Demonoid Tracker Is Back, Will the Site be Next?

Written by Ernesto on February 19, 2008

It has been three months since the popular (semi)private BitTorrent tracker Demonoid went offline. Since then, there has been a lot of speculation about its future, and many feared that the site would never return. Totally out of the blue, however, the tracker is now responding again.

demonoidThe frontend of Demonoid is still hosted in the US, together with the popular Subdemon forums. Interestingly, the tracker - which has been offline for months - is now hosted in Malaysia, and has started to respond again, approximately 30 hours ago.

It is of course not clear what this all means, but without an official message from the Demonoid team, speculation has started. Could it be that the site has found a new host, and preparing a return? Many former Demonoid members are secretly hoping that this is indeed the case.

Last December, Deimos, the founder and main admin of what used to be one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers, posted a message on the Subdemon forums on the possibility of a return. At the time he wrote: “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there. And there’s some personal stuff I need to take care of that takes most of my time at the moment, and that does not help.”

For those who forgot, here is a recap of what has happened so far. The trouble for Demonoid started back in June, when the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN started to put pressure on Demonoid and their ISP, Leaseweb. Deimos decided that the Netherlands wasn’t the safe haven it used to be and he to moved the site to Canada, which resulted in a few days of downtime.

Deimos never really told the administrators or members of the site exactly what was happening. Initially, most members assumed that there was some hardware failure, but after a few days it became clear that Demonoid was more or less forced to move. Maybe there could have been hardware failures too, who knows, but the outcome was the same - Canada here we come.

Relocating the servers to Canada initially solved the problems, but, by the end of September Deimos took Demonoid offline for the second time. Again, nobody knew what was going on until we found out that the CRIA was responsible for the downtime, which was later confirmed by Deimos. It turned out that Canada wasn’t the best choice after all.

After 5 days of downtime the site returned, now blocking all traffic from Canadian users in an attempt to calm down the CRIA. At first it looked like the storm was finally over, but on November 9th Demonoid’s users were welcomed by a disappointing message on the frontpage explaining that the CRIA was indeed responsible for the downtime.

So will Demonoid ever return? The fact that the tracker is back online, in a different location seems to suggest that there is something happening.

Update: February 20, tracker offline again after 3 days uptime.

Demonoid - never ending supply of good shit! Not very good speed, but a huge collection of different stuff. I just hope it will get more private and take some kind of action against those with 0.3 in ratio.

I’m glad the tracker is back howsoever :)

Yes I want demonoid back. It just worked for me. On what.cd I can’t even seed. But demonoid I have a comfy 6.0 ratio. Or I did before it went down.

21 Feb 19, 2008 at 14:00 by Me

After the actions of certain people in charge of subdemon I have come to the conclusion that I DON’T GIVE TWO FLYING SHITS about Demonoid anymore….

22 Feb 19, 2008 at 14:23 by dunson

I really think the site will be back soon. I just don’t see why they’d move the tracker and not come online within a short period of time. I’m sure they don’t want to leave 2 million people with blue balls.

@ 21: I stopped posting on subdemon b/c of too much moderation too. What are you referring to in your comment?

Two good things arose from Demonoid being shut down:

(1) I realized ho good a collection and collective Demonoid offered…

(2) I learned what else was out there for the torrent-minded…

WHEN it comes back, I think they should keep it a little more private and enforce the ratios to edge out the leechers a bit more…

Yep private trackers are the way to go imo. As good as places like TPB are theres nothing better than being on a well seeded private tracker. Ive never once maxed out my speed on TPB, yet other private tracker sites im on I always get max speed. People are more willing to seed back because of the ratio limits.
The argument is there about not having a fast upload speed etc, but lets face it. If your on anything but adsl/cable nowadays then you shoulden’t be downloading massive files. I haven’t got an astonishing up speed but I make sure I give back at least 1:1 of what I take.

It’s cool that one of my favorite trackers is going back up again. I’ve been dying to put music and movies onto their site, but didn’t get the chance when the site went down in November.

Since it’s disappearance, I’ve been forced to float from torrent site to torrent site trying to find a replacement. ThePirateBay is “sufficient”, but it can never beat Demonoid.

I’m glad Deimos did not settle for taking up server space with the guys from ThePirateBay either. I think all of this media attention and popularity is beginning to get to TPB’s head and they’re forgetting the pirate code.

All of this “consolidation” of torrent sites and trackers to Sweden and TPB allowing sites to join up with them is not the pirate code. The first thing I learned was to decentralize.

It’s harder to stop a million spiders.

55 Feb 19, 2008 at 18:52 by hmmm

I dont think it will come back to many law problems but if it does then it would be nice….

You plums bitching about subdemon, is only because you’re too stupid to follow the rules. It’s gimps like you that bring things on top, and bring the heat to sites, cos you can’t follow basic rules and keep your fat mouths shut. The mods at subdemon are the fairest around, but if you are an ignoramus, and have no respect for the rules, then you get warned. Hopefully they’ll ban you dicks from demonoid when it returns too ¬_¬

canada was not the problem with the move that demonoid made, it was the isp who caved into the pressure from the CRIA. other sites still operate successfully in canada with no major issues.

Btw, the main site (demonoid.com) also seems to point (at least on my end) to the same ip range as the tracker, in malaysia (124.217.253.33)

Demonoid was shit. All they had was crappy re-encodes of superior releases.

JAMGOOD-KVCD? Yuck.

86 Feb 20, 2008 at 00:05 by ensamgud

Well, the laws against piracy is really strict in the Malaysia region since they have so much trouble with it down there. Probably one of the largest piracy zones on earth. Putting a server like this down there is just asking for trouble. Sweden or Russia are both better choices, making this deal look more like a joke/fraud than anything else. I hope I’m wrong.

87 Feb 20, 2008 at 00:27 by Anonymous Too

Go to any of the public trackers and search on Demonoid… isohunt will have the highest hit count… who needs invites and all that drama?

Gone to Usenet, see ya.

88 Feb 20, 2008 at 00:54 by Scientology makes me laugh

Public Trackers are good but Demonoid was sooo much better. I believe some think its dumb only cuz of the fact that they were never invited. There was very little that was not shared on that site.

stop bitching fool

91 Feb 20, 2008 at 01:19 by ensamgud

kilgore

I have a friend who lived down there several years and the busts made by authorities weren’t exactly with silk gloves. The overall piracy problem is still huge, but they go very hard on individuals and small/medium businesses who can’t afford original licenses or know the right people to pay off to stay out of trouble.

I don’t know about hosting trackers like this one, but it all seems dumb considering the enforcements made against piracy in Malaysia, not to mention there are countries where this could be achieved pretty much legally.

92 Feb 20, 2008 at 01:48 by Catnapper

Demonoid was one of three sites I relied upon for 99% of my torrents. The other two were TV exclusive sites though so Demonoid was my favourite source for almost everything else - it was particularly great for comics, books & movies, with fewer fakes than the widely used public sites, and when it went down nothing else *adequately* filled the void it left. Some sites tried but Demonoid left big shoes to fill.

Hope it returns!!

No! Demonoid coming to Malaysia means our “peace bay” here are will be targeted by the MPAA/RIA too.

Then, they will start discussing with gov, I’m sure the gov will respond to them.

I guess sooner or later the our gov will react to denied access to all considered illegal stuff on the internet.

I believe it is different with pirated CD/DVD issues. In the torrent case, the gov just need to CUT THE LINES.

we are just hoping that or most fav site will b come back soon.

Whoever runs Demonoid strikes me as not too reliable. I mean if he doesnt even tell his Admins that the host is being threatened why would i trust him to tell me they might be some impending legal or other probs for us users..

Yeh, I learned my lesson. Even if it comes back, I will never regard any torrent tracked with a demonoid tracker as reliable again. It was a good lesson into not putting all your eggs (torrents) in one basket (on one tracker).

I’ll attend if it comes back, but it won’t be the hub of operations it once was for me.

135 Feb 20, 2008 at 16:49 by wow

Philippines is my 1st choice when it comes to server location. NO Cyber piracy laws, RIA, MPA, cheap internet and even Microsoft cant demand a lawsuit because 90% of software that filipinos uses are PIRATED. And if youre in trouble you can bribed your way out of it if you got the $.

Im wondering if torrent storage shutdown, and demonoid tracker coming back online have something n common?

Seems that all of the sudden TS went down and is no longer a website. Yesterday it said upgrading server, today its gone.

hmmm, was Deimos involved with torrentstorage?

148 Feb 21, 2008 at 00:14 by Anonymous

YEAH ._./

149 Feb 21, 2008 at 00:17 by BTW...

It’s not the 1st time Malaysia has been using for hosting some questionable websites. In the past Hamas and Hizbullah have used Malaysia to host their websites.

From a legal point of view, Malaysia is NOT safe either. The Copyright Act 1997 gives the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to ask the MCMC, via the Corrigendum-Communications and Multimedia (Compounding of Offences) Regulations 2002, to shutdown the tracker.

Of course, like everything Malaysia, there is no enforcement, even if the laws are there. Just witness the SMS scams that have trapped so many people, and the lack of teeth in implementing ULL and LNP.

I’d bet a fiver however, that it will be the cost of hosting, which is horrendously high in Malaysia, that will see Demonoid move from Malaysia, not the law.

Deimos prolly has to watch his step and be secretive about shit because of he anti piracy lobby which is growing into a giant pain in the ass.
Torrent users should take the example of anonymous and unite against them,we would so crush them.

@#158: “…and sees no problem with leaving people in the dark because he doesn’t feel he owes an explanation or an announcement about what’s happening whenever the site goes down.”

Uh, that’s probably because, you know, he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation or an announcement about what’s happening whenever the site goes down. I suggest you stay away if the site comes back up, that way you won’t have your panties up in a twist if a situation should arise where you believe Deimos owes you anything.

If piracy laws in Malaysia is strict it wouldn’t be one of the worlds largest piracy zones.
The fact that it’s a large piracy zone doesn’t have anything to do with the goverment going easy on the problem.

“Hey, 70% of all our digital media are pirated copies. Let’s ignore it and have tea.”

Piracy laws in Malaysia are strict - they haven’t always been, but they are now.

One of the reasons why piracy stays in Malaysia, and other countries, is corruption. The goverment have laws against piracy, but are easy to pay off.

tracert on inferno.demonoid.com came back to malaysia on the 19th

Today, the 21st, tracert for inferno.demonoid.com’s IP comes back to WASHINGTON D.C. USA.

What’s up with that??

169 Feb 22, 2008 at 01:10 by anonymous

could it be that the dns on demonoids domain still points to the old tracker ip which could have been overtaken by antip2p and they threw up a tracker on that ip in malaysia to see who connects to it ? possibility=

170 Feb 22, 2008 at 01:23 by joe

I dont know, i am confused as to why it would have a malaysia ip address one day, and washington dc of all places the next day.

197 Feb 25, 2008 at 09:28 by Matt

Great news - but I disagree with the person who said that they hope they take action against those with 0.3 ratios.

In my experience, sites which demand super good ratios are virtually always extremely un-user-friendly. I know so many people who have spent weeks seeding stuff on those kinds of sites only to still be banned because nobody wants to download it. You spend more time just trying to download crap you don’t want just as a ratio boosting exercise than actually enjoying the stuff you’ve downloaded!

The main thig to be said for private sites in reality is the sheer range of stuff they have - e.g. indie music with Oink, or 80s films with Demonoid. That’s what they have/had over stuff like the public trackers, not the seeding, which is usually fine even with isohunt.
