Demonoid Tracker Is Back, Will the Site be Next?
Written by Ernesto on February 19, 2008It has been three months since the popular (semi)private BitTorrent tracker Demonoid went offline. Since then, there has been a lot of speculation about its future, and many feared that the site would never return. Totally out of the blue, however, the tracker is now responding again.
The frontend of Demonoid is still hosted in the US, together with the popular Subdemon forums. Interestingly, the tracker - which has been offline for months - is now hosted in Malaysia, and has started to respond again, approximately 30 hours ago.
It is of course not clear what this all means, but without an official message from the Demonoid team, speculation has started. Could it be that the site has found a new host, and preparing a return? Many former Demonoid members are secretly hoping that this is indeed the case.
Last December, Deimos, the founder and main admin of what used to be one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers, posted a message on the Subdemon forums on the possibility of a return. At the time he wrote: “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there. And there’s some personal stuff I need to take care of that takes most of my time at the moment, and that does not help.”
For those who forgot, here is a recap of what has happened so far. The trouble for Demonoid started back in June, when the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN started to put pressure on Demonoid and their ISP, Leaseweb. Deimos decided that the Netherlands wasn’t the safe haven it used to be and he to moved the site to Canada, which resulted in a few days of downtime.
Deimos never really told the administrators or members of the site exactly what was happening. Initially, most members assumed that there was some hardware failure, but after a few days it became clear that Demonoid was more or less forced to move. Maybe there could have been hardware failures too, who knows, but the outcome was the same - Canada here we come.
Relocating the servers to Canada initially solved the problems, but, by the end of September Deimos took Demonoid offline for the second time. Again, nobody knew what was going on until we found out that the CRIA was responsible for the downtime, which was later confirmed by Deimos. It turned out that Canada wasn’t the best choice after all.
After 5 days of downtime the site returned, now blocking all traffic from Canadian users in an attempt to calm down the CRIA. At first it looked like the storm was finally over, but on November 9th Demonoid’s users were welcomed by a disappointing message on the frontpage explaining that the CRIA was indeed responsible for the downtime.
So will Demonoid ever return? The fact that the tracker is back online, in a different location seems to suggest that there is something happening.
Update: February 20, tracker offline again after 3 days uptime.

YEAH ._./
It’s not the 1st time Malaysia has been using for hosting some questionable websites. In the past Hamas and Hizbullah have used Malaysia to host their websites.
From a legal point of view, Malaysia is NOT safe either. The Copyright Act 1997 gives the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to ask the MCMC, via the Corrigendum-Communications and Multimedia (Compounding of Offences) Regulations 2002, to shutdown the tracker.
Of course, like everything Malaysia, there is no enforcement, even if the laws are there. Just witness the SMS scams that have trapped so many people, and the lack of teeth in implementing ULL and LNP.
I’d bet a fiver however, that it will be the cost of hosting, which is horrendously high in Malaysia, that will see Demonoid move from Malaysia, not the law.
Hope that Demonoid come back soon. It’s been long enough since the site went down….Demonoid is the best !
Have ever been and will ever will be.
Come BACK SOON PLEASE….
Deimos prolly has to watch his step and be secretive about shit because of he anti piracy lobby which is growing into a giant pain in the ass.
Torrent users should take the example of anonymous and unite against them,we would so crush them.
do you’s think we will still have our user names when it comes back?
i wouldnt see why not, pretty sure they backed the database before it was down
I can tell you now the MPAA owns the Malaysian gov.
Its a gov. that will take the side of who ever pays the most.
Its election time now so they are busy brainwashing voters. But once that’s over that tracker is going down

(Groan.) Oh please, spare me. The guy has a major attitude problem and sees no problem with leaving people in the dark because he doesn’t feel he owes an explanation or an announcement about what’s happening whenever the site goes down. Total ingrate.
And don’t get me started about keeping people waiting for SEVERAL MONTHS for membership to open AS PROMISED, while at the same time allowing large amounts of needed membership slots to be taken up by scumbag leechers who maintain perpetual ratios in the 0.00-0.25 range. Yeah, god forbid any of those douchebags get kicked so good sharers can get in.
Screw Demonoid.
Here’s hoping…

you had the best torrents out there
and they all worked every single one of them so yeah come back!
When the local newspaper report about Demonoid, the site will be shut down. Thats is how Malaysian gov enforce the law…
@#158: “…and sees no problem with leaving people in the dark because he doesn’t feel he owes an explanation or an announcement about what’s happening whenever the site goes down.”
Uh, that’s probably because, you know, he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation or an announcement about what’s happening whenever the site goes down. I suggest you stay away if the site comes back up, that way you won’t have your panties up in a twist if a situation should arise where you believe Deimos owes you anything.
arab would be my first choice to host !

Well, the laws against piracy is really strict in the Malaysia region since they have so much trouble with it down there. Probably one of the largest piracy zones on earth. Putting a server like this down there is just asking for trouble. Sweden or Russia are both better choices, making this deal look more like a joke/fraud than anything else. I hope I’m wrong.
If piracy laws in Malaysia is strict it wouldn’t be one of the worlds largest piracy zones.
The fact that it’s a large piracy zone doesn’t have anything to do with the goverment going easy on the problem.
“Hey, 70% of all our digital media are pirated copies. Let’s ignore it and have tea.”
Piracy laws in Malaysia are strict - they haven’t always been, but they are now.
One of the reasons why piracy stays in Malaysia, and other countries, is corruption. The goverment have laws against piracy, but are easy to pay off.
tracert on inferno.demonoid.com came back to malaysia on the 19th
Today, the 21st, tracert for inferno.demonoid.com’s IP comes back to WASHINGTON D.C. USA.
What’s up with that??
could it be that the dns on demonoids domain still points to the old tracker ip which could have been overtaken by antip2p and they threw up a tracker on that ip in malaysia to see who connects to it ? possibility=
I dont know, i am confused as to why it would have a malaysia ip address one day, and washington dc of all places the next day.
Update, the tracker is once again not responding to tracert, who knows! Just come back demon!
Hope your cleared your problems Deimos
Believe me, there is something missing since Demonoid ‘disappeared’…
Quality work.
