Demonoid Tracker Moves to Ukraine

Written by Ernesto on March 16, 2008

Demonoid, once one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers, has reappeared again, this time hosted in Ukraine. The website is still down but the trackers are now fully operational again, perhaps a sign that Demonoid is crawling back up to speed?

demonoidIn June 2007 Demonoid was pressured to leave their host in the Netherlands, mainly because of legal threats from the Dutch anti-piracy outfit, BREIN. The site then relocated to Canada, but after threats from the CRIA, it decided to shut down there as well.

A month ago we reported on the brief resurrection of the Demonoid tracker in Malaysia. At the time we hinted at the possibility that the site could perhaps be planning a comeback. Unfortunately the tracker went offline again after a few days. With no official response from the Demonoid team, it remains a mystery what the reason behind the resurrection was.

Now, a month later, the Demonoid tracker is again responding. Just over a week ago, Demonoid torrents began to work again, this time being tracked from Ukraine.

The new host of inferno.demonoid.com is the Ukrainian ISP Cocall Ltd, while the frontend of the site still remains in the US. Again, there is no official explanation for the return of the tracker, although many hope that it’s a sign that the site will be fully up and running soon.

Last December, Demonoid’s founder Deimos spoke about the future of the site: “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there.” Perhaps he now found his safe harbor in Ukraine?

Was Demonoid’s move from (the) Netherlands to (the) Ukraine the best possible choice?

(The) Ukraine was named the number one copyright infringing country in the world in 2001 - http://www.techweb.com/wire/story/TWB20010216S0026 As US pressure mounted, they quickly revised their copyright statutes.

(The) Ukrainian 2001 revised copyright law:

http://www.cipr.org/legal_reference/countries/ukraine/Ukraine_Copyright_ENG.pdf

Let’s not forget that the “Orange Revolution” that overturned the 2004 national election and installed a government more malleable to “Western” interests was largely financed and orchestrated behind the scenes by the United States, whose government’s long tentacles have a worldwide reach.

(The) Ukraine has also found itself again under the hammer of the USA (and Israel) lately for having the nerve to allow the country’s major university (MAUP) to award David Duke a Ph.D. degree in a field that could be called “(anti-)Jewish Studies”. His doctoral thesis, entitled “Zionism as a Form of Ethnic Supremacism” outraged the Jewish establishment worldwide.

In Ukrainian and Russian there are no articles ‘a’ and ‘the’. And most Ukrainians don’t know any English, so what does it matter? The punk kids on the streets only know a few phrases such as “Hello my American friend,” “Give me your dollar” and a few swear words. And even for those who know a little English, the meaning of ‘a’ and ‘the’ is surprisingly difficult to grasp. So 99% of Ukrainians probably couldn’t care less whether it’s referred to as the Ukraine or just Ukraine. So although it may technically be just ‘Ukraine’ right now, it doesn’t really matter. Why do people even care? It’s about equivalent to saying someone is from the USA rather than from USA. Who cares? Use whatever you want. If you really want to do them a favor, learn Russian and befriend a few of them. And yes, I know that they speak Ukrainian, but unless you’re going to be living in the western half of Ukraine, it’s not a very practical language to learn.

Jon, please shut the hell up. We, the Europeans, created your country. What’s your surname? I’m sure it’s American… :p
No, the people that left your European countries because they were oppressive shitholes created America. Get it right.
Wow, it looks like somebody believes anything the American public education system stuffs down his throat. Tell me, did you even notice when they provided no explanation why these glorious WASPs fled tyranny to create a new nation and then, after 200 years, had to fight for independence? It didn’t seem funny to your feeble mind that something was amiss? This is the problem with nationalism, it skews history and only encourages arrogance and war. Cheers to the enlightened citizens of the world who claim no home.

Alex:
looks like last time you were in Ukraine during Soviet times or right after.
There are no much diferences between Kiev and Warsaw
One dollar is not such a big ammount of money in Ukraine, so that kids would bother begging for that, as it was in 1989-1992, you’d have problems getting rid of them - right now a glass of local beer in the pub usually costs starting from 2 USD
Speaking of English, it’s not so widely spread, as in Denmark or other Scandinavian countries, but it distributed more, then in Germany. Once again simmilar to Warsaw and even better, then in Bratislava.
However the streets are mainly named with cyrilic letters, rarely you’d find the name in latin, so start reading Cyrilic in order to get the street you are on, or just take GPS map with you.

You must be talking about #71. As a
general rule, I never follow blank
links, even if they are to Youtube
videos. And my guess that those are
spam is probably correct.

i could say the same for ALL countries. Really it is up to you to decide whether to learn both sides of history, then decide for yourself.
