        • Harrytoms

I have actually learned about new authors when I downloaded bulk romance torrents such as Jenika snow, ciara lake, liliana hart, aline hunter. B/c I liked the books I bought them through Amazon and their other books.
I download thousands of books but 95% of them are not good. I wouldn’t of bought them.
Missy I did download your book in a bulk download. I didn’t like it  I would of never bought it. Good luck with your career.

  • Everyone’s A Writer

Oh my gosh. The so-called “authors” on here are sad. Just because you spent a lot of time on something doesn’t make it good. I see torrents of that Fifty Shades of Grey book, with thousands of seeders, yet it has sold 31 Million copies. If something is worthwhile to someone, they buy it.

What these “authors” don’t understand is the 900 people who download their book do so because it’s free and sounds appealing. Not because they NEED that book. I go see fireworks because they’re free and fun, but no way would I deem them worthwhile enough to pay to see. Basically, you didn’t lose any sales from your book since it’s primary allure is it can be gotten for free. Whatever interest you think exists on a torrent site is because your book can be obtained quickly and free. Is it right that people can read it without buying it? I don’t know, the real question is, do you honestly think your book is good enough to charge people for it? And if that is the case and it is good, enough people will buy it. Harry Potter torrents have been around since the early 2000s, but those books do ok.

    • Embry221

There’s only one, and she’s making the rounds on all the Demonoid stories.

Forget our side – she doesn’t even understand her own industry.

Another shill paid by Megaupload to discredit anti-torrenters.

  • Everyone’s A Writer

You do know that the most downloaded media (books/music/comics/movies) are also typically the highest-selling media products right??? i.e Walking Dead comic, Avengers movie, Hunger Games books

If your book was good, people who could afford it would buy it. The fact that no one is willing to pay for it should tell you a lot about the quality of what you’ve written. Don’t blame others on your lack of success, of the 900 people who downloaded your book, there may be 0 who liked it enough to buy it.

    • Missy

The fact is that few people whether they can afford it or not will pay for something they can get for free elsewhere. And if the 900 people didn’t want it bad enough to pay for it, why did they steal it?

      • Nospam

900 is a very low download number. Very low. This indicates to me that your book was downloaded only by those who download absolutely everything. Further, the fact that you’ve only received $50 in royalties indicates that you’ve sold poorly. I’m sorry, but your book is crap. Not everyone is cut out to be a bestselling author.

      • http://www.facebook.com/chascoxjr Charlie Cox

So if I bought your book and passed it around to 50 of my friends to read, won’t you be losing there too? So in other words, anything we share that someone else made, is illegal?

      • Embry221

Your guilty conscience must drive you nuts when you’re at the dentist looking at all those magazines you didn’t pay for.

      • Bookworm51485

I remember way back when, writing used to be quality. I remember in elementary school once finding a typo in a book and it being a HUGE thing because we’d never seen one before. Now, it’s a norm. The quality of writing has dropped drastically, yet writers want more compensation than they did in the past. I learned my lesson after spending $20+ on a couple of books that were CRAAAAAAP!!!!!! Now, I refuse to purchase a book unless I test it first and judge that it’s quality. I’ve more than once purchased books after I downloaded the torrents because those books were quality and deserved my money (and even gone on to purchase other books by the same author). A majority of people who download books do it for the same reasons that I do and if your book was quality, you would have had more royalties. The fact that you only have $50 in royalties speaks strongly to the level of quality of your writing.

        • http://www.facebook.com/chascoxjr Charlie Cox

You can also say that about movies and music. All they do anymore is remakes of crap we already seen or heard!

      • Jayne

It was probably downloaded *lump sum*…like when somebody shares their *romance* library.  Chances are nobody put in Nita Wick to download your book but got it by accident with a bunch of others.

      • pixie

i’m a painter not a writer so maybe it is different but for me it is ok if people who like my work take a picture of it. If they realy like my work and have the money to pay for it they will.I believe the most important thing is that they like and know my work and that I enjoyed making it.

    • Kelly

Pretty much all books I’ve downloaded are the ones I *need* to read because they’re by authors I love but am “forbidden” to buy digital due to geographical restrictions. They act like I’m not good enough to read their book, like I don’t deserve it because I’m not in the United States or in the US or Canada? Then I’m not buying it. I’m not paying for shipping more expensive than the book, then waiting a month for ta paperback book  that will be brown in two years to actually arrive. No, I’ll download it until they realize the market goes far beyond the end of their arrogant noses.

And, 50 Shades a good book? *snorts* Just because a book is popular doesn’t make it good. The word “mass” as in “mass market” exists for a reason, and it’s not complimentary.

  • Missy

    In response to Fredrika:

    “My

    Incorrect, Demonoid hosts no

Apparently the people who upload and download these books can’t
    even read them.

    > ”That
is over $1200 in stolen royalties from me.”

    Nothing
has been stolen from you, look in your pocket and you will find that what you
had in there before it still there. Since you haven’t sold anything, you
obviously don’t deserve any money, that’s how the free market works for all
entrepreneurs. Do you have a problem with the free market? Are you advocating
    communism or a planned economy?

–I am advocating that people stop making illegal
    copies of copyrighted

    >”Even more than that was stolen from my publisher.
    Period.”

Maybe you don’t understand the concept of stealing?

–I think you are the one who
doesn’t understand the concept if illegal copyright infringement. It is theft
of intellectual property. Theft is stealing.

    > “You are the one spreading lies.”

Every single claim i wrote is indeed factual exactly as it
    was written.

–And you think a judge and jury
    would agree with you?

    > “And trying to justify your theft is
    pitiful.”

I haven’t stolen anything, nor have i tried to justify
    anything.

–If you illegally shared a file
or downloaded one, you have stolen the rights. It is copyright infringement. It
    is theft. It is illegal.

    > “If it helps you sleep better at night… Good for
    you.”

My sleeping is thankfully not affected by your
    misconceptions about these topics.

–I’m sure you do sleep fine.
People who don’t know the difference between right and wrong usually do. They
don’t have a conscience and therefore they do not feel guilt.

    > “But I’m glad the site is down..”

Are you going to go depressed
when it comes back up again?

–No, I will just wait for someone else to take it down again.
    And rejoice once again.

    > ”..and
I hope every site like it everywhere is shut down.”

    In
reality more sites like it pop up every day.

–Yes, I know. Our society has no morals these
days.  Too many people like you who find some asinine way to justify
    theft.

    > ”I
don’t care who is behind it.”

    You
don’t seem to care to much about the facts either.

–The facts are that sites like Napster and
Megaupload were shut down because they were facilitating illegal activity. If
you think you aren’t doing anything wrong, why don’t you put your real name and
address on the sites with your precious torrents?  Let’s see if a court of
law agrees with your “right” to share those files.

    • Smithderek76

Your absolutely right 900 people stole your shitty book that you worked hard on but the truth is if your royalties for it are less than one month of my bills here in New Jersey it seems like you wasted your time writing it anyway. Also if you r smart enough to write a book why the fuck are you stupid enough to come on a torrent site to argue against hard core piracy advocates who don’t care what your ethics or opinions are and who’s minds you could never possible change. Our opinions about piracy are in our best interest (saving that $ you are coveting) while yours are in your best interest (taking our money) so lets agree to disagree and you should tell us the your name and the name of your book so I can make sure to never buy any of your work                                                                                                                             PS YOUR BEAT!

Nobody stole her book. She’s making money per post and  a serious nutjob.

    • ScrewEwe2

      Missy,
you have totally changed my views about the illegal file
      sharing
of your e-books, and thusly, I shall endeavor to never ever
read one of your e-books, because if your e-books are as long winded, whiney
and boring as your post, I am most certain that I will lose interest, after
      about 2 or 3 pages.

      I
promise you Missy, from this time forward, that I will read other authors
e-books offered or obtained by means of illegal file
      sharing
      .

      You also
noted in an earlier post “It took me nearly a year to write the
book that was being pirated at Demonoid because I did it on nights and weekend
after working 40-55 hours a week at the day job. So far, I’ve earned about $50
in royalties. Big bucks, right? Sure would have been nice to collect the $1200
owed to me by those who took my work without paying. Might have brought my
hourly rate for the labor to write the book up to about $3 — less than half of
      minimum wage.”

      Missy,
I’m sorry to say this, but it appears as if your publisher is possibly taking
advantage of you. I wish you luck in trying to get better compensation from
      your publisher.

      > “–Ah.. But those torrent files contained my COPYRIGHTED book.”

No they did not. Please read up on the technical facts regarding torrents before you comment any further.

      > “I am advocating that people stop making illegal copies of copyrighted..”

Possibly so, but since you also do not seem to agree with how the free market works, it looks as if you advocate communism or a planned economy.

      > “I think you are the one who doesn’t understand the concept if illegal copyright infringement. It is theft of intellectual property.”

No it is not. Now you seem to confuse the intellectual work, your book, with intellectual property, which refers to the copyright monopoly. Performing an infringement into a legislative monopoly does not equal theft, This you can verify in both the law and a dictionary.

      > “Theft is stealing.”

Correct, and performing an infringement is not stealing.

      > “And you think a judge and jury would agree with you?”

They already have, all the way up to the supreme court. And they came to the same conclusion, an infringement is never stealing. It might be unlawful, but it sure isn’t stealing.

      > “If you illegally shared a file or downloaded one, you have stolen the rights.”

No, you still have those rights.

      > “People who don’t know the difference between right and wrong usually do. They don’t have a conscience and therefore they do not feel guilt.”

The fact that i understand the basic fundamental difference between an infringement and the completely different crime theft does not mean that i lack a conscience.

      > “No, I will just wait for someone else to take it down again.”

Logically, if you find pleasure from the site going down, you should feel depressed when it comes back and stays up.

      > “Yes, I know. Our society has no morals these days.”

All people have morals, they might not just share your ignorant one.

      > “Too many people like you who find some asinine way to justify theft.”

Maybe the difference is that they understand that it isn’t theft to operate a torrent site? An opinion which both a dictionary, the law, and the courts agree with.

      > “If you think you aren’t doing anything wrong, why don’t you put your real name and address on the sites with your precious torrents?”

Are you saying that you believe yourself to be doing something wrong right now, since you don’t put your real name with your comments?

      > “Let’s see if a court of law agrees with your “right” to share those files.”

I don’t recall having argued regarding whether or not such rights exists?

    • Small Cog

       Missy,

If you lived in a town of say 10,000 people and every one of them had read your book you would be proud wouldn’t you. Now suppose every one of them had borrowed that book from the public library, would you be just as proud? Yes, you would. This is an acceptable situation because it is the norm.

If the MPAA and RIAA had their way they would call all ten thousand townspeople thief’s and demand retribution. But, that would be going against the norm. However, the internet is not part of the norm. So their plan is to tell a lie, long and loud.

Tobacco company’s, oil company’s, corn sugar producer’s, governments have all learned the benefits of telling the “Big Lie”. They tried it with VCR’s, TiVo (DVR), Ford’s Pinto, etc.

It’s time to stop the lie. Would you demand royalty payments from the public library?

Demonoid is a community built on sharing. We share the things we like with thousands of our closest friends. One of these people bought your book and liked it enough to share it with their friends.

Walking in a room full of potential customers and calling them thieves is not conducive for future sales.

SPOILER ALERT: aka – the jig is up.

“Missy” is actually a budding romance novelist by the name of Nita Wick.

I stumbled upon another site while googling Demonoid’s dilemma and found this(with your permission your modships):
    http://www.zdnet.com/demonoid-hit-by-ddos-attack-7000001732/
and reading the comments there especially the bottom one about 900 peopledownloading her book with $1200 in lost sales (cha-ching!) is exactlyas one of her first responses to Fredrika. She also has a website whichI hit to check its validity. Lucky me.

Whatever reason she sees fit to use her real(?) name on one forum anda different name on Torrentfreak is puzzling. Trolling for dollars? Site hits?Legit beef? You be the judge.  I simply wish her the best of luck with her writing, getting her namesout there and adapt-embrace this digital age. If she’s that good, there’snothng to worry about.

I doubt it was the MAFIAA who took down Demonoid. They’ve never shown the brains for something like this. It’s a far more effective approach than suing downloaders.

Anyone into writing knows how hard writers get hit. First the publisher doesn’t pay royalties and with e-books they often don’t even pay an advance. Then you’ve got the book sellers withholding payment for up to a year, then paying off their debts in books. Writers really do get screwed. They don’t have a big corporation backing them up. The only money a writer might see is a couple dollars from each sale. So please be fair to the writers.

    • anon

I disagree. It is highly likely that the attack originates from the very people that oppose Demonoid. The torrent scene is not unsympathetic to new authors and bands. I think the most difficult question facing the torrent scene is how we ensure that change is not destructive to extremes. I think on the whole the torrent scene responds to this with intelligence and awareness. Thats why you don’t see countless VOB releases and most film releases at 700mb use lower quality audio and video settings. Books are a bit different – some people feel that knowledge is transmitted in a purer way with words. People feel very strongly that science, religious, art, history and all other sorts of subjects should be spread freely without censorship or restriction as part of the greatest push in mankinds history to bind humanity together. Whenever I share something I think of the consequences of what I’m doing and in the end I ask myself if my moral compass is pointing in the right direction.

Demonoid is the only site that actually has contemporary books in it. Mind you, I like buying books. I don’t mind it, but Amazon shuts me down with geographical restrictions A LOT. If they don’t let me BUY the books, how the heck am I supposed to get it?

      • Fredrika

        > “How about going to a book store?”

The comment was clearly regarding digital services, not physical books, since Demonoid, Amazon and geographical restrictions was mentioned. For a person who’s interested in digital services visiting a physical book store is not a relevant option.

      • Goosmoo

Really?  The book stores where I live mostly offer just recent releases except for certain niches such as puzzle books, GRE, hypnosis, and other very narrow fields.  People buy online because there is much wider offering of books.  You telling someone to go to a book store to get a book when the person has a hard time just getting it online is not at all helpful.

      • Bookworm51485

I live in a major city. Within an hour of my location, there exists a total of 3 bookstores. And when I say within an hour, I mean to the edge of that boundary in some cases. It’s not so easy these days.

I want you to know that it took me nearly 9 months of work in the evenings and on the weekends to write Designs on Haley. Then I worked another week and a half during edits for it.
Although I would like to write full time, I must work a day job because my royalty checks won’t even pay the electricity bill. I only earn $1.50 per copy sold. This month that’s a little over $50. That’s right. BIG bucks!
And people like you think it’s okay to cheat me out of that measly royalty check by pirating my book. Nearly 800 people have downloaded my book from where you uploaded it. That’s almost $1200 in royalties I *should* have received. Even that would be only be about $1/hour for my labor.
Many authors stop writing because it pays so little. And it pays even less when pirates steal your work.
You think you aren’t hurting anyone. You think it’s no big deal.
    Think again.

Hey Nita, stop whining.  You write a silly romance novel and expect to get rich?  Hell, there are tens of thousands of romance novels out there and they’re all pretty much alike.

‘Nita’. You are guaranteeing no one here ever buys one of your books. Why not just say, “Hey guys, I wrote this book, I understand that no everyone can afford it, but if you like it please consider buying it. Thanks.”

That’s all you have to say, but now it’s too late, the thousands of people who have read your posts now hate you and your books.

      • Harrythomas

Very true. Nita’s ramblings about her stolen books make me never want to buy her books. I have supported authors that admit that file sharing has helped increase their books sales.

    • http://twitter.com/bohemianroxie rosanna morris

Nita may not have all her facts straight about torrenting but some of you guys out there aren’t either. You act like you think you’re entitled to everything free. That everything should be free.
You’re not entitled to anything. Just wait until you have to go out into the world and make a living. See if you want to work for free.
Torrents can work for new artists . But new artists and writers should be respected and supported.
Anyway..some of the attitudes I’ve read remind me of the socialist that support it because they don’t want to do anything themselves. They just want to live off of everyone else.

      • Fredrika

        > “You act like you think you’re entitled to everything free.”

No, people feel entitled to their own property that they have already paid for, and using that property in a manner that gives them value, such as manufacturing copies with it, as people filesharing does. The fact that a legislative monopoly intrudes into people’s property rights and prohibits such manufacturing doesn’t mean that the obviously natural entitlement to one’s own property magically disappears.

        > “That everything should be free.”

Manufacturing copies with one’s own property, as people filesharing does, is free, regardless of what anyone thinks. The price is not up for discussion.

        > “You’re not entitled to anything.”

The entitlement comes naturally from owning one’s own property. Saying that people aren’t entitled to their own property is not an argument. It’s a reversed irrational claim that confuses what it is that has to be justified in the first place, which is the monopoly’s intrusion into people property rights.

        > “Just wait until you have to go out into the world and make a living.”

A rather hypercritical argument coming from the person who seems to defend a legislative monopoly, which excludes the entrepreneur from the free market, where all other entrepreneurs have to operate.

        > “See if you want to work for free.”

All entrepreneurs work for free, that’s how entrepreneurship works on the free market. Do not confuse self chosen entrepreneurs with hired employees. Do you have a problem with how the free market works? Are you advocating communism or a planned economy?

        > “Torrents can work for new artists . But new artists and writers should be respected and supported.”

Disregarding an according to the rules of law illegitimate legislative monopoly does not equal disrespecting authors. Demanding a legislative monopoly which has never been properly justified according to the rules of law however, that’s clearly disrespectful to all people and the concept of property.

        > “They just want to live off of everyone else.”

Not obeying a legislative monopoly’s intrusion into one’s own property does not equal living of everyone else. Demanding to be excluded from the free market by being privileged with a legislative monopoly that intrudes into everyone else’s property however, that does equal living of everyone else.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TMJ66JH4SIZIQ46DJIQCC6TCYI Alfred

Not sure why you brought the word entrepreneur into your comment. An entrepreneur is someone who builds a business or an organization using leadership skills. An author of a book is simply a person who creates a written work. Do you have a problem with authors being compensated by those who read their works? You somehow mistakenly think that people who are downloading works written by authors are engaging in capitalism. I’m sure you’re quite familiar with copyright laws, and while you may not agree with them, they are the law. Just because you can use illegal methods to obtain the works from authors does not mean you are participating in capitalism. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

        • Fredrika

          > “An author of a book is simply a person who creates a written work.”

Once the author tries to make money from his work he is an entrepreneur.

          > “Do you have a problem with authors being compensated by those who read their works?”

Compensated for what? They have never been compensated for the work they do while creating, or people reading their works. They are compensated for the goods and services that they sell. I have no problem with them being compensated when they sell something. Sell being the key word.

          > “You somehow mistakenly think that people who are downloading works written by authors are engaging in capitalism.”

Trying to save money by choosing the cheapest option available, even if that means manufacturing certain goods and services oneself instead of buying them, is indeed capitalistic behaviour.

          > “I’m sure you’re quite familiar with copyright laws, and while you may not agree with them, they are the law.”

And? That is not an argument? Referencing what the law currently says as an attempt at coming up with an argument is circular reasoning, which is logical fallacy.

          > “Just because you can use illegal methods to obtain the works from authors..”

Filesharing is not obtaining anything from authors. Filesharing is the act of manufacturing copies with one’s own property, according to patterns that describe others people’s property, that they own.

          > “..does not mean you are participating in capitalism.”

Remind me, where did i use the phrase participating in capitalism?

          > “In fact, it’s quite the opposite.”

Would you care to explain how, instead of just making a claim? In reality however, acting according to the free market rules, and manufacturing certain goods and services oneself to save money, instead of buying them from a seller, is indeed capitalistic behaviour, as in using one’s scarce resources in the most economical manner. No sane capitalist would pay for something which he can manufacture himself for free.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TMJ66JH4SIZIQ46DJIQCC6TCYI Alfred

We both know quite well that those who illegally download works created by others are not “manufacturing copies with one’s own property”. To simply copy digital data verbatim is not “manufacturing” anything. Intellectual property is just that, the property of the person who created it. Just because the net allows you to create a copy does not mean you have obtained that copy legally. Stop trying to twist words to fit your agenda.

        • Fredrika

          > “We both know quite well that those who illegally download works created by others are not “manufacturing copies with one’s own property”.”

I know quite well that that’s exactly what they are doing.

          > “To simply copy digital data verbatim is not “manufacturing” anything.”

Copying means to manufacture a copy, and copying is copying whether that copy is manufactured in a CD pressing plant or in a computer.

          > “Intellectual property is just that, the property of the person who created it.”

Do not confuse the intellectual work, the book, with intellectual property, which refers to the copyright monopoly, and not the intellectual work. Property, whether physical or intangible, refers to something which has an inherent scarcity, which cause the effect that only one person at a time can use that property. Intellectual works have no such inherent scarcity. Please read up on the basic fundamentals about intellectual property before commenting any further. Your current level of ignorance makes it impossible for you to grasp the discussion otherwise.

          > “Just because the net allows you to create a copy does not mean you have obtained that copy legally.”

Nor have i ever argued so. But you are of course aware of the fact that there are many countries in the world where the copyright monopoly doesn’t regulate non-profit use, where filesharing therefore is fully legal?

          > “Stop trying to twist words to fit your agenda.”

My agenda? Coming from the person who can’t keep intellectual property apart from an intellectual work, and from the person who doesn’t seem to understand what an entrepreneur is. I’m not twisting anything, i’m keeping everything extremely factual in every single sentence i write. If there is a specific sentence in which you don’t understand my use of certain words, or can’t accept that it is factual as it is written, please quote that sentence and i will help you both read it properly and understand it, so you can see that is indeed correct and not twisted.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TMJ66JH4SIZIQ46DJIQCC6TCYI Alfred

Firstly, you are mistaken about your idea of an entrepreneur. The most common definition is “A person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on financial risk to do so.” A simple author or other creator does not necessarily fall under such a definition. Your use of the phrase “copyright monopoly” tells me all I need to know about you and your agenda. Your simplified view that because something can be copied it should be allowed will never gain traction. Do not try to separate the intellectual property from the intellectual work because the legal rights that apply to the work stem from the property. Those rights allow the owner to benefit from the work. In your view, it would be convenient to disconnect the two, but fortunately for the creators of the works, they have rights that protect their work.

        • Fredrika

          > “Firstly, you are mistaken about your idea of an entrepreneur. The most common definition is “A person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on financial risk to do so.”"

A creator that creates something and then tries to make money from that, instead of simply taking employment, is an entrepreneur. Trying to make money from an intellectual work is a business.

          > “Your use of the phrase “copyright monopoly” tells me all I need to know about you and your agenda.”

What is commonly referred to as copyright is in fact a legislative monopoly. and as such it’s most easily and properly referred to as copyright monopoly, so that no one misunderstands what it actually is, as in a monopoly. Usage of easily understandable and correct terms tells you nothing of my agenda.

          > “You simplified view that because something can be copied it should be allowed will never gain traction.”

I have never put forward such a view? Please quote the sentence which you interpreted in such a manner, and i will help you read it properly.

Secondly, that you use the phrase should be allowed tells me that you don’t understand how society works, regarding in what direction legislation affects, why, and what it is that should be. Everything is allowed until it is specifically forbidden in law. It’s not a matter of what should be allowed, it’s a matter of what can be proven necessary to prohibit. Until that state occurs everything is and should be allowed.

          > “Do not try to separate the intellectual property from the intellectual work because the legal rights that apply to the work stem from the property.”

Obviously two completely different entities that are not one and the same should be properly separated in language? The intellectual work exists regardless of whether or not any copyright legislation exits. The intellectual property however, the copyright monopoly, only exists if the law says it should, and only in such a limited manner as the law describes, which in many countries doesn’t include prohibiting filesharing.

          > “Those rights allow the owner to benefit from the work.”

The author is allowed to benefit from the work regardless of if any monopoly exits, because there exists no natural prohibition for him against such benefiting. The rights are a legislative monopoly that forbids everyone else than the monopoly owner to use the intellectual work in conjunction with goods and services that they can produce, with their property. That’s what all legislative monopolies do, they intrude into people’s property rights, and forbids them from using their property in a certain manner.

          > “In your view, it would be convenient to disconnect the two..”

I think the phrase you search for is factual. It is factual to separate the two, and it becomes absolutely necessary to separate them when you start to confuse what property it is that is involved in filesharing, which only is the property belonging to the people filesharing.

          > “..but fortunately for the creators of the works, they have rights that protect their work.”

Again you reference what the law currently says, believing it is some sort of argument, which it isn’t.

      • Goosmoo

”You’re not entitled to anything. Just wait until you have to go out into
the world and make a living. See if you want to work for free.”

Umm, I do work for a living.  Probably every writer/musician/actor thinks he or she should be paid a lot more than they’re currently being paid.  I think *I* should be paid a lot more than I’m currently being paid.

What’s my solution?  Get a better job.

What’s the solution for the creative types?  Create something that people will ***WANT*** to buy.  With much of what’s produced these days, I don’t see that happening, so don’t get your panties all bunched up when “artistic” crap isn’t even worth the materials used to make it.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TMJ66JH4SIZIQ46DJIQCC6TCYI Alfred

You’re oversimplifying it. “Get a better job.” These authors do have jobs, and they are writing works that they want to write. It’s not about getting another job, it simply about getting customers to pay for their work and not having people avoid paying for it by using free downloads.

        • Fredrika

          > “These authors do have jobs, and they are writing works that they want to write.”

Doing what you want do to is not a job. That’s a privilege. Working as an employee is a job. An entrepreneur is not an employee. An entrepreneur is a self-chosen risk taker that is fully aware of the fact that he might never see any money if he fails to sell something. Sell being the key word.

          > “It’s not about getting another job, it simply about getting customers to pay..”

Customers do indeed pay. People who do not buy are not customers.

          > “..for their work..”

Entrepreneurs are never ever paid for their work. They are paid for the goods and services that they manage to sell. Are you completely unaware of how entrepreneurship works on the free market? Do you have a problem with the free market? Are you advocating communism or a planned economy, where entrepreneurs get paid for other aspects of their entrepreneurship than selling anything?

          > “..and not having people avoid paying for it..”

Choosing a cheaper option is the cornerstone of capitalism, even of that means manufacturing the gods or services one seek oneself. Since they aren’t buying any goods or services, there’s nothing to pay for? Do you have a problem with capitalism? Again, are you advocating communism or some other form of non-free market non-capitalistic system?

          > “..by using free downloads.”

Using free options to obtain cultural works, options that the author has nothing to say about, that he receives no monetary reward from, has been the norm in society for over a 150 years. That’s a fully accepted norm among the people.

        • Goosmoo

Alfred, the only way the creative types are going to get more people to buy their works if is if they create something people WANT to buy.  I still buy music and books if I want to support the creator.  If the book or album has poor reviews or if it’s not something I’d spend money on with or without file sharing, then I’m not going to buy it period, but I might download it.

People need to get over the “every time someone downloads my I lose money.”   That is most definitely not true.

Produce content people will WANT to buy, and they will buy it.  Problem solved.

        • Goosmoo

oops that second “whatever” tag shouldn’t be there

    • Goosmoo

Why are you very mistakenly assuming that people would have bought your book?  Of all the many things I’ve downloaded, guess how much I would have actually bought had I seen the things in the store?

      None.

I’ve never heard of you, but even if you were the most famous writer in the world, I can still *guarantee* you that every download does not equal a lost sale.  I’d bet a few months of my paychecks that MOST of the downloads would have happened anyway even if the people doing the downloading had seen your book priced at $1.

Demonoid will return.. I know it will.. It always does..

  • http://www.facebook.com/michael.florian.144 Michael Florian

Things change, it’s evolution. Sadly nothing last’s forever. Regardless of where the attack came from we could be witnessing the end of a great thing. Demonoid is walking that thin thread to try to stay alive just like other big torrent sites have for years. The clock is ticking. Whether one person alone can beat the odds is yet to be seen. I for one would love to see it happen but i wouldn’t put money one it.

    You should count all these things as a learning experience. For example;

“Rita Snick is the worlds greatest romance novelist, but even success isn’t enough to mend her recently broken heart. When she finds out that her latest bestseller has been pirated, she is understandably aghast. Tracking down the culprit, she isn’t expecting Steve Matthews- Internet hero and software engineer.

As she pursues her desperate action against him, she’s determined to resist the stirring of her emotions.

Can she resist this keyboard warrior? Can their opposing worldviews ever find equilibrium? Most importantly; can their budding romance come to terms with his…Fundamental Infringement?”

Fundamental Infringement; a Bass Ackwards Romance Novel. Coming 2013.

You know a famous Musician by the name of Lars Ulrich had something to say. He sued  Napster for releasing a song before it was finished. Thats what he said was wrong, but in his own words” As long as the material has been released and out for a bit i honestly don’t care about it being pirated”. So Missy are you one to argue with Mr. Ulrich?

want a novel, try, on ramsgate sands by anne de chasse, and share and tell everyone, it is a good read from an up and coming writer. nita…get a life and self publish. demonoid, come back to me. and the rest of you have just caused me to read the whole thread and waste, well not waste, it was quite fun really, an hour of my life. thank you torrents .for this. i bought eels who had never heard of. i bought amon tobin, who i would never have heard of in a million years, and it gave me the three very rude vinyls from pete and dud, who i had heard of, but could not buy for love nor money anywhere else, and lastly thank torrents for giving us things we could never get when our maximum is 5kbps down speed. maybe a pay torrent site would be a good idea, but i have been saying that for years and it just isn’t happening, what with all the anti torrent attitude out there.

I know he will NEVER do that, so I don’t want to hear this guy complain about how he has no help running the site!!!!!!!!

Books,Music,Movies and general pictures are art and should be enjoyed by as many people as possible, the overall corruption from “Big Brother” is what has hurt true artists overall the years and pushed people into a belief that it is no longer a art form but a money machine only.

never had a pop up from any torrent site inc demon.. theres a plugin for firefox
called adblockplus and theres a setting called disable pop ups
and then you can insert sites with exception you want popups
    or a domain range

as for ebooks on torrent sites.. frankly cos people downloaded
it dont mean any would of bought it.. this is were the stats are wrong and loaded..
what should worry you more if people upload it on directlink download sites like scribd now anyone searching can ruin your income
for sure as buyers will find free and go no further

people use torrents for 3 reasons
    1) tv shows that wont air in their own country at all or 6mon to 2 years
later.. they want to see their fav show now.. and hence no
other option exists as woodyholly dont get the modern way people
watch stuff now and have border blocks on ips
amount of shows I didnt even know existed until p2p came along

    2) to check out stuff before they buy it.. if its even on dvd at the time
doesnt mean they wont buy the bluray when its out

    3) they want a harddrive version not have their house filled with
many dvds and covers when you can fit many on a media server
and watch anytime without hunting it down

if a direct down from tv websites existed for a monthly membership
of like 20 dollars and download all the shows you want for month i think p2p would be dead for tv shows.

    • Goosmoo

Tronix, your post was spot on.

“if a direct down from tv websites existed for a monthly membership
of like 20 dollars and download all the shows you want for month i think p2p would be dead for tv shows.” — this is why I use a certain subscription music service instead of downloading music via filesharing.  I get 360kbps sound, a large variety of music to choose from, I can stream or download to my iPod, and if I delete something from my iPod I can easily re-download it.  When companies offer a service that is more appealing than file sharing, and yes it is possible, there will be fewer people using p2p to get their entertainment.

to continue my earlier facebook analogy..
What if FB had been down this long and the 1 guy running it
just said he’s working on it..

    how about some details ?

    screw demonoid
it hasn’t made any difference to me at all.
i’m registered at plenty of sites and Demon was the least frequently used of them all

    too many crappy sites.
And i mean the design of them plus who runs them plus there users.

Like that douche who runs IsoHunt..
the prick banned me because someone said IsoHunt was the best site on the net (in the shoutbox)
and their search results were superior to anything on earth.
and i posted LOL no.. hell no the search resulst are kind of crappy etc..

minutes later the admin douche told me i had been a problem since i registered
only a month or soon before this and he said all my comments were negative etc
and the only other comments i made were, rating + comment on about
4 survey spam / fakes torrents, so i was helping people NOT complaining.
So the fucking dumb prick warned me and i laughed at em and told
go fuck yourself and banned me.. see if i fucking care i told em.
Pretty much the same thing at another well know music tracker.
and the truth is that site sucks (bad search results)
..its loaded with dumb noobs (like most places)
Anyone see some the stupid crap these guys say in that shoutbox ?
Nothing like listening to little kids ramble on, like a bossy little 13 yr old
mouth piece on the headset on CSS for example

    I miss http://www.filelist.org

You need to have some good rules set up for releasers
or your letting idiots run your site. I’ve been using torrents since the beginning
and i’ve seen many sites come and go.. life will go on with out Demonoid
    just fine.

I’d like to fins a site for users with a decade+ of P2P experience

    • conspiracy

      Pros and Cons

      my 2 cents worth

demonoid has always had the better community of people.. they will keep seeding more and less hit and run is my experience.. they will answer questions and offer help and the uploaders often will reply and not ignore your pms or posted comments and people tend to thank uploaders for sharing their resources and time to get a tv show etc TPB is a good backup but its full of teenies complaining about quality of rips and other nonsense.. since they didnt grow up with vhs tapes and cant handle a little video damage. tpb lacks a report and banned system.. too many at tpb post rude comments that take up tpb data space and resources on meaningless comments
tpb you can edit comments or torrents or even delete them
a much needed system.. demon can edit everything and delete
comments and torrents.. very simple to do

the demon layout is miles better then other p2p sites as well

the downside is they dont count tracker stats properly and
not support UDP trackers.. so stats are always wrong
its just a coding issue.. but beign one man band not surprising its not perfect

      demonoid update
      =============
at the monent no site slow page error now just says reset connection so I
think theyre finally blocking all ips and prob allowing non bot ones back
in is my guess.. certain countries will prob get access back first is
      my guess

I’m telling ya, I think Demonoid is over for good this time, there’s only one guy running it just like BTJunkie before it closed up shop forever months ago. I would be willing to bet the next time the server comes back online it will have a “Goodbye” page for everyone to see. A lot of sites have just said fuck it and threw in the towel which is a shame because that’s what the anti-piracy assholes want them to do.

Completely agree. Site has been screwed for 6 months. Takes up to 48 hours to up a torrent as it continually timed out. This is not a recent phenomenon.

Although a pioneering site it has fallen behind those like Kickass which properly rate torrents etc.

I don’t think you get it. This is done by 3rd party companies whose sole purpose it fucking with Piracy sites…. they don’t care if they are attacked back, because they CAN’T be, they would have no need to accept incoming connections.

  • /b/loody flies

pardon my noobiness regarding servers and their technical side but surely in this day and age we can write a piece of software that can be installed in the server to instantly detect when its getting simultaneously pinged by thousands and thousands of connection requests (ddos attack) and immediately shut down all incoming traffic untill it senses the attack has gone?   i mean it should be able to see a massive sudden spike in incoming connections that could only be attributed to an attack ,a “ddos signature” if you will…..im obviously missing something,or over simplifying it as if it could be done it obviously already would be…..wouldn’t  it?

    • Post_101

There is software for this but it’s mad expensive each month, big companies have such measures in place but torrent sites don’t generate much cash each month to afford such security.

    • ZMtech

The hardware to prevent a basic dDoS attack starts around a hundred thousand. You have to purchase a VIP to go in front of your server farm that handles syn-cookies. Basically, the way a dDoS attack works (or one of the ways) is to send a fragmented HTTP request. Since servers are designed to trust the client, the VIP will leave an apache session open waiting for more. Top of the line load balancers can usually handle about 100,000 apache requests at a time. So with 100,000 fragmented HTTP requests, the server will no longer accept new connections.

Where you fix this with the syn cookie is you don’t leave the apache service waiting. You send the syn cookie then close the connection. If it’s a legitimate client, the VIP will be able to re-open the session appropriately. If it’s attacker, there is usually logic in place to stop accepting requests after a certain number of syn cookies are issued to that IP.

      • /b/loody flies

    @rosey978:disqus@Matt:disqus

you know if you google “botnets”, believe or not, There are businesses that PROVIDE Renting of servers to Conduct only one purpose in mind and only, to DDoS any kind of servers and it costs about up to $20 per hour…. problem is that its cheap so they can just keep on pressing that kind of attacks… if we do a quick math that is $240 a day which i dont think MPAA/RIAA will mind paying to keep torrent sites down.

On top of that, i was Extremely surprised to hear that Demonoid’s staff is down to just sorely a few people….cuz the impression im gettin from this is that DEMONOID is in a risk of MAINTAINING its own ENTITY *PLUS* its facing a *DDoS* attack.

its real sad to see it fall apart and most of us cant really do anything about it.. really.

DEMONOID is being attacked by private companies who now do DDoS for a living. This will happen more and more often.

    • Meezy_3825

you can attack anyone on the net… ANYONE i mean ANYONE one the net… companies are included they aren’t special if you connect to the net you can get hit… perfect example for you SONY’s PSNetwork…. the were attacked and shutdown for awhile… why cuz no one is safe on the net… everyone can be attacked… by bot nets, spiderwebs, ect… you can’t attack back… cuz you can see its just finding the man power and hardware to do so… and your method… weather you use a bot-net or a spiderweb, or whatever you just need to have it organized… and you don’t need a bot-net or a spiderweb or any infected pc’s at your control all you need is a lot of friends to aid you in the attack…
for every company that thinks it is untouchable there is a hacker that is just unseen and the unseen is the demise to anything untouchable….

  • Koncopd

I assume Demonoid is compleately dead now.

  • Post_101

Demoniod has been down 14 months in total since it first came online, this is not the first attack and it sure won’t be the last.

when getting a ddos attack there’s nothing you can do but wait it out, there’s thousands even millions of data packet connections that flood the server and overwhelm it.

It doesn’t matter if it’s one guy or an army of guys trying to fix it, it will still take the same amount of time for the problem to resolve itself.

My advice is don’t put all your eggs in one basket, have a good few back trackers to download your content on, torrentinvites is a good place to get invites to private trackers that’s .org, build up a good collection so your never stuck when a few good sites down.

Why waste time trying to get invites to private torrent sites?

Pirate Bay is open to EVERYONE. No invite needed. There is a reason it is the biggest torrent site….because it’s the best (besides Demonoid, of course).

      • Post_101

Seems my comments keep getting deleted, tut tut

      • robthom

        Demonoid = Fantastic rare content.

Piratebay = Always there and never dies.
        (For long, )

The world needs both of them.

      • Guest00

Pirate Bay sucks cocks. Its a great site to go join if you enjoy the MPAA/RIAA tracking what you download.

        • Meatball

Have you ever heard of PeerBlock or any of the other dozens of programs that allow you to download anonymously? I can tell you are new to the whole torrent thing, so I suggest you educate yourself, rather than making dopey comments.

Besides, when was the last time you heard of the MPAA or RIAA taking anyone to court? 10 years ago maybe?

  • http://twitter.com/alsiarat alsiarat

its still down… and down. iam waiting to download some movies.

    • robthom

Go to KAT if thats all you want.

Demon is worth way more then DLing the latest camrips.

There is a shitload of one of a kind content on there collected and assembled by intelligent enthusiasts.

Hosting the latest cams and blockbuster rips is probably what brings them more trouble then they deserve.

Maybe they shouldn’t even bother with those.

  • Amarilis

…And now the tracker is down too.

  • Wolfgang

If Demonoid would implement a donation system for Christ’s sake they wouldn’t be so strung out financially. Yes, they were banned from PayPal and AlertPay is total shit. There are numerous alternatives people would be willing to do in order to support the site.

They are just killing themselves. With one guy working on the entire site, who knows how long this debacle is going to take!

    • robthom

Did they get banned from Paypal,
      I hadn’t heard that.

      But shit,
I stopped using paypal 5-6 years ago just because they’ve always been such b!tches.

(Why doesn’t somebody bring that thing down!)

But like you said there are other,
      albeit slightly less convenient options.

I agree they need something set up to reimburse some help.

  • Ladybbird

Just to add, you would need a heck of a lot of donations to buy the software to stop these attacks…..it costs tens of thousands of $$$

    • http://twitter.com/bohemianroxie rosanna morris

It might take 6 months…but it will be back. Be patient.
      It’s not my only…but it’s my best.

      • robthom

        I agree,
there are other ones that I wont give a name, but demon is the best one on the whole for guaranteed quality and rare stuff.

        Its a blow to culture,
and whoever did it deserves to lose a hand IMO.

Shame no one is helping oot except 1 guy!

Anybody with the technical skill should be lending a hand if they can to such a great community service.

  • sNowbody

The whole torrent system needs an overhaul. I want to seed files but I won’t have them all lying flat in my downloads folder. Moving them breaks the seed. Sometimes I just want a single track from an album. We need to make a distinction between logical collections and the actual checksum-verified files to encourage seeding and decentralization. Demonoid could be to torrents what torrentfreak is to torrent sites.

    • Fredrika

      > “I want to seed files but I won’t have them all lying flat in my downloads folder.

You do not have to store them in your downloads folder. You can store the data files in any folder of your choice, and seed them from there.

      > “Moving them breaks the seed.”

Not if you move the data files from within your torrent client.

      > “Sometimes I just want a single track from an album.”

That is also possible with torrents, you do not have to download every single indexed file within a torrent, you can chose which files to download, including just one.

      • sNowbody

I want them to seed files as part of the original seed not start a new one where I’m the only seeder. I also want to rename files (like adding dates to movies, or replacing spaces for dots in book names and adding authors) but I’d have to start a new torrent for everything. It seems wasteful since all the data is there, its just the metadata that changes.

How many times do we see the same ebooks being reseeded as part of a new collection for instance?

I want to say, ‘Here you go Transmission. Here are the folders I keep my ebooks in. Create a checksum for them and send these off to Demonoid. If they match any in Demonoid’s checksum database then seed.’ Much easier for me.

People can then create new collections using data that’s already being seeded. They choose the primary filenames and include a searchable table of synonyms from the filenames of existing seeds. They can then organise the collection as they want – by author, topic, or whatever.

      • JenniP13

so true.  Common sense.  Just right click the torrent, click on advanced, then set download location.  It doesn’t matter if it’s downloading or finished or seeding, it will move it to wherever you want with no problems with seeding.

When downloading, just select or deselect the tracks you want/don’t want.  Duh. If you can’t do it from the original pop-up menu (like TPB) then just do it right from your torrent client, on the bottom, click files.  People actually ask these questions??? lol… It’s not even hard, it’s right in front of your face.  my 9 year old figured it out.

  • Meezy_3825

Damn Demonoid i need you… why DDos attacks have to f*ck things up…. we need an anti-antip2p organization to start destroying all these anti’s on the net and there is so many of them… so so so so many it is retarded…. i say every one of launch a ddos on every major media company out there cuz these are the same people that gave us all the first file share progs we started using in the 90′s they have been trying to set us up from the beginning, give us the first tools we start sharing files then they start checking what we are sharing, they see us sharing what they intended us to share, they knew we were breaking copyrights from the start why cuz they gave us the first few tools to remove the copyright, then they start using other copyright protection methods and gave us the first few tools to crack and remove those copyrights… wow for an industry that is so worried about what it produces and distributes they sure did give us the circumventions for the protection they used on it and now wont to cry about it… copyright makes no sense and the only thing it really does is aid the media industry in stealing the hard work of those who created it… and they call us the pirates…..

did they close down the tracker domain ?
and it *could be permanent how would we know

    • Hope This Helps

This happens whenever the site goes down for an extended amount of time. Make sure you have the following trackers listed and you should be fine:

  • Cydarion

Demonoid is not going to disappear just because of couple of corporate potheads that were high enough to think they can pressure the file-sharing community by ordering a few botnet attacks.

    • xpmule

how do you know he was attacked in the first place ?
      don’t be so gullible.

until there is some proof I don’t believe it.
with a web site that has such a horrible track record
i don’t doubt it *could be something else

so were suppose to believe on the 15th time its because of a DDOS ?

And not going to disapear ?

      • Labraid

Demonoid wasn’t just an another copy-paste tracker site with shitty layout and tons of adds, it was a well maintained site, lots of unique content with a solid community to back it up so I simply doubt owner would just shut it down without saying goodbye and letting us know his reasons.

But yeah, I have no solid proof so it’s just me standing for my favorite site.

If you want to get back at the people who did this, look no further than RIAA/MPAA headquarters. It’s quite obvious they hired someone to do this, much easier than taking shit down the bureaucratic way. This is a massive blow to filesharing culture and sets an ugly precedent for the days to come, we can’t just take it sitting down if trackers start dropping like flies.

Haha, demonoid got pawned, hope whoever is DDOSing continues to DDOS as the owners of Demonoid are disrespectable; let it burn.  It’s not a major file sharing anyways ( I would know).  Now days Demonoid doesn’t host not even 10% of what I need.  It’s run by the most political BS on the earth, who obviously appreciate the minor 10% of content and enjoy power of nothing.  Demonoid you are NOTHING.  And quite frankly should be erased from this earth.  FYI, I am a big Warez contributor and demonoid is on my blacklist and all my content is clean.  Burn baby burn….Believe folks there are much better sites.

And then we are bombarded 24/7 by sex adds. Go figure.

It was great when it started but tits search engine is abysmal (cf: Pirate Bay & Kickass). Its useless having 20 people say thanks – I want to have a quality rating (cf Kickass & BTJunkie). It took forever to upload with timeouts.

Its time is done, retire now & we will remember the good times & say thanks for those.

If you’re such a big warez contributor, where’s the torrent site that YOU run?

  • Pingback: Demonoid Will Be Back, But Patience Required | TorrentFreak

  • ericore

Frustrated, absolutely not.  I have no tolerance for stupidity and Demonoid has a lot of that going for it.  You want a site that respects the warez community.  Demonoid simply isn’t one of those.  The Pirate bay is much better, but again is not the ultimate download site.  Notice, the sites I gave out; the pirate bay (well protected), Bitsnoop (doesn’t host any actual torrent so can’t be taken down)…These are far the best though…

    • Stevanbg66

Demonoid is par with pirate bay, and bitsnoop. But D has torrents from jazz, comics, ebooks and many categories that other can dream of. Demonoid has quality people which upload more than average content. Has forum, RSS, Listings by categories and subcategories.

And every site can be taken down, it seems that bitsnoop was not so important to be taken down..

      • ericore

Isn’t fun to hear from people who don’t know what they are talking about.
“And every site can be taken down”, The pirate bay has been repeatedly attacked and take downs have failed profusely.  The reason bitsnoop is not taken down is because it is not vulnerable.

        • Stevanbg66

yes Bitsnoop is a super hero. I just hear that they signed a contract with Marvel Comics.

        • somebody else

Every site is vulnerable, the difference is if the aggressors have targeted them yet (in a warzone, companions give the enemy someone else to shoot at), and if they have the will and resources to pop up again (like trench warfare, something pirate bay is very good at).

  • teja
